Forsch Shuts Down Pirates; NLCS Headed to Fifth Game
Pittsburgh, Penn.--The Pittsburgh Pirates ran into an immovable Forsch Tuesday night at Three Rivers Stadium.
Houston right-hander Ken Forsch allowed just four hits as the Astros evened the Joy in Mudville National League Championship Series with a 3-0 victory over the Pirates. The Houston win means that Thursday's game at the Astrodome will decide which team represents the NL in the JIM World Series. Pittsburgh will start game two winner Luke Walker. Houston will either start Don Wilson or Larry Dierker. In a series that has featured the potent Pittsburgh offense, Forsch was the star in his game four victory. The Astro right-hander didn't allow a base hit until sixth-inning singles by Bill Buckner and Al Oliver. In the meantime, Houston built a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings off Pirate starter Dock Ellis. Forsch knocked in one of those runs with a sacrifice fly. After Jimmy Wynn singled home an insurance run in the eighth, Pittsburgh finally mounted a threat in the ninth. After striking out the first two batters, Forsch gave up a double to Milt May and walked pinch-hitter Matty Alou. Astro closer Mike Marshall entered the game and struck out former teammate and Pittsburgh pinch-hitter Norm Miller looking to end the game. Orioles Earn Fourth American League Pennant
Baltimore--It was far from the sweeps of the past two seasons, but the Baltimore Orioles roost atop the Joy in Mudville American League for the third straight year.
Baltimore toppled Minnesota 8-2 Thursday in the fifth and deciding game of the ALCS. Thus, the Orioles find themselves in the JIM World Series for the fourth time in their history. Tom Seaver earned ALCS Most Valuable Player honors by pitching seven innings as Baltimore breezed to the victory. Seaver won his second game of the playoffs as the right-hander allowed five hits, walked one and struck out seven. The Orioles made it easy for Seaver. After falling behind 1-0, the Orioles scored unearned three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Catcher Bob Boone doubled home two of those runs. Baltimore added four more runs the very next inning. First baseman Steve Garvey blasted a three-run homer off Minnesota starter Jim Kaat. From that point, Seaver and a trio of relievers held the Twins in check. The Orioles open World Series play at home against either Pittsburgh or Houston. Rookie Left-Hander Hurls Astros into JIM World Series
Houston--Frank Tanana has never pitched a bigger game. Frank Tanana may have never pitched a better game.
The rookie left-hander pitched Houston into the Joy in Mudville World Series as the Astros downed Pittsburgh 8-1 Thursday in the fifth and deciding game of the National League Championship Series. The win sends Houston into the JIM World Series for the second time. The Astros will face Baltimore, the team Houston defeated to win the 1972 JIM championship. Leading 2-0 in the decisive game five, the Astros scored three times in the fifth, twice in the sixth and once more in the seventh to put the game and NL pennant away. Tanana was shaky in September. In fact the 21-year-old rookie made just three starts in the regular season's final month. However, Houston choose the left-hander over veterans Don Wilson and Larry Dierker for the final game. The decision worked out well as Tanana was at the top of his game. He came within two outs of shutting out the dangerous Pittsburgh offense. All-Star Richie Hebner homered for the Pirates' lone run. Houston first baseman Mike Hargrove won the NLCS Most Valuable Player Award. Hargrove, who took over first base when John Mayberry was felled with an injury mid-season, batted .500 against Pittsburgh. He hit three home runs and drove home seven runs. Hargrove also broke a string of three straight years a player with the last name of May won the NL playoff MVP. 1974 JIM World Series: Baltimore vs. Houston
1974 JOY IN MUDVILLE WORLD SERIES: BALTIMORE VS. HOUSTON
Probable Lineups: Baltimore Orioles, AL Champions Billy North, RF Ken Singleton, LF Amos Otis, CF Steve Garvey, 1B Darrell Evans, 3B Johnny Grubb, DH Bobby Grich, 2B Chris Speier, SS Bob Boone, C Houston Astros, NL Champions Joe Morgan, 2B Jimmy Wynn, RF Cesar Cedeno, CF Mike Hargrove, 1B Carlos May, LF Bucky Dent, SS Charlie Moore or Jose Cruz, DH Steve Yeager, C Jerry Royster, 3B Pitching Probables: Game One: Jon Matlack vs. Ken Forsch Game Two: Nolan Ryan vs. Don Wilson Game Three: Tom Seaver vs. Jim Bibby or Frank Tanana Previous World Series Appearances: Baltimore--1970, '72, '73; Houston--1972. Key Injuries: Baltimore--none; Houston--John Mayberry (out); Steve Ontiveros (questionable). Notes of Interest: This year's JIM World Series guarantees the first two-time winner in league history. Baltimore won its championship in 1970; Houston beat the Orioles for the 1972 title . . . This is the fifth consecutive season the American League champion plays its games on grass and the National League representative hosts on artificial turf . . . Baltimore is making its fourth World Series appearance. The Orioles have just one title and carry a 10-10 record in Series play into Saturday's opener . . . Houston is 4-3 in Series action by virtue of taking the '72 Fall Classic from Baltimore . . . The Astros hope to get starting third baseman Steve Ontiveros back into their lineup by game three. Ontiveros has been suffering from a strained back muscle injury sustained in the final week of the regular season. He may be available to pinch-hit earlier in the Series . . . The Orioles have announced that they will go with a three-man rotation for the Series. Left-hander Ken Holtzman will move to the bullpen. |

May Leads Astros in JIM World Series Opener
Baltimore--Houston brought some May to the Maryland October.
Astro left fielder Carlos May went 3-for-4 and drove home three runs as Houston took the 1974 Joy in Mudville World Series opener 5-2 Saturday afternoon. May and his teammates seemed to pick right up where they left off from the 1972 Fall Classic at Memorial Stadium. That year Houston defeated Baltimore in a seven-game World Series. Jimmy Wynn opened the Houston scoring with a first-inning home run off Baltimore starter Jon Matlack. Meanwhile, Astro starter Ken Forsch pitched into the seventh inning before yielding to the bullpen. The right-hander allowed two runs on six hits. While Forsch uncharacteristically walked five, the Orioles repeatedly failed to capitalize. Baltimore wound up leaving nine men on base. After right-hander Kent Tekulve got the final two outs in the eighth, Astro closer Mike Marshall pitched a perfect ninth to lock up the victory. Matlack suffered the loss. The Baltimore left-hander allowed four earned runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings. Matlack walked two and struck out three. Sunday's game two will pit Houston right-hander Don Wilson against Texas native Nolan Ryan for Baltimore. Big First Inning Ties Up Series for Orioles
Baltimore--The Baltimore Orioles came out with a bang and as a result the Joy in Mudville World Series is even.
The American League champion Orioles scored six first-inning runs and then tacked on two more in the second en route to a 9-5 drubbing of Houston Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. With the Series now tied, game three will be played Tuesday at the Astrodome following a day off for travel. Baltimore sent all nine batters to the plate in the Series record-setting first frame against Houston starter Don Wilson. Short stop Chris Speier capped the scoring with a two-run homer. Oriole designated hitter Johnny Grubb led the offensive assault with four hits. Third baseman Bill Madlock added three hits, and first baseman Steve Garvey drove home three for Baltimore. Houston did mount a late threat scoring three runs in the final two innings. Oriole closer Rawly Eastwick ended the game by getting Steve Ontiveros to ground into a force. Ontiveros was seeing his first action since Sept. 28. He was used as the Astro DH after missing two weeks with an injured back. Ontiveros had one hit and drew three walks in the game. Nolan Ryan pitched seven innings as the right-hander notched his second victory of the post-season. Ryan struck out eight Astros. Tuesday's game three will likley match Tom Seaver for the Orioles and Frank Tanana for the Astros. With the Series shifting to Houston, the DH will not be used. JIM World Series Notebook
It's goodbye to Baltimore and the designated hitter and hello to Houston and the pitcher batting.
With the Joy in Mudville World Series leaving the outdoor setting of Memorial Stadium and heading indoors to the Astrodome, each club must now alter its strategy. If Baltimore wishes to keep left-handed hitting Johnny Grubb in the lineup, it must move the DH into the outfield. After Grubb collected six hits in nine at-bats in the Series first two games, this appears a manuever the Orioles will likely make. Thus, Baltimore has to decide who sits. Will it be right fielder Billy North? The Oriole speedster is batting just .194 in the post-season yet removing him from the lineup raising the question of who will lead off for the Birds. How about left fielder Ken Singleton? Although Singleton has also struggled in the playoffs, the switch-hitter did manage two hits and two RBIs in game two. Finally, there's center fielder Amos Otis. Like both North and Singleton, Otis hasn't exactly excelled at the plate in the post-season. However, his Gold Glove-caliber defense is vital in the cavernous Astrodome. Otis also had two hits including a triple in the Series second game. On the Astro side of the ledger, Houston must make a decision on who plays third base. Veteran Steve Ontiveros returned in game two as the Houston DH. Sidelined for two weeks with back ailment, Ontiveros will likely replace speedy but light-hitting Jerry Royster in the lineup. The Astros are crossing their fingers that his back holds up. Game Three Pitching Matchup Game three presents an interesting pitching matchup. On the Baltimore side, you have veteran Tom Seaver. The right-hander is a three-time All-Star and odds-on favorite to grab his second Cy Young Award. However, Seaver is just 5-5 in career post-season starts despite a 2.23 ERA. Yet, this season the Oriole ace is 2-0 with a dazzling 1.20 ERA. For Houston, rookie Frank Tanana gets the nod over fellow first-year pitcher Jim Bibby. Tanana sparkled in his game five, pennant-clinching performance against Pittsburgh in the NLCS. After winning all seven decision down the stretch, Bibby was battered in the playoffs by the Pirates. Insiders say that Bibby may get the nod in place of disappointing Don Wilson in game five. Triple Coverage The Orioles set a JIM World Series record by tripling twice in their game two victory. Bill Madlock tripled in the first inning off Houston right-hander Don Wilson. Madlock was making his first start of the Series. He played third base while Darrell Evans shifted to second and Bobby Grich went to the bench. In the sixth inning, Amos Otis tripled into the right-center field gap off Astro left-hander Will McEnaney. Last edited by Joy in Mudville; 08-16-2008 at 02:43 PM. |

Seaver, Lineup Changes Propel Baltimore to Game Three Victory
Houston--A top-flight pitcher and a shaken lineup were the key components in Baltimore's 6-1 victory over Houston in Tuesday's Joy in Mudville World Series game three.
The Orioles rode a four-run second inning to the win behind the terrific pitching of staff ace Tom Seaver. The right-hander pitched seven innings of four-hit baseball as Baltimore grabbed a two games-to-one lead in the Series. Oriole third baseman Bill Madlock went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in his second start of the Series. Meanwhile, with regular leadoff man Billy North on the bench because of no DH in the National League park, Amos Otis moved to the top of the order. Despite a lackluster post-season thus far, Otis responded with two hits and an RBI. Ken Singleton, hitting in the No. 2 slot behind Otis, cracked a fifth-inning two-run homer off Astro rookie Frank Tanana. The Houston left-hander allowed four earned runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out seven in six innings. Seaver improved his post-season record to 3-0 this fall. The veteran right-hander walked two and struck out eight before being pulled for a pinch-hitter. Left-handed rookie Jim Burton pitched the final two innings. Burton retired all six batters he faced. Game three is Wednesday at the Astrodome. Baltimore will start left-hander Jon Matlack, and Houston will counter with righty Ken Forsch in a rematch of the Series opener. Orioles "Slay" Astros in 14 Innings
Houston--Two years ago Bill Slayback was a World Series goat. In Wednesday's game four, the Baltimore pitcher became a savior.
Slayback's heroics came after Baltimore blew a four-run ninth-inning lead. The veteran right-hander came out of the bullpen to pitch five scoreless innings as the Orioles moved to within a win of claiming their second JIM World Series title. After nearly handing the game to Houston, the Orioles slipped away with a 6-5 victory in 14 innings at the Astrodome. Baltimore now leads the Series three games to one. Baltimore appeared to have the game well in hand. The Orioles scored two runs on bases-loaded walks in the top of the ninth to take a 5-1 lead. However, Oriole closer Rawly Eastwick failed to finish things off. A Steve Ontiveros double and a Mike Hargrove single put runners on the corners with no outs. Pinch-hitter Cesar Geronimo scored Ontiveros with a sacrifice fly. Eastwick then struck out pinch-hitter Doug Rader for the second out. Then, things fell apart for Baltimore. A walk to Steve Yeager brought left-hander Tug McGraw in for Eastwick. McGraw, however, walked Jose Cruz and Joe Morgan in succession to bring Houston to within two runs. Right-hander Ray Burris came in from the bullpen. However, Burris tied the game by walking Jimmy Wynn and Cesar Cedeno with the bases loaded. Finally, rookie reliever Jim Burton ended the inning by striking out Ontiveros. The game then settled into a battle of the bullpens. Houston had its best chance to score in the 13th. With one out, the Astros were forced to allow pitcher Don Wilson to bat because they were out of pinch-hitters. Wilson, however, reached base when second baseman Bobby Grich dropped his looping pop fly for an error. Yeager followed with a single that sent Wilson to third. Slayback then bore down and struck out Cruz for the second out. After Morgan walked to load the bases, Wynn grounded out to Grich. Baltimore scored its game-winner the next inning. Johnny Grubb singled off Wilson for his third hit of the day. After Grubb stole second, Darrell Evans sacrificed him to third. Steve Garvey's long fly ball then brought home Grubb. Slayback, who gave up a Series-deciding home run to John Mayberry when Baltimore and Houston met in the 1972 Fall Classic, pitched a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning. Astros Stay Alive with Romp
Houston--Thursday's home finale in the Astrodome didn't turn out to be the last game of the season.
After falling behind 2-0, the Houston Astros romped to a 12-2 rout of Baltimore. Thus, the Joy in Mudville World Series heads back to Baltimore with the Orioles' lead cut to three games to two. Astro rookie pitcher Jim Bibby wound up giving a worn-out bullpen much needed rest with a complete game eight-hitter. After yielding those two first inning runs, Bibby shut out the Orioles the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the Astros roughed up Oriole starter and Texas native Nolan Ryan for eight runs, six of which were earned. While the Oriole right-hander struck out 10 batters, he also issued 10 walks and seven hits in seven innings. Houston then pounded left-handed reliever Tug McGraw for four more runs in just one inning of work. Right fielder Jimmy Wynn went 4-for-4 and teammate Carlos May banged out three hits and four RBIs to lead the Houston hit parade. Leadoff hitter Joe Morgan walked four times and stole a single-game Series record three bases. The Astro victory forces the Series back to Memorial Stadium. Game six is Saturday afternoon. Baltimore seeks to clinch the championship with right-handed ace Tom Seaver. Houston counters with left-handed rookie Frank Tanana. JIM World Series Notebook
Following Houston's 12-2 drubbing of Baltimore Thursday at the Astrodome, Oriole fans are wondering if their team is again on the verge of a World Series collapse.
While Baltimore has won more games than any other franchise in the five-year history of the Joy in Mudville League, the Orioles have popped the corks on World Series champagne just once. A year ago the Birds lost a game-seven home showdown with staff ace Tom Seaver on the hill. The Pirates got an outstanding performance from Dock Ellis and pulled the championship trophy away. With Seaver scheduled for game six and lefty Jon Matlack waiting in the wings should a seventh and deciding game be needed, even the most positive-minded thinking Baltimore supporter is a bit nervous. Adding to the mix is the fact that the Orioles let a three games-to-two lead over Houston slip away two years ago and the Memorial Stadium turf maybe isn't as friendly as it should be. Either way, this season's Fall Classic marks the fifth straight year the Series has gone at least six games. Battered Bullpens Following game five's 13-inning marathon, both teams needed their starters to go deep into game six. Houston wound up getting a complete game from rookie right-hander Jim Bibby. Baltimore stayed with righty starter Nolan Ryan longer than it normally would have to rest a weary bullpen. With a day off for travel, expect both teams' pitching staffs to be near full strength for game six. Terrible Tug After losing the 1972 JIM World Series to Houston, Baltimore traded promising outfielder Rick Miller to the New York Mets for left-handed reliever Tug McGraw. While Miller hasn't exactly taken the National League by storm, McGraw has been a major disappointment to the Orioles. Expected to take over the closer role in Baltimore, McGraw has become a situational left-hander who has been hit harder than Ike Turner's wife. McGraw's ineffectiveness has been even worse this post-season. The 30-year-old has given up 11 hits in just 2.2 innings. In addition, McGraw has walked five batters and yielded 10 earned runs. His "Astronomical" post-season ERA is a far cry from his double-digit save days with the Mets. The Young and the Restless On the verge of elimination, Houston will send a rookie to the mound. Hard-throwing lefty Frank Tanana will pitch for the Astros in game six at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium. Tanana pitched the pennant-clinching win in the National League Championship Series against Pittsburgh. Tanana follows right-hander Jim Bibby who went the distance in Houston's 12-2 rout in game five at the Astrodome. Last edited by Joy in Mudville; 08-18-2008 at 10:17 PM. |

Leave It to Seaver: Orioles Win '74 JIM World Series
Baltimore--Leave it to Seaver.
The Baltimore Orioles became the first team in Joy in Mudville League history to win two World Series behind the strong pitching of staff ace Tom Seaver. Seaver pitched a complete game seven-hitter as Baltimore downed Houston 5-3 Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Seaver, who also won game three, was selected as the World Series Most Valuable Player. With the game tied 1-1, the Orioles grabbed the lead for good with a pair of third-inning runs. Both of those came off Houston starter Frank Tanana, who hurt his own cause by hitting two batters in the inning. Baltimore added two insurance runs in the fifth. Center fielder Amos Otis, benched for game five in Houston, hit a solo homer to help chase Tanana from the game. In the meantime, Seaver held the Astros in check until he tired in the ninth. Houston scored on a pinch-hit bloop single by veteran Doug Rader. However, Seaver got catcher Steve Yeager (who had earlier homered) to hit a grounder to short for the final out. Baltimore also gained revenge from the 1972 JIM World Series it lost to Houston in seven games. The Orioles have claimed five American League East divison titles, four AL pennants and two World Series. Seaver finished the post-season with a 4-0 record and a 1.74 ERA. Seaver Earns Series MVP Honors
Baltimore pitcher Tom Seaver earned the 1974 Joy in Mudville World Series Most Valuable Player Award.
The 29-year-old right-hander won both his starts in the Fall Classic against Houston. Seaver posted a 2.25 Series ERA. He walked eight and stuck out 13 in 16 Series innings. Seaver becomes the second Oriole to win the World Series MVP. Left-handed pitcher Mike Cuellar took home the honor in 1970 when Baltimore won its first championship.
