Wow there just aren't many in the early days ... a few in the 20's, a few in the 30's and they don't really start coming in with high #'s until the 70's. You should put together a list of early 1900 mexican fighters for someone to create.

Maybe one day while I'm bored at work I look into it.

Samson-Korner wins EBU HW Title

February 2, 1911

Paul Samson-Korner (12/9) (16-1) (pre) scored a TD5 over Frank Mantell (9/10) (19-7) to win the first EBU HW title. An accidental head butt opened a bad gash over the left eye of Mantell in the first round.

It was reopened in the second and then again in the fifth and the fight was stopped.

I had it 40-37 Samson at the stoppage. The official judges had it 39-37/38-38/40-36.

Pelkey wins AABU LHW crown

February 6, 1911

Arthur Pelkey (UR) (7-0-1) scored a SD12 over Seamon Johnson (UR/34) (10-5) to win the first AABU LHW title. Pelkey knocked Johnson down in the 2nd, but lost 4 out of the first 5 rounds.

Pelkey took over in the middle rounds as Johnson seemed to tire. Pelkey suffered a bad cut under his right eye in the 3rd. Johnson suffered a cut over his right eye in the 6th. Neither cut would factor in.

Johnson rallied in the last two rounds which made the decision close.

I had it 114-113 Pelkey. Lee MacRae (RE) had it 115-112 for Pelkey. The official judges scored it 116-113/113-114/116-113.

Gans sneaks by Walcott again

February 8, 1911

Joe Gans (CH) (34-4-3) had to rally winning 3 out of the last 4 rounds to score a SD15 over Joe Walcott (4/5) (25-14-5) for his second defense of the WBA Welterweight crown. Gans WBC belt was not on the line in this fight.

Gans held a slight lead after 7. Walcott was bleeding from the mouth after the 4th round. Gans got caught in the 8th and dropped. Walcott swarmed him but ran out of time to stop it.

Gans rallied to win the 9th, then Walcott took the 10th. The last 5 rounds were close, but Gans held a slight edge in most of them.

Walcott didn't like the decision and filed for a mandatory rematch after the fight. The LBA commissioner immediately turned it down. No controversary, no rematch was the ruling.

I had it 143-142 Gans. Jim Trunzo (RE) had it 142-142. The official judges saw it 141-143/142-141/143-141.

On the undercard

WW - Ted Lewis (UR/14) (14-1) UD10 Andy Watson (42/48) (12-6-2) 97-94 (lewis at pre)

FW - Kid Broad (77/75) (15-9-1) UD10 Tim Hegarty (72/76) (13-8) 98-92 (hegarty at pre)

BW - Watty Austin (32/26) (15-13-3) MD10 Chappie Moran (33/37) (20-21-3) (moran at post)

HW - Bill Farnam (96/83)(17-18-1) UD10 Pat Kieley (47/84) (21-19-1) (kieley at post)

HW - Black Bill (UR) (10-0) TKO7 Dan Hickey (club) (9-36-1) 60-55 (bill at pre, hickey at end in this club fight ... Bill moves to main with the win)

Dave Holly takes WBC crown

February 10, 1911

Dave Holly (14/CH) (19-6-8) managed to avoid a draw and took a SD15 upset win over Jack McAuliffe (CH/3) (36-7-2) to win the WBC Lightweight title.

Holly avenged a TKO12 loss to McAuliffe back in 1906. It was a very close fight which could have gone either way. The fight was dead even going into the 10th round, when Holly dropped McAuliffe. The champ barely beat the count but survived the round.

Holly came storming out to finish him off in the 11th but was dropped and had to hang on to survive the 11th. The two split the next two rounds, then Holly won the last two rounds for the win.

I had it 143-141 Holly. Dan Cuoco (RE) had it even at 142. The official judges had it 143-141/141-142/142-141. The commissioner has deemed there will be no mandatory rematch as the decision was fair in his eyes.

On the undercard

LW - Eddie Hanlon (29/21) (13-7-1) TKO7 Johnny Summers (58/68) (10-7) 57-57 (summers at pre)

FW - Joe Bernstein (14/12) (18-13-4) UD10 Jimmy Hill (30/40) (14-4-1) (hill at pre ... 11th straight win for Bernstein)

HW - Jim Dwyer (37/30) (27-11-1) UD10 Jack McCormick (54/67) (13-7) (mccormick at pre)

HW - Al Kauffman (17/15) (14-13-1) UD10 Jack Downey (90/95) (10-4-3) (downey at pre, kauffman stepped up to HW for this fight)

LW - Jack Dougherty (76/55) (10-8-3) SD10 Frank Steele (24/47) (11-5) (both at pre)

Herrera bounces back

February 12, 1911

Aurelio Herrera (10/9) (21-9) got an easy one after his tough loss to Chambers. He scored a TKO8 over Jim Smith (UR/35) (11-2-2) (pre) in a fight he was never challenged in.

Smith's left eye started swelling up in the first. He was cut over the right eye in the 2nd. He was down in the 7th and the fight was stopped because of the cut in the 8th.

I had it 70-65 at the stoppage.

On the undercard

BW - Joe Wagner (36/29) (15-15) KO6 Harry Forbes (28/31) (19-18-7)

BW - Dave Sullivan (11/7) (19-3-1) KO3 Cockney Cohen (42/49) (11-8-4) (sullivan at pre ... moved to prime after the fight)

HW - Hank Griffin (43/37) (22-9-2) UD10 Peter Felix (89/94) (16-18-2) (felix at post)

LH - Charlie Haghey (22/18) (18-5) KO3 James Barry (43/47) (12-9-1) (both at pre)

LW - Young Erne (61/54) (16-8) TKO9 Joe Stein (62/71) (12-7-1) (both at pre)

Hughes committs every foul in the book, loses title

February 14, 1911

Charley Harvey (2/CH) (14-3-4) was down 4 times, his left eye was swollen shut, and he was down double digits on every scorecard against Johnny Hughes (CH/1) (15-3-6) yet is the new Flyweight Champion.

Hughes wouldn't quit fouling and finally the referee had to stop the fight. Hughes was warned SEVEN times before the ref finally took a point away in the 11th. Then he came out in the 14th and dropped Harvey with a nice shot to the groin and the ref waved off the fight.

The only round won by Harvey was the 8th, when he scored a knockdown. Harvey was down in the 11th, twice in the 12th and again in the 13th.

The commissioner will not demand a rematch since Hughes was warned so many times.

I had it 127-114 at the stoppage

On the undercard

HW - James Jeffries (60/47) (37-11) KO1 Jack Marks (92/94) (10-12-1) (marks at pre)

MW - George Gunther (61/61) (14-6-1) DRAW10 Walter Coffey (34/34) (11-5-1) (both at pre)

WW - Honey Mellody (45/40) (19-16-1) KO8 Jimmy Mitchell (35/45) (11-10) (mitchell at pre)

HW - Jack Lester (64/54) (15-2-1) KO1 Marvin Hart (91/96) (17-17-4) na (lester at pre, :52 into the fight)

LH - Battling Levinsky (UR) (10-0) UD8 Harry Baker (club) (7-15-4) 80-72 (levinsky at pre for this club fight, moves to main with the win

he was off 4 months after the loss to chambers so it has been a while. Herrera is still prime and kicking though. He'll be around for a long time seeing as he only has 30 fights.

Boden wins regional title

February 16, 1911

Mike Boden (7/7) (15-1-3) was awarded a TD7 over Frank Girton (UR) (10-1) to win the USBA LHW title.

Girton was cut over the right eye in the first and it was ruled a head butt. The fight was stopped in the 8th and the score cards were totaled.

Girton was ahead in the 8th and lost on all cards by 1 point, so tough loss for him.

I had it 67-66 Boden. Everyone else involved had it the same score.

Driscoll cruises in title bout

February, 20, 1911

Jem Driscoll (CH) (39-6-1) scored an easy UD15 over Kid Landfield (5/7) (14-13-2) for his second defense of the IBF FW title. The victory also lands him even with Jack Johnson and Tommy Ryan as the only 3 fighters with 39 wins.

The outcome of this fight was never in doubt as Driscoll controlled it from the opening bell. Landfield was dropped in the 14th.

I had it 146-139. Klaus Dieter Hucke (RE) had it 148-138. The official judges had it 147-141/145-139/147-138.

On the undercard

He had alot of fights already when I switched to the aging method. So wherever he was then (maybe 8-9 fights ago) he'll have 20-35 fights until he goes post prime.

I decided to just let the guys go from where they were in prime because it was too hard to try and keep track. He is no eligible for the random retirement at the end of the year now to. If the year ended now he'd have a 50% chance of rolling for retirement then a 14% chance of retiring. He may fight at prime for another 5 years though.

Since switching to the aging, I've yet to have a guy advance from prime to post-prime. Once a fighter hits 60 fights I'm going to have a % of him switching to post at the end of the year also. Haven't decided a formula for that yet.
