The person with the worse game? Avila: 0-3, with 3 K's and a walk. Wonder what's wrong with the guy? He's been in a funk for a long, long, long time. (If you count last year as a funk that is; I do.) Either something ain't right with him, or scouts have discovered some glaring weakness that opposing teams are exploiting to handcuff him. Either way, it needs to be fixed.
I think that his first year catching so many games is what's wrong with him. His legs have not recovered (and may never) from all that wear and tear. The first year of batting was not affected by the wear and tear, but now he can't escape it. As Mario Impemba said during last nights game, batting begins with the legs. If the legs aren't working right then batting doesn't work right. Sad to see, since he was so fun to watch that first year.

You may have hit the nail on the head. Catching 120 games a year is tough (done some catching when I was younger, it's hard as hell on the body), and frankly, I don't know how he does it.

I just hope the Tigers find a way to ease his workload, or he's gonna have a short career. People who hit around the Inge line don't last very long on this team.

Tigers 4, Astros 3. [Boxscore]

Summary: Cats squeak past Astros thanks to an unlikely hero.

Pitching: Fister continued to display his talents as he held the Astros to 3 runs on 9 hits, a walk, and a hit batsman over 6 innings, nabbing 4 punchouts along the way. Not razor sharp, but not shoddy, either. He does seem to be hitting an awful lot of guys this year, tho'. I attribute that to his throwing inside a good deal. You're gonna plunk guys when you do that, after all.

Smyly, however, was the pitching star of the game as he threw 2 perfect innings, getting one K and the win. He improves to 2-0, 1.35.

He's been an absolute rock for the bullpen, but I can't help but wonder what kind of numbers he would have now as a starter? Well, there's always next season for that role.

Valderde nabbed his third save by tossing the 9th, allowing just one walk and getting a strikeout. Maybe, just maybe, the 2011 version is back, but I ain't putting bitcoins down on it.

Offense: A whole lot didn't happen today with these boys, as they got on base 11 times (6 hits, 5 walks), but couldn't drive the runners home (2-7 RISP). They were whiffed 8 times. The Astros have a good young staff that can only get better, In about 4, 5 years, they'll be dominating AL West (why does it still feel so wrong to put the Astros and the AL West together? Almost like... sacrilege...)

The offensive star of the game was Avila, who hit a 2-run homer (4) with 1 out in the 9th to give the Tigers the lead. It was the first time he's driven anyone in this season that wasn't himself (5 RBI). He went 1-4 with a K, and his BA stands at .179.

Miggy added his 8th double of the season in the 8th, but that went nowhere.

Next game: Cats @ Astros, 7:10 Eastern. TV: FS-D+ (Wings playoff on FS-D). Radio: WXYT 1270.

Tigers 17, Astros 2. [Boxscore]

Summary: Tigers destroy Astros with a supernova-like explosion.

Pitching: Scherzer was top form tonight as he held the Astros to 1 run on 3 hits and a walk over 8 innings while punching out the Astros 8 times. Definitely one of his better outings! He improves to 4-0, 3.43 ERA.

Alburquerque struggled again in the sole inning he threw - 3 hits and a run. At least he got 2 K's in the bargain.

Offense: Oh, my. Where to begin with this game?

Every starter had at least one hit in this 21 hit, 5 walk barrage, and they only struck out a grand total of 4 times. I don't think I've ever seen a Tiger team this disciplined in the matter of strikeouts/walks, and it's just amazing to watch.

Leading the bash parade was Miggy as he went a perfect 4-4 with 2 HR (6) and 6 RBI (36), along with a walk, to raise his BA to .390 (!). Video of the whole barrage.

Victor Martinez hit his first homer of the season to go with a double (6), raising his BA to .221 and his RBI total to 14.

Hunter went 4-5 (.361) with a walk, double (9), and SB (1).

Dirks hit a triple (1), and the following Cats had doubles: Avila (1), Peralta (6).

Just an awesome display of firepower.

Next game: Tigers @ Astros, 4:10 Eastern. TV: FS-D. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Hopefully, the big boys will sweep the Houston lot. Pretty good chance, I'd say, as Verlander is starting.

No hits through six.

I am really thankful for the Astros' move to the AL.

Tigers 9, Astros 0. [Boxscore]

Summary: Cats rake Astros with both paws to complete sweep.

Pitching: On one paw, the Tigers displayed a fearsome Verlander, who only allowed 4 baserunners (2 hits, 2 runs) while punching out 9 [Video]. This was Justin the Great at his best, and he improves to 4-2, 1.55.

Downs took over in the 8th, and he pulled off a perfect imitation of Justin, throwing 2 innings and whiffing 4.

Just an incredible pitching performance!

Bats: On the other paw, well, I hope the fans in the stands had umbrellas, because the boys from Detroit pelted them with longballs:

Fielder blasted a 2-run shot (8) to right-center (374 feet); Brayan Pena smacked a 2-run tater (1) to right (359 feet); Dirks showed off his muscles by hitting the longest homer of the day, a solo shot (2) to right (427 feet); and to join in on the fun, Infante went 396 feet to left (3) to cap off scoring.

In addition to the display of power, Dirks had one of his best days by going 4-4 with 2 ribbies to raise his BA to .243. The Prince went 3-5, 4 RBI, and his BA stands at .304. Even Santiago added to the hit parade with a 2-3 outing, hitting his first 2-bagger of the season.

Matter of fact, every starting Cat had a hit except for The donkelly, who was subbing for Hunter in RF.

Very satisfying game, and I'm sure they put a broomstick on the tail fin of their plane as they departed.

Next game: Tuesday, Tigers (19-11) @ Nationals (17-15), 7:05 Eastern. TV: FS-D, MLBN. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket.

Starters are Sanchez (3-2, 1.82) vs. Zimmerman (5-1, 1.64).

Whoo-wee. This is gonna be a series to watch!

I hope they can make the adjustment from Houston-quality to Nationals-quality opponents. This is a time to show the stuff they're made of.

Game 5 of the 1984 World Series is available in its entirety at Youtube for online viewing: 1984 World Series, Game 5: Padres @ Tigers - YouTube (Didn't know it was even there until the Tigers official Twitter feed posted the url. Thanks, guys!)

Enjoy. I know I will!

Edit: Ah, Tiger Stadium in all its glory. Yee-Haw! Man, does this bring back memories, seeing the old names, faces, and logos, the electrifying atmosphere.

It was a bright beacon of joy in the midst of those perilous days of old.

I'm in the third inning right now, and several things I've noticed so far, contrasts with today's games:

1.) Players appear faster. Debatable, I think, but you sure don't see 100 stolen-base guys anymore. Debatable point, but... something seems to have changed between then and now. Certainly not as much power then as now.

2.) The players of 1984 were... fitter, for lack of a better word. They certainly don't seem as bulky and muscular as today's guys are, despite it being somewhat in the steroid era.

3.) The coaches sure are much thinner, as opposed to those today, as are the umpires.

4.) I miss the graphical information we get from today's games, the 1984 info is... scarce and crude. We're certainly spoiled today.

I'm in the second innings. The two things that stood out for me:

1) I loved hearing the crowd yell "Looooouuuuuuuu"
2) As soon as Steve Garvey stood at attention in the batter's box in the first I remembered that I couldn't stand that guy.

This is great! Thanks Randy.

Welcome, but thank the team's official twitter feed. I didn't even know this existed online until I read it there.

Garvey... *grumble* We share the same opinion there.

One thing struck me when I saw the stat line on Tony Gwynn. He hit something like .351 (or some such number) in the first half... and .352 in the second. I thought... "that's consistency for you!". *chuckle* What an amazing player he was.

It's a real pity they only have game 1 of the 1968 WS on Youtube, would have loved to see game 7 in its full glory.

I think I just might go back to playing OOTP again, starting with the '85 team and seeing what I can do with those boys.

Quick '84 trivia: What player received a WS share from both teams?

(Hopefully, my memory isn't bad on this)

Hrm. My first (and only, come to think of it) guess would be Darrell Evans. Other than that, not a clue.

I believe it was Sid Monge. I googled it to no avail but he did play for both in '84 so I think I am remembering correctly.

Oh no! Padres just tied it up. My nerves can't handle this again!

I don't even remember the guy! Wikipedia does confirm he played for both: Sid Monge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

it was a nailbiter game until... later in the game at a famous matchup. *grin* Ah, sweet memories!

Spoiler! I just watched Rusty Kuntz SAC fly in the go ahead run 4-3. Shhhh!

The 16 year old me would have been giggling wishing Dick Pole came out of the pen to face Rusty. (The 48 year old me did the same thing)

Man, this is fun.
