September 1938
The Cubs appeared to be unbeatable as they began September. They won just 3 of their first 6 games, but after sweeping Cincinnati, their magic number had dwindled to just 1. They then hosted 2nd place Brooklyn for a 3-game set. The Dodgers swept the Cubs, but by that time is was too little too late. After the series ended, Chicago beat the Phillies 4-1 on September 15th and clinched a 3rd straight pennant. It is only the 3rd time in history that a team has won 3 straight NL pennants. The previous two times were the 1901-03 Phillies and the 1914-16 Cardinals. The AL race was much closer and had some great head-to-head matchups. On September 5th, the Yankees and White Sox met in the Bronx with New York holding a slim half-game lead. Chicago won the first game in 10 innings and went on to sweep the Yankees in their home park. That gave the Sox the AL lead and a 16-6 record against the Yanks this season. At the same time, the Browns swept Washington and on September 8th, St. Louis hosted the White Sox. Chicago swept that series too, which stretched their winning streak to 10 games. No other AL team was able to make up any ground after that point and the White Sox clinched their first pennant since 1930. This will be the second all-Chicago World Series. The other one was in 1917 when the Cubs won their second and last World Series 4-games-to-1. September 16th was an exciting day in New York, as the Giants hosted the Dodgers. Brooklyn was eliminated from the pennant race the day before, but plenty of fans turned out for this intracity matchup, and they were not disappointed. In the 1st inning, Oscar "The Kid" Vancini hit his 50th homerun of the season, becoming the first player to ever accomplish that feat twice. In the top of the 3rd, Giants centerfielder Fred "Froggy" Borgert hit his 39th homerun, giving New York a 3-1 lead. Then in the top of the 8th with Brooklyn leading 6-3, Borgert hammered out his 40th homerun, joining Vancini and recently retired Phillies catcher Willard Schwarz as the only players in history to reach that number. They last played each other in 1917 when the Cubs won their last World Series. The White Sox have not won a World Series since 1920, which was the last time the infamous eight Black Sox played in a major league game. The Cubs won 101 games and are just the 3rd team in NL history to win three consecutive pennants. However, much has been written about their offensive struggles. But despite a weak .274 team average, they did score the 5th most runs in the majors. Pitching is the team's bread and butter. They have a 3.72 ERA and have held opponents to a .256 average while allowing the fewest runs in the majors. The biggest difference between this World Series and the past two for the Cubs is the lack of injuries. In fact, all of their regular players are healthy. That allows them to throw out a complete rotation and intact lineup at their cross-town rivals. The White Sox boast the best team batting average in the majors (.300) and the 2nd best team ERA (4.00). They scored the most runs and held opponents to the 4th fewest. However, they were largely underestimated all season because they simply could not win games when they needed to. For example, they were 6-16 in 1-run games at mid-season and finished the season 17-22 in that situation. However, they finished the season with a huge 16-6 record against the Yankees and proved they could win big games by sweeping New York and the Browns in back-to-back series. My Prediction: The Cubs are on a mission to erase the past two years' World Series failures. They also could not live with losing to the White Sox of all AL teams. The Cubs believe the city of Chicago is theirs, and they do not want to share the local limelight with the "South Siders." The White Sox have a great offense, but you cannot underestimate the Cubs' ability to score despite their low averages. They have more power, and they have 3 batters with 90+ RBI. Meanwhile, pitching is a huge advantage for the Cubs. The White Sox may have the 2nd best staff in the majors, but the Cubs' ERA is 0.28 better (a huge margin), and afterall, 2nd is not good enough in the World Series. I predict the Cubs will win in 6 games. The other > one was in 1917 when the Cubs won their second and last > World Series 4-games-to-1. Well, let's not forget the two real stories there: First: "Sunday 9/19/1917: Chicago (A)'s Murphy severely injured CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s pitcher Andrew Murphy was part of a scary incident that saw the southpaw being hit by a line drive in the 5th inning of the game between Chicago (A) and Washington. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Murphy will miss about 7 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Finger which will require surgery. His ERA of 1.12 helped him to a 25-6 record this year. He struck out 137 and walked 53 in 296.1 innings. He has 30 complete games and 7 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins!" Losing The Greatest Pitcher Of All-Time to injury is a killer. But it got worse: 1917 World Series Game 2: Eddie "The Fixer" Whelan spotted the Cubbies to a 3-0 lead after 3 innings. The Sox scratched back, with Jed Burke (!) knocking in the tying run in the bottom of the 8th inning. The Cubbies got a one-out triple from Blatt in the 9th off of Gulp that they eventually plated. 1917 World Series Game 5: "The Fixer" was at it again. After matching Hugh Tiedt through a scoreless five inning, he suddenly "faltered" with the game on the line. He gave the Cubbies one in the 6th and four in the 7th. Thie time the Sox could only pull one run back from Tiedt and the final score was 5-1 to close out the Series. Game 5 the second of a stunning four Elimination Games that The Fixer tried to tank in his infamous career - the one game 1915 AL Playoff against Cleveland, Game 5 of the 1917 Series, Game 7 of the 1919 Series and Game 9 of the 1920 Series. Only in Game 9 of the 1920 Series were the poorly, down trodden Clean Sox able to overcome The Fixer's tactics. Lord knows I've beaten that into the ground over this thread. We just need to keep in mind that the Cubbies 1917 World Title wasn't cleanly won given Whelan's two tank jobs. :P > Vancini 50 and Froggy 40 box score That's super cool, Matt. Code:

I predict the Cubs will win in 6 games. I would be interested to see how the Top 3 pitchers on each staff match up, which would be the key in the series. If the Sox fall off sharply after their Big 3 which is what caused that 0.28 gap, those Big 3 might be enough to match up. Of course the Cubbies pitchers threw half their hitter friendly Wrigley, so they probably are better than their stats show. > Starting Lineups: > SS Keith Ahlberg, .264, 38 RBI > Key Players on DL: > SS Jamie Kubic, .329, 52 RBI, 21 SB Kubic got hurt? Oh, that's a crying shame. He was their heart and soul during the down years early in the decade. He also came over in the big trade that helped put them over the hump back in 1930. He really deserved to be here, and he looked to be having a fine year. Wait a minute... KEITH AHLBERG!!! Not Doc? Aw... this is killing me! ![]() Here's the Big 3 match up: Sox: > SP #1 - Ken "Stuffy" Zinn, 14-7, 3.16, 79 K > SP #2 - Lewis Lamson, 21-10, 3.36, 129 K > SP #3 - Babe Hardin, 18-13, 4.33, 74 K Cubbies: > SP #1 - "Punchy" Cote, 26-11, 2.89 ERA, 200 K > SP #2 - Alex Winterhalter, 26-8, 3.28, 117 K > SP #3 - SP David Wickersham, 21-14, 4.06, 218 K Pretty clear advantage to the Cubs. Not huge, but it's there. The parks would make it bigger. Go Sox~! Last edited by jdw; 06-30-2004 at 05:48 PM. |

He hasn't gotten more than 32 AB in any one month... On the season he is hitting .318 (41 for 129) with 7 steals in 13 attempts... He has 699 steals, 1459 runs and 2176 hits over his career... He is one of the great stories in the league, how he improved so greatly upon coming to Cleveland, especially beginning in 1932 at age 33.
Let's hope he gets to 700!! Duckie IS one of the great stories--I will write a fitting eulogy when he retires. |

WEB PAGES UPDATED... INCLUDING WORLD SERIES BOX SCORES
WORLD SERIES White Sox 6 - Cubs 7: The White Sox scored 4 runs in the first two innings, but their starting pitcher "Stuffy" Zinn injured his shoulder in the first inning. After the game, team physicians said he will not pitch the rest of the series and could miss the beginning of next season. The bullpen took over and allowed 3 runs in the 4th and 2 more in the 5th. The White Sox later took a 6-5 lead, but in the bottom of the 9th Cubs second baseman Kip Opitz started a rally with a 2-out single off Larry Glancy. Dave "Red Fox" Arkless doubled Opitz home to tie the game. He moved to 3rd on a wild pitch and Dewey Micklesen hit a hard line drive which was speared out of the air by John "Doc" Barton, who had entered the game in the 8th, to keep the game alive. In the bottom of the 11th with Glancy still pitching, pinch hitter Gord "Spud" Liggett led off with a double and moved to third on a ground out. Opitz then hit a screamer to 3rd base, which Rollie McCord could not handle, and Liggett scored the winning run. White Sox 3 - Cubs 7: The Cubs lit up White Sox starter Lewis Lamson for 7 runs off 15 hits and 4 walks. Alex Winterhalter allowed 3 runs (2 earned) but only 4 hits and 1 walk. Cubs 0 - White Sox 4: White Sox starter Babe Hardin was outstanding, shutting out the Cubs on 7 hits. The game was scoreless through 5 innings, but the Sox scored 3 runs off David Wickersham in the 6th, and that proved to be enough for Hardin. Unfortunately for the Sox, All-Star third baseman Rollie McCord injured his back while running out a double in that 3-run 6th, and he will miss the rest of the series. Cubs 8 - White Sox 2: The Cubs scored 6 runs in the first two innings off Bill Bailey, who was starting in the place of injured "Stuffy" Zinn. "Punchy" Cote was spectacular, limiting the White Sox to no runs and just 3 hits through 8 innings. In the bottom of the 9th, he allowed a lead-off triple. That runner later scored and Cote loaded the bases. Despite being late in the game, Cote reached back and struck out Louis Kirkes for the first out. David Oram grounded out and narrowly beat out a double play, allowing a second run to score. Gordon "Scotty" McCarthy, who was starting at third base with Rollie McCord injured, struck out to end the game. Cubs 10 - White Sox 7: What an exciting game! The White Sox scored 7 runs in the first 2 innings off Alex Winterhalter, but that was all he would give up in 5 innings. The Cubs narrowed the score to 7-3 after the 4th inning, but the score remained the same until the top of the 9th. Lewis Lamson allowed the first two batters to reach base. After a strikeout and a fly out, the Cubs collected 2 singles and 2 walks, bringing the score to 7-6. Lamson was removed in favor of Larry Glancy, who promptly gave up a 3-run go-ahead double to catcher Earle Clipp. Pinch hitter Rosie "Rooster" Johncock singled Clipp home and later moved to third on a single by David "Pops" McAuliffe. After Glancy mercifully collected the final out in front of a stunned crowd at Comiskey Park, the White Sox offense got runners at the corners with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. But reliever Eugene Lakin got pinch hitter Lee Friedman to ground out and end the game. Cubs leftfielder Dewey Mickelsen was named World Series MVP. He hit .350 with 1 homerun, 5 RBI, 4 runs scored, 4 walks, a .458 OBP and a .958 OPS. |

Hmmm.... 09/28/38 Lost 3-7 at CHN: 8 IP, 15 H, 7 R and 6 ER 10/02/38 Lost 7-10 vs. CHN: 8.2 IP, 11 H, 9 R, 9 ER and 8 BB Has Lewis Lamson been seen in the company of Ed Whelan in the past few weeks? ![]() The Sox do have this ability to go out with a BANG! Sox Manager Jeffrey Roland did a great job in the regular season, but leaving Lamson in there to throw 157 pitches has got to be one of the more questionable decisions in years. Great games for Game 1 and Game 5. This group of Cubbies certainly deserved a World Title the way they played the past few years. After dominating the regular season, you've got to be impressed by the never-say-die quality they showed in those two games. If they don't comeback in at least one of those games, they would have been looking at Game 6 against Babe Hardin who'd dominated them in Game 3. If they didn't comeback in both, Hardin would have had a chance to close them out in that game. Congrats to Harry Cohan and his Cubbies. John |
