 Levi Meyerle after batting .247 with his home town Philadelphia team leaves behind a career of excellent batting and endless effort. Meyerle had one of the best swings we have seen in this game as his .318 career average can attest to. Mayerle was a 2 time league MVP in 1877 and 1878 and had three diffrent hitting streaks over 25 games includng a 31 game streak in 1877. Meyerle played most of his career in Cincinnati and only was able to play in one World Series. Levi was one of the most beloved players in the game.  Steve King was a hard nosed player who may not have had all the skill in the world, but played with all of his heart. The outfielder played his best days in Chicago with the White Stockings including winning the MVP award in 1872 when he hit an amazing .402. King was a .300 career hitter and also stole 119 career bases in 663 games. |

BASEBALL WEEKLY V 14.3 March 1884 New Season Ready To Open The National League is on a good streak after winning the last two championships. In what is still a bitter battle between the American Association and the National League it is sure that the American side will be going all out to get back on top. At the annual owners meeting this offseason in Chicago the owners agreed that the new 16 team division layout is working well and will continue. At the same time a vote was made to once again expand the regular season from 94 games up to 112. This will be the longest season in league history and means each team will have a record 54 home games. A quick breakdown of the National League and the opposition the White Stocking will be facing this season: BOSTON BEANEATERS Boston fadeda bit last seaosn but with a healthy team everyone expects them to be right back in the mix again. Ross Barnes at short is still the class of the league as few hitters have a tack record like his. Jack Glasscock and Jack Rowe supplement the offense in a nice way. On the mound the work will be harder as John Kirby will miss the first 2 months of the season wit a nerve problem. Former White Terry Larkin jouns the staff. BROOKLYN ATLANTICS A letdown season after winning it all the Atlantics look to bounce back. Still one of the most supported teams in the game Brooklyn can bank on 2 time MVP Dan Brouthers to lead the way. A very balanced lineup is smooted over by Mike Muldoon and Fed Lewis. Tim Keefe is still the ace of this staff and just about any staff, Keefe won 22 games last season. Can the Atlantics get back on track? CINCINNATI RED STOCKINGS The Reds are celebrating their first championship but before they know it they will be back at it trying to repeat. Larry Corcoran is the pitcher of confidence on this team but Jack Lynch is slowly becoming an ace in his own right, the two of them make the Reds a headache in any series. George Gore had an outstanding World Series and is one of te classiest players around, Jack Manning will join the fray t help the offense. Cincy is the team to beat and many expect them to fight with Chicago again for the pennant. NEW YORK GOTHAMS New York tries to live up to their hype and still play in the best and most modern facilities in the game. Pitching is a huge problem for the team and John Coleman will have to prove he can pitch at this level. J. Oneil is a new signing and will be leaned on in the bullpen. Jim ORourke and John ORourke are the Irish brothers that knock the ball around on offense and Davy Force is the new presence in the infield, the veteran hopes to make an immediate impact. Pressure is on New York to win. PHILIADELPHA QUAKERS Issues remain in Philly over their pitching situation as well, they also lack the ace that could carry the load at this level, Will Sawyer and Bill Vinton will get the call. Pat Callaghan is the man in the middle of the lineup and Ecky Stearns will look to give him support. This Philly team is really lacking star power, and many wonder if they can stay consistent enough to finish with a winning record. PITTSBURGH ALLEGHENYS Pittsburgh has been far and away the worse team in the league since they started play so there is no direction to go but up. The team lost in the bid for George Wright but have moved Sam Trott back to his natural position at catcher and Henry Larkin is the star of the future in centerfield. The bullpen pitching is very strong with Bert Dorr throwing heat from the pen. Abner Powell will look to make a major impact on the mound at only the age of 23. ST. LOUIS BROWNS Dave Orr is said to be growing into a possible MVP candidate and Orator Schaffer still patrols a good left field. The Browns are fighting to find their way and live up to a winning city and its expectations. Daisy Davis is an ace on the mound will all the stuff to dominate, he leads the rest of the staff and bullpen that is suspect. With Davis and Orr on this team, St. Louis has much to hope and to build on. As for the White Stockings they made little to no changes to their team as they still believe they are good enough to win as is. The biggest change comes with the pitching staff, as Al Spalding, the winningest pitcher in league history, is being asked to pitch out of the bullpen and only spot start. Adonis Terry the young draft pick will get a look in the rotation to start the year. Rumor has it that Spalding obviously isnt happy about the decision. Despite some critisim, Chicago did sign and bring back 36 year old player Count Sensenderfer. The Count was a mainstay in Chicago througout the 1870's. BASEBALL MONTHLY V. 13.4 April 1884 Anson Confident Team On Right Path Winning is something that has come to be expected in Chicago for the White Stockings and optimism for the 1884 season remains good after a good 14-8 opening month. Chicago came out with a frantic pace winning 11 of their first 12 games beofore suffering a swoon at the end of the month and wrapping up losing 7 of their last 10. "Its a long year with many ups and downs" says Anson, "you can never get too high or too low, we just want to be there after all is said and done. If we stay healthy I am confident we will." George Derby went 7-1 for the month and is mainstay now at the top of the rotation. Al Spalding has made the transition to the bullpen earning 2 saves in the opening month but still has been used as a apot starter. Spalding was called on to start against the Quakers in the 20th of the month and the old ace promptly pitched a shutout. "He will start from time to time" said the team pitching coach, "we know what Al gives us on that mound but we just dont want to overuse him at his age and for the long season." Young Adonis Terry (2-3, 1.88) has a more regular spot in the rotation but has been up and down in his first month of real work. The offense did slump towards the end of the month and didnt have a great deal of success in the cold month of April. The team is batting .253 as a unit and has scored 102 runs, both numbers well below their pace of last season. Billy Sunday is out for three weeks with a back problem. Sunday wasnt himself in his limited action and was batting only .176. BASEBALL MONTHLY v. 13.5 May 1884 Chicago and Brooklyn In Staring Match The Chicago White Stockings and Brooklyn Atlantics are waiting to see who will blink first as both teams battle at the top of the National League after 2 months of the season. The diffrence between the sides is a single game and neither lookis like it is slowing down.  The Whites are keeping pace with the staff led by George Derby who has already won 12 games. Stump Wiedman and young Adonis Terry both have ERA's under 2 and 8 wins a piece. The young Adonis has rebounded well to have a good May. The bats are leading the league in hitting and hits. Ned Williamson continues to grow in power as the poweful third baseman has 8 home runs already, surely setting a team record, Williamson has also driven in 30 runs. With Freddy Dunlap struggling with a career low .238 average, the other players have done well to pick up the slack. The Atlantics look to be in the 1882 form and are staying close with the Whites despite many feeling the Chicago team is much better. Dan Brouthers is the star of this team and the league but late this month Brooklyn recieved the worst of news as Brouthers broke his kneecap and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season. Brooklyn insists they can stay in the race, and with Tim Keefe on the mound who could really argue, the star ace has won 17 games already this year. Chicago Stats

BASEBALL MONTHLY V 13.6 June 1884 "This May Be Our Best Team Yet" Few can remember the last time a Chicago White Stocking's team were not at or near the top of the standings as another National League season comes to an end, and this year is no diffrent. Chicago holds the best record in all of baseball with a record of 49-27. Chicago has seperated their lead from the Brooklyn Atlantics during the month of by four ful games by finishing the month 15-11. In a season that has been absolutely dominated by pitching, the Whites team average of .252 is good enough to lead all of baseball. Chicago pitching in its own right has been as good as anyone. The team in truth has 4 players that are capable of taking the mound and winnng a game, the pitcher numbers for the team are as follows: George Derby (17-8, 2.01 ERA, 164 K) Stump Wiedman (11-11, 1.42, 178 K) Adonis Terry (13-3, 0.87 ERA, 162 K) Al Spalding (5-3, 1.86 ERA, 29K)  Adonis TerryAdonis Terry has been a real suprize and has showed that he just may be another superstar young pitcher that the league seems to be full of these days. Terry is only 19 years old and can barely be touched as he is second in baseball in earned runs allowed. Veteran Al Spalding is acting as a mentor to the younger staff, and couldnt be more optimistic about this season and this team. "I believe this may be our best team yet." said Spalding, "every day we have a pitcher who should win us the game." Finishing the job at the end of the season has been the trick that Chicago needs to get better at falling short the last two seasons for the pennant by one game. In the amatuer draft this June Chicago only had 3 picks. The top choice came out of Philadelphia as 21 year of Jim McTamany starts his pro basebal career. The top choice overall in baseball was pitcher Charlie Ferguson, star young prospect now a member of the improving Pittsburgh Alleghenys. -----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL WEEKLY V. 13.7 July 1884 Where Did the Hitting Go? As the game of baseball completes its 13th season never before has pitching been more dominating then now as arms around the league are defining the current pro game. League average is at alltime lows as combined both leagues are batting .226 and when a hit is made now most teams celebrate. The league wide ERA is also setting a new standard as for both leagues combined totals 1.57. The league has also seen a dramatic drop in .300 hitters, a time when the league produced .400 hitters, currently only two players are batting over .300 (Cap Anson and Roger Conner). Coaches and fans are digging for reasons for the trend but nothing definitive has been identified. Better defense and new forms of overhead throwing have all influenced the modern game, and scoring has suffered. There is some concern that a fanbase would like to see more scoring in the game and will dislike the new trend at the gate. The greatest evidedence of the pitching surge is that of the strikeout. Three players are averaging over 10 K's per nine innings and the big arms have many more strikeouts then innings thrown. On July 29th Dupee Shaw of the Boston Americans out did everyone and shattered a baseball record. Shaw struck out 20 batters in 9 innings against the Louisville Eclipse. Shaw well out did the previous record of 16 K's. Dupee ShawBud Black leads the league with an incredible 528 strikeouts thus far. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- White Stockings Patiently Await Finish In Chicago the Whites go into the final weeks of the season with a continued determination to finish the job. Chicago still has the best record in the game at 64-39 and have won more games then anyone in history with the longer season. Chicago holds a four game lead on Pittsburgh, the Alleghenys have suprized most of baseball going from bad to good in a very short time and experiancing their first winning season. The team remains cautious however until the pennant is official, and with their recent past in Chicago, who can bame them? The past two seasons the team has lost the pennant on the last weekend of the season, and fans are sure to be on edge until the clincher comes. The job for the Chicago did get a bit more difficult as starter Stump Wiedman (12-13, 1.87) suffered an injury to his arm this month and his return this season is in question. Al Spalding has been called on again to step up and fill the void in the rotation, a job he knows very well. Ned Williamson the short stop for the team has proven to be a dependable power bat. Williamson has set a league and team record with 12 home runs this season and is well on his way to becoming the most prolific long ball hitter in the games history. Ned WilliamsonThe Whites rewarded Williamson with a nice contract extension this summer. The 26 year old star signed a 4 year contract that totaled over $3000. "I am happy this team stood by me through the good an bad times" said Williamson, "this is the best organization in baseball and I am glad to be here." -----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY v. 13.8 August 1884 Chicago Eases to 5th Pennant This time there was no stopping them. After two years of torment and heartbreaking losses, Chicago won the pennnant in a quiet reserved manner, as if they had been expecting to since opening day.
Always waiting for the challange the Whites never really got it in the division and ended the season with a 5 game winning streak cliching the pennant with a four game sweep in the Polo Grounds against the New York Gothams. Chicago finished the season 5 games better then the upstart Pittsburgh Alleghenys. Chicago had an impressive 71-41 record, 30 games over .500 and leading the division for the majority of the season. Chicago was especially devastating on the road going 38-18 away from home. The stars with the bats were Cap Anson (.318, 0, 70) and Ned Williamson (.26, 13, 72). On the mound no one was better then George Derby who won 24 games and young Adonis Terry who has become a star, Terry had the second best ERA in the league at 0.79, allowing only 22 earned runs in his 29 starts and only three home runs. Now the focus comes to the World Series where the Whites once again have to deal with being the overwhelming favorties. The team knows that the job isnt yet done. "No one will be satisfied with anything less then bringing home a championship" says ace George Derby, "we are fully focused on this goal, let the fans celebrate the pennant, we want more." American Association comes down to last day In the American Association things were far from cut and sry going into the final days of this season. For most of the year the Boston Amercicans were hanging on to the pennant lead. But the defending champion Baltimore Orioles were determined to make a run, and that they did. The Orioles made a strong run and the two teams met in a short two game series a week before the end of the season. The teams split in Baltimore and the Americans held to a one game lead. The teams came into the final weekend with all to play for. On the second to last day of the season Boston lost to Cleveland 2-1 and opened the door for the red hot Orioles. The Orioles in the meantime had their way with the last place Eclipse and beat them to tie the leaders. Both teams won their final game setting up a single one game playoff for the second time is league history. The one game playoff was played in Baltimore. Dupee Shaw was hurt in the 5th inning but didnt have his best stuff to begin with. Ed Rowen went deep for the home team and the Orioles showed their experiance behind Larry McKeon on the mound who won his 36th game of the year. A great finish as Baltimore moves on to the World Series where Chicago awaits, a repeat of the 1877 World Series classic won by the Birds. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anson Wins Second Straight Batting Title  Cap AnsonOld reliable Cap Anson made yet another strong case for his first MVP award as the veteran Chicago first baseman won his second stgraight batting title with a .318 average. Anson also led the league in hits with 157. Cap beat out Deacon White who had a .315 average followed by Ross Barnes at .304 Black Simply Dominant  Bob BlackBob Black of the Boston Americans was every hitters worse nightmare in 1884 and then some. In his rookie year Black mastered the over the head pitch and had hitters losing sight of anything he threw. Black won the three major catagories of pitching for the season and almost carried the pennant to his team as they lost out on the last game of he season. Black won 38 games, allowed 31 earned runs for a 0.75 ERA and struck out an amazing 579 batters. "He revolutionized the way pitching is done," said old veteran Hugh Campbell "and remember he is only 21 years of age." Black of cours is only of the growing crop of dominant pithcers from this generation like Adonis Terry, Charlie Geggus, and Dupee Shaw. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY v 13.9 September 1884 Chicago Crowned Kings of Baseball! The arguments have already begun on whether this Chicago team ranks as the best that the gave has seen. The White Stockings completed their season long joirney and brought home their second world championship defeating the Baltimore Orioles four games to one in the World Series.
Chicago finished the season 30 games over .500 and then controlled the Series against the Orioles, winning three in a row on the east coast to bring home the title. There were celebrations all along the route and train ride back home as the Whites were met at Union Station by hundreds if not thousands of fans upon their arrival. It was appropriate that for the clinching game the Whites had Al Spalding on the mound, who brought the title home as the most storied pitcher in the game in what very well could be his last game in a Chicago uniform. "This is such a proud moment for all of us" said Pete Hotaling. "to be so close for the past few years and now reach our goal is something we will not forget." The players acted like little children as they celebrated and the parade route was already set down Michigan Avenue for tomorrow. A recap of the series: Game 1
WP: George Derby LP: Jumbo McGinnis S: Art Hagan The tone of the series was set in the opener in Chicago. The Orioles came out and stunned the Whites with two runs in the top of the first but Chicago answered right away with three of their own in the bottom of the frame off of Jumbo McGinnis. Geroge Derby held the lead with a good performance and only one earned run. Ned Willamson went 3/4 as Art Hagan closed the door in the ninth with men on for the opening win. Game 2
WP: Larry McKeon LP: Al Spalding Larry McKeon was masterful as he put aside the capacity crowd and heat in Chicago to help the Orioles tie the series. McKeon struck out nine and didnt allow an earned run. John Morril had the big hit of the game in the 4th inning with a two run triple. Chicago only managed one four hits on the day, and all was even heading to Baltimore. Game 3
WP: Adonis Terry LP: Larry McKeon The crucial game of the series went into extra innings. Adonis Terry walked five as the Orioles roared back and made up a 3 run deficit. The game stayed tied at three all the way to extra innings as the Birds stayed with their man Luke McKeon. King Kelly stepped up in the 10th with a two out two run single in the clutch. Chicago would add another insurance run to make the lead three. Tommy Bond was called on to close out the bottom of the tenth and Chicago took the series lead. Game 4
WP: George Derby LP: Hardie Henderson A game Baltimore really needed, but it didnt happen. George Derby went the distance and didnt allow an earned run to frustrate the home side. Chicago scored three in the last two innings, King Kelly and Ned Williamson drove in two runs a piece and the series was in complete control by the Whites. Game 5
WP: Al Spalding LP: Jumbo McGinnis Much like they did in last years World Series against the Reds, the Orioles saved their worse game for the last game. In Game 5 the Birds handed the game to Chicago by commiting 15 errors in the process and never really giving themselves a chance. Ned Williamson had two doubles and batted .391 in the series, he has truly now become a star. BASEBALL MONTHLY V 14.1 March 1885 Title Defense Without Familiar Face An offseason of relief and adoration was experianced by all involved with the world champion Chicago White Stockings who are still being hailed as the best baseball champions yet. Unfortunately however the offseason could not last forever and as the team prepared for the spring and the challange of a new season, it became obvious that some changes had to be made. Soon the rumors of the departure of one of the most storied players in team history began to become a reality. Al Splading was on the mound when the Whites won the title last season. With a permanent place lost in the rotation, Spalding filled in well when he could and upon injury did very well in his limited starts. But with his 34 years of age and a salary that was very high for his services, the writing soon became clear that there was no place for the dependable hurler, who has won the most games in baseball history, 174 of them with Chicago.  Al SpaldingLate rumors surfaced that the two sides were going to make a last minute deal as Spalding was seen out on the town with some of the team front office, but earlier this month the axe came down. Spalding signed a new contract with the Boston Americans and his thrilling time in Chicago came to an end. Rumors that Spading and manager Cap Anson had a falling out have been denied by both sides. The Whites also let go of popular reliever Jon Cassidy who has spent ten years with the team, appearing in 59 games. In response the Whites brought in three new arms that have raised some eyebrows. Joe Borden was the important new man from Philadelphia, Borden has a career 1.75 ERA and will step right into the bullpen. Tricky Nichols also joins the team, the former starter has won 140 games and won 27 games just to years ago, but his 34 years of age make his contribution suspect. Finally the team took a chance on the player who hurt them in the past, The Only Nolan had a legendary performance in the 1877 World Series against Chicago, and now the team gives him a chance in Chicago. Nolan has been up and down and around the league over the past years, including a season where he lost 20 games in 1883. Nolan is a notorious headache for any manager and has pitched iniebriated on numerous occasions; the signing makes many wonder.  The Only NolanObviously still the talent is still there in Chicago, and the offesive lineup stays identical to last season with the starting rotation among the best in the game. BASEBALL MONTHLY v 13.4 April 1885 Whites Breeze Into First Month After an up and down opening week of the season the Champion Chicago White Stockings got comfortable and easily finished the month of April atop the National League. The boys finished the month 12-4 and hold a three game lead over St. Louis. Despite the posotive energy the team did make a trade this April in a move to bolster their depth in the infield. Some critics are saying that Chicago gave up too much but time will tell. The team dealt reliever Tommy Bond and 22 year old outfielder Buster Hoover to Cincinnati in exchange for first baseman Alex McKinnon. The Whites really did not have a steady man to play first base and McKinnon is hoped to be that man. Alex McKinnon is 28 years old and has batted .227 for his career with 52 career RBI. Not overwhelming numbers but the team has invested much in the player. "I am here to win," said the the new Chicago man, "thats why i am here, it is not about what I have done in the past or anything else. I am fortunate as I know anyone in the league would like the chance to play here." BASEBALL MONTHLY v. 14.5 May 1885 Miss Spalding? Whites Hurting on Mound Under the own standards, the Chicago White Sox suffered a dismal month of June going 12-16 and have much of their slump to blame on an underacheiving pitching core. In a pitcher dominant league Chicago has the higgest ERA in the National League at 2.14. The low point of the month came in a game against the Brooklyn Grays on May 15th, Chicago suffered their worse loss in franchise histroy by a score of 21-2. The absence of Al Spalding for the first time in close to a decade has hurt the confidence of the staff. The starters other the Stump Weidman all have ERA's over 2.00 and many scouts are beginning to believe that George Derby especially has lost some of his stuff. The experiment of spot starter the Only Nolan has not gone well, the former star has an ERA over 6 and set a baseball record with his 10 walks in a game against the Cincinnati Reds.  George DerbySpalding on the other hand has only appeared in two games for the Boston Americans and many are beginning to start rumors that Spalding may be nearing the end of the road on the mound. Other rumors have him talking about coming back the the White Stockings in an ownership role. Speaking of the front office there seem to be more pressing issues. Reports are coming out the backup catcher Cal McVey as demanded a trade and is tired of playing behind the popular King Kelly. Mcvey is a veteran and isnt in a position where he has years to waste on the bench.  Wants out?Manager Cap Anson moved himself down in the lineup to help create runs. With all the rumors surrounding cam including the poor influence of the Only Nolan in camp, Anson wants to keep the focus on the field. BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1885 Matt Kilroy Tops 1885 Amateur Draft Teams and their front offices stepped to the plate this month as the annual amatuer draft took place in Chicago. Scouts grade and take chances on players across the country in hopes that they will be the stars of tomorrow. Most teams have yet to develop any kind of lower leagues to train and develp their selections, so most of these young men will be forced to play at the higest level while still in their teen years. Matt Kilroy of of Philadelphia was the top kid selected in the draft. The 19 year old pitcher was taken by Louisville and is expected to anchor the staff of the leagues weakest team as soon as he can get a glove on. A complete recap of the first round of the draft is a follows: 1. Matt Kilroy SP - Louisville Colonels 2. Cannonball Titcomb SP - Philadelphia Quakers By most scouts a risk pick here by the Quakers, Cannonball can throw hard but needs to develp another pitch to succeed at this level. 3. Jim Handiboe SP - St. Louis Blues 18 year old Colombus Ohio kid will have a chance to make a diffrence in St. Louis. Throwing a ball from as far back as he can remember, this kid has to grow in confidence but has the stuff. 4. Elmer Smith SP - Chicago White Sox Another pitcher taken in the opening round, the Pittsburgh native is the youngest player in the draft just having turned 17. Little is known about him other then he can throw hard. 5. Jocko Flynn SP - Washington Nationals A good pick here as Flynn is a more polished 21 year old starter who some thought had the stuff to go as the top pick. The Nationals were happy to get him where they did. 6. Silver King SP - Philadelphia Athletics A grand curveball at the young age of 17 makes scouts take notice. The kid is imature but has special movement on his pitches. 7. Nat Hudson SP - Boston Beaneaters Maybe a deperate pick here as Boston choose a 26 year old pitcher who started playing the game at an old age. How much can Boston really expect from this guy? 8. Ed Daily SP - Louisville Colonols Much potential here for the 22 year old but he still does not have the stuff or the control to make it at this level. Again an obsession for good pitching may be a stretch with this pick. 9. Elton "Icebox" Chamberlain SP - New York Giants Fiesty young kid who still is far from making it at the highest level. The ninth pitcher chosen in row Chamberlain will help the Giants eventually but fans are sure to want results now. 10. Otto Schomberg 1b - Chicago White Stockings  A consensus premium talent, this guy should have not been available at the 10th pick. The lefthanded bat fits in perfectly for Chicago as they needed a first baseman. He is already their main man at the position. 11. Frank "Shadow" Gilmore SP - Pittsburgh Alleghenys A smart kid from Mass, Gilmore is a good study and learner and the Alleghenys believe he can make the fast track to their rotation. Gilmore is quiet, tall, and lanky. 12. Lefty Marr CF - Cleveland Blues An Ohio kid stays close to home and has a chance to play everyday in Cleveland. Per his name a left handed bat is always more rare and needed, the overall hitting skills still need some work. 13. Bill Hart SP - Detroit Wolverines A team that doesnt have the most financial stregth in the league hopes it has a bargain in the arm of Hart. Hart has exceptional movement on his pitches and at 19 may be ready for the bigtime. 14. John Schaffer SP - Louisville Colonols Do you think the Colonels need pitching? The third pick by the team in the first round is another hard thrower who has the nickname of Cannonball. Schaffer at 21 may be groomed for a closer role. 15. Wilbert Robinson C - Boston Americans A local Boston kid who already is very popular. Many question however if Robinson is smart enough to play catcher and lead, but by all acconts the 22 year old can swing the bat and will give it a go. 16. Hub Collins LF - Baltimore Orioles A good contact hitter Collins should have a good baseball career. Collins may get a chance to play at the end of this season as the Orioles are well on their way to an early pennant. 17. Billy Shindle 3B - Louisville Colonels Finally a position player for the Colonels. Shindle at 24 may be older then most but his glove work and work rate could give him a nice career. With the addition of Schomberg the White Stockings are sticking around in the National League pennant race. Things did get a little more challanging as starter Stump Wiedman suffered an injury and missed three weeks. Wiedman will be back as the tired pitching staff needs his contribution and innings. The Only Nolan has done better as a filler in the rotation, but the starter still has major issues with his control, earlier this month Nolan shattered his own record for walks in a game by trowing 15 walks in a 9 inning game. Chicago went 15-11 in the month and is only .5 games back of the lead. Team statistics:

BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1885 Dynamic Pennant Race in National League While the Baltimore Orioles are breaking all kinds of records in the American Association and have already clinched their third straight pennant, all eyes are on the National League where three teams race to the finish line and three cities hold their breats again. Chicago of course is no stranger to this scenario, few could ever rememeber a pennant race that the Whites have not been a part of over the years. Many were worried about the team in the middle of the season but they have fought it out and had a 17-11 month of July to pull with in one game of the division lead, the Brooklyn Grays lead the chase. Just a single game behind Chicago is the Cincinnati ball club, who also has been surging late to stake their claim. With 8 games remaining for the three teams all will be decided on the field. The Grays and the Reds face off for two games in Brooklyn to start the month, then the most crucial series of the year happens on the last weekend of the season when the Chicago club hosts Brooklyn for a final 4 games, doubtless these games will decide the winner. The team also made a late season move to bring back Candy Cummings who was out of a job. Cummings was with the team during their first title and may have something to give in the final month. The 36 year old pitcher has won 171 games in his career and has a career ERA of 2.29. Cal McVey has finnally gotten his wish and was sent to Cleveland.  Cummings back in ChicagoMany are worried that Chicago in the end will still miss the services of Al Spalding this time of year. In the past it was Spalding who took the ball in the biggest of moments and led the team with guile and determination, the current staff is much more soft spoken, and have yet to really prove they could win the big game. BASEBALL MONTHLY August 1885 Grays Claim Deserved Pennant After a long season few could argue that the most deserving team walked away with the league pennant. The Brooklyn Grays left no doubters as they beat their biggest opposition 5 out of 6 times in the month of August to win their second pennant by two full games over Chicago.
The Grays started the month by routing the Cincinnati Reds outscoring them 27-3 in the two games series. The game showed that the Reds had what it takes to go the distance and proved a psychological advantage for the rest of the month. Chicago stayed relatively close but found themselves 3 games back when the two teams faced off in Chicago to close the regular season. In the opening game the Grays outlasted with Whites by beating them 9-6 and saving any farther drama, to win the pennant. The Whites for their part battled with a depleted pitching staff. Starter Stump Wiedman suffered a serious injury at the start of the month when he dammaged his radial nerve while pitching. Its a serious injury for Wiedman who is still 24 years of age but now faces an uphill battle in the offseason to get full strength back in his throwing arm. Candy Cummings filled in for two starts for Wiedman, the veteran did all that could be asked of him including going the distance for a win on August 5th.  Stump WiedmanNed Williamson also delveloped an injury in the misdt of the race. Williamson dislocated his shoulder in a collision at the plate and was sidelined for the season on August 6th. So now the Greys face the mighty Orioles who ended the season with a record 77 wins and a 16 game pennant diffrence beyond the Cleveland Blues. Most are expecting the Orioles to waltz their way through the National Leaue champs and end a three year run of championships by the rival league. The Orioles become the first team to win three pennants in a row and have the chance to finally make it right as they lost in the Series the last two seasons. Final Whites Stats:

Orr had 132 hits and ended the season with a .345 average. Orr has come into his own this season and at 24 years of age has a long and polished future ahead of him. Records fall in 1885 Along with the most wins by a single team this season for the Baltimore Orioles, other records also fell in 1885. Jim Whitney of Cleveland had the higest on base percentage anyone has seen before at .480. Dan Brouthers scored the most runs in a season with 108, Brouthers also had the most triples ever showing off his speed with 24. Finally John Reilly did pass the 100 stolen base mark ending the season with an incredible 104 steals in 111 games. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY September 1885 Grays Upset Orioles In Series The National League won its fourth straight World Series Championship and this time their representative were the Brooklyn Grays, who brought the second ever championship to the city.
The Grays pulled what many are calling the biggest upset in post season history as they defeated the mighty Baltimore Orioles who won a record 77 games in 1885. The Orioles lose their third Series in as many seasons and will feel this one to be the most hard to swallow, as expectations were so high. Support in Brooklyn is enourmous as is the party for the celebration, the Grays wrapped things up with a game to spare and their train from Baltimore was mobbed upon its short return. "No one thought we could do it but our loyal fans," lamented superstar Dan Brouthers, "numbers mean nothing when you step between the lines." A recap of the 15th World Series is as follows: Game 1:
WP: Jumbo McChinnis LP: Charlie Bohn A great opening game in Baltimore as they Orioles needed the extra inning to get the opening win. John Reilly prove just how good he was in the 10th inning as the speedster single handedly won the game. Reilly reached on an error and moved to second on a passed ball. Reilly then stole third base and when Ed Rowen threw the ball away Reilly came around to score the winner. Arthur Irwin and Jackie Hayes drove in two runs each. Game 2:
WP: John Connor LP: Luke Mckeon Six errors by the home Orioles sealed their fate as the Grays won a comfortable 9-1 game to even this series. John Connor went the distance in a good outing and Jack Gorman drove in three runs including a bases loaded triple in the 4th. Dan Brouthers hit a home run in the very first inning. Game 3
WP: Jumbo McCGinnis LP: Charlie Bohn A marathon classic in Washington Park that sees the Orioles get a win and take a game up in the series. Catcher Ed Rowen for the Grays drove in 5 runs including a long home run but the home team still trailed by a run in the bottom of the ninth. Arlie Latham did come up big with a two out hit to tie the game. The game lasted all the way to the 12th when a pitcher, Jumbo McGinnis, doubled in the go ahead run and came around to score when Henry Luff drove him in with the single. The Orioles would hang on a take the dramatic win. Game 4
WP: John Conner LP: Luke MCkeon Behind their loyal fans the Grays come back and tie the series with a 9-3 win. A six run 2nd inning thanks to an Arie Latham double plating two. The Grays banged out 14 hits and John Connor appreciated the support in his complete game effort. Again bad defense cost the away team as they commited 6 errors as they did in game 2. Game 5
WP: Tim Keefe LP: Hardie Henderson The Grays broke open a close game with 6 runs in the 5th and 6th innings to set up their 10-6 win. The big problem for Baltimore was that ace Hardie Hendersion suffred an injury and had to leave the game after three innings, a game he was looking strong in. Mike Dorgan and Dan Brouthers each scored and drove in two as again Baltimore commited seven errors to continue their nervous and unreliable defense. Brookyn's resolve was too much to match but the Birds were heading home. Game 6
WP: John Connor LP: Luke McKeon The clincher wasnt even close as the Grays bring the title home. The Orioles broke out in front in the very first inning with three runs but an 8 run debacle by the Orioles allowed the Grays to take command of this game. Six hits and three errors in the inning as the Grays batted around including a bases loaded single by Dan Brouthers. Brouthers had the be the MVP of the series as he batted .385 and drove in seven.
