Rangers Keep Rolling
Wednesday, June 1, 1977

The winning ways of the Texas Rangers continue as Bert Blyleven (7-2, 2.62 ERA) holds the powerful Boston Lineup to just four hits - two by 1B George Scott (.245, 18 RBI) - and one earned run while striking out nine as the Rangers win 4-1 at Arlington Stadium. The win is the 11th in their last 12 games and puts Texas back in the lead in the AL West by a 1/2 game over California.

"When Bert is pitching like he was today, I will confess I feel bad for the other team." Texas 1B Mike Hargrove said after the game. "He has that big sweeping curveball and can spot his fastball anywhere - I am just glad to be on his team and not against him."

Juan Beniquez (.229, 5 HR, 17 RBI) provided all of the offense Texas would need as he took Red Sox starter Mike Paxton (3.50 ERA) deep in the third inning for a three-run home run that the Rangers never looked back from.

"It's the same thing that has been happening all year," Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk said as he threw his gear into his locker. "We either hit well and don't pitch worth a damn or we pitch great and can't hit worth sh*t. Either way, it's a loss for us - and it sucks."

American League News
Kansas City (23-21, 8-11 away) at Toronto (26-21, 17-10 home)
Toronto rookie Jim Clancy (8-0, 2.76 ERA) runs his winning streak to eight games as he throws his first complete game of the season in a 6-1 win over the Royals at Exhibition Stadium. Clancy permits six hits and allows the one run while striking out four. Al Woods (.304, 19 RBI) and Dave McKay (.381, 4 RBI) each drive in a pair of runs to pace the offense. Jim Colborn (5-3) takes the loss for Kansas City.

Baltimore (20-27, 11-12 away) at Chicago (18-27, 8-11 home)
Baltimore storms back from five runs down to tie the game going into the ninth inning, only to have Eric Soderholm (.217, 26 RBI) hit a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the frame to give the White Sox a 6-5 victory. Richie Zisk (.258) hits three singles and Oscar Gamble (.250, 22 RBI) drives in two runs on his sixth home run of the year for Chicago while Larry Harlow ( .269, 19 RBI) has three runs batted in for Baltimore in the loss.

New York (24-25, 11-10 away) at Minnesota (19-27, 5-11 home)
Minnesota starter Pete Redfern (1-8, 4.52 ERA) finally gets into the win column as he blanks the Yankees 1-0 by allowing just five hits through seven innings. Ed Figueroa (4-5, 2.12 ERA) is the complete game loser as he gives up just four hits, but a triple to Rod Carew (.277, 18 RBI) after a Butch Wynegar (.295) single brings in the only run of the game. Wynegar has two of the Twins four hits in the game. Gary Serum (5.54 ERA), Jeff Holly (3.13 ERA) and Tom Johnson (12 SV, 3.29 ERA) hold down the fort for Redfern.

Cleveland (26-20, 12-9 away) at Detroit (23-24, 10-14 home)
The Indians quest for the division lead was put on hold with one swing of the bat as Steve Kemp (.286, 9 HR, 18 RBI) sent a pitch from Cleveland closer Dave LaRouche (2-3) into the right field seats in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Tigers a 4-3 triumph over the Tribe. Mark Fidrych (3.16 ERA) goes 10 innings in getting a no-decision, giving up three runs while allowing 10 hits and striking out five. Lou Whitaker (.267) strokes three base hits for the Detroit while Rick Manning (.246, 21 RBI) does the same for Cleveland along with two runs batted in.

Oakland (18-28, 7-15 away) at Seattle (19-32, 9-14 home)
Oakland's Earl Williams (.214, 3 HR, 9 RBI) breaks a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth with a two-out solo home run, then watches in disbelief as the Mariners rally in the bottom of the inning as pinch hitter Joe Lis (.239, 12 RBI) doubles home Juan Bernhardt with nobody out off of closer Bob Lacey (0-2, 2 BS) to tie the game and pinch runner Tommy Helms tags up and scores the winning run on consecutive fly balls to give Seattle the 4-3 comeback victory. Seattle starter Byron McLaughlin (3.13 ERA) allows four hits over seven innings and Stan Thomas (3-5, 4.86 ERA) pitches the final two innings to get the win.

National League News
Los Angeles (25-24, 13-14 away) at Houston (24-23, 14-12 home)
The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to plummet as they drop their fifth straight contest, this one 7-1 to Joaquin Andujar (5-5, 3.31 ERA), who manages to deliver more hits (3) than he gives up to the entire Dodger lineup as he throws a complete game two-hitter. Andujar also drives in two runs in the victory and is hitting .321 in 28 at-bats on the year. Eight game winner Doug Rau (3.77 ERA) suffers his third loss, giving up seven earned runs in just over six innings of work.

Pittsburgh (33-13, 17-6 away) at Philadelphia (28-18, 14-11 home)
Ed Ott (.288, 17 RBI) has four hits and drives in three runs to lead the Pirates to a 7-4 victory and a three game sweep over the hometown Philadelphia Phillies. Bruce Kison (6-3, 2.96 ERA) goes eight innings, striking out six while allowing two runs on seven Phillies hits. Tim McCarver (.274, 17 RBI) and Davey Johnson (.285) each had three hits for Philadelphia, with McCarver driving in two runs. The loss puts the Phillies a distant second in the division, six games behind the Pirates.

Montreal (19-27, 10-16 away) at New York (17-32, 8-15 home)
An error by newly recalled SS Pepe Frias (his 1st) to lead off the 16th inninng would give the Mets the extra out they needed as Bruce Boisclair (.243, 7 RBI) collects his third hit of the game - a single that scores Leo Foster and gives New York a 4-3 win over the Expos. Both Montreal's Steve Rogers (3.08 ERA) and Tom Seaver (3.69 ERA) of the Mets pitched well in their no-decisions with Seaver striking out six batters while Rogers whiffed eight. Tony Perez (.230, 12 RBI) delivers two doubles and a single and Warren Cromartie (.307, 7 RBI) drives in two runs with his ninth double of the season in the losing effort.

San Diego (20-34, 10-16 away) at San Francisco (26-22, 12-12 home)
Giants starter Ed Halicki (7-4, 3.70 ERA) throws his second complete game of the season, but San Francisco loses to the Padres, 3-1 as Bob Shirley (3-3, 4.16 ERA) and Rollie Fingers (10 SV, 7.15 ERA) combine for a three-hitter. Halicki gives up seven hits and three earned runs while striking out five in the loss as Dave Winfield (.292, 20 RBI) hits a bases loaded, three RBI double in the second inning. Shirley strikes out six in the win, going eight innings and allowing one unearned run.

Atlanta (22-27, 8-17 away) at Cincinnati (28-18, 14-8 home)
Fred Norman (8-2, 2.55 ERA) goes 8 1/3 innings, striking out seven while allowing just four hits and one earned run to give Cincinnati a 4-2 victory over the Braves and their fifth straight win. The Reds hit four doubles and a solo home run by Joe Morgan (.204, 4 HR, 22 RBI) off of Atlanta starter Andy Messersmith (5-6, 3.35 ERA), who went the distance in the loss. Bill Pocoroba (.282, 17 RBI) has a double and two singles for Atlanta in defeat.

Chicago (22-25, 10-11 away) at St. Louis (23-24, 15-13 home)
Not only does Brian Bonham (4-4, 3.62 ERA) throw his third complete game of the season in Chicago's 8-3 victory over the Cardinals, but he also delivers three hits - including a double and a triple - and drives in three runs to help his cause and giving the Cubs just their third win in their last 11 games. Lou Brock (.232) has a single, double and triple and Keith Hernandez (.278, 2 HR, 20 RBI) hits a two-run home run in the loss.

Aase Is Aces
Thursday, June 2, 1977

The powerful Texas Rangers team was held in check today as Red Sox rookie Don Aase (3-1, 1.77 ERA) manages to hold them to seven hits - all singles - while striking out three in a complete game 5-0 victory over Nelson Briles (4-6) and the Rangers.

Fred Lynn (.268, 20 RBI) hits his ninth home run of the year and 37-year-old Carl Yastrzemski (.327, 24 RBI) scores twice and drives in another with a triple, his 51st of his career. Lynn's home run was the 50th for Boston this season, leading all of baseball.

"With the lineup we have, one of us is bound to get some good pitches to swing at - they can't walk us all." Lynn said after the game. "We just haven't been coming through like we should. We are much better hitters than our averages or our record indicates."

Mike Hargrove (.267) has three of the seven Texas hits in the loss.

American League News
Oakland (18-29, 7-16 away) at Seattle (20-32, 10-14 home)
Led by Dan Meyer (.265, 19 RBI), Seattle wins a slugfest against the Athletics, 12-6 at the Kingdome. Meyer singles, doubles and hits his third home run of the season - scoring twice and driving in four runs while Joe Lis (.250, 14 RBI) and Julio Cruz (.228, 14 RBI) have two RBI apiece. Oakland hits three two-run home runs off of starter Dick Pole (4.80 ERA), but cannot match the timely Mariners hitting as they score five of their 12 runs with two outs - most of which in the seven-run seventh inning. Newly resigned Doc Medich (5-5) takes the loss for the A's.

Cleveland (26-21, 12-10 away) at Detroit (24-24, 14-10 home)
Down 3-0 to Cleveland, the Tigers pull to within one when Ben Oglivie (.270, 10 HR, 37 RBI) hits a two-run home run in the sixth but can get no closer as the Indians hold on for a 3-2 win. Jim Norris (.240) and Ray Fosse (.230) each record a pair of hits for the Tribe as Al Fitzmorris (5-4, 2.72 ERA) goes eight innings allowing nine hits and the Oglivie homer. Jim Kern (0.84 ERA) throws a scoreless ninth for his 10th save.

New York (24-26, 11-11 away) at Minnesota (20-27, 6-11 home)
Reggie Jackson (.307, 15 HR, 36 RBI) continues his assault on American League pitching, smashing his league leading 15th home run in the Yankees 5-2 victory over Minnesota. Thurman Munson (.270) singles, doubles and scores two runs while Dock Ellis (5-4, 3.02 ERA) shuts down the Twins offense, holding them to six hits and two runs over his eight innings of work.

Rick Dempsey (.231) hits a pair of doubles and scores twice to give Baltimore a split in the two game series. Al Bumbry (.264, 11 RBI) and Rich Dauer (.255, 14 RBI) also have a pair of hits for the O's.

The Mets win their third straight as Joe Torre (.270, 5 RBI) has a four-hit day - including a double and his first home run of the year - scoring two runs and driving in two more as New York clips Montreal by a 5-3 score. Pepe Frias (.455, 1 RBI) has three singles for Montreal in the loss and starter Dan Warthen drops to 0-6 as he fails to get the seventh inning for fifth time in seven games.

Houston (25-23, 10-11 away) at Cincinnati (29-18, 16-7 home)
Bob Watson (.301, 40 RBI) drives in all four Houston runs as the Astros win their eighth consecutive game and move into a tie with San Francisco for second place in the NL West with a 4-2 victory over the Reds at Riverfront Stadium. Rockledge lost yet again - so we are just one game out with two games to play.

We jumped out to a 7-2 lead after four innings and was able to cruise to a nice, easy victory - even if the game ended with the bases full of Cubs baserunners. Adams (.307, 25 RBI) and his three singles was akey, as was Ed Hansen (.321, 11 RBI) and Dave Kramer (.264, 9 RBI) who each drove in two runs. Newton was solid, giving up eight hits in seven innings, but six walks contributed to a very high pitch count - which led to me putting in some less than stellar relievers (Bruce Oliver & Tim Taylor) - which led to the game being a tad bit closer than it needed to be.

6/3 - Dodgers Win Behind Hooton
Friday, June 3, 1977

Having lost five games in a row and 13 of their last 17, the Dodgers were in desperate need of a jump start. Burt Hooton (4-3, 2.82 ERA) possibly provides the spark today as he blanks the San Diego Padres 3-0 on just an eighth inning single by Merv Rettenmund (.282). Hooton strikes out seven in the game to go along with three walks

"I felt really good out there. I made a few mistakes, but luckily got away with them. Still, it's hard to believe I came six outs away from a no hitter." Hooton said afterward.

Hooton was backed by the offense of Rafael Landestoy (.270), Steve Garvey (.243, 26 RBI) and Reggie Smith (.271), who each have a pair of hits while scoring a run apiece.

American League News
Baltimore (21-28, 12-13 away) at Kansas City (23-22, 15-10 home)
Kansas City scores three runs in the eighth inning thanks in part to RBI singles from Hal McRae (.222, 21 RBI) and pinch hitter Bob Molinaro (.271, 11 RBI) off of Orioles starter Ross Grimsley (3-8) to get by Baltimore and win 6-4. George Brett (.271), Hal McRae (.222, 21 RBI) and Lee May (.382, 7 RBI) each have a pair of hits and score two runs apiece in the victory.

Carl Yastrzemski (.340, 25 RBI) hits his 10th home run of the year as part of his 3-for-3 day, but the Red Sox fall to Minnesota 4-3 when Willie Norwood (.269, 2 HR, 6 RBI) hits a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth on the 133rd pitch of starter Fergie Jenkins (5-5, 3.94 ERA). Norwood, playing for the injured Larry Hisle, stuck out in his prior three at-bats.

Roger Moret (3-1, 4.29 ERA) strikes out eight and gives up six hits in 7 1/3 innings while John Ellis (.304, 1 HR, 13 RBI) and Claudell Washington (.288, 6 HR, 36 RBI) each hit two-run home runs to lead the Rangers to a 5-2 win over Milwaukee. Sixto Lezcano (.271, 6 HR, 30 RBI) hits a solo home run as part of a three hit day for the Brewers in a game where Robin Yount was ejected in the third inning for arguing a strike three call.

New York (25-26, 12-11 away) at Chicago (19-28, 9-12 home)
Yankees starter Ron Guidry (8-2, 2.01 ERA) rebounds from his second loss of the season with a dominating performance against Chicago, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) through eight innings as New York tops the White Sox, 3-2. Willie Randolph (.254) hits a pair of doubles in the victory.

Cleveland (27-21, 13-10 away) at Seattle (21-32, 11-14 home)
Cleveland could do little against Rick Jones (3-6, 4.08 ERA), as they manage just six singles and a double against the Mariners starter in eight innings as they lose the game 7-1 at the Kingdome. Ruppert Jones (.274, 28 RBI) hits a pair doubles and Bill Stien (.242) collects a trio of singles as Seattle win their third in a row.

Toronto (27-21, 9-11 away) at Oakland (18-30, 11-13 home)
Toronto scores four runs in the first three innings thanks a three-run home run from Ron Fairly (.289, 9 HR, 32 RBI) and a solo shot from Otto Velez (.273, 9 HR, 28 RBI), then hang on and score a 4-3 road win over the Athletics in from of just 7,635 at the Oakland Coliseum Sheldon Mallory (.176, 2 HR, 7 RBI) homers for Oakland in the loss, their fourth in a row and eighth in their last nine games.

Phil Niekro (7-4, 2.50 ERA) has his knuckball dancing as he strikes out six San Francisco Giants on his way to allowing three base hits and one walk and a 4-0 victory at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Darrel Chaney (.371) hits two doubles and a single while Gary Matthews (.244, 15 RBI) hits a pair of two-baggers as well to pace the Braves offense. George Thomasson (.280) has two of the three Giants hits in the game.

In the nightcap, Gary Matthews (.254, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 18 SB) chalks up three more hits, including a two-run smash to left to give Atlanta an early 5-0 lead that they would not relinquish - winning 6-4 to complete the doubleheader sweep. Philadelphia (28-19, 14-11 away) at New York (19-32, 9-15 home)

Chicago (23-25, 11-11 away) at Pittsburgh (34-13, 18-6 home)
Chicago's Ray Burris (3-7, 3.94 ERA) wins a pitchers duel with Jerry Reuss (5-2, 2.48 ERA) of the Pirates as he holds Pittsburgh to four hits and one run through eight innings in a 2-1 victory. Gevenva SS Jing-bo Au-Young commits his 26th error - I love that guy.

This was a fun game until the ninth inning. Brian Little (1.53 ERA) made his second start and went 6 2/3 innings of shutout baseball before tiring with a 3-0 lead. I went with Guasper Hell (1 BS, 4.50 ERA) who promptly gave up five runs and left me in a hole in the bottom of the frame. After two quick outs, the fourth single by Dicky (.336, 22 RBI) , one by pinch hitter William Turner (.226) which was followed by back-to-back walks to Jesus Camacho and Paco Bruno left me one run down and Mark Hutchinson (.275, 1 HR, 17 RBI) at the plate. Hutch comes through and crushed the ball on the first pitch, just barely clearing the left field wall for a walk-off grand slam for a 8-5 win and one more lifeline. Rockledge won against Batavia, leaving us one game to decide it - One game out with one to go.

6/4 - Athletics Fire McKeon
Saturday, June 4, 1977

Jack McKeon's time as Oakland manager came to an end earlier today when GM Charlie Finley fired him after an 18-31 start. McKeon, in his first season with the team, had a 215-205 record in three seasons with Kansas City and was given the task of leading a team ravaged of talent by free agency. Unfortunately, winning just eight games in the month of May seemed to seal McKeon's fate.

"The bottom line is about performance and our performnace is not up to my expectations. Jack is a fine coach, but there just doesn't seem to be any connection with the players." Finley said at a press conference at Oakland Coliseum.

So now the job search begins anew in Oakland, where no manager has lasted longer than three seasons since Connie Mack in 1950.

"There is no timetable for finding a replacement, but it will be done quickly. Until that time, Cal Ermer will run the club on a temporary basis." Finley said.

McKeon could not be reached for comment after being told of his dismissal.

American League News
Baltimore (21-29, 12-14 away) at Kansas City (24-22, 16-10 home)
Paul Splittorff (4-6, 3.35 ERA) will be the first to tell you, when he's on - he's outstanding. But when he's not - he's just plain awful. In Kansas City's 4-0 win over the Orioles, Splittorff was on the good side as he strikes out six while allowing eight hits in 8 2/3 shutout innings. Jim Palmer (4-7) takes the loss in what has become an extremely trying season for the former 20-game winner. Tom Poquette (.241, 12 RBI) hits a single and a double, scoring once and driving in two runs to lead the Royals offense.

Baltimore (21-30, 12-15 away) at Kansas City (25-22, 17-10 home)
In game two, Darrell Porter (.293, 23 RBI) hammered his former team with four hits - including his fourth homer of the season - scoring three runs and driving in two runs to lead the Orioles to an 11-9 slugfest win. Kiko Garcia (.243, 9 RBI) hits two singles and a double, driving in three runs and scoring two more himself in the win. The other member of the Porter trade, Lee May (.378, 2 HR, 9 RBI), also homered for Kansas City.

Detroit (24-25, 10-14 away) at California (32-17, 12-11 home)
Dennis Leonard (4-6, 4.01 ERA) shows flashes of when he was in a Royals uniform as he strikes out seven, allows six hits and gives up one run through eight innings while Jason Thompson (.263, 29 RBI) drives in three runs on a pair of singles to lead Detroit to a 4-1 win over the Angels. Nolan Ryan (7-5) strikes out 10 hitters in 7 2/3 innings, but also walks eight while throwing 152 pitches in taking the loss.

Toronto (28-21, 10-11 away) at Oakland (18-31, 11-14 home)
In their first game since the firing of manager Jack McKeon, Oakland's Bob Heise (.302, 22 RBI) doubles in the bottom of the ninth off Jerry Garvin (1-2) to score Mitchell Page (.333) from second and give the A's a 5-4 victory over Toronto. Otto Velez (.277, 30 RBI) had tied the game in the top of the inning with his tenth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left off of closer Bob Lacey (1-2, 3 BS). Oakland starter Vida Blue (2.77) goes eight innings, giving up two unearned runs, but loses the decision on the home run by Velez.

Cleveland (27-22, 13-11 away) at Seattle (22-32, 12-14 home)
Cleveland scores four runs in the top of the ninth as Enrique Romo (1-4, 4 BS) gives up four singles, a walk and hits a batter to hand the Tribe a 7-4 victory. Bill Melton (.261, 11 RBI) has three hits on the day, driving in a run and Rick Manning (.245, 24 RBI) brings home two more on two hits as Cleveland delivers 11 hits as a team - all singles. The win puts Cleveland into a tie for first place in the division with Toronto, the first time they have been in first this late in the season since 1966.

Boston (24-26, 11-13 away) at Minnesota (21-28, 7-12 home)
Minnesota's Dave Goltz (6-3, 3.17 ERA) outpitches Reggie Cleveland of the Red Sox (6-4, 3.61 ERA) in leading the Twins to a 2-1 win at the Metrodome. Goltz goes eight innings, allowing eight hits and a Bernie Carbo (.236, 8 HR, 26 RBI) eighth inning home run while Cleveland goes the distance in the loss, giving up seven hits and both earned runs.

New York (26-26, 13-11 away) at Chicago (19-29, 9-13 home)
Chicago wins their sixth game in their last nine as Lance Johnson (.265, 13 RBI) hits a go-ahead, two-RBI double in the sixth inning to lead the White Sox to a 6-4 victory over New York. Ralph Garr (.331, 14 SB) hits a triple and two singles while Thurman Munson (.271, 3 HR, 20 RBI) hits a three-run home run for the Yankees, but New York can only manage five other hits against Chicago starter Ken Brett (7-4, 2.90 ERA).

Milwaukee (29-23, 16-12 away) at Texas (32-16, 17-9 home)
Toby Harrah (.265, 33 RBI) hits a pair of doubles, a single while driving in two and John Ellis (.311, 14 RBI) hits a solo home run as the Rangers beat Milwaukee 6-3 to give the Brewers their sixth loss in seven games. Gaylord Perry (8-3, 2.12 ERA) strikes out six and gives up seven hits and three runs (two earned) in eight innings of work. Dan Thomas (.243, 14 RBI) hits his fourth home run of the year in the loss.

National League News
Houston (27-23, 12-11 away) at Cincinnati (29-20, 15-10 home)
Pat Zachry (9-3, 3.83 ERA) wins his league high ninth game of the season 5-1, breaking the Astros nine game winning streak and keeping Houston from sweeping the Reds in their three game series. Zachry allows eight hits and strikes out five in the complete game win - helping out his cause by driving in two runs on 2-for-2 hitting, raising his average to .320 on the year. Jose Cruz (.249, 31 SB) has four singles in the loss, scoring the Astros only run.

San Francisco (27-24, 14-12 away) at Atlanta (24-28, 16-10 home)
The Giants hit three home runs, which account for all of their offense as they lose 5-3 to Atlanta in front of 18,488 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Gary Alexander (.244, 3 HR, 12 RBI), Jack Clark (.312, 6 HR, 29 RBI) and Willie McCovey (.300, 7 HR, 37 RBI) all hit solo shots, but the rest of the offense manages just three other singles. Atlanta only manages five hits, but turns them into runs thanks to four key walks By John Montefusco (4-7). Braves starter Buzz Capra (4-3, 5.37 ERA) gives up two of the homers, but strikes out six en route to the win.

St. Louis (24-25, 9-11 away) at Montreal (19-30, 9-13 home)
In a game that comes down to a battle of closers, Sam Mejias (.600, 1 RBI) singles off of Cardinals closer Clay Carroll (3-2) in the bottom of the tenth inning to bring home Warren Cromartie (.301) and give Joe Kerrigan (1-0) and Montreal a 4-3 victory. Cromartie has two doubles on the day, including one to start off the tenth. St. Louis leadoff man Lou Brock (.240, 16 RBI, 19 SB) hits a double, two singles and steals two bases in the loss.

Chicago (24-25, 12-11 away) at Pittsburgh (34-14, 16-8 home)
Jim Rooker (7-2, 2.44 ERA) kept the Pirates ship for the pennant headed straight ahead as he holds Chicago to three hits and two earned runs while striking out five through eight innings in Pittsburgh's 6-2 win over the Cubs. The win is the eighth in their last 10 games and has kept their lead in the NL East at a comfortable six games. Eight of the nine Pittsburgh starters have at least one hit (sorry Ken Macha). Ivan DeJesus (.235, 22 RBI) has two of the Cubs three hits.

Philadelphia (28-20, 14-12 away) at New York (20-32, 10-15 home)
Thanks to a three-run home run by Davey Johnson (.290, 4 HR, 20 RBI) and a double and two singles from Greg Luzinski (309, 28 RBI), Philadelphia breaks a four game losing streak with a 5-3 triumph over the Mets at Shea Stadium. John Milner (.325, 3 HR, 18 RBI) hits a two-run home run for New York for their first loss in five games.

San Diego (20-36, 10-18 away) at Los Angeles (26-25, 13-10 home)

Vic Davalillo (.239, 5 SB) delivers four singles and Davey Lopes (.263, 28 SB) scores three runs for Los Angeles to take the first two games in the three-game series. Doug Rader (.230, 5 HR, 14 RBI) hits a double and a home run for the Padres in the loss.

Gevenva SS Jing-bo Au-Young commits his 26th error - I love that guy.

Before the game, I received a phone call that not only was Dicky Hujibregts called up to Single A, but his backup Robinson Diaz was as well - effectively leaving us with no catchers. Nice. In return I get two shortstops - something I really don't need for this final game. We did everything we needed to do, winning nine of our last 10 and 12 of our last 14 to make it an actual division race - even coming from behind today to sweep Geneva. Madrigal hits a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to give us the lead and the win in a game it seemed Geneva was trying to gift wrap for us. Geneva shortstop Jing-bo Au-Yong made three errors in the game, resulting in two unearned runs - I found out afterward that those were his 26th, 27th & 28th errors of the year. His middle infield partner in crime, Antonio Farias committed his 24th error in the game as well. Still, we had four players get multiple hits - Richard Adams (.305, 26 RBI), Madrigal, Weldon Williams (.286, 19 RBI) and newcomer Ray Anderson (.500, 1 RBI) - and Tommy Campbell (1.85 ERA) got his seventh win in relief and is the anchor I need in the bullpen next year. If I'm around next year. You see, even though we did what we could, Rockledge won that final game - keeping us one game out as the season ends.

6/5 - Rivers and Zeber Lead Yanks
Sunday, June 5, 1977

Yankees CF Mickey Rivers (.258, 6 HR, 26 RBI) hits two home runs and drives in five RBI while George Zeber (.276, 18 RBI) knocks in three more as New York defeats the White Sox, 8-5.

After a two-run double by Zeber in the second, Rivers puts a capper on the six-run inning by hitting a grand slam off of Chicago starter Steve Stone (0-4, 4.13 ERA) while Zeber's sacrifice fly in the third would put the Yanks up by a 7-0 score. Starter Catfish Hunter (2-4, 4.71 ERA) cruises until the fifth inning, when Ralph Garr (.333, 18 RBI) doubles home Jack Brohamer (.270, 3 RBI) from first base to cut the New York lead to six runs however Rivers answers with a solo blast to right field the following inning. Hunter's struggles continue in the sixth as he gives up home runs to Oscar Gamble (.255, 7 HR, 23 RBI) and Richie Zisk (.255, 9 HR, 29 RBI) as part of a four run inning, but that would be as close as Chicago can get as New York leaves Comisky with a win.

"When you hit ahead of Reggie (Jackson) you are going to get some good pitches to swing at." Rivers said afterward. "I just wanted to make sure every swing counted."

Rivers is on pace to shatter his personal season best in home runs (8) and runs batted in (67), both set last year.

American League News
Toronto (28-22, 10-12 away, -- GB) at Oakland (19-31, 12-14 home, 14.5 GB)
With a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the ninth, Blue Jays closer Pete Vukovich (3 BS) uncorks a pitch past catcher Alan Ashby to allow Oakland pinch runner Manny Sanguillen to score from third and send the game into extra frames. In the 12th, Otto Velez (.281) tags up from first base on a fly out to right with two outs and Doug Ault (.303, 18 RBI) singles him home one batter later with the first pitch he sees to give Toronto the 6-5 lead and eventual win. Velez scores two runs on the day, reaching base with a double and a triple. Ron Fairly (.286, 34 RBI) drives in two with his 10th home run of the season in the sixth inning, which was followed back-to-back by a shot from Al Woods (.286, 4 HR, 20 RBI). Mitchell Page (.342) and Glenn Adams (.305, 27 RBI) each have three hit days for Oakland in the loss with Adams hitting a double and driving in a pair. The game was the first for new Athletics skipper Rick Kirkpatrick.

Cleveland (28-22, 14-11 away, -- GB) at Seattle (22-33, 12-15 home, 14.0 GB)
Rico Carty (.290, 5 HR, 34 RBI) has a four-hit day, including a two-run blast off of Gary Wheelock in the first inning, but it was a single by Rick Manning (.244, 25 RBI) in the top of the 12th innings that scores Johnny Grubb from second and gives the Tribe a 5-4 victory over Seattle. Cleveland spot starter Rick Waits (2.96 ERA) goes seven-plus innings for the third time in as many starts, giving up six hits and two runs while striking out five.

Milwaukee (29-24, 16-13 away, 0.5 GB) at Texas (33-16, 18-9 home, -- GB)
Brewers closer Bill Castro (1-1, 1.71 ERA) impodes in the bottom of the 12th inning as he loads the bases without recording an out before giving up a game-winning single to Bump Wills (.304, 26 RBI, 14 SB) to hand Texas a 6-5 win. Wills and Toby Harrah (.279) each hit four singles for the Rangers while every starter for Milwaukee has at least one hit. Of the 26 total hits between the two teams, 24 of them are singles.

Detroit (25-25, 11-14 away, 3.0 GB) at California (32-18, 12-12 home, 1.5 GB)

Oakland's search for a new manager ended today as the organization agreed to a 5-year contract with Rick Kirkpatrick that will give him a salary of $82,000. The 43-year-old Kirkpatrick was previously the coach for the Single A West Palm Beach Expos where he accumulated a 21-33 record this season. Rumors are circulating that former Athletics manager Jack McKeon has accepted the vacated West Palm Beach position.

Baltimore (22-30, 13-15 away, 7.0 GB) at Kansas City (25-23, 17-11 home, 7.5 GB)
Larry Gura (4-3, 3.72 ERA) and a pair of relievers shut down Baltimore on seven hits to give the Royals a slim 2-1 victory over the Orioles to win the four-game series. Gura throws six scoreless innings and allows just five hits before being pulled with 112 pitches. Kansas City steals four bases off of Orioles catcher Darrell Porter, two of which later turned into runs. Baltimore starter Mike Flanagan (5-6, 3.99 ERA) was almost up to the task, giving up six hits and two earned runs over 7 1/3 innings in the loss.

Boston (24-27, 11-14 away, 4.5 GB) at Minnesota (22-28, 8-12 home, 11.5 GB)

Carlton Fisk (.217, 4 HR, 16 RBI) makes it interesting in the ninth inning as he hits a three-run blast off of reliever Jim Hughes, but closer Tom Johnson (14 SV, 2.93 ERA) would enter and get the final two outs to ensue the victory.

Pirates starter Odell Jones (4-0, 1.53 ERA) throws eight innings of five-hit baseball while striking out five and Kent Tekulve (1.19 ERA) earns his 14th save as Pittsburgh sneaks past the Cubs, 1-0. The story however, is one pitch from Cubs starter Steve Renko (6-4, 2.35 ERA) to Phil Garner (.281, 4 HR, 28 RBI) of the Pirates, who sends Renko deep in the second inning for the game's only score. Renko strikes out six and allows just one other hit in his fifth complete game of the season.

"It's a shame when one pitch beats you. I really wish I had that one back." Renko said afterward.

Injuries

MR Francisco Barrios (1-6, 6.56 ERA) is expected to miss about 1-2 weeks with back spasms.
He is placed on the 15-day disabled list.
SP Mike Krukow (5-3, 3.07 ERA - AAA) recalled from Triple A Iowa.
Krukow takes Barrios' spot in the rotation and is scheduled to pitch tomorrow night.

MR Matt Keough (0-0, 12.79 ERA) is expected to miss about 4 weeks with a strained bicep.
He is placed on the 15-day disabled list.
C Tim Hosley (.214, 3 HR, 11 RBI - AAA) recalled from Triple A Iowa.
Hosley will merely be there to keep the bullpen pranks to a minmum. Of course he could probably pitch and do better than a 12.79 ERA.

2B Lee Lacy (.304, 6 HR, 32 RBI) is expected to miss about 4 weeks with a fractured wrist.
He is placed on the 15-day disabled list.
3B Jim Morrison (.233, 6 HR, 32 RBI - AAA) recalled from Triple A Oklahoma City.
Morrison will spell Mike Schmidt at 3B and possibly see some pinch at-bats. No public exposure jokes please.

Rick Kirkpatrick signed a 5-year contract worth a total of $410,000 to be Oakland's new manager.
He will make $82,000 a year through 1981.

6/6 - Andujar Shuts Down Philly
Monday, June 6, 1977

Philadelphia's tailspin continues as Joaquin Andujar (6-5, 2.98 ERA) of the Astros shuts them out on just three hits for a 5-0 victory, handing the Phillies their sixth loss in their last eight games. Andujar throws just 98 pitches in the win - 64 for strikes - while striking out just two.

Houston catcher Joe Ferguson (.187, 17 RBI) leads the way as he hits his third home run of the year in the second off of Phillies starter Larry Christenson (3-6, 4.90 ERA) in the second inning, then later doubles and scores off Christenson in the seventh.

"I was just seeing the ball really well tonight." Fergurson said to reporters afterward. "Seriously though, if I can't hit against Larry Christenson, I don't belong in the bigs - everybody hits off that guy."

"I guess we'll see if he'll hit it when it goes in his ear." Christenson shrugged when he heard of the comment.

Cesar Cedeno (.271, 3 HR, 23 RBI) hits a two-run home run in the sixth and Bob Watson (.297, 41 RBI) delivers an RBI-double in the eight inning as six of the Astros 11 hits were for extra bases.

California's Tony Solaita (.281, 10 HR, 27 RBI) and Ben Oglivie (.291, 12 HR, 40 RBI) of Detroit each hit two home runs but it is a seventh inning two-run double from Ron Jackson (.223, 2 HR, 15 RBI) that proves to be the game-winner, as the Angels win, 6-4. Injuries
CF Omar Moreno (.241, 1 HR, 5 RBI) is day-to-day for about 4 days with a cold.
Don't look for Moreno to miss any game time - even if he can blow big snot bubbles out of his nose.

LF Gary Matthews (.258, 5 HR, 21 RBI) is expected to miss about 12 months with a torn groin muscle.
He is placed on the 60-day disabled list.
RF Brian Asselstine (.333, 2 HR, 28 RBI - AAA) recalled from Triple A Richmond.
Just the mere thought of tearing my groin would put me out at least a week. Asselstine will share time with Tom Paciorek in LF.

LF Greg Luzinski (.314, 7 HR, 30 RBI) is day-to-day for about 2 weeks with fractured ribs.
Sources are telling me the "The Bull" is going to play through the rib injury. If he does, just declare him "The Man".

SS Dave Concepcion (.281, 0 HR, 19 RBI) is day-to-day for about 5 days with a fractured finger.
If you ask him which one is broken, he'll gladly show you. Just don't be offended when he gives you the finger.

WOW! Joe Ferguson just ripped LC, who was on his way to being a really good pitcher before arm troubles curtailed his career. It was said that at the end, he couldn't even reach home plate, that's how far gone his elbow was. The Phillies released him on his birthday

6/7 - Hampton Hammers Toronto
Tuesday, June 7, 1977

Bruce Bochte pounded Toronto pitching all day long, but he needed a little help in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Angels to come away with the win. After the Blue Jays tied the score in the top of the inning on the seventh home run from catcher Alan Ashby (.285, 23 RBI), Bochte led off the inning hitting his second double of the day - this one off of Toronto reliever Jerry Garvin.

"It was a slider that didn't slide." Bochte said as he sat by his locker after the game. "I thought I got all of it, but just missed it. Luckily, there was someone hitting behind me that I was happy to see back."

That someone was the returning Ike Hampton (.378, 7 HR, 17 RBI) who had missed the last 10 games with a strained thigh muscle. Bochte and Hampton hit back-to-back home runs earlier in the third inning to erase a three run deficit and tie the game and looked to combine again to end the game.

"I just wanted to drive the ball enough to get BB home." Hampton said post game.

What he did was take a 2-2 Garvin fastball and deposit it into the left field seats sending the 21,723 in attendance into a frenzy. It could be the shot in the arm the California club needs as in the 10 games Hampton missed, the Angles managed just four wins.

Perhaps Bochte summed it up best.

"The guy is a difference maker, plain and simple."

"If I have to take this team, load them on my back and carry them to the playoffs - then that is what I'll do. That is what they paid me to come here for."

Those were the words of New York Yankees slugger Reggie Jackson (.310, 42 RBI) after hitting his major league best 17th and 18th home runs - leading New York to a 3-0 victory and a three-game road sweep of the Brewers. The win also moves the Yankees past Milwaukee for third place in the American League East, just two games behind the Cleveland Indians.

Starter Ron Guidry (9-2, 1.82 ERA) certainly did his part, throwing a five-hit shutout and striking out seven. Guidry's nine wins tied him for the league lead and his 1.82 earned run average places him fourth in the majors.

"This win was important - not just to get the sweep, but to also get us another step closer to our goal." Guidry said as he undressed afterward.

Jackson agreed, to a point.

"Look, Guidry pitched great, but if I don't hit those homers - we're still playing right now."

Easily the best formatted dynasty here. Shame it's such a slow go, but believe me, I understand how hard it is to find the time. Still a great read when you get the chance to update it.

When I started this dynasty, I knew I wanted to make it as reader friendly as possible - but I did underestimate the amount of time needed to put it up. Three kids (including a three month old) who my wife has decided to put in every extra-curricular activity imaginable has left my dwindling time even smaller.

But, I am actually ahead (in game) of where I am on here slightly AND I am on vacation this week so I was really going to put some stuff out there. That was until I found out the USB drive I had all of my notes on it died. Not a major issue - but just a pain in the rear to have to re-write stuff again.

Thanks again for the comment, didn't mean to write a book in response but I probably get more frustrated than anyone I can't get the days out faster.

Three kids myself, though a bit older. But I run a side business in addition to my main job, so the time thing gets me, too. I've changed my format for the Pastime Baseball League so many times I've lost count as I try to balance information with speed. Not easy.

6/9 - Bumbry Ends Marathon Game
Thursday, June 9, 1977

As the clocks reached midnight on the East Coast, many of the 21,833 in attendance at Fenway Park were still in their seats for the 16th inning.

Unfortunately, they didn't leave happy.

Al Bumbry (.274, 4 HR, 15 RBI) hits his second home run of the game off of Red Sox reliever Jim Willoughby (0-1, 2.08 ERA) in the top of the inning to give Baltimore a 7-6 road victory in a game that lasted nearly five hours.

"Ask me about this game tomorrow. I'm too damn tired right now." Bumbry said afterward.

The Orioles looked to be on their way to a win as Bumbry's three-run shot in the sixth gave them a 6-3 lead - a lead they would take into the eighth inning. However, Boston would score a run in the inning on a Carlton Fisk (.220, 18 RBI) RBI-single and then take advantage of errors by Elliott Maddox (his sixth) and Rich Dauer (seventh) to score a pair of runs in the ninth to tie the game.

"Our defense let us down tonight." Orioles manager Earl Weaver said bitterly. "There is a reason we lead the American League in errors - we aren't doing the basic fundamentals it takes to be successful. Until we get our heads out of our rear ends and realize that, we won't be where we need to be."

Pat Kelly (.241, 26 RBI) had three hits for Baltimore, including his 12th double of the year and rookie Eddie Murray (.293, 35 RBI) hits home run number seven in the win. Boston CF Fred Lynn (.259, 11 HR, 24 RBI) and Dwight Evans (.207, 2 HR, 6 RBI) each hit home runs, giving the Sox a league leading 57.

"If we play like we are capable, the wins will take of themselves." third baseman Doug DeCinces said. "Execution is the key - we are a talented enough team to be competing for the pennant. I mean, look at Cleveland - those guys are leading the division?!?"

The hardest thing about running a dynasty for me is trying to balance my time between playing and reporting. I'm always looking for ways to present the most information in the least amount of time.

6/10 - Jackson Hits No. 300
Friday, June 10, 1977

Many of the 24,000 who still remained at Yankees Stadium to witness the finish of the Twins crushing of their beloved boys from New York was looking for something - anything - to celebrate. Down 13-2, but were still waiting to see if Reggie Jackson could do something that has only been done 36 other times in the history of baseball - hit 300 home runs.

After giving up two runs on a single to Bucky Dent (.117, 4 RBI) and having the bases full of Yankees, Minnesota reliever Tom Burgmeier was welcomed by Jackson (.307, 19 HR, 47 RBI) as he crushed his fastball 422 feet into the upper deck in right for a grand slam. Even though New York was still down four runs, the Bronx crowd gave Reggie an ovation as he rounded the bases so loud, that you would have thought the Yanks had just won the pennant.

"Reggie's never been a person to call his shots, but Reggie was ticked at the way we were playing." Jackson said afterward. "Reggie came here for a reason - to win ball games and win championships. We can't do that by giving up 13 runs in a game. Yeah, number 300 was nice and Reggie is glad Reggie got to hit it front of the New York fans, but in the end, we lost the game and Reggie doesn't like losing."

Catfish Hunter looked remarkably hittable as Minnesota tagged him for four runs in the first inning thanks in part to a RBI double by Rod Carew (280, 21 RBI) and a two-run home run by Roy Smalley (.219, 6 HR, 19 RBI). Hunter would settle down until the fifth, but Lyman Bostock (.278, 13 RBI) and Butch Wynegar (.274, 21 RBI) would lead off the inning with back-to-back doubles and Larry Hisle (.252, 8 HR, 29 RBI) would follow a Carew intentional walk with a three-run shot the left that put the Twins up 8-1 and ended Hunter's day.

"The top of their order just killed me." Hunter said afterward. "I probably dropped my shoulder a little on my delivery causing my pitches to be higher than where I wanted them."

Bostock has three hits and scores three runs, Carew scores three times and drives in a pair, Hisle drives in four and Smalley drives in three more as the Twins get eight straight basrunners in the fifth inning en route to a seven run inning. The 13 runs are the most given up by New York this season.

Lifetime Jackson is hitting .268 with 1359 hits, 837 runs scored and 871 runs batted in. His 300 home runs places him tied with Philadelphia Phillies great Chuck Klein for 37th on the all-time career list. His 19 home runs, 47 RBI, and .606 slugging percentage this season are all major league leading totals.

American League News
Texas (36-18, 15-7 away, -- GB) at Boston (25-31, 14-14 home, 6.5 GB)
Second baseman Tim Johnson (.393, 4 RBI, 1 SB) has three hits, Carl Yastrzemski (.350, 28 RBI) hits a double and a triple and Jim Rice (.244, 32 RBI) drives in three to lead Boston to a 9-1 win. Rick Wise (5-6, 4.50 ERA) allows nine hits and one run over eight innings for the Red Sox while Texas starter Doyle Alexander (6-4, 3.61 ERA) goes just two-plus innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on seven hits while walking three.

Chicago (22-32, 12-18 away, 14.0 GB) at Baltimore (25-32, 9-15 home, 7.0 GB)
Eddie Murray (.305, 8 HR, 37 RBI) has four hits with a double and a home run, but it is a ninth inning, two-out, three-run home run by Ken Singleton (.323, 5 HR, 23 RBI) that gives the Orioles a 6-4 comeback win. Chicago had taken the lead in the top of the inning on RBI singles from Jorge Orta (.247, 28 RBI), who had a three-hit day, and Richie Zisk (.249, 30 RBI). He is placed on the 15-day disabled list.
MR Bill Butler (5-1, 2.82 ERA - AAA) recalled from Triple A Tacoma
A great start in AAA gets Butler the promotion, but he will need some good performances in the bullpen to stay.

He will earn $768,000 a year through 1980.

It's amazing to me the PhillieFever can have spinal fusion surgery and come back in less than 2 weeks and I can't even get to the All-Star break.

Time to put my working shoes on. Once the All-Star break hits, I may need to do a format change to lessen up the load.
