New York Gothams (35-45 .438 18.5 GB in 7th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (54-27 .667 1st place)

Tom McDowell, N.Y. (23-8.0) (R 5-6 5.54 12.2-2.7-2.3 H-BB-K/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (22-7.6) (R 8-4 2.97 9.6-1.4-3.2).

Won - 5 to 4

Rice followed his typical pattern of late: he gave up 3 runs in the 1st, 1 in the 3rd and then shut them down. We did not get our 1st hit until 2 outs were recorded in the 6th, when LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) hit his 4th home run of the season over the short right field fence. We managed to tie the game up before going into the 9th inning. In the top of the 9th, LHP Dave Frazier (27-5.7) came in to pitch because they had 2 left-handed batters leading off and I had pinch-hit for Rice. The 1st batter doubled and the 2nd singled, but CF Fred Bianco (28-6.9) threw out the runner at home. Frazier managed to retire the next 2 batters and get out of the inning. Playing in his 2nd game of his major league career, C Jack Henderson (27-4.5) led off the bottom of the 9th and hit one over the right field fence to give us the win. He now has 2 home runs in 2 career games played.

In 8 innings, Rice allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

McDowell gave us 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. At bat, he had 2 hits.

We made 3 errors and New York made 4.

LF Al Lewis had 2 hits with a home run and scored 2 runs. 2B Al Shaffer (27-5.6) had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

For the Gothams, 1B John Hilliard (27-7.2) had 3 hits with a double and his League-leading 14th home run of the season, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. It was his 6th (!!) home run against us this year. He and LF Charlie Warner (33-9.2) of Boston are the 2 biggest thorns in my side. 2B Bill Baker (25-3.6) had 3 hits with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs.

This was our 8th win in a row and 13th out of the last 14 games. To pull this one out of the hat proves that we are playing under a special blessing of the baseball gods. 5 of the wins in our 8 game streak have been by a single run and 2 of them were sudden death wins.

Liberty League:
Cleveland (17) at Cincinnati (3): Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (15-24) over John Stevens (30-8.2) (18-17). I believe Cleveland set the all-time record with 5 home runs in this game. Pedersen allowed 3 hits, 4 walks and struck out 1. Manager/C Deacon Dubin (30-8.8) had 4 hits with his 3rd home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. CF Jake Howard (28-4.6) hit a double and his 4th home run of the year and scored 4 times. Rookie 1B Kid Stryffeler (25-9.2) had 4 hits with a double and a home run and 3 RBIs. RF John Bradbury (26-7.6) hit a home run. 2B Jesse Flanders (27-5.4) hit his 7th of the year. Former Hurler Trophy winner Stevens is 2-8 in his last 10 starts. The Reds losing streak reaches 7 games.

Pittsburgh (8) at Louisville (3): Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (16-15) over William McLeod (28-5.6) (19-13). Mathews allowed 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. C Wilson Wendling (26-4.1) hit his 6th home run of the season. For the Bourbons, C Andy Runnels (30-7.8) hit a home run.

Indianapolis (3) at Boston (4): Dave Wolf (24-4.7) (12-6) over Jimmy Euler (26-5.5) (10-10). Wolf allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. Euler allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. LF Charlie Warner (33-9.2) hit his 11th home run of the year. C Hub West (33-6.7) hit his 4th.

Grand National Association:
Brooklyn (3) at Baltimore (4): Pop Yurkovich (35-6.1) (15-22) over Al Green (24-3.8) (18-20). Yurkovich allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. Green allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4.

Providence (8) at Omaha (9): Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (17-23) over Ed Hodges (27-3.2) (9-24). Providence scored 7 times in the top of the 9th to just miss a miracle. Sprague did not allow an earned run. For the Grays, 1B Charlie Gregor (28-5.2) hit his 3rd home run of the year.

Milwaukee (5) at St. Louis (7): Fred Barrow (35-4.7) (18-17) over Zachary Buchanan (26-4.0) (21-15).

Kansas City (2) at Chicago (6): Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (26-16) over Al McClaughry (23-5.6) (26-15). Chicago scored 5 runs in the 7th with the help of 3 errors. Seguin allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. McClaughry allowed 6 hits, 4 walks and struck out 3.

For the Mutuals, LF Fred Negus (23-6.7) had 4 hits with a double and a home run, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Manager/C Deacon Dubin (30-8.8) has his Spiders in town to begin a 3 game series today. We are 6-3 against them on the season and swept them in 3 games at Cleveland back on June 9-11 the last time we met. They are 7th in runs scored with 6.0 per game (Detroit 6th with 6.0). They are 5th in runs allowed with 6.7 per game (Detroit is #1 with 4.7).

Cleveland Spiders (35-48 .422 21 GB in 8th (last) place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (56-27 .675 1st place)

Ed Pedersen, Clev. (25-5.1) (R 16-24 4.28 10.3-2.3-2.0 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 27-8 2.47 8.7-1.4-3.6).

We are 2-2 against Pedersen so far.

Jock Cole (25-6.1) is going to move to 1st base. His defense at 2nd this season has been atrocious; he is last among qualifiers in fielding average. 1B George House (28-4.3) will unfortunately move to the bench.

Our lineup: 1) LF Lewis 2) 3B Boullion 3) 2B Shaffer 4) RF Smith 5) 1B Cole 6) SS Nelson 7) CF Duncan 8) C Trever

Won - 5 to 4

The 1st ball hit to Cole at first was converted into an error.

Townley allowed 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out no one.

Pedersen gave us 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. At bat, he had 2 hits with a double and a walk, but no runs or RBIs.

We made 5 errors and Cleveland made 9.

RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) hit a double, stole a base and scored 2 runs. 1B Jocko Cole (25-6.1) had an infield hit and scored 2 runs. SS Tom Nelson (21-6.6) had 2 hits, stole 3 bases, scored a run and had an RBI. C Tom Trever (24-4.7) had a hit and 2 RBIs.

Liberty League:
Cincinnati (4) at New York (1): John Stevens (30-8.2) (19-18) over Miah Turner (26-5.3) (18-12). Stevens allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. Turner allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

Indianapolis (2) at Louisville (10): Sammy Berry (27-5.5) (8-6) over Joe Osborne (29-3.0) (0-7) in relief of Jimmy Euler (26-5.5). Berry allowed 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out no one. Euler left in the 1st inning with what he that was a traumatic injury but turned out to be nothing. SS Freddy Parsley (27-7.5) hit his 4th home run of the season.

Grand National Association:

Baltimore (9) at Kansas City (8): Bill McGee (29-7.9) (4-4) over Lew Burnett (26-4.5) (23-21). Rookie 2B Kitty Covington (22-5.4) had 4 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. RF Sol Renaud (30-5.7) had 2 hits with his 3rd home run of the year, scored 2 runs and had 5 RBIs. For the Cowboys, CF Jimmy Harrison (25-5.4) will miss a week or two with what they are calling a "mild shoulder strain". If it is a mid shoulder strain, then why is he missing any time?

Milwaukee (2) at Chicago (4): Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (28-16) over Freddy Wood (31-6.3) (20-19). Seguin allowed 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. Wood allowed 6 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. The Brewers have lost 5 in a row.

We are in Kentucky today to begin a 3 game series with manager Elmer Higgins (41-6.4) and his Bourbons. We are 9-3 against them on the season so far and beat them in 2 games in Detroit a couple of weeks ago the last time we met. They are 3rd in the League in scoring with 6.3 runs per game (Detroit is #6 with 6.1). They are 4th in runs allowed with 6.5 per game (Detroit is #1 with 4.7). Eclipse Park is very nice to hitters, except that it is the toughest place to hit a home run to right field, though almost the easiest to hit one to left.

Detroit Wolverines (59-27 .686 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Louisville Bourbons (44-44 .500 16 GB in 4th place)

Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 28-8 2.49 8.6-1.4-3.5 H-BB-K/9) vs. Count Childs, Lou. (31-3.1) (R 13-21 4.78 10.2-3.7-3.0).

Won - 8 to 4

13 wins in a row!

Townley allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 4.

Childs gave us 11 hits, 4 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had 2 hits with a double and scored a run.

Each team made 3 errors.

LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) hit 2 doubles and a triple and scored a run. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) had a hit and 2 walks and scored 2 runs. 1B Jocko Cole (25-6.1) had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Tom Nelson (21-6.6), who last game had the worst day ever, had one of the best days ever for a Wolverine today. He had 3 hits with a triple, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs.

For the Bourbons, 1B Pete Hinde (31-7.9) had 3 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Liberty League:
Cleveland (17) at Pittsburgh (6): Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (17-26) over Fred Horner (26-3.8) (1-6). 1B Dave Kelly (25-6.0) had 2 hits with a triple and 2 walks and scored 4 runs. CF Jake Howard (28-4.6) had 4 hits with a double, scored 3 runs and had an RBI.

Grand National Association:

Brooklyn (5) at Kansas City (7): Lew Burnett (26-4.5) (23-20) over Al Green (24-3.8) (19-22). Green had to leave after 6 innings with blurred vision from getting knocked in the head sliding into a base. They think he'll be okay in a few days. Rookie CF Heinie Ashmore (23-6.0) hit a home run.

We are in Pittsburgh to begin a 4 game series with manager Jesse Courtney (38-5.1) and his Puddlers today. Originally scheduled for a 3 game series, we will be playing a double-header on Saturday to make up for a rained out game. We are 8-2 against the so far and swept them in 3 games at the end of July to begin our wonderful last home-stand the last time we met. They are 5th in the League in scoring with 6.2 runs per game (Detroit is down to 7th after our last series with 6.0). Pittsburgh's Recreation Park, as opposed to our Recreation Park, is the toughest place to hit in the Liberty League and the toughest place to try to hit a home run. To give an impression of the toughness of the park, 2B Dan Smith (27-5.1), who is batting .338 on the season is hitting .295 at home and .377 on the road. P Whitey Mathews is 6-10 with a 2.09 ERA at home, but 10-9 with a 4.60 ERA on the road.

Detroit Wolverines (60-29 .674 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Pittsburgh Puddlers (35-50 .412 23 GB in 8th (last) place)

Lost - 3 to 2 in 11 innings

With 1 out and runners at 1st and 3rd, SS Al Hartford (22-5.0) fielded a groundball and fired home to nab the runner but threw the ball away instead to end the game.

We had 7 base-runners erased from the base paths: 5 by the catcher, 1 by an outfielder and 1 by the pitcher.

Rice allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit.

Horner gave us 10 hits, 6 walks and struck out no one. At bat, he hit a double, scored a run and had an RBI.

Each team made 3 errors.

RF Fred Bianco (28-6.9) had 2 hits. 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) had 2 hits and a walk. SS Al Hartford had 2 hits with a triple and scored a run before he lost the game with his throw.

Grand National Association:

Providence (6) at Kansas City (7): Lew Burnett (26-4.5) (25-22) over Ed Hodges (27-3.2) (10-27). Rookie CF Heinie Ashmore (23-6.0) had 4 hits with 2 doubles, a triple and a walk, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Baltimore (6) at St. Louis (0): Pop Yurkovich (35-5.6) (18-22) over Con Arnold (23-6.3) (6-9). Yurkovich allowed 3 hits, 5 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he hit a triple and scored a run. It was Yurky's 17th shutout of his career. Only Charlie Morlock with 26 has more.

Lost - 8 to 7 in 10 innings

With 1 out in the bottom of the 10th, CF Tom Duncan (22-6.6) dropped a flyball and then C Bumpus Dowdy (37-7.2) came to bat. His 1st 3 times up he struck out, but in the 8th he hit a 2-run double to tie the game and in the 10th he hit a single to win it.

Townley allowed 12 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. At bat, he had 3 hits and an RBI. In the 1st inning he made 2 fielding errors to help the Puddlers scored 3 runs in the frame.

With Wilcox and Stafford, the #2 and #3 home run hitters in the league, out, the Gotham's 1B John Hilliard (27-7.2) would seem to have the home run title locked up. The only question is whether he can break Wilcox's all0time record of 18. He has 17 right now. The Gothams have won 6 in a row.

That is not a misprint; the 2 teams played to the same exact final score in the same number of innings 2 days in a row. In 12 innings, Green allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. Wood had to leave in the 5th inning with a pulled calf, but should be fine in a few days. Rookie 1B Fred Collins (23-5.2) hit his 4th home run of the year.

Rinehart has won 5 of his last 6. Chicago has won 7 in a row and now has moved into 1st place. For the Orioles, rookie CF Jimmy Sleeman (24-3.3) hit his 3rd home run of the season.

We are in Indiana to start a 3 game series today against manager Bill Shell (43-6.3) and his Hoosiers today. We are 10-3 against them so far this year and we swept 3 games from then in Detroit a few weeks ago, though every game was a 1-run affair. They are 4th in runs scored with 6.3 per game (Detroit is back down to last with 5.9). They are last in runs allowed with 7.1 per game (Detroit is #1 with 4.7). Their 7th Street Park is the most even-handed park in the League to batters and pitchers, though hitting home runs out to left is a lot easier than hitting them to right.

Detroit Wolverines (61-32 .656 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Indianapolis Hoosiers (41-52 .441 20 GB in 6th place)

Al Rice, Det. (22-7.6) (R 9-6 2.93 9.6-1.4-3.5 H-BB-K/9) vs. Jimmy Euler, Ind. (26-5.5) (R 11-13 2.96 9.1-3.3-2.8).

Lost - 3 to 1

Euler retired the 1st 13 Wolverines he faced.

Rice allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

Euler gave us 3 hits, no walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. This was the best pitched game against us all year.

We made 2 errors and Indianapolis made 4.

RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) hit a double.

Next season, this team is going to score runs, I promise. I am sick of this crap and I am getting rid of every low character on the team and every non-hitting bum we have, provided I don't get fired. We may be in 1st place, but we are the most boring team in the League.

Liberty League:

New York (3) at Louisville (5): William McLeod (28-5.6) (23-14) over Miah Turner (26-5.3) (20-13). McLeod allowed 8 hits, 4 walks and struck out 4. Turner allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2.

Cincinnati (7) at Pittsburgh (8): Bill Henrichs (28-7.4) (4-4) in relief of Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) over Charlie Branham (27-4.2) (25-21). Pittsburgh scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th and 3 more in the bottom of the 9th to win. The winning run scored on a passed ball. The Reds out-hit the Puddlers 16 to 7. SS Jim Ware (33-5.6), an ex-Red, hit his 4th home run of the season.

Cleveland (7) at Boston (2): Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (19-27) over Dave Wolf (24-4.7) (14-7). Pedersen allowed 9 hits, 6 walks and struck out 3. He is 6-3 in his last 9 starts. Cleveland did not make an error. For the Red Caps, 2B Mike Stables (31-7.1) hit his 7th home run of the year.

Grand National Association:

Baltimore (1) at Kansas City (5): Dave Hendrich (24-6.0) (3-2) in relief of AL McClaughry (23-5.6) over Bill McGee (29-7.9) (4-7). McClaughry had to leave in the 5th inning with a sore ankle, but they say he'll be fine in a day or two. In 4.1 innings of shutout relief, Hendrich allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. For the Orioles, rookie CF Jimmy Sleeman (24-3.3) had 4 hits with a double, stole a base and scored a run.

Omaha (8) at Milwaukee (6) in 11 innings: Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (21-26) over Freddy Wood (31-6.3) (22-20). 3B Bones Collins (32-4.4) hit a 2-out, 2-run triple in the top of the 11th to put Omaha ahead.

Brooklyn (9) at St. Louis (10): Fred Barrow (35-4.7) (20-19) over Ren French (26-4.9) (21-19). St. Louis hit 7 doubles. Rookie 1B Pat Matthews (24-5.1) pulled a muscle and will miss about 5 weeks. For the Gladiators, rookie 3B Ed Cheney (24-7.8) hit his 5th home run of the year.

Providence (9) at Chicago (5): Ed Hodges (27-3.2) (11-27) over Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (32-17). Chicago out-hit Providence 14 to 11, but made 6 errors while the Grays only made 2. Rookie LF Tom Herold (22-6.4) hit a double and a home run, drew a walk, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs.

C Wiley Fobes (36-2.5) hit a double and 2 home runs, drew a walk and had 3 RBIs. He now has 4 home runs on the season. SS Freddy Parsley (27-7.5) has a sore back and will sit for a week to see if it feels better then. For the Gothams, 3B Ed Glass (28-4.5) hit his 5th home run of the year. C Charlie Harris (27-5.9) will miss 2-3 weeks with a sprained wrist he suffered in a collision at the plate, but he was the runner, not the catcher.

Cincinnati (5) at Pittsburgh (3): John Stevens (30-8.2) (22-18) over Fred Horner (26-3.8) (2-7). Stevens allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 2. He has won 4 in a row. For the Puddlers, SS Jim Ware (33-5.6) had a sore shoulder and will miss about 5 days.

Since Yurkovich is now 8-2 in his last 11 starts, the baseball gods were worried that he may have ended up with a winning record if they did not act swiftly. So they put a strain on his elbow and he will miss the rest of the season. In 6.1 innings, he allowed 1 earned run, 3 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. 3B Phil Lane (27-7.4) pulled a stomach muscle and will miss 3 to 4 weeks.
