Hey Bud, Where Ya Been?

Not gonna lie, this is the first I've ever heard of Bud Stewart, either in-game or IRL. Sometimes they just slip through the cracks.

Well we all know him now after this day of fun in the sun against the White Sox. Stand down, Bud, message received loud and clear.

You started this thread about the same time I started posting the Pirates Moneyball thread. You made a comment about seeing me in 50 years.

You're posting 1949 information, 49 years into your save and I'm posting 2000 information, 50 years into my save. (Real time I started a month before you but didn't post about it.)

Anyway I thought it interesting we've kept so close to the same pace.

If anything, I think we both look younger...

Looking forward to some more glory days for both of us before our respective ends.

I'm considering quitting getting blood tests. Every time I get one they find something else wrong. LOL.

I treat medical staff like a good lawyer treats a hostile witness and try not ask any questions I don't already know the answer to....

I have an understanding with my primary care physician that when he tells me I have six months to live when I leave his office I'm buying a pack of cigarettes.

The Final Countdown

What an epic way to bring the 1940s to a close, with a monumental showdown headed our way involving four clubs with a combined total of four playoff appearances and the chance for an historical World Series very much in the offering.

So I think we should give this one the full press with regard to coverage.

10 games or so to go, here are the two races as they currently stand.

Obviously, the defending Champ Dodgers made their one and only appearance to this point last year. The Cards' only appearance came in 1923. The Indians are yet to make it, while the White Sox are the relative dynasty of this lot, going two-for-two in their only WS appearances all the way back in 1907 and 1908.

That's a lot of futility and frustrated fans right there.

Righto, day by day is how we'll do this.

The View from the Gangplank: end of regular season, 1949

Well that was a nice little distraction from what, for our club, has been a disastrous stretch run. I'm just going to screenshot it and make no comments lest I say something I'll regret later. One thing I will say is that, with very few exceptions, the performance this squad has put in for us this season has been nothing short of a disgrace. An insipid, spineless, gutless disgrace.

Our sub-500 finish is just the 6th in Pirates history and it is just the 5th time we have finished in the second division. Unacceptable.

Batting titles to Joltin' Joe (his first since winning it in each of his first two seasons in 1936 and '37) and George Kell (his 1st). Big Klu leads the league with 46 HR and 138 RBI.

Ken Raffensberger enjoys some sort of renaissance in his age-32 season, leading the league with 20 wins and the AL with an ERA of 3.08. Harry Brecheen's 2.60 is the lowest overall. Ewell Blackwell is the King of K with an even 200 strikeouts, while Harry Eisenstat sets a new all-time saves mark with 41. That moves him to third on the career leaderboard with 132.

Final Top 20s

Final Leaders

Monthly Award Winners

August

American League
  • Batter – Bobby Doerr (Red Sox): 395 / 6 HR / 22 RBI
  • Pitcher – Ken Raffensberger (Yankees): 6-0 / 2.01 / 11 K / 44.2 IP
  • Rookie – Roy Sievers (Browns): 326 / 3 HR / 18 RBI

National League
  • Batter – Bob Elliott (Pirates): 349 / 6 HR / 23 RBI
  • Pitcher – Bob Rush (Cubs): 4-2 / 2.21 / 27 K / 61 IP
  • Rookie – Tommy Glaviano (Cubs): 294 / 1 HR / 7 RBI

September

American League
  • Batter – Ted Williams (Red Sox): 354 / 7 HR / 24 RBI
  • Pitcher – Joe Hatton (Browns): 5-1 / 3.70 / 15 K / 41.1 IP
  • Rookie – Johnny Pramesa (Tigers): 467 / 4 HR / 14 RBI

National League
  • Batter – Monte Irvin (Giants): 377 / 6 HR / 15 RBI
  • Pitcher – Harry Brecheen (Cardinals): 6-0 / 2.08 / 28 K / 52 IP
  • Rookie – Don Mueller (Braves): 372 / 1 HR / 20 RBI

Milestones and Observations of Note
  • 2500 hits: Wild Bill Wright
  • 300 HR: Ted Williams
  • Veteran Cubs reliever Jack Wilson goes down with a torn rotator cuff and will miss the rest of this season and a big chunk of the next. For Hank Borowy of the Braves, an even worse prognosis with him all but ruled out until 1951 by a UCL tear.
  • In an almost fitting end to a simply nightmarish season injury-wise for the Philadelphia clubs, A’s veteran Marv Breuer is set to miss close to a year after suffering a fractured elbow.
  • While it has little material effect on anything, with his Yankees not in the hunt again this year, nobody is happy to see Joe DiMaggio’s fantastic season cut short by a fractured foot.

I saw your Pyth record wasn't bad and was looking for causes...15-30 in one run games will do it. Ouch.
