MY LIFE IN 2023
EC's Life's Filled with Glee in '23 EC was a little bit disappointed in my latest literary endeavor by Slammin' Sam Weiser, a baseball book entitled "Baseball Bafflers 2"... not much in it that was very interesting... EC didn't get much material to use here in this thread. "Wit, Quips and Quotes from the Diamond Minds" Excerpted from the book "Baseball Bafflers 2: The Second Inning" by Slammin' Sam Weiser. The book was dedicated to "those who hate to read, but love baseball"... that is a very apt description of yours truly, EC. Question: Who was the only starting pitcher in World Series history to bat somewhere in the lineup other than the traditional number 9 slot? Answer: It was a guy who was a pretty fair .342 hitter in his career with 714 homers... yep, his name was George Herman Ruth... better known as Babe Ruth... he was the starting pitcher in the fourth game of the 1918 World Series and he batted in the number 6 slot in the batting order. Ruth won the fourth game of the series 3-2 over the Chicago Cubs... he worked 8 innings and got the win, his 2nd of the series... Ruth allowed 2 runs on 6 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts... at the plate he went 1 for 2 and tripled in 2 runs. By the way, during this game, Ruth's streak of 29 and two-thirds scoreless innings in the World Series came to an end... this was the World Series record at that time. In the World Series opener, Ruth batted in the #9 spot and went hitless in 3 appearances with 2 strikeouts... on the mound he was outstanding, firing a complete game and shutting out the Cubs 1-0 on 6 hits with one walk and 4 Ks. The Boston Red Sox won the 1918 World Series 4 games to 2 over the Chicago Cubs in 6 low-scoring pitcher's battles. Last edited by Eugene Church; 08-21-2023 at 04:00 PM. |

Monday, May 15, 1961 JACKS SWEEP TO THE TOP OF THE SUPREME LEAGUE, TAKE TWO THRILLERS FROM TIGERS The top team in the South Island Supreme League at the midpoint in the season is the Jackson Jackalopes (10-4), who swept their way to the top of the standings with a pair of one-run wins over the Meraux Tigers (9-5) this past weekend... the Jacks captured the opener 6-5 and then triumphed 1-0 in the nightcap... this gave Jackson a one-game margin over Meraux... third place Braxton (8-6) won a pair with the Mystic Mariners (6-8), winning the opener 6-3 and the second game 4-1... fourth place Delta (7-7) walloped the Zebulon Zips 13-7, but fell in the nightcap 5-3... winding up the weekend action Grin Hill and New Yerby divided the doubleheader... the Smileys prevailed 10-8 in 13 innings in the opening game, but were nicked 5-4 by the Yankees in the second game. MY LIFE IN 1961
EC's Tryin' To Have Fun in '61 EC can just turn on the stereo and get happy... EC dearly loves music... and '61 is a wonderful year for music... earlier I posted a list of the top 20 or 30 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 and there weren't many duds on it... some of my all-time favorite songs were on it... my South Island League is currently playing in May, 1961... on May 14, 1961 the #1 song all across the whole wide USA was by Del Shannon and entitled "Runaway". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziLagAgoPCE |

Monday, May 15, 1961 TOP TEAM JOLIET KEEPS 2-GAME LEAD IN SECONDARY LEAGUE AT SEASON'S HALFWAY MARK At midseason in the South Island Secondary League the jolly Green Giants of Joliet (10-4) are riding high in first place with a 2-game margin over the runner-up Oaks of Pelham (8-6). 3 teams are 3 games off the pace, deadlocked for third place with 7-7 records: Parkland, Littleville and Bar Harbor. This weekend Joliet split a pair with Cherrywood, losing 9-3 in the opener and winning the second one 9-7. Pelham divided 2 games with the St. Dominic Saints, drubbed 7-3 in game one, but the Oaks came back and blanked the Saints 5-0 in the nightcap. Parkland won both games from slumping Bar Harbor 4-2 and 16-2, while Littleville and Billings each won a game. The Supermen prevailed in the first one 5-1 and the Rams were victorious 4-1 in game two. Last edited by Eugene Church; 08-30-2023 at 05:51 PM. |
