A good win
Bubba goes to 8-5 with a decent perfomance, striking out 7.
Apparently, going back home to Arkansas to see Ella Mae really set well with him. Also, not shown is Bubba's two hits....he is now hitting .213!

The best game of the season for Bubba! Of course, it helps when you play against the expansion team, Cincinatti!
The Cubs are now 55-35, at .611, and are on pace to win 99 games.... and finish 16 games behind Miami, who, at 64-26, are absolutely dominant. The Cubs are 5 games up for the wild card spot, however. |

Tarbox for Miami is having a pretty good year, ya think? Miami has 3 of the top 5 leaders in wins in the entire league! Those three have a combined record of 39-9. Tough to beat. |

Bubba,
It was so nice of you to come down for the 4th of July. And thank you for the lovely parasol. Your daddy really liked the new pipe and tobacco. Your daddy and I have been doing a lot of talking, about you, Ella Mae, and the Henderson place. The Henderson house is rightfully yours, it was your money that bought the spread from the Henderson family. We can put up the hands in town, and your daddy can build a bunkhouse out by Skitters Creek this winter. I would plan on moving into the Hendersons house....I guess Bubba's house, now, after your season ends. And your daddy says to say he hopes it don't end too soon! Ella Mae is a lovely young woman. She is smart, funny, a good cook, and keeps a clean house. And I have to tell you Bubba, theres a lot of young men been lookin real close at Ella Mae. A steady job with money coming in looks pretty tempting to a lot of men these days. And when you add in the red hair and green eyes, you can see why there is so much interest. She is 22 now, and thinking about how times running along. What I am trying to say, Bubba, is that you need to do something, and right quick. I really don't know if Ella Mae will still be available at the end of your season. Your daddy said to say that you need to find a jewelry store, and bring some money with you, and pick out something nice. Ella Mae's mother, you know Mabel, said her ring size is a "6". Well, that's all I got to say, I am a meddling old woman enough for one day. Take care of yourself, Bubba, and write soon! Last edited by dsvitak; 01-06-2003 at 07:51 PM. |

Does Bubba wait 'til the end of the year to pop the question?
Does he high-tail it back to Arkansas between starts with a ring? Does he just give up on Ella Mae altogether, and start consorting with the Baseball Annies, like his friends? Help me out here, folks! |

A no decision for Bubba, even though his teammates staked him
to a four run lead, and banged out 15 hits.

Another no decision for Bubba, although the Cubs did come back
to win this one. Bubba's ERA has been hovering around 4.15 for the last several games, and that appears to be the norm for him, at this stage of his career.
The Cubs, with this win, are now 8 games behind the leader Miami, still 5 games ahead in the wild card race. |

Six doubles and a home run for the Yankees today, as the Cubs lose
their 4th straight game. Could it be the pressure of their first pennant race in 20 years?

Sports Extra Bubba Jones gave the Cubs a much needed lift today, as the young right hander pitched a brilliant game against the Red Sox. He did not allow a runner to cross the plate, and struck out 11 Soxers on the day. Four times in the game Bubba struck a batter out, when the opponents had a runner perched at third, with just 1 out. It was a very gutsy game for Jones, who went to 11 wins on the year, against 6 losses. Said the manager Clarkson, after the game---"Bubba was wonderful today, and gave me and the boys a much needed lift."
The Cubs keep their slim one game lead in the wild card race, running their record to 64-47. The remain 8 games behind the division leading Hurricanes, who sport a record of 72-39. The skipper called a meeting before the game, to try to settle his players down...much needed, in the eyes of the long-time, long-suffering fanatics. |

Sports Extra Bruce McCourt, a little used power hitter for the Cubs, hit a rare in the pinch home run today, to snatch victory from the very maws of defeat! McCourt, pinch hitting in the 8th inning, hit a 1-2 pitch well into the night, to make a winner of Robert Jones, who moved his record to 12-7. Jones pitched well, and would have been an un-deserving loser, having allowed just 4 hits in the seven innings in which he toiled. Newcomer Reading impressed the fans with his fancy relief work, earned his 5th save.
The Cubs are in a three way tie for the wild card, with just over a month to play....things are getting mighty tight about the ballpark. |

Bubba strikes out 13, but it doesn't matter, as Conley, the
tough Philly pitcher really shuts them down.
The Cubs are now 2 back in the wild card, 6 back of Miami in their division....it doesn't look good for the Cubs! |

Sports Extra The game Chicago Cubs beat a fine Boston team today, moving to within one game of Philadelphia in the wild card race. Coupled with Miami's loss, the Cubs are now just 5 games back of the Hurricanes. Fredric Sims was the star today, driving in 5 runs....3 on a big home run in the 7th, to put the game away. The pitcher, Jones, given an early lead, was very aggressive on the day, challenging the BOSOX hitters with his marvelous swift pitch. Bubba gave up just 5 hits, and struck out 11 in winning his 14th game. Game No.: 1327. The Cubs are now 77-56, 5 games out of first, 1 game back of Philly for the wild card spot. |

Marc Walters Hurt! Out for 6 Weeks!
Chicago Tribune 12 September 1930
Sports Extra The Chicago Cubs pennant hopes were dealt a serious blow today, when starter Marc Walters was found to have a damaged ligament in his pitching arm. Walters, 27, was 15-9 on the year, and was selected to represent the team for this years All-Star game. Walters is expected to be out for as long as 6 weeks, and sadly, may be through for the year. Cubs Manager Sandy Clarkson was devastated when he heard the news---"We all feel just terrible. The fellas have worked SO hard this year, and they are such a close group. They are the finest bunch of men I have ever managed." When pressed on what his plans were, now that Walters is shut down, he replied---"The young guys will have to step it up a notch....McHone, Bates, Jones, and Donaldson." The Cubs brought up Andrew Donaldson, 23, from Peoria, where he was 13-10, with a 4.54 ERA. He will be used as the 5th starter, Bates being moved up to the fourth slot. The Cubs find themselves all alone in second place, 7 games back of the Miami ball club, and 3 full games back of Philadelphia for the wild card slot. |
