1980 Kansas City Royals vs 1996 New York Yankees ![]() 1996 New York Yankees
Record: 92-70 Finish: Won World Series over Atlanta Braves Manager: Joe Torre Team ERA: 4.65 Team AVG: .288 Home Runs: 162 Key Players: Tino Martinez 1B (25 HR, 117 RBI), Bernie Williams OF (.305, 29 HR), John Wetteland (43 saves 2.83) A team many called of destiny this Yankee side brought the pride bak to the Bronx and opened up a dynasty. The team had an excellent bullpen but its starting pitching wasnt the best around. The Yanks did it with the bats however hitting a strong .288 and having clutch hitters up and down the lineup. A mix of youth like Jeter and Rivera mixed with veterans like Boggs and Strawberry this team was fun to follow. 1980 Kansas City Royals Record: 97-65 Finish: Won AL Pennant; lost to Phillies in Series Manager: Jim Frey Team ERA: 3.83 Team AVG: .286 Home Runs 115 Key Players: George Brett 3B (.390, 118 RBI), Willie Wilson OF (.329, 79 SB), Larry Gura SP (18-10, 2.95) Led by George Brett who had one of the most exceptional season's in modern baseball history, Brett flirted with .400 all season. Other stars like Willie Wilson were always on base and even players like Willie Aikens had career years. Jim Frey had a great mix here and it all culminated with closer Dan Quissenberry, who was a terror with his sidearm late inning action. Pitching matchups Game 1 at Yankee Stadium: Larry Gura (18-10, 2.95) vs Andy Pettitte (21-8, 3.87) Game 2 at Yankee Stadium: Dennis Leonard (20-11, 3.79) vs Kenny Rogers (12-8, 4.68) Game 3 at Royals Stadium: Jimmy Key (12-11, 4.68) vs Paul Splittorff (14-11, 4.15) |

Yanks Rally For Opening Win ![]() The 1980 KC Royals were just 6 outs away from taking a crucial game one win in their series against the 96 Yankees. But six outs at this level could be an eternity and the Yanks used a 4 run eigth inning to turn this game around and steal it by a score of 5-4.
George Brett showed just how good he as as he homered in his first two atbats to drive in 3 runs off of Yankee starter Andy Pettitte. Brett set a tone early and the Yankee pitching staff will surely treat him diffrently for the rest of the series. Clint Hurdle then homered in the 6th inning and KC was riding high behind Larry Gura up 4-0. Gura stayed in the game coming out in the 8th hoping to be able to get the match to Royal closer Dan Quissenberry. A Wade Boggs RBI double followed by a Bernie Williams RBI single cut the lead to 4-3. Then Paul ONeil had a great atbat going 3-2 and then singling to left for another RBI to tie the game. By the time Gura was out of the game sub Ruben Rivera had given New York the lead with a sacrafice fly. John Wetteland then came in in the 9th and ended the Royals day with a frustrating defeat. The Yankees won this one the way they won most of their games in 96, with a dramatic flair. The Royals may surely regret dropping this one. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1 96 Yankees lead series 1-0

Yankees Take Control With 10 Inning Win ![]() A very good game in the Bronx needed an extra inning for the home 96 Yankees to pull off the 5-4 win and secure a comfortable 2 game lead in the series.
Tim Raines doubled in the left field gap in the 10th inning scoring Paul ONeil from second base off of Dan Quissenberry for the winning run. The Royals pulled out all the stops to try and get this game, but in the end their closer lost some gas and relented the game. The Yankees had taken a 3-0 lead but nothing in the Royals told them to quit. Hal McRae drove in a run but the Yanks and Kenny Rogers held strong with a 4-2 lead going into the 8th. In the eigth however two consecutive doubles by Willie Aikens and then Darrell Porter that tied the game and chased Rogers from the game. Tension remained high as the Yanks threatened in the 9th but had to wait until the 10th to walk off with the win. The Royals havent given up. "Everyone says its a mountain to climb to come back," said Jim Frey, " I say its just three games." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 2 96 Yankees lead series 2-0

Royals Stay Alive With Late Runs Simply said, the 1980 Kansas City Royals are just too good to get swept in any series. They Royals came back home and were really up against it against Jimmy Key and the 96 Yankees, but a late rally turned things around and Kansas City stayed alive for a 5-4 win.
Frank White smoked a single up the middle off of Ramiro Mendoza to turn the game around in the 8th inning and give the Royals a lead. The Yanks had scored three in the 4th inning to take a 3-1 lead. Ruben Rivera has been quite a suprize this series and took a fast ball out to center for a 2 run home run. In the 7th the Royals tied the game through again Frank White and Hal McRae to tie the game at 3 runs a piece. Darryl Strawberry gave New York the lead again in the top of the 8th with an RBI single, and at this point many thought the Yankee bullpen would take it over. But the Royals and their fans wernt done. The clutch hitting of Frank White was the key, and with the lead Dan Quissenberry wasnt going to let this lead slip by as he did in game 3. Kansas City wins and if you believe some of the fans leaving Royals stadium, then you would be bought into believing that this series is just beginining. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 4 96 Yankees lead series 2-1

Royals Continue Comeback ![]() The Series that seemed to be over after game 2 is now all even. The 1980 Kansas City Royals fed off the momentum of their last game and the noise of their fans to take game 4, coming from behind, by a score of 8-4.
The Royals again fell behind early and trailed 2-0 after the second inning. Willie Wilson tied up the game with a single in the 5th inning off David Cone, who was great through 4 but now was beginning to show rust in his stamina. The Royals then put their stamp of this game in the 6th inning. The Royals batted around, knocked Cone out of the game, and scored 6 times to book their ticket bck to New York. Cone actually struck out the first batter of the inning but he reached through a wild pitch. Then Mr. Clutch drove in 2 runs with a double and Willie Wilson immediatelly followed with a fantastic triple. The six runs left the Yankees wondering where this team gets all its energy. So now a great series comes down to just one game. All eyes will be on Andy Pettitte and Larry Gura as they start the decider. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 4 Series tied 2-2

Royals Stun Yanks, Pull Upset ![]() Comeback in the name of the game for this 1980's Royals team, and as they celebrated on the field at Yankee Stadium after their 6-5 win, few could hardly believe it. The Royals took three games in a row and won the series, and in the final game 5, did it all coming back from the dead 5 runs down to win the game and the series. The 96 Yankees took a commanding lead in this game behind Andy Pettitte. The Lefty threw shutout ball into the 8th inning and was given a 5 run lead thanks in part to a 5 hit, three run first inning. New York was given their biggest lead after Bernie Williams drove in two with a single in the 4th. The amazing thing about the Royal rally in the 8th inning is that it came with two out. Clint Hurdle doubled off of Pettite to drive in two and Joe Torre went to his pen, which was supposen to be his strong point. UL Washington then came up a little later and also doubled to score two more and the Yankees lead was down to one. The goa ahead hit was delivered by Willie Wilson off of Jeff Nelson and the comback was complete. Dan Quissenberry then had it all to do in the final inning as Jim Frey used 6 diffrent pitchers to get to this point. The Quiz came through and the Royals had done what no one had thought they could do. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 5 80 Royals win series 3-2

1960 Pittsburgh Pirates vs 1927 New York Yankees ![]() 1927 New York Yankees
Record: 110-44 Finish: Won World Series over Pittsburgh Pirates Manager: Miller Huggins Runs scored: 975 Runs allowed: 599 Team ERA: 3.20 Team AVG: .307 Home Runs: 158 Key Players: Babe Ruth OF (.356, 60, 164), Lou Gehrig 1B (.373, 47, 175), Waite Hoyt P (22-7, 2.63) Quite simply many say this is the greatest team ever. This Yankee team hit .308 as a unit and had two seasons from two players for the ages. Ruth and Gehrig combined for 107 home runs and over 300 RBI and the rest of the team complimented well by getting on base. It wasnt a matter of if this team would win, but by how much and whether Ruth would hit a home run or two. Few can compete with this team on paper, the team almost scored 1000 runs. 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates Record: 95-59 Finish: Won world series over Yankees Manager: Danny Murtaugh Runs Scored: 734 Runs Allowed: 593 Team ERA: 3.49 Team AVG: .276 Home Runs: 120 Key Players: Roberto Clemente OF (.314, 94 RBI), Bill Mazeroski 2B (.273, 11 HR), Vern Law P (20-9, 3.08) This team won it all with the dramatic Mazeroski home run against the Yankees, they will need much of the same heroics to do it again. A great defensive team with Clemente and Mazeroski that also has a strong starting staff the pressure will be off this group as they try and pull off the unthinkable upset. "We are just good at beating the Yankees" said Mazeroski before the series. Pitching matchups Game 1 at Yankee Stadium: Vern Law (20-9, 3.08) vs Waite Hoyt (22-7, 2.63) Game 2 at Yankee Stadium: Bob Friend (18-12, 3.00) vs Herb Pennock (19-8, 3.00) Game 3 at Forbes Field: Urban Shocker (18-6, 2.84) vs Harvey Haddix (11-10, 3.97) |

Hero Ruth Delivers Yankee Win ![]() The 1927 Yankees finally took the field at Yankee Stadium as many fans and press viewed Babe Ruth in all his prime. Ruth and the Bronx bombers expected to come out and overwhelm the 1960 Pirates but this game was as tight as can be and a small act of heroism would determine the reult of game 1.
In the very first inning Ruth hit a majestic home run to right field that carroed 432 feet of Vern Law. The shot was what everyone expected and gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead behind Waite Hoyt. The Pirates pushed aside any intimidation and took the lead in the 3rd inning scoring twice on a Roberto Clemente two out two run single. Vern Law then took over the game and pitched like a real star holding the historic Yanks all the way to the bottom of the ninth with the same scoreline. In the 9th after Ben Paschal led off the inning with a walk. Earle Combs doubled down the line to score the runner and tie the game at 2, a very clutch hit for the center fielder. Ruth eventually came up with two out and Combs on second. On a 2-0 count Ruth smacks a ground ball past a diving Dick Stuart, Combs crosses the plate on a late throw, and the Yankees come from behind to take game 1. A classic battle with a classic finish from the games most famous name. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1 27 Yankess lead series 1-0

16 Hit Attack Propel Yanks to Win ![]() New York- The 1927 New York Bronx Bombers looked more like their expected selves in Game 2 and rode the crest of their dramatic game 1 win. The Yankees beat the Pirates 7-4 and pounded out 16 hits.
Babe Ruth did hit another home run, his second of thr series, but it was only a solo shot and a side note this time. The Yanks jumped on Pirates starter Bob Friend for three runs in the led by doubles from Mark Koeing and Earle Combs. The game remained close until the 6th inning when New York built on a 4-2 lead. Lou Gehrig drove in a run and Bob Muesel smoked a two run double to put the Yankees up 5 runs and clinch this game. It couldnt have been a more perfect day for Yankee fans, a long Ruth homer, a 16 hit parade, and a dominant 2 games to none lead in the series. The Pirates need a miracle heading to Forbes Field. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 2 27 Yankees lead series 2-0

Yankees Complete The Sweep ![]() Even though the games were alot more competitive then people give them credit for, the 1927 Yankees still completed a clean sweep of the 1960 Pirates, to no ones real suprize, winning the final game at Forbes Field 4-3 in 11 innings.
Tony Lazzeri hit a solo home run in the top of the first as the Bronx Bombers got off to a 3-0 lead against Pirates starter Harvey Haddix. New York was cruising with Urban Shocker looking smooth and mixing up his pitches. The Pirates didnt quit however and came back with force as Clemente drove in a run and then Bob Skinner took a first pitch fastball with a man on over the left field wall and tied the game at 3. With Pittsburgh looking confident reliever Bob Shawkey came on to hold off the Pirates and take the game to exrta innings. In the 11th facing Roy Face, Bob Muesel worked the count and got a pitch to drive, Muesel hit the 2-2 offering 464 feet, a Ruth like shot, to break the tie and put the Yanks on top. In the bottom of the frame Wilcy Moore struck out Roberto Clemente with a man on to end the game and the series. Appropriately enough the Yanks won it with a long ball. So the 1927 team lives up to the hype and sweeps the Pirates, even though the series was tight througout. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 3 27 Yankees win series 3-0

1920 Cleveland Indians vs 1930 Philadelphia Athletics 1930 Philadelphia Athletics
Record: 102-52 Finish: Won world series over St. Louis Cardinals Manager: Connie Mack Runs scored: 951 Runs allowed: 751 Team ERA: 4.28 Team AVG: .294 Home runs: 125 Key Players: Lefty Grove SP (28-5, 2.54), Mickey Cochrane C (.357, 85 RBI), Jimmy Foxx (.335, 37 HR, 156 RBI) One of Connie Macks best teams ever as Lefy Grove and Jimmy Foxx anchor a roster that is well balanced and quality throughout. Other stars like Al Simmons (.381) and the undenying leadership of Mickey Cochrane behind the plate make this team one of the most overlooked in baseball lore. This team does hhave some concerns after Grove on the mound but did outscore their opponents by 200 runs. 1920 Cleveland Indians Record: 98-56 Finish: Won world series over Brooklyn Robins Manager: Tris Speaker Runs scored: 857 Runs allowed: 642 Team ERA: 3.41 Team AVG: .303 Home Runs: 35 Key Players: Tris Speaker OF (.388, 107 RBI), Elmer Smith OF (.316, 103 RBI), Jim Bagby P (31-12, 2.89) This is Tris Speaker's team and his opoortunity to show the world and the historians not only what a great player he is but also what a great manager he can be. This Indians team may be the best the franchise has ever seen led by 31 game winner Jim Bagby, the Indians are tough all around. Team batting of .303 as a unit they can score runs and run with their small ball style. Their series with the Athletics should be one of the most competitive we have seen yet, as both teams are excellent, and underrated. Pitching matchups Game 1 at Shibe Park : Jim Babgy (31-12, 2.89 ERA) vs Left Grove (28-5, 2.54) Game 2 at Shibe Park: Stan Coveleski (24-14, 2.49) vs George Earnshaw (22-13, 4.44) Game 3 at League Park: Rube Walberg (13-12, 4.69) vs Ray Caldwell (20-10, 3.86) |

Indians Steal Game 1 Win A three run 8th inning turned this game around and allowed the visitng 1920 Indians to get a vital win in game 1 behind Jim Bagby.
Tris Speaker doubled in a run in the inning and George Burns then hit a two run single with Speaker coming home spikes up to beat the throw. Lefty Grove was having a good game but couldnt make the big pitch when he needed it and the 8th inning collapse was alarming. Bagby went all 9 innings and earned the win even though he fell behind allowing three runs through 6 innings. Bagby didnt strike out a batter but only allowed one extra base hit on the afternoon limiting the damage and keeping his team in the game. In what is sure to be a tight series every late inning matchup will be key, and on this day the Indians picked their spots and earned the crucial road win. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1 20 Indians lead series 1-0

Indians Making It Look Easy Take Game 2 In what many were anticipating to be a close series, the 1920 Cleveland Indians won again at Shibe Park by a final of 6-3 and now have a commanding lead in the series over the 1930 Athletics.
"We are much better then people think we are," said Tris Speaker, "maybe we will stop hearing about only Ruth and Cobb and hear about some other good ballplayers." The Indians took a five run lead in this one, Ray Chapman drove in two in the 4th and Cleveland put three more on the board in the 6th as George Earnshaw just didnt have his best stuff on this crucial day. Mickey Cochrane drove in two in the 7th as the A's who cut the lead in half with a three run inning. Speaker wasted no time in making a change on the mound bringing in Duster Mails to pitch the final two innings. Mails did the job and sustained the lead. Now Connie Mack and the Athletics go on the road and really need to step up their game not nessessarily to win, but just to make this a competitive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 2 20 Indians lead series 2-0

Fans Forced to Wait; A's Shutout Indians ![]() Much anticipation was built at League Park in Cleveland as fans and the city hoped the 20 Indians could sweep and wrap up this series. Not on this day however as Connie Mack and his team were in complete control winning this game 6-0.
Rube Walberg threw an excellent game going all 9 innings and alowing six hits on 2 strikeouts. Wallberg looked in great command and was on the same page with Mickey Cochrane all game long. The Athletics did all their work in one inning and put a crooked number six on the board as they batted around in the third inning. Five hits in the inning all singles as well as two errors allowed the A's to parade around the bases and the frustration on Tris Speaker and his team was evident. Now the series becomes much more interesting as the teams know if the A's pull another road win, back the Shibe Park both teams go. Maybe this will be a very good series afterall. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 3 20 Indians lead series 2-1

Tribe Powers (Walks) On ![]() The 1920 Cleveland Indians made a statement by beating the favorite 1930 Philadelphia Athletics and reversing the thinking that early century teams are lacking.
The Indians wrapped up the series with in the most dramatic of fashions as they scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth in a dramatic come from behind win. Down by two runs and looking at a tied series, Charley Shore had the job of closing the door on the home team. A single a two walks loaded the bases with no one out. Connie Mack then went to Eddie Rommel out of the bullpen to put out the fire. However, Tris Speaker walks for one run. Joe Wood walks and the game is tied. And then the unthinkable....Charlie Jamieson walks and the winning run comes across the plate. The A's just lost their poise, and soured a good pitching performance by Bill Shores and and a three RBi day by Mule Haas. Guy Blossom pitched average at best, but in the end became a suprize winner. The Indians just seemed to be more mentally tough in this series and came out winners. There are worth looking at no matter who they play. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 4 20 Indians win series 3-1

2004 St. Louis Cardinals vs 1981 LA Dodgers 1981 LA Dodgers Record: 63-47 Finish: Won World Series over NY Yankees Manager: Tommy Lasorda Home: Dodger Stadium Runs Scored: 450 Runs Allowed: 356 Team ERA: 3.01 Team AVG: .262 Home runs: 82 Key Players: Dusty Baker OF (.320, 49 RBI), Fernando Velenzuela P (13-7, 2.48), Steve Garvey 1B (.283, 64 RBI) In a strike shortened season the Dodgers put it all together to win it all, despite not having the marquee superstar. The pitching at Dodger Stadium as always was strong with Fernando mania in full mayhem. This team had experiance where it needed it with Garvey, Cey, and Baker. And of course Tommy Lasorda proved to be one of the very best motivators in the game. 2004 St. Louis Cardinals Record: 105-57 Finish: Won NL Pennant; Lost World Series to Boston Manager: Tony Larussa Home: Busch Stadium II Runs scored: 855 Runs allowed: 659 Team ERA: 3.75 Team AVG: .278 Home Runs: 214 Key Players: Albert Pujols 1B (.331, 46, 123 RBI), Jim Edmonds OF (.301, 42, 111), Scott Rolen 3B (.314, 34, 124) It was an incredible year number wise for this Cardinal team, and many continue to scratch their heads to how this team was dominated by Boston in the Series. Pujols was absolutely at his best this year and has a chance to show what a true great he really is, something that is great about this tournament. The pitching wasnt exactly great with the high ERA, but the defense couldnt have been better with the likes of Edmonds and Rolen sporting their skills. Pitching matchups Game 1 at Dodger Stadium: Matt Morris (15-10, 4.72) vs Fernando Velenzuela (13-7, 2.48) Game 2 at Dodger Stadium: Jason Marquis (15-7, 3.71) vs Burt Hooten (11-6, 2.28) Game 3 at Busch Stadium: Jerry Reuss (10-4, 2.30) vs Woody Williams (11-8, 4.18) Last edited by Nick Soulis; 04-03-2010 at 01:55 AM. |
