I'd love nothing more then a Bramble defeat but I'm trying to play fair.lol. The O'Grady-Mancini match up should be really competative and bloody.

It's hard to root against Mancini or O'Grady.
The last time I remember looking at Boom Boom's ratings in the game, he seemed a little underrated. With fighters like Mancini, you can look at his career in stages. The version who fought Arguello and the one found in the game probably look like two different fighters.

After Mancini's second loss to Bramble, he was a different fighter. If I were simming him in my universe, I would move him to post-prime after one or two fights after losing the title (if he wins one) or possibly between his 25th and 30th fight.

Same with Bramble. His chin was incredibly sturdy until he met Rosario's bombs. Some fighters are never the same after a particular loss. Fernando Vargas was never the same after Felix Trinidad. His durability was gone. Bowe wasn't the same after Golota. Cuevas iron chin was history after Hearns. The Gerry Cooney who went 13 rounds with a prime Holmes wouldn't have lasted 3 rounds - post version. That's just the way it goes in the square jungle sometimes.

Super Middleweight Bouts April 86

Rocchigiani Wins IBF Title

Everyone knew the pre-prime Punching Postman Tony Thornton (18-1-1-12) was gonna have his hands full against a prime Graciano Rocchigiani (23-1-0-18) but even he must have been disappointed by his performance as he was just dismantled by Rocchigiani in four rounds. To his credit Thornton never went down but absorbed a terrible beating in the fourth and final round. Thornton's problems began in the second round when a Rocchigiani hook opened a nast gash over his right eye. Rocchigiani completely dominated this fight his only concern was he received two warnings prior to the stoppage. The fourth round started when Rocchigiani was pasting Thornton when a jab reopened the cut. The ringside physician examined the cut and allowed the bout to continue, at this point Rocchigiani proceeded to land numerous unanswered shots that caused referee Earl Morton to jump in and stop the bout. Thornton was unhappy with the stoppage but it was in his best interest and will live to fight another day.

In the co-feature Chritophe Tiozzo (20-2-2-12) was looking to bounce back from a twelve round unanimous decision loss to Chris Eubank back in January for the EBU Super Middleweight Championship taking on top ten ranked Ron Essett (20-1-2-11) who himself was looking to bounce back from a ten round unanimous decision loss to Murray Sutherland. Esset was a slight 2-1 favorite coming into the bout. Both men fought a very close and heated battle. Both men took turns winning a round a piece thru the first four rounds. In the fifth Tiozzo's rights were starting to cause some swelling over the right eye of Essett.Essett stormed back winning rounds six, seven and eight as Tiozzo seemed to be tiring. After eight I had Essett up by two points. Tiozzo came out in the ninth knowing he was letting the fight slip away and had his best round of the fight even cutting Essett over the right eye with a searing left hook. Tiozzo came out even more determined in the tenth and even tho he easily won the round he was unable to hurt Essett as Essett climbed on his bicycle and coasted thinking he had the fight won. I scored the fight 95-95. One of the judgges agreed scoring 95-95, while one scored it 96-95 Tiozzo and the other 96-95 Essett a draw. I think that was a good decision, couldn't argue it either way it was that close.

Antoine Byrd (2-0-0-0) scored a four round unanimous decision beating Dick Young (0-1-0-0) by scores of 39-36 across the board. Byrd lost a point for hitting after the bell in the second round. Lee Fortune (0-1-1-0) remained winless in his pro campaign as he was easily outboxed by TC Darren Durrant (1-4-1-0). Scores were 39-37 in favor of Durrant.

Matthew Saad Muhammad Wins NABF Title

Matthew Saad Muhammad (18-1-0-17) captured the NABF Light Heavyweight Championship in what is the most couragous showing I have ever witnessed. His Oponent Ricky Womack (18-2-2-9) showed the most heart I have ever seen exhibited. Womack took a horrific beating and visited the canvas no less then 9 times, once in the third, once in the sixth, twice in the eighth, three times in the ninth, once in the eleventh and twice in the twelfth round Even though the bout was stopped Womack was still on his feet. Womack was never really in the fight even though he landed some clean blows Muhammed was never hurt. Womack was upset the fight was stopped with :03 left to go in the bout. Referee Mike Champion and Womack's corner may be questioned as to why they let Womack take such a beating. When questioned about Womack's heart Muhammad had this to say "I've never seen anything like it I hit him with some bombs and every time he went down I was sure it was over but damn, the kid kept getting up". Is this a fight Womack can recover from only time will tell. Tat being said Matthew Saad Muhammad looked impressive never losing his cool and just went about his business. Muhammad now stands ranked thirteenth in the division and is just a few fights away from a title shot. Whoever he faces will have their hands full with this guy.

In the co-feature the 9-2 favorite and #7 ranked Billy Douglas (18-1-1-13) was stopped in four rounds by #8 ranked Tony Willis (21-0-0-18). Douglas actually won the first three rounds handly even hurting Willis badly in the second. Willis was showing bad swelling under the right eye when he came out for the fourth and 1:00 into the round Willis launched a wild overhand right that caught Douglas flush and dropped him for a 8 count. Douglas got to his feet and Willis just reigned clean blows down on him causing referee Larry Hazzard to jump in and save Douglas from further punishment. Willis with the upset was ecstatic with the victory. "No one thought I could beat this guy and I'm not even in my prime. These guys better watch out". Willis now sits at #6 and may have earned himself a shot for the IBF title against Marviin Johnson.

Next we had Frankie Swindell (18-2-0-3) just batter 5-2 favorite Lenny LaPaglia (11-2-3-6) over eight very onesided rounds. Swindell scored a knockdown in the sixth round but was unable to put LaPaglia away. Scores were 79-72 across the board. Three youngsters also appeared on the fight card. Leeonzer Barber (2-0-0-0), Norman Bates (2-0-0-0) and Tony Renata (2-0-0-0) all won convincing four round unanimous decisions over TC's

That would be a good addition to the game. Being able to throw in the towel with a particular corner. I guess that would be more for the role playing game side of things if/when that comes about.

Seven had to be my max also. It recently happened in my Partial Eclipse of the Sonny uni when Johansson sent Ezzard Charles to the canvas. And the fight went the distance!

But then Ruby Goldstein (Paret/Griffith) was the ref so I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised.

I don't think I've played the board game in nearly twenty years, but I do recall that after an accumulation of points, the fight was stopped. So I suppose that you couldn't have this happen in the board version.

I was surprised by that as well. In the ninth when Womack was dropped three times the last time he got up after the 3:00 mark and Muhammad had 32 points and the bout still continued. maybe because it was after the bell sounded but I was sure it would be stopped at that point but nope kept going.lol

Cruiserweight Bouts April 86

Daniels Stops Davis In 8!!!

Both pre-prime combatants Robert Daniels (15-1-0-14) and Anthony Davis (12-3-1-1) met for the vacant NABF Crusierweight Championship. Davis controlled the first round as Daniels could not seem to pull the trigger. That all changed in the second round as Daniels began to land some telling blows to the jaw of Davis. Late in the fourth round a Daniels hook dropped Davis for a quick one count. Davis took the mandatory eight count and managed to survive the rest of the round. In the fifth Faniels scored two more knockdowns. At this point Daniels was up by 6 points on my card. In the sixth both men seemed to be wearing down and a Davis headbutt started some swelling above the right eye of Daniels. Davis seemed to be crawling his way back into the fight winning the sixth and seventh rounds but that was short lived as a single Daniels hook dropped Davis for the full ten count in the eighth. With the exception of Daniels being fatigued after six rounds with little damage being absorbed, he looked pretty impressive.

In the co-feature #10 ranked Bert Cooper (29-1-0-26) looked impressive en route to a fourth round knockout of # 6 ranked Alfonso Ratliff (21-1-1-14). Cooper dominated this one from the onset scoring knockdowns in rounds two and three before a beautiful one,two combo dropped Ratliff for a full ten count. Also in action was Lee Roy Murphy (20-1-1-18) who scored a eight round unanimous decision over Wilbert Johnson (18-3-3-8). Scores were 77-74 across the board. Only bright spot for Johnson was a third round knockdown of Murphy for a seven count. Bernard Benton (17-2-0-6) scored an incredible one punch knockout over Hector Ruben Zamora (11-5-5-1) in the fifth round of a scheduled eight rounder. New comers Orlin Norris (2-0-0-1) and Johnny Nelson (2-0-0-0) scored four round unanimous decision victories over a couple of TC's. Norris scored scored a second round knockdown en route to the victory.

Eklund Captures EBU Heavyweight Championship In 9

Hamburg Germany was the site of a fantastic bout that took place for the EBU Heavyweight Championship between Anders Eklund (20-1-1-12) and Bernd August (16-3-0-15). Eklund a 5-1 favorite had his hands full in the scheduled twelve rounder. Eklund won the first round as he was using a sharp jab and crisp counters. Early in the second an Eklund uppercut dropped August for an eight count. It appeared this fight was gonna be a blow out but August battled back in the third and was finally starting to land some big punches on the chin of Eklund. In the fourth August work pays off as Eklund's right eye begins to swell and a cut is opened above the left eye of Eklund. August continues his dominance in the fifth as a solid combo drops Eklund for a six count. August tries to end it but Eklund shows great recuperative powers and is actually firing back come the end of the round. August won rounds six and seven and seemed in complete control. Going into the eighth his corner wanted him to go for the ko and midway thru the round a wicked hook dropped Eklund for a second time this time for a three count. Again Eklund ws able to survive the round. In the ninth again the corner emplored August to get Eklund out of there. This proved to be a big mistake as August ducked right into an Eklund uppercut that landed on the temple and dropped August for a ten count.

In the co-feature we had #8 ranked Al Lewis (21-0-1-10) taking on #11 ranked David Bey (24-3-0-21) who was riding a 21 bout win streak. Bey's troubles began early in the first when a Lewis hook opened a nasty gash above his right eye that casued the doc to examine it right away. The bout continued and Bey and Lewis traded bombs over the next two rounds with a definate edge going to Bey. Joe Souza did an incredible job on the eye of Bey as it remained closed thru the second and third round. Bey was having a big fourth round when a Lewis jab reopened the cut and caused referee Tony Weeks to call time and this time the ringside physician called a halt to the bout. Really was a shame a cut stopped this one as the fight was shaping up to be a real barn burner. These two may do it again to get a real clear cut winner.

Next we had James Broad (14-1-0-6) rebounding from a ninth round tko loss back in February to Reggie Gross. win an impressive eight round unanimous decision over Kevin Isaac (12-4-2-2). Scoring knockdowns in the sixth and eighth rounds. We also saw Mitch"Blood"Green (14-4-1-5) win a onesided eight round unanimous decision over Italy's Giovanni DeLuca (19-5-2-3). Scores were 79-73 twice and 77-73. Also appearing was young Oscar Bonavena (2-0-0-2) who scored an impressive one punch knockout int the fourth round over TC Esteban Ayala (0-5-0-0). And finally Italian newcomer Dante Cane (2-0-0-1) won a four round majority decision over TCConnor Brown (0-6-1-0).

Fight Of The Month

Betulio Gonzalez (16-0-1-9) VS Antonio Avelar (17-0-2-14)

Both pre-prime sluggers Betulio Gonzalez (16-0-1-9) and Antonio Avelar (17-0-2-14) entered the ring with one thing in mind, to capture the SABC Flyweight Championship. And what a show these two put on. From the opening bell you knew you were gonna be treated to an all out war. In the first both men came out looking for the kayo and defense went out the window as both men scored with damaging blows. Late in the second Gonzalez landed a hook uppercut combo that dropped Avelar for a 3 count. Both men continued to slug it out over the next four rounds with Avelar seeming to get the better of it. As the seventh round began both men looked tired and at 1:34 a Gonzalez hook shook Avelar badly. Avelar managed to stay away and clinch to survive the round. In the ninth Avelar's corner felt he was behind and sent him out for the kill and at 1:58 a sizzling hook dropped Gonzalez, Gonzalez struggled to get to his feet by eight. Gonzalez got on his bicycle and managed to avoid further trouble. Both men came out in the tenth looking to end it and again both men stood and traded heavy shots with Avelar again getting the better of it. When the eleventh round started it was now Gonzalez' corner who felt he was behind and implored him to go after Avelar and go after him he did. at :40 a Gonzalez hook dropped Avelar for a 4 count Avelar was given the mandatory eight count. Gonzalez went right after Avelar and landed a hook to the body that reverbirated thru the arena and Avelar slumped to his knees. Avelar didn't look like he would beat the count but he was able to rise at eight. With over a minute to go in the round I was sure Gonzalez was gonna close the show but Avelar showed resiliancy and managed to remain upright. In the final round this fight was up for grabs and both men went for it. As both men stood and traded an Avelar hook buckled Gonzalez' legs badly, Gonzalez was forced to grab to remain on his feet. Avelar follwed up and landed two more brutal shots but Gonzalez was able to withstand it. Both men hugged exhausted as the final bell sounded. The scores were 114-110 for Gonzalez, 112-112 and 113-112 for Avelar. I don't think anyone was upset by the decision a truely great bout. And we can look forward to these two doing it again in a few months.

Fighter Of The Month

Crisanto Espana

(18-0-0-16)

Espana earns the nod with his huge upset vicory over highly favored Pipino Cuevas. Not only was it an upset but Espana completely dominated Cuevas to capture the SABC Welterweight Championship with an eighth round stoppage.

Crisanto Espana held the WBA Welterweight Championship that he won with an eighth round TKO of Meldrick Taylor. He defended the title twice before being stopped by Ike Quartey in 11 rounds, which was the only loss of his career. He retried with a record of 31-1-0-25.

This is a great uni Ric!

Good to see Eklund doing so well. Still, I think that this is as far as he gets. Can't see him beat many of the fighters ranked above him.

Santos Stops Kim in 10

Going into Saturday Nights WBC Title bout Macario Santos (14-2-0-5) was riding an eight bout win streak including two victories this year one over Titing Dignos (14-1-1-2) and Hector Luis Patri (12-2-0-2) who was heavily favored to beat Santos so no one was surprised that the bout versus WBC Titlist Bong-Jun Kim (15-1-0-4) was going off at even odds. Kim was looking to make the first defense of the title he won back in February with a fifth round DQ win over Nick Dalisay. Things started well for Kim when the first punch of the fight a jab opened a cut above the left eye of Santos. Kim easily won rounds one and two as he seemed the quicker of the two and was using a stiff jab. Santos started to get to Kim in the third as he landed some big combos. Kim was back in control in the fourth when a ripping uppercut dropped Santos for an eight count. Kim not known as a big finisher did not attempt to close the show. Santos won a very slow fifth round as both men seemed to coast. Kim won the sixth as he again was tattooing Santos with solid rights and lefts and reopened the cut over his left eye. After six I had Kim aheaf by three points. It all seemed to fall apart for Kim after that. Santos came out in the seventh and landed a wicked left hook that opened a severe gash over the right eye of Kim that would bleed for the remainder of the fight as Kim's corner was never able to get the bleeding under control. The blood appeard to bother Kim as he didn't see the left hook coming that dropped him for an eight count. Santos picked up where he left off in the seventh and drove Kim to the canvas twice in the eighth once for a seven count the other five. So in two rounds there was a five point swing on the judges card. Santos now in control let off the gas in the ninth and paid for it as Kim was not done yet and he landed some hellacious shots to the jaw of Santos. Santos was not gonna let the previous round repeat itself as the bell to start the tenth rang Santos charged across the ring and landed a right hook that dropped Kim for the fourth time in the fight. Kim rose at eight and got on his bicyce but could not escape Santos' power a few seconds later Kim was dropped a second time in the round this time for a five count. As Kim was staying away it seemed like he had his legs back under him but a sizzling cross dropped Kim a third time this time for the full 10 count. Santos has had one hell of a year

In the co-feature we had Kyung-Yum Lee (17-1-0-7) looking to defend his APBC Strawweight Championship against Nick Dalisay (14-2-0-0) who was coming off a WBC title losing effort when he was DQ in five back in February. This was also a title eliminator to see who would face the winner of the main event. Dalisay had a good opening round using speed to beat Lee to the punch. This would be the only round Dalisay would win as Lee took control in the second round and never relinquished it. Lee methodically broke Dalisay down with a combination of speed and power. Dalisay's right eye began swelling in the fourth and by the time of the stoppage had balloned in size. As the tenth round opened Dalisay knew he needed to turn things around and with the swelling he never saw the jab right hook combo that put him to sleep. Lee looked very impressive and not only did he defend his APBC title he will know meet Macario Santos in August for the WBC Strawweight Championship.

Also on the card two new comers Sung-Woo Lee (2-0-1-0) and Chiba Tenoria (3-0-0-0) won four round unanimous decisions over TC's. Both men scored second round knockdowns of their opponent's but could not finish the show.

Gushiken Captures WBA Title

Yoko Gushiken (22-0-0-18) entered the Tokyo Dome as a 2-1 favorite over Vincenzo Belcastro (20-1-1-1) in a battle for the vacant WBA Jr Flyweight Championship. It was evident very early on that Belcastro was gonna have problems with Gushikens aggressive style. Belcastro tried to fight from the outside but was unable to keep the powerful Gushiken off of him. Gushiken started quickly and was able to get to Belcastro many times in the first rattling Belcastro on a number of occasions. As the first round closed Belcastro was already showing signs of swelling under the right eye.. Thru the first six rounds Gushiken was landing some hellacious blows and Belcastro was firing right back. Early in the seventh a Gushiken uppercut dropped Belcastro for an eight count. Belcastro managed to stay out of harms way as Gushiken tried to close the show. Belcastros cutman Stitch Duran is to be commended as Belcastro's right eye was closed at the end of the ninth round but Duran kept Belcastro in the fight. Both men went into the eleventh round looking to end it and at 2:10 it looked like it would happen as a Gushiken hook stunned Belcastro badly. The effects carried over to the twelfth round when another Gushiken hook dropped Belcastro for the second time of the evening this time for a seven count. Belcastro gamely made it thru the round. In the thirteenth a Belcastro hook wobbled Gushiken who had to hang oin to survive the frame. The final two rounds were all Gushiken who scored another knockdown in the fifteenth and final round for a two count. Belcastro showed great heart but it just wasn't enough to overcome the impressive Gushiken who won the bout on all three scorecards 147-134, and 148-133 twice. This division seems to be pretty competitive at this point as there are a number of challengers in the ranks that will make this division very interesting for a long time to come.

In the Co-Feature we had Myung-Woo Yuh (18-0-0-4) facing German Torres (15-1-0-8) for the vacant WBC Jr Flyweight Championship. Yuh earned the chance by defeating Netrnoi Sor Varasingh for the APBC Jr Flyweiight Championship back in February. Torres was coming in with a 10 round majority decision victory over Tadashi Tomori. The bout opened slowly as both men were content to feel eachother out. Early in the second a Yuh jab opened a nasty cut over the right eye of Torres which would cause major problems as the fight progressed. In the third Yuh exploded a right hook off the jaw of Torres who would drop for a count of four. At this point the blood was flowing once again from the cut over the eye of Torres. The ringside physician would examine it and allow the bout to continue. Torres seemed to be getting back into the fight as he won the fourth and was clearly winning the fifth until a Yuh hook started the blood flowing again and this time the physician deemed the cut to serious to continue. It seemed like this one was just starting to heart up when the bout was stopped.

We also saw American Joey Olivo (13-4-3-2) who looked badly out of shape win an eight round split decision over South Korean Sun-Jun Kim (9-3-1-1). Olivo entered the fight on a seven bout win streak , while Kim was seeing action for the third time this year. Kim stopped Jose Badilla (who was also featured on this fight card) in nine and a 10 round draw versus Little Baquio. It was a very competitive fight as both men would flurry and land some great shots. I had Olivo up 3-2 after five and even going into the last round. Olivo had a great last round and edged the fight on my score card. Scores were 78-76 Olivo, 79-73 Kim (What????) and 77-76 for Olivo. Olivo continues his win streak but should prepare better for a featured fight card. Next we say Jose Badilla (10-5-1-2) just be outworked and out gunned by Carlos Reyes Sosa (16-5-0-4) over eight rounds to win a one sided unanimous decision. Scores were 80-73 and 79-74 twice. We also watched two youngsters. Ignacio Lindor Gorriti (0-2-1-0) still looking for his first pro win fight to a draw and Hiroki Ioka (3-0-0-0) win a four round split decision over TC's
