The batting for Cleveland produced a steady amount of 44 runs during the month. The best of these was Rookie Dickey Pearce. Pearce managed to post an average of .400 from 7 games starts. He had 14 hits, 6 runs and 2 RBI's. What is strange is that this earned him the Rookie of the Month award even though he is 36 years of age.

The pitching of Cy Bentley continues to show solid performances. He posted an ERA of 2.96 from 70 innings pitched. He gave up 91 hits and 23 earned runs. The team gave up 66 runs for the month.

Then fans of the Canaries are celebrating their teams second consecutive AL pennant tonight. They managed it in a canter in the end as the challenge from Philadelphia faded and their 2 game lead was never threatened. The team managed to finish the regular season with a win and a loss against Cleveland (4-5 and 16-7). They finish with an excellent record of 32-18 for the season.

The team will now progress onto the MLB Championship Series against the NL's Chicago White Stockings. This year the fans are hoping the team can go one better and win title after last seasons disappointment.

The leading players that earned them another shot at the MLB title included Pitcher Cherokee Fisher and Third Baseman Lip Pike.

Cherokee Fishers pitching continues to show why he is rated as one of the leagues best pitchers. In the season just gone he started all 50 games and pitched a full workload of 437 innings. These innings garnered him an excellent ERA of 2.68. He gave up 523 hits and 130 earned runs. The one thing he did lose was his wins in a season record. He beat his previous mark by managing 32 this season but it wasn't as many as Jim Britt of the Chicago White Stockings.

Lip Pike has started to show some of the power that he is renowned for as he broke the single season home run record this year. He posted a wonderful 7 home runs during the season which took him 3 past the previous best from last season. He also proved to be the most accomplished Canary at the plate as he scored an average of .324 for the season. He started all 50 games and produced 66 hits from 204 at bats. As well as 7 home runs he also scored a total of 47 runs and 52 RBI's.

The Red Stocking fans will be hoping for a serious improvement from their team next season. If the final 2 games of the season are anything to go by then there may be hope. The team finished by beating the Brooklyn Atlantics 19-4 and 23-10 in those games. This left them in 3rd place in the NL table with a record of 17-33. The GM and manager will need to make sure they draft well in November to bring the teams skills up to a more competitive level.

The players who impressed this season were Third Baseman Levi Meyerle and Pitcher Bobby Mathews.

Meyerle had an excellent season at the plate as he managed to break a few single season records on his way to a batting triple crown. He finished with a wonderful .403 average, 4 home runs and 58 RBI's. Both the season average and the RBI count set new single season record in the MLB. He started all 50 games for the Red Stockings and had 231 at bats for 93 hits. He also scored 52 runs and the afore mentioned 58 RBI's. He also won the NL batting crown with his average.

Bobby Mathews struggled a little with his pitching this season as he had to try and play more games than he was used to. He did start all 50 games but was relieved in 38 of those. He got through 360.2 innings of work in those 50 games to give him a seasons ERA of 3.39. He gave up 535 hits and 136 earned runs. The season also saw him post only 12 of the teams 17 wins. This was lower than the previous seasons total and could leave him fearful for his position if the team decide to draft a new pitcher in the November draft.

The fans of the Atlantics saw just how unforgiving baseball can be as at one moment you can be on top of the world and the next it seems as if everybody is against you. Last seasons MLB champions came down to earth with a loud crash this season as they went from first to worst. They finished the season with two losses to Boston (4-19 and 10-23) to end up with a 14-36 record for the season.

The main reason for this disaster was a lack of pitching. John McMullin tried his best when he was fit. He started 30 games and pitched 254.2 innings. He posted an okay ERA of 3.82 and gave up 356 hits and 108 earned runs. His replacement during his injuries was George Bechtel who in his 20 games earned an ERA of 5.21. This needs a significant improvement in the off season if the fans are to see anything better next year. Hopefully the new GM will draft for a pitcher in November to bring some help.

The batting was solid but unspectacular during the season. The best came from Short Stop Davey Force. Force only started 25 of the games due to a 3 month injury but was still the best of what could be described as an average bunch. In the 25 games he played he had 110 at bats which produced 44 hits, 21 runs and 15 RBI's for an average of .400. The best of those that started the majority of the games came from Catcher Dick Higham who managed an average of .345 for the season.

The fans of the White Stockings are in dream land as they head into the post season for the first time. The team swept through the regular season with hardly a care in the world. They took the NL title at a canter and finished 9 games clear of their nearest rivals. This won them their first NL pennant with a record of 39-11 for the season. They finished with 2 wins and a loss against the Cincinnati Reds (10-5, 4-5 and 17-5).

They now advance onto the MLB championship series against the AL's Baltimore Canaries. The fans will hope that their team can over come their more experienced rivals in what should be a classic series.

The star of the show for the White Stockings during the regular season was young rookie pitcher Jim Britt. This 16 year old showed that age is no barrier to greatness as he produced a season of pitching any experienced pitcher would be proud of. He was so dominant from the mound compared to his rivals in the NL that he managed to pick up the pitching triple crown. He started all 50 games for the White Stockings, pitching 417.2 innings. He gave up 467 hits and 102 earned runs to gain an ERA of 2.20 for the season. He also went down in the record books as he posted the best single season win record with 38 for one season.

The batting was solid enough behind this pitching to gain the runs required to win the games. The best of the batting came in the form of Short Stop Ross Barnes. Barnes a veteran of 2 seasons now started all 50 games. He went to the plate 230 times and claimed 74 hits to post an average of .322. In these hits he gained 64 runs, 41 RBI's including 3 home runs.

The fans of the Reds saw their team again fail to break through to the top spot in the NL table. The season panned out better than last years but the team was still off the pace in respects to the best in the NL. The fans will be hoping another good draft in November might add the missing piece to take the team up to the top spot. The record for the season stands at 30-20 after finishing with a win and 2 losses to the White Stockings (5-10, 5-4 and 5-17).

The pitching is where the team excelled this season. Bill Stearns who played the full year due to Al Pratt's season long injury saw every game from the start. This experience really helped him as he improved all season to end up with an ERA of 2.45 from the 50 games. He pitched 448 innings in those 50 games and gave up 536 hits and 122 earned runs. It will be interesting to see who the team decide to start once Pratt is back fit again next season.

The batting was a little less brilliant as they sometimes struggled to find the runs to go along side this pitching. The best of the batting came in the form of Catcher Cal McVey. McVey started every single game during the season to gain 242 plate appearances. From these appearances he managed to find 80 hits, 28 runs and 35 RBI's including 2 home runs. This was good enough to provide him with an average of .331 for the season.

The fans of Cleveland are wondering if they are going to be faced with a team that always struggles. For the first 2 seasons of the MLB they have not yet had a chance to see their team with a winning record. The team finished this current season with a win and a loss agains the Baltimore Canaries (5-4 and 7-16) to leave them with a record of 21-29. The good thing for the fans was that their was actually a team that played worse than them in the AL this year. The fans are next hoping that the Draft in November can bring the spark the team needs.

The best area of the team in terms of performance was the form of rookie pitcher Cy Bentley. Bentley, who is only in his first season in the league, started all 50 games and managed to pitch 373.2 innings during that time. These innings produced a solid ERA of 3.18 and also saw him give up 502 hit for 132 earned runs. He picked up 19 of the 21 wins while he was relieved in 30 of the games. The best reliever was last seasons started Rynie Wolters. We will see if the team decide to stick with Bentley or go back to Wolters next season.

The batting side of the team was not the strongest as can be seen by their averages. The best of these was Rookie Short Stop Dickey Pearce. Pearce managed to start 33 games once he had forced his way into the starting lineup. This gave him 125 plate appearances and found him connecting 47 times for a hit. This gave him an average of .376 with 19 runs and 17 RBI's including 1 home run.

The fans of the Athletics saw their team push all the way for the AL title. They only came up short in the final couple of series in the season. This gives the fans hope that with the correct management of veterans and excellent drafting in November that the team can push on for the AL title. The team finished the season with a win and 2 losses against the St.Louis Brown Stockings (4-5, 15-9 and 2-9)

The pitching is where the team made their strides towards coming close to the title. Dick McBride produced an excellent season. He started and finished all 50 games pitching 443.2 innings. This work load bought him a very nice ERA of 2.47. He gave up 524 hits and 122 earned runs. With these figures he is definitely in the running for the AL Pitcher of the Year award. His only real contender is Baltimore's Cherokee Fisher.

The batting was where the title was lost. It was solid but nothing spectacular. The best of these came in the form of Left Fielder Fred Treacey. Treacey had a steady season gaining an average of .312 from his 50 game starts. This was done from 237 attempts giving him 74 hits. He also had 48 runs and 33 RBI's including 3 home runs.

The fans of the Brown Stockings had very little to cheer during the season just gone. In fact they are glad it is over. The team struggled all year and even changed both manager and GM to see if that would change the fortunes. The final record was a pitiful 18-32 to be placed last in the NL. The season did finish with some hope as they won 2 of their last 3 games against the Philadelphia Athletics (5-4, 9-15 and 9-2).

In a cruel twist of fate, as the team was struggling to gain any recognition, Their star Catcher Cap Anson was winning the batting crown for the season with the best average of any player in the AL. He posted an average of .362 for the season from his 50 game starts. These games included 85 hits, 44 runs and 26 RBI's from 235 times at bat. This could leave him in line for the AL Batter of the Year award but that would just twist the knife even deeper for the Brown Stockings fans. It is also a shame that none of his batting team mates could provide extra help too him to get the side more wins.

The pitching was as solid as always as starter George Zettlein showed his usual form during the season. Zettlein started all 50 games but did end up being relieved in 29 of them. He posted an ERA of 2.97 from 379.1 innings pitched. He also gave up 472 hits and 125 earned runs for the season.

For the second season running the fans of the Canaries saw their team fail in the biggest series of the season. This time round it wasn't even close as the Chicago White Stockings surprised the Canaries by changing their pitching line up. The Canaries managed just 1 win in the series as they lost 1-4.

Game 1 saw the first of what were tough games for the Canaries as they lost 1-5. Fisher pitched an excellent game for 8 innings giving up only 1 earned run. The teams batting let him down as the change in the White Stockings pitching to use the non regular starter baffled the team to the extent they only managed 2 hits.

Game 2 saw a second loss for the Canaries, this time 4-13. Fisher again started the game and gave up only 2 earned runs in the 5.1 innings pitched. The issue in this game was that the fielding let him down as there were 9 runs scored off of his pitching. The team's batting couldn't keep up with this as they again couldn't work out the White Stockings pitching as they used their second non starting pitcher. They only claimed 9 hits in total with no player really starring.

Game 3 saw the Canaries gain their only win of the series. This came as they faced the regular Chicago White Stockings starting pitcher. This meant they could put into action all the plans they had made for the series before it started and gain the upper hand. Even then it was a close game as they won 9-8. The pitching of Fisher was again excellent as he again only gave up 4 earned runs in 10 innings pitched. The batting finally came to play gaining 13 hits with the best being George Bird with 2 hits, 1 run and 3 RBI's.

Game 4 saw the Canaries finally understand the White Stockings tactic of using relief pitching to start the games but it was not enough as their own pitching went haywire through some weird management decisions. This time the team lost a high scorer 19-12. Fisher tried his best to keep the team in the game as he pitched 3.2 innings for 7 hits and 3 earned runs. This though then led to something strange by the Baltimore manager as he pulled Fisher in favour of replacement part time pitcher Bill Yeatman. This saw the Canaries throw a solid lead away as he gave up 13 earned runs in the next 3.2 innings. The batting tried its hardest but couldn't keep up with the scoring rate once Yeatman started to let the runs go.

Game 5 finally saw the Canaries succumb to the inevitable loss as the White Stockings tactic of using relief pitching to start games again undid the batting line up. They lost the game 15-5. Again the team was in the lead when the manager pulled Fisher for part time replacement Bill Yeatman after 3.2 innings. Again this lead to a barrage of Chicago runs and the loss for the team.

The fans of the White Stockings are over the moon with what they have witnessed these past few days. Not only did their team win the MLB Championship series. But the way their manager out smarted his opponent by changing the pitching around really was the icing on the cake for a wonderful triumph.

Game 1 saw the White Stockings completely baffle the Baltimore Canaries as they decided to use Al Spalding as the starting pitcher. Spalding played an excellent game pitching all 9 innings and giving up only 2 hits and 1 run in the process. This meant that a slightly miss firing batting line up only had to do enough to win the game 5-1.

Game 2 saw the White Stockings use the same tactic of using a different pitcher than normal to start the game. This time they used Asa Brainard to pitch. Brainard again pitched well as he put up 9 innings for 9 hits and 4 runs in the 13-4 win. The batting for the White Stockings caught fire in the 4th Inning as they scored 8 runs to take a lead they wouldn't lose. Ezra Sutton was outstanding in the lead off position as he put up figures of 4 hits, 3 runs and 3 RBI's from 5 at bats.

Game 3 saw Chicago lose their only game of the series. Ironically this came on the back of the regular season starter Jim Britt taking the mound. Britt pitched 9.2 innings to give up 13 hits and 6 earned runs in the close 8-9 loss. The batting nearly won it but just didn't have enough gas in the extra innings to do the business. They picked up 13 hits and 8 runs between themselves

Game 4 saw the highest scoring contest of the series which the White Stockings won 19-12. the tactic of using non regular starting pitching was again used but seemed to back fire slightly this time as the fielding showed signs of tiredness after three games in three days. Spalding managed to pick up the win but did give up 14 hits and 5 earned runs in his 9 innings. The batting was on fire though as they managed to bash the Baltimore pitching. The best was Deacon White with 5 hits, 2 runs and 4 RBI's from 5 at bats.

Game 5 saw the Chicago team get back to being tight in the field as they won the final game and the championship 15-5. Brainard pitched again for the team and went all 9 innings for 12 hits and 5 earned runs. The batting was on fire again as they scored 15. 1st January 1873

The fans of the Canaries have seen the front office make changes during the off season.

Firstly the team lost its manager Pedro Salinas. After 2 years wonderful service to the Canaries which included 2 AL pennants Salinas has decided to persue his career elsewhere and did not renew his contract.

His replacement is Ex Brooklyn Atlantics manager Augusto Barron. The fans hope he brings his skills from the 1871 season when he led Brooklyn to the MLB championship and not the disasters from last season at Brooklyn.

The following awards were made to the playing staff of the Baltimore Canaries.

In the first round draft the Canaries went for batting to add to their already strong line up. The first round pick was First Baseman Jack Manning

1st January 1873

The Boston Red Stockings have seen huge upheavals again in the off season. The owner decided to dispense with the services of manager Kyle Finlay after only 6 games. The reason for this was the chance to sign ex Baltimore manager Pedro Salinas. Pedro Salinas comes to Boston with a fine record after guiding the Baltimore Canaries to 2 AL Pennants in his 2 seasons with them. The fans are hoping he can bring some of this success with him to the team.

On the playing front Levi Meyerle was awarded the NL Batter of the Year.

Right Fielder Bill Craver was voted to the NL Defensive team of the Year with a Golden Glove Award.

The team entered the draft looking for improvements for some of the current playing staff.

With their first round pick they decided to select highly rated pitcher Hugh Campbell.

1st January 1873

The off season has seen a large upheaval in the front office of the Brooklyn Atlantics. The owner decided to remove GM Wilson Hernandez from his position. Hernandez only stayed for half a season with the team and fans will be glad to see him go. His replacement is ex Chicago White Stockings GM Pat Brown. Brown presided over 1 season at the White Stockings which was not very successful. Hopefully his time with the Brooklyn Atlantics will produce better results.

The players on the team failed to pick up any awards for the season.

To boost this playing staff the team drafted first in the 1872 draft. With their first round pick they chose pitcher John Greason. The team are hoping Greason will be an upgrade in this position.

1st January 1873

The MLB champions have had a far quieter off season than last. The front office has been given stability due to the title and all coaches and the GM will return for the next season.

One good piece of news for the front office was the award of NL Manager of the Year to Bruce Harvey for the teams Championship win.

On the playing front there were also awards.

The following players also managed to earn a spot on the Defensive Team of the Year through a Golden Glove Award. Pitcher Jim Britt, Second Baseman Jack Burdock, Third Baseman Ezra Sutton, Short Stop Ross Barnes. Left Fielder Tom York and Centre Fielder Holly Hollingshead

1st January 1873

There was very little movement in the front office for fans of the Cincinnati Reds to mull over.

The same cannot be said for the playing staff. The team was involved in the first ever trade between teams in the MLB. The team acquired an upgrade at Left Field as they bought in Count Gedney from the Cleveland Blues (Forest City's). They had to send 4 players in return for him. These were all bit part players in the form of Third Baseman Mike Brannock and Right Fielders Oliver Brown, Billy Arnold and U Higby.

An extra bonus for the team is the return of pitcher Al Pratt from injury. Pratt was out the whole of last season so it is like getting a new player for the team for next season.

On the award front Catcher Cal McVey and First Baseman Joe Start were voted onto the NL Defensive team of the Year, each winning a Golden Glove Award.

The team has also added depth to the team through the draft. The first round pick was Pitcher U McDoolan.

1st January 1873

The Cleveland team have had lots of changes both on the playing staff but also in name that the fans will be cheering. The team has changed its name from the Cleveland Forest City's to a more easily cheered Cleveland Blues.

The playing staff changes saw the team involved in 2 trades.

The first saw starting Left Fielder Count Gedney sent to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for 4 batsmen. These were Third Baseman Mike Brannock and Right Fielders Oliver Brown, Billy Arnold and U Higby

They also moved on starting Second Baseman Tom J Carey to the St Louis Brown Stockings. The received First Baseman Joe Miller, Second Baseman Frank Fleet and Right Fielders Frank Buttery and George Ewell.

The fans are not sure if these moves are the right thing for the team to do as it seems to weaken the current line up. It also means the team has a glut of batters on the team and will have to send some of them to their AAA affiliate to get into the 25 player roster size.

On the award front Pitcher Cy Bentley was awarded the AL Rookie of the Year award after his good season.

He also made the Defensive Team of the Year along with First Baseman Al Reach. Both received a Golden Glove Award.

The team also hopefully strengthened in the draft. This included first round pick Third Baseman Jim Holdsworth.
