MY LIFE IN 1961
EC's Havin' Fun In '61 Working at the Bay Gas Station... nope, not a service station... a gas station... we don't do any repairs or oil changes... we just pump a lot of gas, clean a lot of windshields and check the oil and tires, too... this station was #2 in New Orleans for the most gallons pumped each month... yep, this was the good old days when gas was just 20 cents a gallon... a lot of our customers just said, "Dolla's worth, please". Life is good for me... it's great to be back home and out of the US Air Force... enjoying the wonderful New Orleans food... also catching up on all the movies that are available... New Orleans must have have 50 theatres... every part of the city had its own neighborhood theatre... I used to go to the Pitt, Fox and Gentilly most of the time in my neighborhood, which was New Orleans East... also liked the Skyvue Drive in, too... downtown we have the first-run theatres like the beautiful Saenger... also the Joy (it had swivel and rocking chairs - I guess they were more comforable). Loew's State and RKO Orpheum... second-run theatres downtown were the Globe and Tudor. It won't be long... will begin college at LSUNO in September, just 3 months away... that's short for Louisiana University in New Orleans... now the University of New Orleans... we no longer have the New Orleans Pelicans baseball team and Pelican Stadium... no longer have my all-time favorite team, my beloved Mobile Bears... the both folded in '59 after about 60 seasons in the Southern Association... so I follow the Tulane Greenies and Loyola Wolfpack in baseball and basketball... Loyola doesn't play football... and, of course, being from Alabama, I still follow the Crimson Tide... also the LSU Tigers, but I've never been a fan... always liked the Green Wave better... still do... LSU and Tulane used to be a huge rivalry, but it went away once Tulane deemphasized sports and dropped out of the Southeastern Conference in the early 60s. Forgot to show you the pick'em up trucks when I posted the new cars for 1961... So here they are for all you buckaroos and little darlin's, too. Thought you might like to see how beautiful the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans was.
The first picture is the outside view in the early 1950s. Once you bought your ticket, you would go inside to the beautiful entrace hallway (the second picture). You entered the theatre through the four doors that took you to the concessions stand.. Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-05-2023 at 10:10 PM. |

This was what the Saenger Theatre looked like inside in the 1950s.
It seated almost 3000 people... you can see part of the balcony in the upper right of the photo. Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-05-2023 at 10:17 PM. |

MY LIFE IN 2023
EC's Life's Filled with Glee in '23 EC just finished "Man on Spikes" by Eliot Asinof... it is very well written and gives you a real sense of what it was like to be a minor league baseball player in the 1940s and 1950s... "Man on Spikes" is a realistic novel about a baseball player who struggles for 16 years of personal crises and professional ordeals before finally appearing in a major league game... your heart will ache for Mike Rutner and his life as a career minor leaguer... the character is based on a real player Mickey Rutner. Reading it was bittersweet for the idealistic EC... the good old golden days of baseball of my youth were really not so good... players had to work in the off-season to support their families... baseball did not pay them a decent salary at that time. Thought you might like to know that Mickey Rutner played for the Birmingham Barons in 1947... EC knows that because I replayed the 1947, 1948 and 1949 seasons of my beloved Southern Association... I used actual players in those years and tried to do an accurate reply... A great guy, Spritzer, shared with me all the Southern Association stats and rosters from 1947 to 1959... he had the entire collection of the Spaulding Baseball Guides, which contained all of the stats of minor league baseball... they were published yearly from the early years of organized baseball... sadly Spritzer passed away 2 or 3 years ago... he was a great member of the OOTP family. EC just started "Veeck As In Wreck" by Bill Veeck and Ed Linn, an accomplished baseball writer... it's the baseball story of the eccentric major league and minor league owner, Bill Veeck, who was a super promoter, who made going to a baseball fun with wacky promotions... sadly and historically, Bill Veeck is remembered as the guy who used a midget for one at bat in a MLB game in 1953 for the St. Louis Browns, which Veeck owned. Read the book and I think you would agree Bill Veeck was a baseball genius and deserved a much better reputation... yep, he went too far on occasion and was a pain for the MLB owners... but Veeck created some good ballclubs... the minor league Milwaukee Brewers in the American Association and the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago White Sox in the American League... Bill wasn't just a wacky promoter, he was a pretty astute baseball man, too. "Wit, Quips and Quotes from the Diamond Minds" Excerpt from "Veeck As In Wreck" by Bill Veeck and Ed Linn: "It's not the high price of stardom that bothers me... it's the high price of mediocrity"... Bill Veeck speaking about the cost of major league players in the early 1950s. In my opinion It is truly outrageous today where we have many mediocre MLB players that are millionaires... players are grossly overpaid today. . Sorry folks for neglecting the Islandian Pro Alliance and the South Island Leagues... EC has been busy, busy with real life... I'm really enjoying life with my hobbies...playing OOTP Baseball, playing music at nursing homes twice a week, collecting music for my music library, listening to my 8500-song library -- and now, getting a one-hour radio program on a Baton Rouge station., yep, Danderoo (old air name) is back on the air... quite a bit rusty and out of shape, but I'm slowly getting back to where I was... however, I must say, EC best days have long passed on the radio... but I can still do a pretty good job... don't think I will embarrass myself.
It is a one-hour program each Sunday at 1 o'clock... you can stream it on the internet at the link provided below... the station doesn't have a live studio, it is almost totally automated, so I have to pre-record the program each week, which is a huge hassle... I have had to learn how to record it in Audacity and process it to send to the stations... as you know, EC is technically-challenged in computer technology... so it has been quite a struggle, but I am finally on the air after 21 years of retirement... I much prefer a live, on-air show... recording it lacks sponteneity... the excitement of being live before an audience is missing... but hey, it is what it is... I hope to get some software which will enable me to record it "Live"... it takes me 10 hours per program to record it... I could do it "live" in an hour... maybe two hours... I'm sure, I would have to tweak to a bit and do some editing. Yep, I love it... EC is in skyhigh Heaven when I am on the radio and also playing at nursing homes... I love playing music for listerners... my strong point is the music... I have always been able to please an audience... my shortcoming is as a DJ... not a good voice... but I always related well with the listeners... not boasting, but I was almost always the most popular DJ at my stations... in the late 70s and early 80s I was the second-most listened to DJ in Baton Rouge at WYNK, the top country station. My program, The Gospel Truth For the Lost and Found, is simulcast on two small stations in Baton Rouge, KPAE and WPAE, at 1 o'clock on Sundays for one hour... I hope to eventually have a 2-hour show on Saturday and Sunday. Here is the link... at the bottom of the screen below Our Mission, click the "Play" Button to start the music. https://soundradio.live/ Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-15-2023 at 12:31 PM. |

Should any of you listen to the radio program, let me know what you think?
Be candid... EC has a thick skin and can take constructive criticism. I would really appreciate the feedback. Don't post here... Send me a Private Message, please. That way it will easier to be candid. And it won't clutter up this thread or cause any controversy. Did it sound professional to you? Were the songs played back smoothly? Was it a good, smooth flowing radio show like your favorite music shows? Rate the DJ talent as far as voice qualtiy and content of the show:.. that is, what I said and how it was delivered. Rate the DJ Talent Level: Small Market, Medium Market ability level... no sense in giving you the Major Market choice... EC was never at that level and never would be. If you like Southern Gospel and Country Gospel music, did you like the songs? If you don't like Southern Gospel and Country Gospel music, did you like it after hearing it? For the non-religious listeners, was the music pleasant to listen to despite the words and message... were the songs melodic? Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-16-2023 at 01:17 PM. |

Saturday, May 27, 1961 SUPREME LEAGUE MIDSEASON RECAP Well, what do we know about the South Island Supreme League after playing half of the schedule?... so far, we have learned there is no one standout team... parity is everywhere... anybody can beat anybody on any given weekend... preseason picks New Yerby and Grin Hill have been disappointing... Jackson and Braxton have been surprising... and Meraux has done better than expected... at midseason it's the Jackson Jackalopes on top of the Supreme League standings... the Jacks are one game ahead of the Meraux Tigers, 2 in front of the Braxton Bruins and 3 games up on the Delta Stars... thus far, New Yerby has been troubled by its very poor season... the winner of the last two Supreme League pennants and the winner of pennants the last three years, the Yankees also won the Secondary League in 1958 and got promoted to the Supreme League... Grin Hill won the Secondary League flag last season... this year both New Yerby and Grin Hill are sitting at the bottom of the Supreme League. Jackson (10-4), picked to finish in the second division, finds themselves in first place... they just win close ballgames and don't impress you very much when they do... the Jackalopes have been outscored 80 to 72 this year... they are near the bottom in ERA... and they are near the bottom in fielding... still they are in first place... Jackson has quality starters in Denny McCain (4-1/3.78 ERA) and Tyler Collins (2-1/3.98 ERA) and a weak bullpen... the offense doesn't impress much, but Mickey Retief, Matt Coleman, Lawrence Chapman and Nate Perkins get the job done... rookie Chris O'Neal has been a fine contributor, too, along with Russ Miller and Harper Lovejoy... the Jackalopes have a good bat at every spot in the lineup... time will tell if they can keep winning the squeakers... last weekend Jackson nipped second place Meraux 6-5 and 1-0 in a crucial doubleheader. The second place Meraux Tigers (9-5) depend on starters Bobby McNew (5-1/3.28 ERA) and Tommy Kitchen (4-2/1.63 ERA)... they give them the best pitching in the Supreme League... the Tigers struggle at the plate... Don Fontenot, Mario Sierra, Aaron Mettler and Alton Ragsdale are their most productive bats... and they have the best defense... look for Meraux to be in for the long haul... they are a bonifide pennant contender. Third place Braxton (8-6) suffers from a weak offense... they depend on starters Emile Delhomme (5-2/3.22 ERA) and Kevin Stokes (3-2/4.14 ERA)... however, the bullpen comes up short... the Bruins also depend on HR power, speed and good defense... Jeff Cook, Roger Sandlin and Scott Bell are the only solid bats in their lineup... star shortstop Chuck Abadie is having a down year so far... Gordon Freeman, Lionel Chauvin and Mike Bryan don't hit for average, but they do drive in runs... Braxton will finish anywhere from third to sixth. Fourth place Delta (7-7) is a bit of a mystery... the Stars are first in scoring and second in ERA, yet they are only at the .500 mark halfway through the season... Delta is led on the mound by standout southpaw Johnny Goodman (5-2/2.61 ERA) and Eric Pahler (2-3/3.40 ERA)... the bullpenners have been dependable, too... the Stars play pretty good defense... and the batting order is chocked full of fine hitters like Lynn Parker and Buzzy Roberts... Jimmy Carter, rookie Milos Kukucka and rookie Mason Mansur all swing a productive bat... methinks, Delta will have a good second half and make things tough for Jackson and Meraux. In the fifth postion in the standings are the Mystic Mariners (6-8)... they were predicted to be a second-division team and that's just where the Sailors are... overall Mystic is just a mediocre club with an average offense and an average staff... rookie Bill Walsh (1-3/2.62 ERA) is the most effective hurler, but he can't seem get many wins... productive bats are few and far between... Jimmy Taylor, Casey Carter and rookie Bobby Cieslak are the best of the lot... splendid fielding first baseman Frank Gullo has been stuck in a batting slump all season long... the Mariners are not a .500 ballclub and will wind up in the second division... Mystic has been on a 4-year losing streak... however, they won the Supreme League flag in 1957... that's not going to happen again anytime soon. Forecast to prosper in the Supreme League after winning the Secondary League crown last year, the Grin Hill Smileys (6-8) have struggled at the plate and on the hill... it's been an up-and-down season, but mostly down... the Smileys are tied for fifth place with Mystic and headed nowhere in the Supreme League... last year's top hurler Jim Smiley has flopped miserably with a 2-3 mark and a horrendous 6.43 ERA... last year in the Secondary League he was 10-2 with a so-so 4.15 ERA... Smiley got great run support last year... only Cliff Lebreton is having a good season for Grin Hill... rookie left-hander Jay Logan (1-3/3.44 ERA) has not been the savior Grin Hill thought he was... and bigger things were also expected from rookie outfielder Lim Smiley (.259 BA/3 RBI/7 R/6 SB)... could be the Smileys are just not as good as we think. Chosen for the bottom of the Supreme League, Zebulon (5-9) is living up to that prediction... the Zips are floundering in last place with last year's league champion New Yerby... pure and simple the pitching in the first half of the season has been just plain bad, although Duck Davis (3-3/3.65 ERA) and Chad Hooker (1-0/1.77 ERA) have done well recently... in spite of leading the Supreme League with a .312 team batting average, the Zips don't score runs like they should... they only have 3 top-notched batters... Lester Lambert, Eddie Rabbitt and Mickey Campbell are depended on to provide all of the offense... that rock-solid trio badly needs some help... yep, it looks like Zebulon is destined for last place this season, down from second place last season (8-6)... how they managed that with their talent is mystifying. The big question around South Island is what has happened to the mighty New Yerby Yankees (5-9), the supreme team in the Supreme League?... in a nutshell, the pitching is downright horrible... the Yanks are scoring runs, but they can't get anybody out... they are absolutely last with a astronomically-high 6.05 ERA... 'nuff said, New Yerby is dead last in the Supreme League... the only decent hurler has been rookie Vito Parnelli (4-1/4.07 ERA)... the rest have been miserable... mainstay Steve Chancellor with a 5-year record of 26-8 and a career 3.26 ERA had been terrible this year with an 0-3 mark and a sky-high 6.83 ERA in 4 starts... Johnny Jordan has also suffered a down year with an 0-2 record and a whopping 7.45 ERA... careeer-wise Jordan was 11-2 in his first two years in the league with a fine ERA near 3.00... also superstars Silas Delaney (.255 BA/1 HR/7 RBI) and Rusty Armstrong (.167 BA/2 HR/5 RBI) have wilted at the plate this year... but the Yanks still have plenty of production from bulwarts Clayton Delaney, Dom DeLuca, James Madison and Kent Clemenceau... with good pitching New Yerby would be as almost as good as ever and right back on top in the Supreme League. |

MY LIFE IN 2023
EC's Life's Filled with Glee in '23 Yeah buddy, EC is really enjoying Bill Veeck's book "Veeck As In Wreck"... I'm about halfway through it... yep, Veeck overdid some promotions, but he was very knowledgeable about baseball, too... he could promote a team like nobody else and he could put together quality teams, too... Bill Veeck did a whole lot more than just use a midget named Eddie Gaedel in an major league game. Baseball history is not fair to Bill Veeck. I love Bill Veeck's honesty about himself... he tells it like it is, even if it puts him in a bad light... I love his generous nature toward his ballplayers and managers in salary negotiations... I love his generosity to the communities where he owned teams... I love his sense of humor and work ethic... Bill Veeck would make the "Hardest Working Man in Show Business", James Brown, the R & B great, look lazy... Bill worked 5 am to 12 midnight on game day, checking the entire ballpark to make sure his fans got their money's worth of entertainment... and he did it on one leg... he lost a leg from a World War II wound... he served 3 years in the war... for the rest of his life Bill suffered chronic pain caused by his prosthetic leg... he had to endure many operations trying to get rid of the pain... he never let his leg slow him down. Here's what Chicago Tribune sportswriter Bob Verdi wrote in the book's foreword: "Bill Veeck had the business of pleasure in perspective. I remember him answering his own phone in an office where the door was never closed because he always removed all doors in his offices whenever he took over a team. He had an open door policy for everyone, ballplayers, sportswriters and fans. And I remember him hobbling around the ballpark, oblivious to all those aches, and I often wondered: who is really handicapped, him or us?" Bill Veeck, not only was a promotional genius, he was also a very astute baseball owner who could put together good baseball teams. "Wit, Quips and Quotes from the Diamond Minds" Excerpts from "Veeck As In Wreck" by Bill Veeck and Ed Linn: "I have done a few other things in baseball, you know, other than the Eddie Gaedel promotion. I've won pennants and finished dead last; I've set attendance records and have been close to bankruptcy. At the age of fifteen, I was taking care of Ladies' Day passes at Wrigley Field. I owned my first ballclub when I was twenty-eight, I have operated five clubs -- three in the major leagues and two in the minors -- and in three of those towns I won pennants and broke attendance records. Two of the three teams to beat the Yankees since I came to the American League in 1946 were my teams, the 1948 Cleveland Indians and the 1959 Chicago White Sox. The only other team, the 1954 Cleveland Indians, was made up for the most part of my old players." (Note: Bill Veeck's father William Veeck, Sr. invented Ladies Day when he ran the Chicago Cubs in the early years of baseball) Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-22-2023 at 11:02 AM. |

Saturday, May 27, 1961 SI SECONDARY LEAGUE MIDSEASON SUMMARY A quick review of the South Island Secondary League shows preseason favorite Cherrywood and number two choice Billings have been the most disappointing teams... Joliet and Pelham are raising some eyebrows with their solid play... the rest of the clubs are performing pretty much as forecast. HO! HO! HO! It's been a jolly good season for the Joliet Green Giants (10-4)... they are standing tall in first place in the Secondary League at midyear with a 2-game margin over the runner-up Pelham Oaks... Joliet has to do it with their bats because the pitching is just about the worst in the league... the Green Giants give up almost as many runs as they score... they have only one weak bat in the lineup... Ralph Varricchio, Teebo Chargois, Ronnie Fleming, Phil Richard and Alphonse Guidry can flat out put runs on the scoreboard... in addition, veteran center fielder Vinny Venezia and rookie Allen Quibedeaux have really perked up the attack, too... Venezia only hit .187 last year... key figures in the second half are pitchers Rufus Turner and rookie Ellis Schexnaydre... if they can do well the rest of the way, Joliet will be in the thick of things in the pennant race and could very well come home with its first league flag. Pelham (8-6) just might be the best team in the Secondary League... they won their first four games this season, then lost four straight with a weak offense... since then Pelham has gone 4-2... the Oaks have good lumber at the plate, right up near the top in scoring runs and they have the best staff by far... John Wright and Corey Wyatt give them two quality starters, but the bullpen is lousy... plus Pelham has the top defense in the league... the offense has been quite productive with the likes of Matt Lucas, rookie Johnny Forsyth, Chad Worthington, Bernie Rivet and Mike Henson... however, run scoring is down the last two or three weekends... not a good sign for Pelham... that needs to change... veteran bats Bill Chapman (.246 BA/3 RBI) and Doug Patterson (.255 BA/6 RBI) have to be better in the second half... the Oaks will never overtake Joliet with a subpar attack. There's a three-way tie for third place... the Parkland Perfectos (7-7) are the best-hitting team in the Secondary League... the starters veteran Denny Lee (2-3/3.65 ERA) and rookie Jeff Veltre (3-2/4.47 ERA) are fair to mediocre, but the bullpen is abominable (8.02 ERA)... defense is average and adequate... John Strauss, Ballhawk Bannen, Bruce Bundy, Mike Jones, Vincent Jeansonne and Aaron Kettering are a bunch of bigtime bats... if rookie hurler Jeff Veltre can regain his early season form, the Perfectos could create some chaos in the race... even more critical, bullpen help is also a dire need. The Littleville Supermen (7-7) are also running third in the Secondary League... lately they have been playing well and are on the upswing... Carlo Fresina (5-1/2.56 ERA) is one of the best starters in the league, but he could use some help from Billy Pate (1-2/3.23 ERA), who has been off-and-on this season... the top part of the batting order has done the job with Billy Daniels, Denny Farmer, Jay Danley, Dusty Brennan and Luke Lexus... it's the bottom third that needs improvement... Littleville is just an average club at the plate and with the gloves... the Superman are playing Joliet and Parkland in the next two weekends... they'll get a good chance to see if they are a contender or not. The Bar Harbor Acadians (7-7) started the season with a bang with 4 straight wins, but they have slipped badly since, going just 3-7 with 6 consecutive defeats... the Cajuns have done well on the hill, but dismally offensively... starters Jesse Dodge (2-3/2.84 ERA) and rookie Cameron Bardot (4-4/3.95 ERA) have been pretty good so far... the offense did alright early in the season, but have faltered badly since... the only productive bats are rookie Jeff Grubin, Mike Allen and Warren Gravois... Bar Harbor appears to be a second-division team... their best part of the year seems to be behind them... the Acadians are not a third-place team. Cherrywood came close to winning the South Island Secondary League last season, finishing a very close second to Grin Hill with a 10-5 mark... the outlook was very favorable this year... the Stouts were the preseason favorite... they started poorly, but have played pretty well recently... Cherrywood (6-8) is now in 6th place... stalwarts Robert Wheeler (.245 BA/8 RBI), George Hayes (.214 BA/9 RBI), Charlie Loomis (.250 BA/5 RBI) and Merlin Haggard (.200 BA/3 RBI) have not performed like they did in past years... Tony Armstrong, Rick Fargnoli and Lester Atkins have had to carry the offensive load... Dave Schulman (3-4/3.09 ERA) has been solid on the hill... the other starter Austin Pride (2-2/4.43 ERA) has had a mediocre rookie year... the bullpen has been lousy... Cherrywood has the talent to turn the season around, but they have a lot of ground to make up to win the pennant... the Stouts are better than 6th place. The St. Dominic Saints (6-8) finished near the bottom last season, were picked to be near the bottom this season and that's exactly where they are halfway through the year... the Saints have trouble scoring, but do have good power... the mound corps hasn't been especially good, nor have they been especially bad... Max Rommel (2-2/3.82 ERA) and Jean-Paul Renoir (2-2/2.73 ERA) have done a decent job as starters... the primary bats have been Norm Manchester, Larry Arbour, Gil LaGrange and rookie Blaise Lapeyrouse... not much help beyond them... St. Dominic is most likely destined to wind up 7th or 8th this season. Like Cherrywood, the Billings Rams (5-9) were forecast to be one of the best teams in the Secondary League, ending up as high as second place... however, the Rams have struggled at the plate and on the hill... in addition they are the worst fielding team in the league... 'nuff said... yep, Billings is in last place at midseason... only Ralph Ziegler and Marshall Chapman are swinging the bats well... the dependable Roger McCullough (.167 BA/6 RBI) has had a very slow start this year... however, there are several bright lights... rookie pitcher/infielder Gaspar Marini (3-3/3.26 ERA) has done both jobs well... he is hitting .286 with 5 RBIs and 8 runs scored... Marini has done well at shortstop and second base in the field... Tony Zuppardo (.476 BA) has taken over at shortstop in recent weeks and has sparkled at the plate and has played well defensively... when he doesn't pitch Marini moved to second base to keep Zuppardo's bat in the lineup... Rusty Roniger (1-2/4.50 ERA) and Clifton Chenier (1-3/5.17 ERA) have not done well as starters... Billings may be stuck in last place... they are the worst team in the Secondary League. |

MY LIFE IN 2023
EC's Life's Filled with Glee in '23 When it comes to baseball promotions in general, EC is not a fan... I'm a traditionalist... my wife (a big fan of going to games) and I actually watch every pitch and keep a very detailed scorebook... she keeps the first half of the game, I do the second half... we actually watch the game, unlike most of the fans today, who go for the entertainment and food... and yep, occasionally we have to use that terrible symbol (WW)... that's our scoring code for "Wasn't Watching"... some promotions are fine, but the Savannah Bananas is too much for this old curmudgeon... and yeah, I know they need to sell tickets and make money and that is hard to do these days with so much entertainment competition. What was the 50th American League Birthday Party Celebration like in St. Louis when midget Eddie Gaedel was used in a real MLB game?... I think I would have enjoyed the in-between games festivities... but would not have like the use of a midget... I love Bill Veeck, but he goes too far on occasion and admits to this shortcoming. "Wit, Quips and Quotes from the Diamond Minds" Let's join the festive festivities and frivolities at Sportsman Park in St. Louis in 1951. Excerpts from "Veeck As In Wreck" by Bill Veeck and Ed Linn: "We went all out in our between-games at the American League's 50th Birthday Party. We had a parade of old-fashioned care circling the field. We had two men and two women, dressed in Gay Ninety costumes, pedaling around the park on a bicycle-built for four. Troubadours roamed through the stands to entertain the customers. Our own band, featuring Satchel Paige on the drums, performed at home plate. Satch, who is good enough to be a professional, stopped the show cold. In our version of a three-ring circus, we had something going on at every base -- a hand-balancing act at first base, a trampoline act on second and a team of jugglers at third. Max Patkin, our rubber-boned clown, pulled a woman out of the grandstand and did a wild jitterbug dance with her on the pitcher's mound. Of course, that should have been enough, but not for Bill Veeck... the highlight of the infamous day would be Eddie Gaedel at the plate... unlike the mighty Casey, little Eddie didn't strike out, he walked on four pitches... Bob Cain was the pitcher... I knew him when I was a clubhouse and ballboy for the Mobile Bears in 1957... Cain's MLB days were over, but he was still playing in the minors for the Bears... he was a real nice guy... he gave me his old glove when he got a new one from Wilson... EC used it for several years... yep, it was a good one. Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-25-2023 at 04:39 PM. |

ALWAYS enjoy your posts. This one was interesting to say the least. i find the Bananas ok to watch in a you tube clip, but a nine inning affair? no way. Thanks for sharing your memories!

Sunday, May 22, 1961 STARS SWEEP JACKS... JACKSON AND MERAUX TIED FOR FIRST IN SUPREME LEAGUE The Delta Stars got back into the thick of things in the Supreme League pennant chase... the Stars defeated the Jackson Jackalopes in both ends of a doubleheader, enabling the Meraux Tigers to tie the Jacks for the top spot... Delta is tied for second place now with the Braxton Bruins, just one game behind the co-leaders. Delta defeated Jackson 5-2 in both games of the twinbill... Meraux split with New Yerby, losing game one 3-1 and winning the nightcap 5-4... Braxton also divided the doubleheader with Grin Hill... the Smileys pounded them in the opener 10-3, but lost the second game 7-1 to the Bruins... in other games, Mystic edged Zebulon in the first game 7-6, but the Zips came back and zapped the Mariners 5-0 in game two. |
