Moment of the Match

It is not always the victor that is the hero. Things were going as expected for the most part as Washington led Ice Tea 7-1 heading into the final two matches, with Ice Tea's two best fighters on deck. John Henry Lewis brought the Chilton Cup back to Ice Tea with a sound thrashing of Lorenzo Zanon, leaving Joe Walcott to face 2-8-1 Tor Hamer. It looked at best that Washington would leave with a draw and at worst that their 7 match winning streak could come to an end. Queue Hamer, who after getting pounded in the opening round, grabbed, mauled, brawled and roughoused his way to a narrow edge in round two, taking Walcott completely out of his game. Realizing the round was close, Walcott unleashed a furious assault in round 3, but Hamer took everything Jersey Joe threw at him and remained upright. Never has a loss been celebrated so heartily as Hamer's 2-1 loss to Walcott was, as his teammates emerged to carry him from the ring on their shoulders.

The Cornjabbers are starting to show their true colors.

We sure have been stinking the joint up the last couple of rounds.

Moment of the Match

Explosive knockouts, back and forth battles and a furious finish made this one for the ages. Needing to win just 1 round and remain upright to clinch the win for his team, Bob Dunlap ran into an Irish juggernaught. Kevin McBride has proven to be a valuable commodity in the anchor position for Bears Unstable and on this night he fought with unmatched fury. Roaring from his corner, McBride threw punches in quantities that would make Harry Greb proud, taking nary a step back the entire fight. Dunlap was a willing participant to this brand of mayhem and he landed more than his share in several violent exchanges. In the end though, the sheer determination of McBride was enough to take each round, setting up what will be frenetic finish to the WTB's first season in rounds 13 and 14.

Four teams will enter the final 2 rounds within a game of first place, we should be in for a great finish. Bears had 3 fighters hit prime this match, which could have a big impact in their last 2 matches. We also saw Buckeye benefit from salary modifiers in this match, getting $0.5 for winning last round and $1 (which benefits both teams) for John L Sullivan being a star fighter. It turned an ordinary $4/$2 gate split into $5.50/$2.75 for the home and visiting sides.

Moment of the Match

With Washington firmly in the hunt for the Wildhawke Memorial Trophy a packed house turned out to witness an epic collapse. Tor Hamer was the hero for winning a single round last match, but this time he couldn't even last a single round. With Hebron looking to play spoiler, David Izon crushed Hamer, dropping him a minute into the fight, then wailing away with uncompromised fury until Hamer fell again, this time taking the 10 count. The slow start was compounded by a lackluster effort from David Haye and the victory was secured for Hebron in Cooney's win, leaving nothing for Tommy Gibbons to fight for but pride.

Hebron avenged an earlier 10-4 loss to the Sounders and can have a profound impact on the race for the Championship as they face Buckeye Promotions in the final round

Moment of the Match

Despite a rousing start by Harry Persson, not much had gone right for Buckeye Promotions in matches two through four and they held a slim 7-5 lead going into the finale. Fortunately for them, the flamboyant John L Sullivan was in the anchor position. Never at a loss for words or flair, John L promptly addressed a ringside purveyor of Beer, ordering him to keep one cold for yours truly. Sullivan then proceeded to charge into Joe Kennedy with all the finesse of a crazed Bull, driving him into the ropes and unleashing a fusilade of blows. Kennedy was caught, staggered and though he refused to go down was taking a horrific beating. Sullivan forged on at a furious pace, snapping Kennedy's head back and forth like it was on a swivel, until referee Samuel Viruet had finally seen enough.

Buckeye Promotions can now enter the final round no worse than 1 game back and thoroughly in contention.

Moment of the Match

To the well once too often as Kevin McBride was again asked to be the hero as Ice Tea Boxing and Bears Unstable entered the final match tied. This time however 'The Clones Colossus' would come up short courtesy of a well place counter right hand from Jersey Joe Walcott. McBride charged from his corner, looking once again to outmuscle a smaller opponent in the final bout of a match, but Walcott moved smartly to the side. Utilizing the jab, Walcott kept McBride at bay as the latters rushes grew more and more wreckless. Finally, as McBride lunged awkwardly, Walcott unleashed the right hand and McBrides legs gave out like overcooked Spaghetti and though he tried vainly, he could not beat the count.

This places Bears Unstable on the verge of elimination and both they and Washington need Louisville to upset Nebraska in the final match of the round.

Moment of the Match

Louisville fans must have been wondering where this team has been all season, while a sold out house in Nebraska was just left wondering. Sitting dead last in both points scored and knockouts, Seth 'Mayhem' Mitchell set the tone, bloodying Sully Montgomery, then knocking him down twice in round two to get the Clays off and running. Nebraska seemed to come apart, falling behind 9-0 before Corrie Sanders took their only individual win of the match. Then, with the remote chance of a comeback still possible, the much maligned Archie Moore put on his best performance of the season, routing onetime league darling Eddie Neilson and setting the stage for an epic finish to the inagural WTB season.

Well, four teams still in contention after the Clays shocking upset of Nebraska. Bears Unstable and the Cornjabbers go head to head in the last round, while Hebron and the Punching Bags will look to play the roll of spoiler.

With four teams still in it going into the last round, here are the tie breakers.

1-Head to head
2-Total points scored
3-Point differential
4-head to head point differential

With that in mind here is what needs to happen for each team

Buckeye Promotions - Beat Hebron and they are the Champions (split with Nebraska, hold the edge in points scored and can't be passed)

Nebraska Cornjabbers - Beat Bears Unstable and Buckeye Promotions lose to Hebron

Washington Sounders - Beat Punching Bags, Buckeye Promotions lose to Hebron and Bears Unstable beats Nebraska.

Bears Unstable - Beat Nebraska, Buckeye Promotions lose to Hebron (Bears beat Buckeye twice) and Washington loses to Punching Bags.

Buckeye Promotions control their own destiny, everybody else will need help.

Moment of the Match

With both teams fighting for pride, Louisville looked to ride the wave of their huge round 13 upset of Nebraska to a strong finish, but in a close match it was once again Archie Moore that underperformed. Coming off arguably his best outing and with a shot to put some bonus money in Louisville's coffers Moore was dominated by Chilton Cup Champion John Henry Lewis. Cut open early in the fight, Moore seemed to struggle picking up Lewis' jab and was subjected to a steady diet of them, with punishing right hands mixed in for good measure. The clean sweep gave Ice Tea a 6-5 lead and Jersey Joe Walcott iced to ending his bout in 38 seconds.

Ice Tea can finish as high as 5th with a Hebron loss which will mean a bonus of $1 in addition to the $2 bonus earned for employing the Chilton Cup Champion. Louisville meanwhile will look to find a way to solve the struggles of the enigmatic Moore during the off season.

Moment of the Match

The Punching Bags had put up a game fight and their fans gave them a polite ovation heading into the final bout of their season. Sure, they were tied 6-6 but Washington's ace Tommy Gibbons was on deck to fight Joe Kennedy, a man with a punch and not much else. On this night however, a punch would be all that was needed. After being made to look foolish by the boxing wizardry of Gibbons in round 1, Kennedy called on the only thing he could in the 2nd round....Desperation. With his eyes looking at the canvas, Kennedy launched a wild overhand right just as Gibbons went to uncork yet another jab. The right got there first and arena stood in shocked silence, breaking into delirious cheers as Gibbons was counted out.

The cruelest blow of all however, was Washington being officially eliminated losing their final two matches after an eight match winning streak.

Moment of the Match

It should have been the fight that vaulted Nebraska (trailing 5-3) into the lead and put them in position to possibly win the league championship. Instead it became one of the biggest upsets of season one and sent Nebraska spiraling into their second straight lopsided defeat to end the campaign. 'The Sniper' Corries Sanders was sure to take out the 'The Cleveland Thunderbolt' Mervine Thompson, but Sanders learned just how Thompson earned his monicker. With Sanders slightly ahead, a hard left hook from Thompson got through and Sanders was staggered. Thompson poured it on and landed blow after blow as Sanders looked to grab. With just 3 seconds left in the round a bristling uppercut lifted Sanders off of his feet and dropped him in a heap, where he remained as he was counted out after the bell. The KO clinched the match and made McBrides walloping of Montgomery in the finale mere icing on the cake.

So now it comes down to one match for all the glory. If Buckeye defeats Hebron they are the 1900 WBT Champions and winners of the prestigious Wildhawke Memorial Trophy. They lose and Bears Unstable shall reign supreme.

In a special announcement, the WTB governing board announced that the deciding match would be contested tomorrow night in prime time.

Moment of the Match

Arrogance is a dish best consumed in moderation and indeed it was gluttony that caused the undoing of John L Sullivan and Buckeye Promotions on this day. Trailing 7-3 entering his match with Altus Allen John L proclaimed, we have them right where we want them. It turns out that Altus Allen had his own ideas of where he wanted to be in mind. He tore from the corner in round 1 and matched Sullivan blow for blow in what was an extremely vicious and close round. Angered, Sullivan bulled Allen back in round 2 and dropped him with a wide looping hook. The crowd went silent, then erupted in thunderous applause as Allen rose at the count of 7 and survived the round. Frustrated and tiring from his futile attempt to stop Allen, Sullivan was wild in round 3 and Allen took advantage, peppering 'The Boston Strongboy' with nifty combinations, to not only last the distance, but win the bout!!

The shocking conclusion to the match resulted in a three way tie at the top of the standings and gave the 1900 WTB Championship to Bears Unstable!!! As he was led from the ring a dejected John L Sullivan was heard to mutter, "Altus Allen is Judas."
