Larry Diel was a star quarterback for Pius X High School in Downey, CA. He went on to attend Cerritos Junior College, from which he was drafted by the Montreal Expos. In the first photo below, he is shown in the football uniform of Pius X. It's from the Los Angeles Times of Nov. 24, 1966.

After choosing not to play pro baseball, he moved on to USC. The second photo shows him as a new member of the USC Spartans football team, wearing a business suit. It's from The Daily Breeze (Torrance, CA) of Aug. 29, 1970.

The photo below is from the Amarillo (TX) Globe-Times of Oct. 30, 1975. Sears attended Northwestern Oklahoma University. Then he transferred to North Texas University, where he became an All-American running back and caught the attention of the pro scouts.
