Lonnie Smith
351397 - Lonnie Smith
Retired Lonnie Smith is in the database, but saw the current Lonnie Smith on TV against Rodela. Man he looked super tough. Anyone else seen him fight? All action. Would love to see him rated. |

sorry
I'm not doing any requests until I'm done with my own primary list. I'm on the S's now and, because I'm often sick, the going is very slow.

Randy Sandy
Is Randy Sandy (MW 1951-1964) a re-rating of the game version?

Well here is my try at making a boxer file. It's Lonnie Smith, who conflicts with the retired Lonnie Smith. I just put an extension at the end of his name so it can be added. Please let me know opinions, good and bad.

Thanks for posting your fighter. The rating looks ok to me. When I uploaded I removed your extension and used his full name as give in box rec. Lonnie Michael M. Smith distinguished the file from Lonnie Smith. Usually any little change in the file name will do the trick. Home town and weight class are often used. Nicknames. Parenthetical comments associated with either the first name or the surname will also distinguish files.

Randy Sandy
No, I did not mean to rerate Randy Sandy. I overlooked him when I perused the data base to see if he had been rated or not before. Ignore my rating.

Thanks Bear, and John. If you guys see mistakes, or better ways to do it please let me know. I would love to get this right. There's a bunch more I really want to do. I know John mentioned in a previous post that he does not like to rate a boxer without seeing him first. I completely agree! Thank god for YouTube

Somethings never change no matter how long we've been rating fighters. We always want to get them right and there are always zillions of lists and projects. We are always still learning. I don't like rating active fighters and shy away from them. John likes rating them. I really look forward to his ESPN fighter ratings after the Friday night fisticuffs. He helps me get a handle on how to rate active fighters and my comfort level with them has risen as a result of John's work. I was a member of the forums for about two years before I posted my first rating. It was for a fighter named Sam Shumway. I'm glad to see you weren't as gun shy. Shumway was an enigma to me. I discovered him in Ring Record Books from 1945 & 1946. His record was a litany of KO loses. Boxrec had a more complete listing of bouts and apparent ineptitude but he had several wins over ranked New England fighters. One of them was Tiger Ted Lowery. Ring magazine from the early 40s reported him the to be the headline attraction when a new arena in Webster, MA opened. I discussed him with a fellow boxing historian, Mike Silver. Mike knew Tiger Ted and talked to him about Shumway. Ted shared his recollections of Shumway with Mike, who then discussed Shumway with me. Shumway was a crowd pleasing, aggressive, all out fighter. Play tested him against all of his opponents that I had in my database hours on end. Still don't now if I got it right, but I posted a file I thought to be in the ball park. Haven't stopped posting since.
