Previous Playoff Appearances: Pittsburgh--1970 & '72, '73; Houston--1972 and '73.

Key Injuries: Houston--John Mayberry (out); Steve Ontiveros (doubtful).

Notes of Interest: These two teams have met in the playoffs the past two seasons . . . Houston won in 1972 and Pittsburgh triumphed last year. Each team then defeated Baltimore in the World Series . . . Pittsburgh played much of September without All-Star third baseman Richie Hebner who was sidelined with a tender elbow. Hebner is back and rested for the playoff opener . . . Houston lost All-Star first baseman John Mayberry to a season-ending injury in June. Third baseman Steve Ontiveros will likely miss the NLCS with a strained back . . . Both clubs got outstanding performances from rookie first basemen. For the Pirates, it was All-Star Andre Thornton. For the Astros, it was Mike Hargrove who filled in admirably when Mayberry went down . . . Speaking of rookies, Houston right-hander Jim Bibby came up from the minors to win all seven of his decisions down the stretch . . . Pittsburgh ace Dock Ellis is the career JIM leader with 122 wins.

Twins Win Playoff Opener, Lose Ace Reliever

Baltimore--Minnesota won the first Joy in Mudville League playoff game in the Twins' five-year history, but the price paid was high.

Minnesota defeated the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 Friday in 13 innings to take the opening game of the American League Championship Series. However, left-handed relief ace Terry Forster sustained a strained biceps tendon and will likely miss the remainder of the post-season.

For 7.2 innings, the game belonged to Twins' starting pitcher Bert Blyleven. The ace right-hander flirted with a perfect game, allowing no Oriole to reach base until Johnny Grubb lined a 1-2 pitch for a single with two outs in the seventh.

Blyleven and Minnesota held a 2-0 lead into the eighth inning. The Twins scored their two runs on a first-inning double by rookie Gary Matthews. Both runs, scored off Baltimore starter Jon Matlack, were unearned thanks to an error by short stop Chris Speier.

The Orioles finally tied the game in their eighth at-bat. Darrell Evans hit a two-run homer off Blyleven on a hanging curveball.

Both Blyleven and Matlack then held the opposition in check until the bullpens took over.

Baltimore let two potential game-ending scoring threats slip away. The first came in the 10th when pinch-hitter Walt "No Neck" Williams lined into a double play with two runners aboard.

The second chance disappeared by Billy North was thrown out attempting to steal third with one out and Grubb at the plate in the 11th.

Forster left the game in that same inning. After Grubb singled to right, Bill Madlock ended the inning by hitting into a force play. Forster walked from the mound, holding his left arm in pain.

Minnesota relievers Wayne Twitchell and Bill Zepp then held Baltimore scoreless the rest of the way.

The Twins scored twice in the 13th on a sacrifice fly by Richie Zisk and a single by Matthews.

The Orioles threatened again in the bottom half of the frame, but Ceasar Tovar threw out Johnny Oates as the Baltimore catcher attempted to take third on a single. Oates' miscue ended the threat and the game.

Minnesota's victory snapped a six-game AL playoff winning streak for Baltimore.

Game two will match Baltimore right-hander Tom Seaver against Minnesota lefty Jim Kaat.

Late Rally Provides Astros Liftoff

Houston--While their initial launch may have been delayed, the Houston Astros eventually took flight and game one of the Joy in Mudville National League Championship Series 9-4 Friday.

For six innings the defending JIM champion Pittsburgh Pirates and their starter Dock Ellis held Houston in check with a 4-0 lead. All the Pirate runs came via the longball as Al Oliver and then Andre Thornton hit home runs off Astro starter Ken Forsch.

Thornton, the rookie All-Star first baseman, hit a pair of homers. The 25-year went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs in his first playoff appearance. Oliver, the 27-year-old veteran, had three hits in four trips to the plate.

However, the Astros finally got going in the seventh inning. Houston scored three times off Ellis to cut the Pittsburgh lead to one run.

The Astros then loaded the bases off Ellis to open the eighth. Houston wound up scoring six runs off five different Pirate pitchers. A sacrifice fly by catcher Steve Yeager put the Astros ahead for good. Houston then added runs on a squeeze bunt by rookie Jerry Royster and three straight RBI singles. The inning finally came to an end when short stop Fred Patek made a diving catch off a line drive from Cesar Cedeno.

While the Pittsburgh bullpen struggled, the Houston relievers thrived. Steve Lawson, Larry Gura and Kent Tekulve held the Pirates hitless over the game's final three innings. Gura was credited with the win.

Game two will pit Pirate left-hander Luke Walker against Astro right-hander Don Wilson.

Seaver Evens ALCS for Orioles

Baltimore--Tom Seaver shook off the effects of a sore shoulder as the Baltimore ace led the Orioles to a 5-1 victory Saturday over Minnesota in game two of the Joy in Mudville American League playoffs.

Seaver, pushed back one day in the Oriole rotation due to his shoulder ailment, allowed only a first-inning run in his eight innings of work. Seaver gave up only five hits, walked two and struck out six. Reliever Larry Anderson pitched the ninth.

Meanwhile, the Orioles banged out 13 hits, five of which went for extra bases. First baseman Steve Garvey led the Baltimore offense with three hits, including a two-run homer off Minnesota starter Jim Kaat in the first inning.

Richie Zisk collected two hits and drove in the lone Twins' run.

Following a day off for travel, the AL playoffs will resume at Metropolitan Stadium in Minnesota. With the best-of-five series tied, the Twins will start right-hander Jim Perry. The Orioles will counter with righty Nolan Ryan.

Pirates' Rout Knots Up NL Playoffs

Houston--Any thoughts about the demise of the defending Joy in Mudville champion Pittsburgh Pirates were premature.

After dropping the National League Championship Series opener to Houston, the Pirates rebounded Saturday with a 9-1 rout of the Astros in game two.

Cleanup hitter Al Oliver led the Pittsburgh outburst with three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs. Every Pirate in the starting lineup had at least one hit; four had two or more hits.

Pittsburgh starting pitcher Luke Walker not only held the Houston bats in check, he also delivered a two-run double in the second inning off Astro starter Don Wilson.

With the NLCS tied at one game apiece, the series will shift to Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium after a day off for travel. The Pirates will start right-hander Bob Moose. The Astros will throw rookie right-hander Jim Bibby.

JIM Playoff Notebook: Both Championship Series Even

With both the American and National League Championship Series tied at one game each, all four teams enjoy a day off for travel in the Joy in Mudville playoffs.

The AL series shifts westward to the Twin Cities. This marks the first time in league history that Minnesota will host a playoff game. The Twins must battle Baltimore without ace reliever Terry Forster who was injured in the playoff opener.

Right-hander Wayne Twitchell has assumed the closer role for Minnesota. Twitchell, who came to the Twins in a 1972 trade that involved Luis Tiant, saved 14 games this season.

Over in the NLCS, the series moves eastward to Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium. The Pirates and Houston Astros have met in the NL playoffs for three straight years. Each team has advanced to the JIM World Series once. This year marks the first time there will be no sweep.

Awards Ballots Due Friday
League GMs are reminded that all ballots for regular-season awards need to be turned in by Friday.

Each GM should submit a ballot that includes a top five for Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Award for each league. The voting continues to follow the 10-8-5-2-1 points formant.

Each franchise also needs to select a team MVP and submit the name as well.

Two-Time Champion?
The odds favor the first team to win a second JIM championship.

Baltimore, Houston and Pittsburgh have all won a single World Series. While Minnesota is making its first playoff appearance, that means a 75 percent chance that we'll see our first two-time winner.

Free Agency on the Horizon?
Depending on your point of view, the storm clouds are forming in regard to free agency.

Rumors are making the rounds that the legal system is about to declare free agency active beginning with the 1976 season.

However, there are several questions that will need to be answered. If free agency is indeed enacted, which players will be eligible? How will the free agency process operate? Will there be a salary cap?

League GMs will soon have an opportunity to voice their opinions on these and other issues.

Possible New Ownersip
As the free agency rumors swirl, there are also whispers that new ownership groups may be taking over franchises as soon as next season.

Montreal and Detroit ownership are rumored to be in for possible changes. Coming off their worst season in franchise history, the Expos own the No. 1 overall pick in the June '75 amateur draft.

Meanwhile, the Tigers appear to be a team on the rise. Detroit has experienced back-to-back 78-win seasons and finished third in both years. Moreover, the Tigers feature an infusion of youth in the forms of AL home run champion Dave Kingman, AL MVP candidate and batting king Fred Lynn and promising left-hander Randy Jones.

Stayed tuned . . .

Ryan Masters Minnesota; Orioles Jump to 2-1 ALCS Lead

Minneapolis, Minn.--Nolan Ryan showed flashes of last year's Cy Young Award in Monday's Joy in Mudville American League Championship Series.

The Baltimore right-hander fired a two-hitter as the Orioles downed Minnesota 4-1 in game three. Baltimore leads the ALCS two games to one.

Ryan, 25-11 during the regular season, outdueled Twins' starter Jim Perry. Ryan did walk six, however he also racked up nine strikeouts.

Darrell Evans gave the Orioles an early lead with a two-run homer off Perry in the second inning. Evans has two playoff home runs against Minnesota.

The Twins cut the lead in half when Tony Oliva's sacrifice fly scored Jim Nettles in the third. Nettles led off the inning with a single. That was the last hit the Twins managed off Ryan in the game.

The Orioles added two insurance runs late in the game.

Game four is Tuesday. Minnesota will attempt to stave off elimination when right-hander Bert Blyleven takes the mound. Baltimore will start either game one starter Jon Matlack or fellow left-hander Ken Holtzman.

Pirates Pound Astros; Pittsburgh One Game from Return to World Series

Pittsburgh--Houston rookie Jim Bibby now knows the difference between the regular season and the playoffs.

Pittsburgh pounded Bibby and his Astro teammates 9-3 Monday at Three Rivers Stadium. Leading the National League Championship Series two games to one, the Pirates are a single win away from a return to the Joy in Mudville World Series.

Bibby won all seven of his decisions since being called up from the minors Sept. 1. But against Pittsburgh, the 29-year-old right-hander surrendered seven runs on eight hits and five walks in just five innings of work.

Willie Stargell, Riche Hebner and Milt May each collected two hits in the game for Pittsburgh. Hebner homered off Houston reliever Steve Lawson in the seventh and finished the game with three RBI.

The middle infield combination of short stop Fred Patek and second baseman Dave Cash each drove home a pair of runs for the Pirates.

Meanwhile, Pirate right-hander Bob Moose went the distance. Moose scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out four.

Game four is Tuesday in Pittsburgh. The Pirates will send veteran right-hander Dock Ellis to the hill. Houston counters with righty Ken Forsch.

Twins Bomb Birds, Force Deciding Game

Minneapolis, Minn.--Danny Thompson cleared the bases and erased the Minnesota Twins' playoff deficit all with one swing.

Thompson hit a bases-clearing double in the seventh inning and starter Bert Blyleven pitched a complete game as the Twins bombed the Orioles 8-3 Tuesday night at Metropolitan Stadium. The Joy in Mudville American League Championship Series is now tied at two games each.

The fifth and deciding game is Thursday back at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium. Baltimore is expected to start right-hander Tom Seaver. Minnesota will pitch left-hander Jim Kaat.

The Twins tied up the playoff series thanks mostly to their offense. Minnesota banged out 13 hits including four doubles en route to the victory.

Thompson delivered a key blow when his double off Baltimore reliever Tug McGraw scored three runs and essentially put the game out of reach. Those runs capped a four-run inning for the Twins.

Light-hitting short stop Leo Cardenas collected three more hits to raise his ALCS average to .556. Cardenas batted just .229 during the regular season.

The Twins chased Oriole starter Ken Holtzman after six ineffective innings. In his career Holtzman has won 184 games, yet the left-hander is just 3-3 with a 5.11 ERA in post-season play.

Blyleven, on the other hand, scattered 10 hits and struck out 11 Oriole batters.
