The Boston Red Caps released P Joe Peters (31-4.9) today. The most feared left-hander of the past 5 seasons, Peters has a career record of 155-89 (.635). He tore his triceps muscle right before the season started and missed 3 months. Since coming back, he is 2-4 with a 4.98 ERA. In his last start, he gave up 13 runs, walking 7 batters and striking out 2. He still seems to throw as hard as ever, but the pitches are straight now when they used to have a lot of movement and they don't appear to go where he intended. Louisville Bourbons (54-54 .500 14.5 GB in 4th place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (68-39 .636 1st Place) William McLeod, Lou. (28-5.6) (R 26-16 3.98 9.2-4.0-3.7 H-BB-K/9) vs. Dave Frazier, Det. (27-5.7) (L 12-5 2.24 8.1-2.3-2.8). We are 3-2 against our old teammate this season. Won - 6 to 1 Frazier allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. McLeod gave us 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. We made no errors and Louisville made 3. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) hit his 12th home of the season, a 3 run blast in the 1st inning. He also drew a walk. 2B Al Shaffer (27-5.6) had 2 hits and stole a base. CF Tom Duncan (22-6.6) had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. He is hitting .333 in September. C Tom Trever (25-4.7) had 3 hits for the 2nd straight game, stole a base and scored a run. He has 13 hits in his last 5 games. For the Bourbons, there are no home runs to report, for a change. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (2) at Cleveland (3): Artie Boucher (24-6.1) (10-14) over Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (20-24). Boucher allowed 6 hits, 4 walks and struck out 3. Mathews allowed 12 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. SS Jesse Flanders (27-5.4) had 4 hits and scored a run. Boston (4) at New York (10): Tom McDowell (23-8.0) (7-10) over Will Vertner (24-6.9) (1-1). McDowell allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. Vertner is the man who took Joe Peters spot on the roster. He walked 7 and struck out 1. Indianapolis (10) at Cincinnati (11): Charlie Branham (27-4.2) (29-24) over Jimmy Euler (26-5.5) (14-17). 1B Willie Burton (32-8.5) tripled to lead off the bottom of the 9th and Branham singled him home with 2 outs to win the game. At bat, Branham had 3 hits and a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. C John Whelan (26-4.6) hit his 6th home run of the season. Grand National Association: Baltimore (5) at Providence (6) in 10 innings: Egyptian Hooker (39-3.9) (2-4) in relief of Tom Ashton (23-5.2) over Ike Chase (27-6.2) (1-5). Providence scored twice in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game and 3B Bill Loschiavo (29-5.8) tripled and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th on a passed ball. Chase did not pitch so well, but at bat, he had 4 hits with a triple and scored a run. Last edited by Questdog; 09-14-2015 at 05:48 PM. |

Louisville Bourbons (54-55 .495 15.5 GB in 4th place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (69-39 .639 1st Place) Gene Rankins, Lou. (30-5.4) (R 0-1 13.50 11.3-11.3-0.0 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (L 33-12 2.66 8.9-1.4-3.7). Rankins was 11-13 with a 3.37 ERA in A Ball this season. Won - 10 to 0 Townley with his league-leading 4th shutout of the season. Townley allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Rankins gave us 12 hits, 4 walks and struck out 1. Pittsburgh (4) at Cleveland (1): Tom Adams (33-6.0) (9-8) over Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (22-32). Adams had to leave after 7 innings with a strained achilles tendon and will miss 2 weeks. He allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Bill Henrichs (28-7.4) pitched 2 hitless innings to preserve the win. 2B Jumbo Lynn (27-3.8) will also take a 2-week vacation with an aggravated hamstring. That's 5 injuries in the last 3 games for the Puddlers. Pedersen allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. Grand National Association: Baltimore (6) at Brooklyn (8): Ren French (26-4.9) (23-23) over Bill McGee (29-7.9) (5-9). RF Tom Campbell (29-3.6) sprained his ankle and will miss about 3 weeks. Manager/1B Pete Bucolo (39-4.1) and his Red Caps are in town for a 3 game series to begin today. We are 9-6 against them on the season and beat the 2 out of 3 games in Boston to begin this month. They are 2nd in the League in runs scored with 6.7 per game (Detroit is 4th with 6.2). They are 3rd in runs allowed with 6.3 per game (Detroit is #1 with 4.7). Boston Red Caps (57-49 .538 11.5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (70-39 .642 1st Place) Dave Wolf, Bos. (24-4.7) (R 20-7 3.02 9.6-1.7-3.0 H-BB-K/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (22-7.6) (R 11-10 3.22 9.7-1.5-3.4). We are 0-3 against Wolf so far, but hit him well the last two times we faced him. Won - 1 to 0 Only the 2nd time we have ever shut out the Red Caps in my 3 seasons in Detroit. William McLeod did it on 3 hits back in July of '85. And with the way teams are scoring this year, this one is more special. What a way for Rice to get the 1st one of his (hopefully) illustrious career. I feared for the shutout every time LF Charlie Warner (33-9.2) came to the plate.... Rice allowed 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit and a walk. Wolf gave us 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. Each team made 1 error. RF Fred Bianco (28-6.9) hit a double. 1B George House (28-4.3) had 2 hits and scored our run. Liberty League: Louisville (15) at Cleveland (4): William McLeod (28-5.6) (27-17) over Artie Boucher (24-6.1) (10-15). McLeod allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. He has really had a remarkable season, especially when you consider that he is playing for an expansion team. CF Pat Womack (26-6.3) had 3 hits with a triple, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBIs. 1B Sam Clark (37-4.7), on his birthday, had 2 hits and 2 walks, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBIs. Rookie 3B Dave Odekirk (23-6.5) had 4 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. Indianapolis (4) at New York (6): Miah Turner (26-5.3) (26-14) over Jimmy Euler (26-5.5) (14-18). Turner allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. Euler is now 4-10 in his last 15 starts, though his ERA has remained steady, just under 3.00. Rookie CF Fred James (23-5.3) hit his 5th home run of the season. If 1887 is the Year of the Rookie, 1888 is going to be the Year of the Sophomore Slump when the magnates make their rules changed to get rid of all this scoring. Pittsburgh (6) at Cincinnati (4): Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (21-24) over John Stevens (30-8.2) (26-20). Mathews allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Grand National Association: Omaha (3) at Providence (7): Tom Ashton (23-5.2) (11-8) over Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (25-29). Ashton allowed 5 hits, 7 walks and struck out 1. Brooklyn (12) at Baltimore (7): William David (24-3.6) (13-9) over Ike Chase (27-6.2) (1-6). Milwaukee (6) at Chicago (2): Wild Bill Perrell (23-7.3) (3-2) over Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (33-25). Perrell allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. Seguin's collapse has been historic. He is now 1-9 in his last 10 starts and not one of them (including the win) has been a decent outing. LF Ted Steeves (25-4.2) ended his season with a pulled muscle. |

Boston Red Caps (57-50 .533 12.5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (71-39 .645 1st Place) William Little, Bos. (27-6.0) (R 23-20 3.73 9.6-2.7-3.7 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 34-12 2.60 8.8-1.4-3.7). We are 5-0 against Little this year. The wind is blowing out to right, so the odds of Charlie Warner (33-9.2) not hitting a home run are about nil and thus the odds of us having our 3rd straight shutout our also about nil. Lost - 13 to 6 Warner was 0 for 6, so that is some consolation. Not much, but some. In 6 innings, Townley allowed 11 runs (6 earned), 11 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he hit a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) came in again for emergency relief work and did better than Townley, but not very well. In 3 innings, he gave up 2 runs, 3 hits and 3 walks. He did not strike out anyone. Little gave us 9 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. We made 5 errors and Boston made 1. 1B Jocko Cole (26-5.1) hit a double and a triple, drew a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) hit a double and scored a run. SS Tom Nelson (21-6.6) had 2 hits, stole a base and scored a run. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) had a hit, stole a base and had 2 RBIs. For the Red Caps, RF Dan Abrams (29-5.1), who has owned Townley in their meetings, had 3 hits with a double and a triple and scored 3 runs. C Frank Douglas (32-5.8) hit a double and his 4th home run of the season, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. Rookie CF Sal Griffin (24-5.0) had 3 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. Liberty League: Louisville (7) at Cleveland (5) in 13 innings: John Simon (28-6.6) (5-3) in relief of Sammy Berry (27-5.5) over Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (22-33). Simon pitched 5 shutout innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. Rookie CF Ed Phillips (24-3.5) hit a 2-run single in the top of the 13th to give the Bourbons the lead. Indianapolis (4) at New York (9): Tom McDowell (23-8.0) (8-10) over Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (17-20). McDowell allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. For the Hoosiers, RF Ed Wakefield (27-5.8) hit his 5th home run of the year. Pittsburgh (4) at Cincinnati (20): Charlie Branham (27-4.2) (30-24) over Fred Horner (26-3.8) (5-10). Branham allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. C Cliff Robinson (29-6.1) had a hit and a walk, stole a base, scored 5 runs and had an RBI. 1B Willie Burton (32-8.5) had 3 hits, scored 3 runs and had 4 RBIs. Rookie RF Dad Lee (25-5.9) hit his 3rd home run of the season. For the Puddlers, SS Jim Ware (33-5.6) will miss the rest of the season with a broken wrist. Grand National Association: Brooklyn (10) at Baltimore (5): Ren French (26-4.9) (24-23) over Bill McGee (29-7.9) (5-10). French had to leave in the 9th inning with a swollen shoulder and will miss the rest of the season. 548 paying fans showed up for this game. Providence (8) at Omaha (4): Ed Hodges (27-3.2) (15-29) over Tom Lee (29-6.0) (22-18). Hodges allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. He is 5-2 in his last 9 starts. Milwaukee (5) at Chicago (4): Freddy Wood (31-6.3) (24-24) over Pete Rinehart (28-6.2) (16-23). Wood allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. Rookie 2B Pat Dunbar (25-8.3), playing on a tender ankle, had 4 hits and a walk, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Last edited by Questdog; 09-15-2015 at 10:40 AM. |

Boston Red Caps (58-50 .537 11.5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (71-40 .640 1st Place) Dave Wolf, Bos. (25-4.7) (R 20-8 2.92 9.5-1.7-3.0 H-BB-K/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (22-7.6) (R 12-10 3.08 9.4-1.5-3.5). Lost - 11 to 5 The game was tied at 3 going into the 9th inning and then all heck broke loose.... Rice retired the 1st 2 batters of the 9th and then walked the bases loaded and then 2B Al Shaffer (27-5.6) made an error and then general chaos reigned supreme, capped by a bases-loaded home run by rookie CF Tom Thornton (24-6.4). It was Thornton's 2nd home run of the season in only his 6th start. Rice allowed 11 hits, 5 walks (4 in the 9th inning) and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. Wolf gave us 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. At bat, he had 2 hits and scored a run. We made 7 errors and Boston made 2. 1B Jocko Cole (26-5.1) hit an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the 8th that I thought was a big hit at the time as it tied the game up at 3 apiece. He now has 4 home runs on the season. He also made 2 of our errors. 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) did absolutely nothing on offense and made 2 of our errors. SS Tom Nelson (21-6.6) hit a double and also made 2 of our errors. 2B Al Shaffer (27-5.6) hit a double and scored a run and made the other error. LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) had 2 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. CF Tom Duncan (22-6.6) hit a double and had an RBI. For the Red Caps, RF Dan Abrams (29-5.1) hit a triple and his 6th home run of the season, drew a walk, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. Liberty League: Indianapolis (0) at New York (10): Miah Turner (26-5.3) (27-14) over Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (17-21). Turner allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 7. Rookie CF Fred James (23-5.3) hit 2 double and a triple, drew a walk, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. Pittsburgh (5) at Cincinnati (9): John Stevens (30-8.2) (27-20) over Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (21-25). Stevens allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 3. For the Puddlers, rookie 2B Ed Hewitt (24-5.6) hit his 2nd home run of the year. Grand National Association: Omaha (10) at Baltimore (4): Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (26-29) over Ed Price (23-5.7) (2-6). Sprague allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Omaha made 10 errors. Kansas City (10) at Milwaukee (7): Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (35-19) over Wild Bill Perrell (23-7.3) (3-3). Hodges allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. He is 5-2 in his last 9 starts. St. Louis (1) at Chicago (17): Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (34-25) over Ted Ryther (33-4.3) (28-22). Seguin finally had a good outing: he allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. SS Bob Robertson (25-4.1) hit a double and a triple, drew a walk, stole a base, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBIs. C George Sandefur (31-5.8) had 4 hits with 2 triples, scored 5 runs and had 2 RBIs. Rookie 1B Tom Jackson (23-5.8) had a hit and a walk, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. |

Manager Jesse Courtney (38-5.1) has his Puddlers in town to begin a 4 game series with a double-header today. We are 9-5 against them on the season, but they beat is 3 of 4 in Pittsburgh a month ago. All 3 of our losses in that series were by 1 run. They are 7th in the League in scoring with 5.9 per game (Detroit is 4th with 6.1). They are 2nd in runs allowed with 6.0 per game, but that number is rising since their #1 pitcher, Tom Lilly (27-6.4), was hurt for the season (Detroit is #1 with a pretty amazing 4.8). Pittsburgh Puddlers (49-60 .450 20.5 GB in 6th place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (71-41 .634 1st Place) Game 1 Fred Horner, Pitt. We are back home for the last week of the season and manager/LF Silver Borresen (33-6.9) and his Reds are in town for our final showdown. We are 6 games ahead of them, so they pretty much have to sweep us in this 4 game set to have a chance to overtake us. Of course, if the lowly Spiders can sweep us then the Reds certainly have a chance. We are 8-6 against them on the year, but they beat us 2 of 3 in the Queen City 3 weeks ago the last time we met. They lead the League in runs scored with 7.7 per game, almost a full run ahead of 2nd best Boston (6.8) (Detroit is 5th with 6.1). They are 7th in runs allowed with 6.8 per game (Detroit is 1st with 4.9, over a full run better than 2nd best Pittsburgh (6.0)). Of course they have a power-hitting lineup and we have a park that is very kind to power-hitting lineups, though they have yet to hit a home run in the 5 games we have played against each other in Detroit. That would mean they are due..... Cincinnati Reds (65-48 .575 6 GB in 2nd place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (74-45 .622 in 1st Place) John Stevens, Cin. (30-8.2) (R 28-20 4.03 10.6-2.4-2.7 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 35-15 2.72 9.0-1.4-3.7). We are 3-3 against Stevens so far this year. Won - 6 to 5 Townley allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. Stevens gave us 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. We made 3 errors and Cincinnati made 2. RF Fred Bianco (28-6.9) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. He will start the rest of the season and possibly in the Championship Series. The two youngsters, LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) and CF Tom Duncan (22-6.6), are not hitting. 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. 1B George House (28-4.3) had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. 2B Al Shaffer (27-5.6) hit a double, scored a run and had an RBI. For the Reds, rookie LF Ed Kent (23-3.6) had 2 hits with an inside-the-park home run, his 4th round-tripper of the year and 2nd inside-the-park home run against us. RF Fleet Wilcox (30-4.9) only had 1 hit, but it flew way over the left field fence for his 14th home run of the season. He also drew a walk, got beaned (before he hit the home run), stole 3 bases and scored 4 runs. 1B Willie Burton (32-8.5), who is leading the League in batting, had 2 hits with a double and 2 RBIs. Liberty League: Cleveland (2) at New York (12): Tom McDowell (23-8.0) (10-10) over Artie Boucher (24-6.1) (13-16). McDowell had to leave after 6 innings with a strained calf muscle, but should be okay in a day or two. He allowed 1 run on 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. C Jim Martin (26-5.0) had 5 hits and scored 3 runs. 3B Ed Glass (28-4.5) hit 2 doubles, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs. C Wiley Fobes (36-2.5) won the game with a bases-loaded 2-out walk in the bottom of the 9th. For the Red Caps, LF Charlie Warner (33-9.2) had 4 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Grand National Association: Providence (11) at Baltimore (4) Game 1: Ed Hodges (27-3.2) (17-30) over Ike Chase (27-6.2) (1-9). Hodges allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. For the Orioles, C Caleb Sawyer (28-8.9) hit a home run. Providence (6) at Baltimore (7) Game 2: Ike Chase (27-6.2) (2-9) over Tom Ashton (23-5.2) (12-11). The O's won the game in the bottom of the 9th on a passed ball. Rookie 2B Kitty Covington (23-5.4) scored the run, the 130th run he has scored this year. No one has ever scored more in a season, but SS Bob Robertson (25-4.1) of the Chicago Colts has also scored 130 runs. C Fred Clapp (28-4.0) hit his 3rd home run of the season and rookie CF Jimmy Sleeman (24-3.3) hit his 4th. Milwaukee (12) at Kansas City (13): Lew Burnett (27-4.5) (33-26) over Wiley Steel (25-5.6) (10-17) in relief of Wild Bill Perrell (24-7.3). The Brewers scored 3 times in the top of the 9th to tie the game, but the Cowboys scored in the bottom half to win. The wining run scored on a long fly out. C Pop Buck (33-5.2) hit his 3rd home run of the year. St. Louis (9) at Chicago (8): Con Arnold (23-6.3) (10-11) over Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (37-26). Cincinnati Reds (65-49 .570 7 GB in 2nd place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (75-45 .625 in 1st Place) We play a double-header today to make up for an earlier rain-out. Game 1 John Stevens, Cin. (30-8.2) (R 28-21 4.06 10.6-2.4-2.7 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 36-15 2.75 9.0-1.3-3.7) There is a stiff 20 MPH wind blowing out to center today.... Lost - 5 to 4 1B Jocko Cole (26-6.1) hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game up, but RF Fleet Wilcox (30-4.9) hit his 15th home run of the season in the top of the 9th to give the Reds the lead. Townley allowed 12 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. Stevens gave us 5 hits, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits. Each team made 4 errors. Cole had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. (22-7.6) (R 14-12 3.23 9.5-1.6-3.3) In the break between games, the wind has reversed itself and is now blowing in, but not quite as hard as it was blowing out earlier. Evan Eckberg (31-3.5), who was a good catcher for the Wolverines for 5 seasons, but has suddenly gotten very old, will catch his last game for Detroit today. He will not be returning next year (unless I do not return). Won - 6 to 5 We scored all of our runs in the first 5 innings and we were up 6 to 2 before the Reds put 3 runs on the board in the top of the 9th inning and had the tying run at 3rd with only 1 out. But Rice knuckled down and got 2 ground outs to end the game. Rice allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. Burton gave us 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. Each team made 2 errors. LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) had 2 hits with a double and a walk, stole a base and scored 2 runs. 1B Jocko Cole hit a double, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Tom Duncan (22-6.6) had 2 hits with a double and an RBI. Evan Eckberg went 0 for 4 and had an error and allowed a passed ball, but did throw a runner out in 4 tries. For the Reds, 1B Willie Burton hit his 34th double of the season, tying the Liberty League record set by Ed Glass of the Gothams in 1885. Glass had a 100 more ABs than Burton does, though. Rookie Jocko Breton (24-4.5) has 35 for the Orioles in the Grand National Association this year for the all-time major league mark. SS Ed Sawyer (27-4.7) hit a triple and his 2nd home run of the year, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. !!With this win, we have clinched another Liberty League championship, our 3rd in a row!!
