Briggs retains title

January 10, 1911

Jimmy Briggs (CH) (17-10-5) scored a TKO9 over Cal McCarthey (3/4) (18-5) (mccarthey at pre) to retain the WBC Featherweight title. The WBA was not on the line in this fight.

McCarthey's inexperienced showed as he was cut in the 7th and then stopped on a bad cut under his eye in the 9th.

He had stayed even with Briggs, who is no where near as talented, through 8 but he was already worn out and then got hit too much in the 9th which led to the stoppage.

I had it 76-76 at the stoppage

On the undercard

BW - Jimmy Gorman (43/39) (14-2-1) DRAW10 Harry Tenney (12/13) (17-6-3) 95-95 (gorman at pre)

HW - Mike Schreck (65/48) (25-16) TKO5 Denver Ed Martin (29/49) (24-16) (end Martin's 7 fight win streak)

LW - Lockport Jimmy Duffy (UR) (12-1-1) UD10 Jack Hooper (18/33) (16-4-1) 98-92 (both at pre ... Hooper moved to prime after the fight)

FW - Harry Decker (42/35) (15-5-1) MD10 Fred Delaney (65/73) (10-9-1) (both at pre)

FW - Joe Cain (club) (3-17-3) SD8 Johnny Marto (UR) (9-1) 76-76 (marto at pre)

Langford comes on strong at the end to retain title

January 12, 1911

Sam Langford (CH) (26-6-2) knocked down Larry Foley (10/13) (25-9-3) in the first round and the had to rally at the end to beat Foley by MD15.

Foley got up after the knockdown in the first and won the next five rounds. He held a sizeable lead going into the 9th round and then the Champ won the next 6 rounds. Foley took the 15th but it wasn't enough.

I had it 143-141 as did ringside expert Markus Heinsohn. The official judges had it 143-141/142-142/145-140.

On the undercard

HW - Bill Lang (6/6) (22-6) KO1 Frank Slavin (12/16) (27-15-1) na (Lang wins the CBU regional title)

LH - Patsy Cardiff (12/10) (15-13-1) KO6 Larry Temple (47/50) (16-5-3) 48-46 Cardiff (temple blows chance to get back up in the rankings)

WW - Mike Glover (11/9) (17-0-2) UD10 George Milton (36/40) (9-6-1) 98-93 (both at pre)

WW - Terry Martin (7/6) (19-3-1) KO10 Jewey Cooke (74/76) (12-11-3) 88-84 (cooke fought at WW for this fight)

LW - Danb Custy (32/28) (12-2-2) UD10 Young Donahue (67/72) (11-7-3) (both at pre)

McAllister too green to win title

January 14, 1911

Fred Russell (CH) (17-7) dominated Bob McAllister (12/13) (14-2) (at pre) to take a UD15 for his first defense of the WBA LightHeavyweight title.

Russell dominated the fight from the start, only losing 3 rounds. He was dropped in the 8th but recovered quickly and knocked McAllister down in the 10th and the 11th.

McAllister's left eye started to swell in the 6th and in the 14th and 15th, it went past dark red and into purple. I have never seen that before.

I had it 146-136. Steve McCarthy ringside had it 147-136 and the official judges had it 146-136/143-139/145-137.

On the undercard

MW - Mike Donovan (43/39) (25-18-5) TKO1 Charley Johnson (65/club) (9-14-2) (johnson drops to club with the loss)

WW - Jack Britton (2/2) (19-3-5) TechDraw1 Al Neill (8-11-4) (37/36) (neill cut from a head butt)

FW - Doc Hollywood (UR) (11-0) UD10 David Morgan (57/63) (11-9-1) 96-93 (both at pre, Hollywood down for the first time)

FW - Eddie Lenny (51/41) (13-8-4) KO10 Monk Newsboy (72/75) (9-10-1) (newsboy at pre)

LW - Ray Bronson (UR) (10-0) UD8 Tommy Coleman (club) (5-21) 76-75 (bronson at pre for this club fight, moves to main with the win)

Klaus wins slugfest

January 18, 1911

Frank Kalus (CH) (20-6-1) won a brawl with George Rooke (19/26) (21-17-1) for his 5th defense of the WBA MW title.

Rooke came out quick and had a big first round, swelling Klaus' right eye. Klaus settled in and started dominating the fight.

Rooke caught Klaus with a right cross early in the 8th and dropped the champ. Rooke swarmed in and tried to finish the champ but Klaus survived the onslaught and dropped Rooke late in the 8th. Rooke couldn't beat the count.

I had it 68-65 Klaus at the stoppage.

Johnny Coulon (CH) (26-3-2) scored an easy win over Walter Croot (19/20) (12-3-3) (pre) to score his 4th defense of the WBC BW title. Coulon lost only one round as he battered the Croot who was in way over his head.

Croot was cut over the left eye in the 5th and it was reopened 3 times before the ref finally stopped it in the 14th.

I had it 129-118.

***** the Levin fight was one of the worst decisions in the LBA. Both the ringside expert and I had it 106-104 going into the last round for Levin. Levin knocked Lablanche down in the 12th and out pointed him 32-3 *****

That's a prime example as to why no other boxing game will be as good as this one ... perfect mixture of crappy decisions mixed in.

I think he's gonna be pretty good ... his lone draw was before I started hand holding the undefeateds (is that a word?) His draw was against Larry Foley. No big wins yet maybe only 5 of them against non-TC's.

I agree with you Mike, I love it that TBCB generates absolute screw-job decisions from time to time.
