Cuba - JLW Division
We have 3 fighters in the Jr. Lightweight Division. The top seed is Joel Casamayor and he recieves a bye.
Semi-Final: Yuriorkis Gamboa vs Frankie Otero - Otero opened a gash on the right eyelid of Gamboa in the first round then reopened it in the 3rd for the TKO upset. Final: Joel Casamayor vs Frankie Otero - Despite a cut early on Casamayor dominated Otero for the full 15 rounds, scoring a pair of knockdowns and cutting Otero repeatedly. The judges scored the bout 13-1, 13-2, 13-1. Casamayor has to be considered a real force in the upcoming World Tournament. |

Cuba - FW Division
With 7 fighters our top seed, Kid Chocolate will recieve a bye.
Round 1: Sugar Ramos vs Marino Gonzalez - Ramos had little trouble with Gonzalez scoring a pair of knockdowns, the final one in the 6th for the KO. Miguel Acevedo vs Eugene Garcia - Acevedo scored the fight's lone knockdown and dominated the rest of the way for a 12-2, 11-3, 11-3 decision. Ciro Morasen vs Jose Legra - Legra scored a knockdown enroute to his upset victory over Morasen. The judges scored the fight 13-2, 10-5, 11-4. Semi-Finals: Kid Chocolate vs Jose Legra - Chocolate scored a pair of knockdowns, the final one late in the 15th for the KO. He was well ahead on all 3 cards at the time of the stop. Sugar Ramos vs Miguel Acevedo - Acevedo scored the lone knockdown then dominated the befuddled favorite Ramos to win 8-4, 8-4, 7-5. This upset ended the chance of the sweetest fight of all, Sugar & Chocolate..... ![]() Final: Kid Chocolate vs Miguel Acevedo - Acevedo used clever movement and an accurate attack to frustrate Chocolate early on then held on for what I thought would be a win (I had it 8-5 for Acevedo). The judges scored it 7-7 even, 7-6 Acevedo and 8-6 for Chocolate for a draw. Rematch: Kid Chocolate vs Miguel Acevedo - Last time Chocolate stalked Acevedo and was fortunate to earn the draw. This time he boxed Acevedo's ears off before scoring the KO in the 8th round. Chocolate moves on to the World Tourney as expected. |

We have 2 Flyweights.
Cuban Black Bill vs Oscar Suarez - Bill handled Suarez with ease circling and counterpunching effectively to earn the 11-4, 11-4, 11-4 decision. Bill moves into the World Tourney where he's expected to be a factor. |

Czech Republic
There are 2 heavyweights that will fight for the right to represent their country:
Ondrej Pala vs Petr Sedlak - Pala battered Sedlak for 3 rounds before a cut ended things at the end of the 3rd for a TKO. Sedlak also went down in the 3rd in this drubbing. There are also 2 Cruiserweights: Lubos Suda vs Rudolf Kraj - These 2 went back and forth with both men being cut and Kraj tasting canvas one time. I had the fight even going into the final round as did the judges when a cut over Kraj's left eye burst open early in the 15th for the TKO. |

Gavilan and Kid Chocolate were great winners, though I felt Napoles could have gone farther. The Cuban matches were entertaining.

And Valdez should have been matched against Teofilio! Just my opinion, of course!

When I started this I made the decision to use only the official database as I am still (albiet slowly....
sorting through bear's database... and since Teofolio wasn't a pro, I didn't include him. As for Napoles, I was suprised he didn't make it. But in his defense, he's in the single toughest weight class for Cuba.

Recap A through C
I'll not go through each country as that would take too much space. Instead I'll focus on the suprises...
Argentina: Alberto Santiago Lovell scored 4 straight knockouts to win the Heavyweight Division. He took out well known fighters such as Luis Firpo, Cesar Brion and Gregorio Peralta. The real shocker was Pedro Lovell defeating the top seeded Oscar Bonavena by disqualification! Marcelo Dominguez was by far the favorite to win the Cruiserweight Division. He threw his chance away in the final by being disqualified, sending Victor Emilio Ramirez to the tourney in his stead. In what for me personally is the biggest shocker of the entire tournament so far, the great Carlos Monzon was eliminated in his fight against Miguel Angel Arroyo. Arroyo also upset the heavily favored Jorge Castro by TKO before losing in the finals to Victor Zalazar, who was only the 5th rated Middleweight in the country. In the welterweight division Carlos Baldomir was expected to win, but he lost a decision to Juan Carlos Ceferino Villarreal who wasn't expected to be any sort of a factor. Cirilo Gil ended up winning the berth. In the Jr. Welterweight Division Juan Martin Coggi, the 3rd seed, upset the favorite Nicolino Locche to advance. Luis Federico Thompson was the odds on favorite to win the Lightweight Division, and Justo Suarez was considered a dark horse. Suarez fought the favored Carlos Aro not once but 2 times (draw, split decision) to make the finals against Thompson who then threw it all away with a blatant foul. Australia: The Middleweight Division was full of suprises as top rated Les Darcy fell to a huge underdog in Jim Hall in the semi-finals. The other highly rated Middleweight, Dave Sands dropped a decision to a mid level fighter named Sam Soliman. Soliman ended up earning a TKO in the 12th, but considering the level of competition in the middleweight division, it must be considered a shocker! I don't normally show TB ratings in my blurbs, but this one's a must. Jimmy Carruthers was the odds on favorite to win the Bantamweight Division with his rating of 10. He was defeated by TKO against Joe Russell, only rated 2! Another simply huge upset! Elley Bennett ended up winning this weight class. Belgium: Karel Sys was expected to breeze to the tourney in the Heavyweight Division. Someone forgot to tell little known Pierre Charles however as he defeated Sys by TKO in the 14th. Cyrille Delannoit was off the boards in Vegas as there was noone expected to give him any competition for the Middleweight berth. He threw that away with a foul in the 10th against the unknown Leon Fouquet. Canada: George Chuvalo won the Heavyweight Division as expected, but there was one MAJOR upset of note when Raymond Olubowale (who?.... ) earned the unanimous decision over highly rated Trevor Berbick.Cuba: Florentino Fernandez was fully expected to be the Lightweight entrant for Cuba. Emory Cabana, a decent fighter had other plans as he took Fernandez the full 15 rounds in winning the decision. I fully expect more upsets as the tournament continues. We've had plenty to get things started!

I'll start posting recaps on a regular basis. Also I plan on posting a team list at the end of qualifying and may post a poll for a week or 2 on which teams ya'll feel will win the most medals.
There will be a Gold, Silver, and 2 bronze medals for each weight class. |

DR Congo
I'll post all results for DR Congo on this thread:
Heavyweights: We have 3 heavyweights all rated the same so I picked Biko Botowamungo as the top seed just because I got a kick out of his name... ![]() Semi-Final: Toto Mubenga vs Rogers Yamba - Yamba built up a lead (I had it 6-4 Yamba) on 2 of the 3 cards. 5-5, 7-3, 7-3 when with 2 seconds left in the 11th round the referee in-explicitly stopped the bout leaving the crowd stunned! He felt that Mubenga was taking too much damage and was unable to defend himself even though he was obviously fighting back! Final: Biko Botowamungo vs Rogers Yamba - Some good action at times in this one with Yamba going down once, but otherwise outfighting Yamba to earn the 11-2, 9-4, 8-5 decision. Light Heavyweights: Only 2 fighters here. Lolenga Mock vs Mohamed Siluvangi - Neither man went down, and there were a lot of close rounds but the judges felt Mock the better man with scores of 10-4, 10-4, 10-3. Tshimanga M'Biye recieves the Super Middleweight berth. Albert Ngimbi recieves the Middleweight berth. Junior Middleweights: 2 fighters will meet for this berth. Alex Bunema vs Jean Pierre Iniama - Iniama looked clueless in this one, losing 11-4, 11-4, 11-4. Bunema earns the World Tourney berth. Welterweight: We have 3 fighters here so the top seed, Valery Kayumba will recieve the bye. Semi-Final: Andre Kimbu Mboma vs Elvis Mbwakongo - Mboma scored 1 knockdown and did just barely enough to eke out the decision 8-5, 7-6, 7-6. Final: Valery Kayumba vs Andre Kimbu Mboma - Mboma went down 2 times in the 13th and 3 times in the 15th but survived to send the decision to the judges. The rounds system didn't help him much as he lost 12-2, 12-3, 11-2. Kayumba heads to the World Tourney. Tusikoleta Nkalankete is the Jr. Welterweight representative. |

Denmark - Part 1
Heavyweight:
Hans Jorgen Jacobsen vs Knute Hansen - Jacobsen has little trouble scoring a KO in the 8th over Hanson to earn a bout with top seeded Brian Nielsen. Brian Nielsen vs Hans Jorgen Jacobsen - Nielsen earns a hard fought unanimous decision against the game Jacobsen to earn the tourney berth. Cruiserweight: Johny Jensen vs Anders Hugger - Jensen wins a close battle against the game Hugger in this dull fight for the Cruiserweight berth. Super Middleweight: Rudy Markussen earns the slight upset over Mads Larsen with the majority decision. Final: Mikkel Kessler vs Rudy Markussen - Kessler scores 4 knockdowns against the overmatched Markussen to pitch a near shutout decision win. Kessler is considered a shining star for the Denmark team. Tom Bogs is the Middleweight entrant for Denmark. Jr. Middleweight: Reda Zam Zam vs Michael Rask - Zam Zam earns a hard fought unanimous decision against Rask to earn the berth. |

Denmark - Part 2 - Welterweights
Welterweights:
9 entrants, so there will be a fight-in bout. Fight-In: Allan Vester vs Chris Christensen - Both men went at it with furious intent, but Vester was the more dominant, taking a solid lead before the fight was ended due to a horrid cut over Christensen's right eye. Score it a 8 TKO for Vester who makes the 8 man tourney. Round 1: Thomas Damgaard vs Allan Vester - Damgaard scores a pair of knockdowns in a dominating decision 11-3 on all 3 cards. Frank Olsen vs Christian Bladt - Olsen was fortunate, as most observers felt that Bladt handled him in this 7-6 (bladt), 7-7, 7-7 majority draw. Rematch at the end of the round. Al Hasan vs Joergen Hansen - Hansen held off a tough Hassan for a 7-6, 9-5, 9-5 decision. Waldemar Holberg vs Gert Bo Jacobsen - Holberg cut up Jacobsen in this one, building up a lead, then held off a furious charge (including a knockdown in the 15th round!) to win a narrow split decision 8-6, 6-7, 8-6. Rematch: Christian Bladt vs Frank Olsen - Both men went back and forth in this hotly contested bout that I scored 7-6 for Olsen. The judges scored it 7-7, 8-5 Olsen, 7-6 Bladt and we have a 2nd straight draw! Rematch Coming up. Rematch Part Deaux: Christian Bladt vs Frank Olsen - Another very close bout ( I had it even) that the judges saw going Bladt's way. In the 13th round however, Bladt headbutted Olsen, cutting him badly. Olsen became incensed, going after Bladt with everything in his arsenal, battering him until Bladt's corner threw in the towel for the 13 TKO! Round 2: Thomas Damgaard vs Joergen Hansen - This fight had enough knockdowns to please the most jaded fan as Damgaard and Hansen tore into one another with reckless abandon throughout! Damgaard survived 3 knockdowns by the hard itting Hansen before putting Hansen away for a 10 count in the 10th round on his 5th knockdown! Frank Olsen vs Waldemar Holberg - Holberg took the first round, and looked well on the way to taking the 2nd when he threw a low blow that was totally blatent to earn a DQ. Olsen's voice sounded much higher than normal during the press conference afterwards. Final: Thomas Damgaard vs Frank Olsen - Olsen was rocking Damgaard in this good action bout, frustrating him along the way when for the 2nd straight fight Olsen was the victim of a debilitating low blow. Damgaard was disqualified sending Olsen to Team Denmark as the Welterweight entrant. |

Denmark - Part 3
Soeren Soendergaard is the Jr. Welterweight entrant.
Lightweights: We have 6 entrants, so there will be 2 fight - bouts. Fight-In: Joergen Johansen vs Peter Lauritz Jacobsen - Johansen battered Jacobsen in the 1st round, then in the middle of what seemed to be a hotly contested 2nd round Johansen took over again. The referee seemed a bit quick to stop the bout, handing Jacobsen the 2 TKO. Dennis Holbaek Pedersen vs Johannes Jergensen - Holbaek Pedersen worked hard to wear Jergensen down, then landed a thundering hook that laid Jergensen out for the count in the 10th round! Semi-Finals: Battling Nelson vs Joergen Johansen - Both men stood toe to toe with Johansen getting the better of it early in the 1st round, but then Nelson landed a series of bombs to end the fight with 2 seconds left in the 1st as the referee stepped in to end it! 1 TKO for the heavily favored Nelson. Boerge Krogh vs Dennis Holbaek Pedersen - Krogh breezed through this fight winning 11-4, 10-5, 11-4 to move into the finals against Battling Nelson. Final: Battling Nelson vs Boerge Krogh - Nelson showed great patience against the puzzling Krogh before finally landing a brilliant uppercut to score the KO in the 8th round. Nelson is expected to be a centerpiece of Team Denmark. Spend Abazi gains the Featherweight berth. The Bantamweight entrant will be Johnny Bredahl. Steffen Noerskov is the default Flyweight entrant. |

Dominican Republic - Part 1
There are 2 Heavyweight entrants:
Nagy Aguilera vs Fernely Feliz - Auguilera boxed well early on, using his rapier jab to open a cut under the right eye of Feliz, and causing swelling around the left eye. He faded in the 2nd half of the fight as Feliz started finding the range, coming on strong. The fight ended up going the distance. The judges scored the fight 7-7, 7-5 Feliz, and 8-6 for Aguilera for a draw. Rematch: Feliz was far more agressive in this one, controling the pace of the fight as well as cutting the ring off well as he pounded Aguilera unmercifully throughout. The fight was mercifully stopped in the 13th when Aguilera's left eye was completely swollen shut for the TKO! Feliz earns his way into the World Tourney. Merqui Sosa will represent his country as the Light Heavyweight entrant. 2 entrants at for the Super Middleweight berth: Jorge Amparo vs Jerson Ravelo - Ravelo survives a 4th round knockdown to force the decision, but it was a moot point as Amparo wins handily 10-3, 10-4, 9-4. The 2 Middleweight gladiators are: Giovanni Lorenzo vs Julio Cesar Green - Lorenzo was dominating in this one, taking the first 3 rounds before scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 4th, then pummeling Green as the crowd shouted for the ref to stop it! He finally did, handing Lorenzo the one sided 4 round TKO. We have a pair of Jr. Middleweight combatants: Luis Santana vs Angel Beltre - Santana scores 4 knockdowns in demolishing Beltre. He scored the final 3 in the decicive 11th, with the 3rd being for the count! With 5 Welterweight entrants, we'll have a fight-in bout. Fight-In: Jose Baret vs Pedro Sanchez - Baret battered Sanchez unmercifully for 13 rounds before the referee finally ended it towards the end of that round. Baret scored a spectacular 7 knockdowns against the overmatched Sanchez, in what was expected to be a "pick-em" battle. Round 1: Delvin Rodriguez vs Jose Baret - Baret had forged a lead through 10 rounds before Rodriguez landed a wicked left uppercut that was lights out for Baret in the 11th! Fausto Rodriguez vs Jose Joaquin Rosa Gomez - Rodriguez scored 3 knockdowns and held off a game Rosa Gomez to earn the decision by the narrow score of 9-6, 8-7, 8-7. Final: Delvin Rodriguez vs Fausto Rodriguez - In what was an excellent back and forth fight, with each man taking 4 rounds according to each judge, it was a shame when a cut on Fausto Rodriguez's left eyelid burst wide open in the 9th to force the TKO win for Delvin Rodriguez who moves to the World Tournament. |

Dominican Republic - Part 2
We have 3 entrants for the Jr. Welterweight Division. Miguel Montinilla, the top seed will fight the winner of the following bout:
Pedro Saiz vs Justo Sencion - After an action packed first round, Saiz came out smoking in the 2nd, landing bomb after bomb before landing the KO hook near the end of the round for the 2 KO. Final: Miguel Montinilla vs Pedro Saiz - Saiz survived a knockdown in the 6th round of a close fight to scor the KO in the 7th and upset the top seeded Montinilla and earn a berth in the World Tourney. With 7 fighters entered in the Lightweight tourney, top seeded Vilomar Fernandez will recieve a bye. Round 1: Teo Cruz vs Armando Reyes - Cruz was simply dominating, pumping his Jab at Reyes all night long (landed more jabs than Reyes did total punches!). It was that jab that opened a cut over the right eye of Reyes, then kept widening the cut until it was so bad that the fight was stopped in the 13th for the TKO. Victoriano Sosa vs Francisco Alvarez - Sosa scored 3 knockdowns, the final one for the 10 count in the 10th round. Darling Jiminez vs Antonio Ramirez - Jiminez won the first 4 rounds handily, but noone expected the lightening fast thunderous hook right at the start of the 5th round that laid Ramirez out like a Christmas Goose! Semi-Finals: Vilomar Fernandez vs Darling Jiminez - Fernandez survived a scare in the 7th when he went down for a 9 count to dominate the rest of the way, earning the 12-3, 12-3, 11-4 decision. Teo Cruz vs Victoriano Sosa - Cruz went down 2 times and Sosa down once within the first 4 rounds, but it was the nasty cut suffered by Sosa that ended things for the TKO in the 5th round. Final: Vilomar Fernandez vs Teo Cruz - Fernandez and Cruz put on an entertaining Jab-Fest in this one, with Cruz ahead on 2 of the 3 cards when Fernandez's jab opened a nasty cut inside the right eyebrow of Cruz to end things early in the 5th round by TKO. Fernandez earns the Lightweight berth. There will be 3 entrants for the Junior Lightweight berth. Wilson Rodriguez gets the top seed and will fight the winner of the first bout: Edwin Santana vs Ezequiel Sanchez - Santana opened a cut on the right eyelid of Sanchez early on, and his corner couldn't stem the claret flow. In the 4th, it became so bad that the fight was ended for the 4 TKO on cuts. Final: Wilson Rodriguez vs Edwin Santana - Rodriguez scored 3 knockdowns in the final 2 rounds to cap a solid decision, 9-5 on all 3 cards. Rodriguez earns the berth in the World Tourney. Antonio Elpidio Diaz will be the Featherweight entrant. |

Dominican Republic - Part 3
We have 6 entrants for the Jr. Featherweight division, so the 2 top seeds recieve a bye. They are Hector Acero-Sanchez and Joan Guzman.
Round 1: Agapito Sanchez vs Hector Julio Avila - This wasn't a pretty fight, as they stayed in ring center for most of the bout. Sanchez was forging a lead when he was cut by Avila early on. Avila then reopened the cut several times, forcing the TKO on cuts in the 9th round. He was behind 4-3, 4-2, 4-2 at the time. Freddy Cruz vs Leo Cruz - Leo Cruz was the superior tactician in this one, forcing Freddy Cruz to be the agressor, then making him pay throughout with punches from all angles. The judges scored the bout 10-5, 9-6, 10-5 for Leo Cruz. Semi-Finals: Hector Acero-Sanchez vs Hector Julio Avila - Both men had their moments, as this was a very close yet dull fight. It was ended in the 14th when Avila's right eyelid started gushing blood from a reopened cut. Joan Guzman vs Leo Cruz - Both of these fighters were better known for their defense and ring movement, but they stood toe to toe for most of the fight, rocking each other throughout the first 7 action packed rounds. In the 8th, Guzman landed several shots that sent Cruz reeling, then capped it off with a wicked combo that put Cruz down for 10! Final: Hector Acero-Sanchez vs Joan Guzman - Guzman was by far the stronger fighter landing bombs throughout. 3 knockdowns and 15 rounds later Guzman walked away with an 13-2, 11-4, 11-4 decision and the berth for the World Tourney. In the Bantamweight division, Domingo Guillen will represent his country. We have a pair of combatants for the Flyweight berth: Ignacio Espinal vs Eleoncio Mercedes - Espinal scored 3 knockdowns enroute to a 8-6, 10-4, 9-3 decision. There are 4 warriors vying for the Junior Flyweight slot: Semi-Finals: Manuel Jesus Herrera vs Francisco Quiroz - Herrera dominated Quiroz throughout, scoring a pair of knockdowns early before scoring the KO in the 8tth on the 3rd knockdown. Juan Antonio Guzman vs Hector Melendez - Melendez boxed beautifully the first 10 rounds, building up a solid lead. In the 11th, Guzman finally got to him, scoring a pair of knockdown, with the final one tolling 10! Final: Juan Antonio Guzman vs Manuel Jesus Herrera - Great action bout with Guzman going down early, then coming back strong, scoring a pair of knockdowns of his own in the 10th. The fight was even at 5 rounds each on all 3 cards when early in the 11th Herrera reopened a cut suffered by Guzman earlier in the fight. It bled so badly that the fight was halted, with Herrera gaining the 11th round TKO. Rafael Torres is the lone entrant, thus recieves the berth for the Straweight division. |
