New York Gothams (17-19 .472 6.5 GB in 6th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (26-15 .634 1st place)

Tom McDowell, N.Y. (23-8.0) (R 3-1 6.25 12.3-2.0-2.2 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 12-4 2.45 9.0-1.3-3.2)

This is gonna stink if we get swept by the Gothams without even facing Miah Turner (26-5.3). LF Al Lewis (21-9.1) is ready to play again. We are 6-1 with him in the lineup.

Won - 5 to 3

Townley allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. That is the season high for K's for any of our pitchers. It's a different game this year, for sure.

We had 6 hits and made 3 errors. New York made 2.

2B Jocko Cole (25-6.1) had 2 hits, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs.

For the Gothams, SS Pussy Wise (25-6.8) had 2 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. P Tom McDowell had to leave in the 1st inning with a sore thumb, but should be fine in a day or two.

Liberty League:
Cleveland (8) at Cincinnati (5): Artie Boucher (24-6.1) (1-0) in his Liberty League debut over John Stevens (30-8.2) (8-9). Boucher was 4-0 in 4 starts for Pittsburgh last season in the GNA. Manager/C Deacon Dubin (30-8.8) had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the year and 4 RBIs.

Pittsburgh (1) at Louisville (9): William McLeod (28-5.6) (11-6) over Tom Adams (32-6.0) (2-4). McLeod allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. 11-6 with an expansion team is pretty impressive.

Indianapolis (14) at Boston (15): Will Vertner (23-6.9) (1-0) in relief of William Little (26-6.0) over Joe Osborne (29-3.0) (0-5) in relief of Sal DeVaux (32-3.5). Boston scored twice in the bottom of the 9th to win. The final run was scored on a 2-out wild pitch. SS John Ingling (27-4.6) had 4 hits with a double and scored 2 runs, including the winning one. CF Pat Stafford (26-5.4) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBIs. C Hub West (33-6.7) hit his 2nd home run of the year. For the Hoosiers, C Fred Smith (32-6.8) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 4 RBIs.

Grand National Association:

Providence (11) at Omaha (10): Bill Henson (30-6.5) (4-10) over Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (10-12). Omaha made 9 errors. For the Mutuals, RF Bill Hammack (34-5.0) had a hit in his 20th straight game.

Milwaukee (4) at Kansas City (3): Zachary Buchanan (26-4.0) (11-9) over Lew Burnett (26-4.5) (11-9). Buchanan allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Rookie SS Al Blanchette (22-7.7) had 5 hits with a double, stole 2 bases, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Manager/1B Pete Bucolo (39-4.1) has his Reds Caps in town to begin a 3 game series today. We beat them 3 of 4 in Boston a month ago the first time we met. They have dropped to 2nd in runs scored since 3B Bill Gordon (30-3.7) went out for the season, plating 7.1 runs per game (Detroit is still last with 5.8). They are 3rd in runs allowed with 6.3 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 4.9).

Boston Red Caps (23-19 .548 4 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (27-15 .643 1st place)

William Little, Bos. (26-6.0) (R 8-7 3.93 10.7-2.2-3.9 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 13-4 2.43 8.8-1.4-3.4)

Little leads the League in strikeouts.

Won - 9 to 8

2B Jocko Cole (25-6.1) made 2 errors in the 9th inning and then C Frank Douglas (32-5.8) doubled to bring the Red Caps within a run They had runners at 2nd and 3rd with only one out, but Townley got the next batter to hit a grounder right back to himself and the last batter lined out to 3rd to end the game and let us escape with a win.

Townley allowed 12 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3.

We had 9 hits and 7 walks and made 6 errors. Boston made 4.

LF Al Lewis (21-9.1) did not have a hit, but walked, stole 2 bases and scored 3 runs. 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) hit a triple, drew a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 2B Jocko Cole, who has been an error machine of late, has also been on fire with his bat. He had 2 hits and a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. CF Tom Panozzo (22-2.0) had 2 hits and a walk, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. SS Tom Nelson (20-6.6) had 2 hits with a triple, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

For the Red Caps, C Frank Douglas had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Liberty League:

Milwaukee (7) at Kansas City (10): Dave Hendrich (24-6.0) (1-0) in relief of Lew Burnett (26-4.5) over Zachary Buchanan (26-4.0) (11-10). Burnett left in the 4th inning with a shoulder twinge, but it turned out to be nothing much and he is fine. 3B Al Sarbacker (26-4.8) hit a home run.

Providence (10) at Omaha (4): Ed Wison (26-7.3) (6-9) over Lou Ellard (29-6.3) (2-2). C John Toler (29-6.4) had 4 hits, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. Boston Red Caps (23-20 .535 5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (28-15 .651 1st place)

Charlie Morlock, Bos. (37-6.7) (R 7-9 3.79 11.2-2.2-2.5 H-BB-K/9) vs. Ed Bush, Det. (27-5.3) (R 10-7 3.51 8.2-2.5-2.8)

Morlock has 292 career wins. We are also making a pool for how many home runs Bush will give up today. I have 4. You want in?

Won - 15 to 7

We were down 5 before we scored out 1st run. Bush let the Red Caps score in each of the 1st 4 innings, but only once in the last 5. This was our season high in runs so far. Every player in the lineup scored and knocked somebody in.

Bush allowed 9 hits, 4 walks and struck out 2. I lost the pool as he only gave up 1 home run. At bat, he had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

We had 14 hits and did not make an error. Boston made 6.

LF Al Lewis (21-9.1) had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. 2B Jocko Cole (25-6.1) had 3 hits and a walk, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. CF Tom Panozzo (22-2.0) had a hit and a walk, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. SS Tom Nelson (20-6.6) had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 1B Tom Duncan (22-6.6) had 2 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. C Jimmy Babcock (30-6.9) hit a triple, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

For the Red Caps, LF Charlie Warner (33-9.2) hit his 4th home run of the year.

Indianapolis (9) at New York (6): Sal DeVaux (32-3.5) (4-7) over Jack Roberts (35-6.1) (4-13). For the Gothams, C Jim Martin (25-5.0) tore some ankle ligaments and will miss at least 5 weeks.

RF John Rodgers (35-4.4) had 2 hits, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. For the Reds, rookie CF Ed Robling (24-7.3) hit a home run. RF Fleet Wilcox (30-4.9) had a hit for the 20th consecutive game.

Grand National Association:

Boston Red Caps (23-21 .523 6 GB tied for 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (29-15 .659 1st place)

Charlie Morlock, Bos. (37-6.7) (R 7-10 4.24 11.5-2.1-2.7 H-BB-K/9) vs. Dave Frazier, Det. (27-5.7) (L 4-3 2.61 8.5-2.3-2.3)

Lost - 7 to 6 in 11 innings

Our 2nd foray into the extra-innings region ends as unhappily as the 1st. LF Al Lewis' (21-9.1) 2nd error of the day allowed the lead off man to reach in the top of the 11th and he ended up scoring.

In 11 innings, Frazier allowed 9 hits, 4 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a walk and an RBI.

We had 11 hits and each team made 2 errors.

2B Jocko Cole (25-6.1) had 2 hits with a double and scored a run and handled 11 chances in the field without an error. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) hit a triple, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs and threw a runner out at the plate. C Evan Eckberg (31-3.5) had 2 hits with a triple and an RBI. It was his 5th triple of the season, marking a new career high in only 58 at bats. SS Tom Nelson (20-6.6) hit a triple and drew a walk and scored 2 runs. 1B Tom Duncan (22-6.6) had 3 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI.

For the Red Caps, manager/1B Pete Bucolo (39-4.1) had 4 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. LF Charlie Warner (33-9.2) hit yet another home run against us, his 5th of the year and 3rd against us. There were 2 runners on base. That makes 8 home runs against us for him in the 3 seasons I have been in Detroit. He has hit 10 during that span against everyone else combined. Charlie Morlock went 10 innings and got the win, #293 for his illustrious career.

Liberty League:
Indianapolis (6) at New York (9): Tom McDowell (23-8.0) (4-1) over Jimmy Euler (26-5.5) (2-3). 3B Ed Glass (27-4.5) had 3 hits with a double and a triple, scored a run and had 4 RBIs.

Pittsburgh (6) at Cleveland (7) in 10 innings: Artie Boucher (24-6.1) (2-0) in relief of Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) over Tom Adams (32-6.0) (2-5) in relief of Tom Lilly (27-6.4). Lilly had to leave with back spasms after making 1 pitch. They expect him to take about a week to recover. SS Dan White (27-5.1) went hitless, ending his consecutive game hitting streak at 23. Pedersen went 9 innings, allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2, but also had to leave the game with a sore ankle, They expect him to be okay in about 3 days or so. Cleveland scored 3 times in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game. SS Jesse Flanders (27-5.4) knocked in the winning run. For the Puddlers, 1B Tom Coponen (31-7.0) hit his 3rd home run of the year.

Grand National Association:
Providence (4) at Baltimore (5): Pop Yurkovich (35-5.6) (9-12) over Ed Hodges (27-3.2) (7-13). Yurkovich allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Only once before today had Yurky walked less than 3 in a game and that time he walked 2.

St. Louis (10) at Kansas City (11): Dave Hendrich (24-6.0) (2-0) in relief of AL McClaughry (23-5.6) over Con Arnold (23-6.3) (3-5). The Cowboys scored 3 times in the bottom of the 9th to win. The final run scored on an error. 3B Al Sarbacker (26-4.8) hit his 2nd home run of the season.

Milwaukee (2) at Chicago (7): Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (14-10) over Wiley Steel (25-5.6) (4-5). Seguin allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. RF Candy Simpson (28-6.8) hit a home run.

After today's games, no team in the major leagues had a winning or losing streak longer than 1 game, except Brooklyn, who has won 2 in a row, but did not play today.

Manager Elmer Higgins (41-6.4) brings his Bourbons to Detroit today to begin a 4 game series. The 1st time we met, we won 2 of 3 in Louisville a month ago. They are 3rd in runs scored with 6.9 per game (Detroit is still last, but still climbing with 6.1). They are 3rd in runs allowed with 6.4 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 5.0). A very impressive start to their inaugural season.

Louisville Bourbons (23-21 .523 5.5 GB in 4th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (29-16 .644 1st place)

William McLeod, Lou. (28-5.6) (R 11-7 4.17 9.3-3.8-3.2 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 14-4 2.63 8.9-1.3-3.4)

Lost - 8 to 3

We were just beaten badly in this one. These Bourbons look like a real team and no pushover like they should be. We are now 3-6 in our last 9 games.

In 8 innings, Townley allowed 17 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit.
Ed Seelow (27-4.5) pitched the 9th inning and set them down in order, striking out a batter.

McLeod gave us 8 hits, 6 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run.

We made 2 errors and Louisville made 1. The Bourbons have the 2nd best defense in the Liberty League.

3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) hit a double and drew a walk. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) hit his 5th home run of the year, walked twice and had 2 RBIs. CF Tom Panozzo (22-2.0) had 2 hits.

For the Bourbons, CF Pat Womack (26-6.3), who we gave to them in a trade, had 4 hits with a double, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. RF John Rodgers (35-4.4) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Our old shortstop, 2B Sam Swanger (34-4.8) had 2 hits and an RBI.

Liberty League:
Indianapolis (10) at New York (6): Sal DeVaux (32-3.5) (5-7) over Jack Roberts (35-6.1) (4-14).

Boston (8) at Cincinnati (15): John Stevens (30-8.2) (10-9) over William Little (26-6.0) (8-9). RF Fleet Wilcox (30-4.9) hit his 9th home run of the year and is now tied for the League lead. For the Red Caps, LF Charlie Warner (33-9.2) had 4 hits and had 2 RBIs. Manager/1B Pete Bucolo (39-4.1) broke a bone in his hand when he got beaned and will miss about a month.

Grand National Association:
Providence (1) at Baltimore (8): Tom Wilmarth (27-5.4) (12-11) over Ed Wison (26-7.3) (6-10). Wilmarth allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. 3B Phil Lane (26-7.4) hit his 3rd home run of the year.

St. Louis (4) at Kansas City (7): Lew Burnett (26-4.5) (12-10) over Fred Barrow (35-4.7) (11-10). Burnett allowed 8 hits, 4 walks and struck out 3. C Pop Buck (33-5.2) hit a home run. Rookie LF Pat Matthews (24-5.1) extended his hitting streak to 25 games. For the Terriers, 3B Jim Hodzic (36-7.0) cracked a bone in his foot and will miss at least 3 weeks.

Brooklyn (13) at Omaha (12): Al Green (24-3.8) (12-11) over Bill Hamilton (29-5.4) (4-2) in relief of Lee Sprague (27-3.5). Brooklyn broke the tie with a run in the top of the 9th. C Billy Boblett (29-5.4) had 4 hits with a double and his 3rd home run of the season, stole a base and had 3 RBIs. For the Mutuals, rookie CF Dave Todd (22-5.5) had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and had 5 RBIs.

Milwaukee (7) at Chicago (5): Zachary Buchanan (26-4.0) (12-10) over Pony Stanley (24-6.2) (10-7). LF Ted Steeves (25-4.2) hit his 3rd home run of the year.

RF Joe Kraus (30-7.9) is ready to play, so I shipped CF Willie Kirby (25-2.1) off to Syracuse. You know, whenever I contemplate whether I should sign a player or not, I figure I can get along with anyone if they can play. But then, when I actually have to spend time around some of these less-than-admirable characters, I wonder what the heck was I thinking? I don't want these bums on my team! So, I sent CF Tom Panozzo (22-2.0) to Syracuse, too and have brought CF Fred Bianco (28-6.9) back.

A lot of the other players were complaining about Panozzo and Kirby and Panozzo was complaining about everybody else. I think he's gonna be great hitter. Heck! He already is a great hitter! But he won't be hitting here.

Both of those bums will be traded this winter. And if you can keep a secret, P Lou Townley (25-3.4) and C Evan Eckberg (31-3.5) are in their last seasons as Wolverines, too. That is, providing I am back myself.

Louisville Bourbons (24-21 .533 4.5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (29-17 .630 1st place)

Count Childs, Lou. (31-3.1) (R 8-8 4.66 9.6-4.3-3.4 H-BB-K/9) vs. Ed Bush, Det. (27-5.3) (R 11-7 3.70 8.2-2.6-2.7)

Childs shut us out the last time we faced him.

Lost - 13 to 7

Bush was just awful and has been awful for 6 starts in a row. Besides the booty he gave up to the Bourbons listed below, he threw 4 wild pitches and beaned 3 batters. You can add Bush's name to the list of those who will be on the trading block this winter.

In 8 innings, Bush allowed 11 runs on 11 hits and 2 walks and struck out 2.
Ed Seelow (27-4.5) pitched the 9th inning and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, though he did strike out 2. He's on the midnight train to Georgia (though he will transfer to a train heading towards Syracuse before he makes it to the Peach State).

Childs gave us 10 hits, 5 walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had 2 hits, a walk, got beaned and scored a run.

We made 3 errors and Louisville made 2.

CF Al Lewis (21-9.1) had 2 hits with a triple and a walk, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. He is not well-suited to center, but to get all the bats I want in the lineup, he has to play there. Next year, he will be the everyday left fielder and LF Ben Smith (28-6.7) will be finding a new home. 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) had 2 hits and an RBI. SS Tom Nelson (20-6.6) had 2 hits and a walk, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. C Jimmy Babcock (30-6.9) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

RF Fleet Wilcox (30-4.9) for the Reds and CF Pat Stafford (26-5.4) of the Red Caps each hit their 10th home run of the season to stay tied for the League lead.

Grand National Association:

Despite all these issues, the Wiedergangers are still first in the Liberty League. They might stumble over the Blue Hats and the Whiskeys once in a while, but still the sum of all those scruffy parts amounts to more than on any other team.

But can't they stop losing to the Creepy Count, finally!?

It's time to see what our 1st pick from the last B Leagues draft can do. Al Rice (22-7.6) has arrived from Syracuse where he had a 11-4 record with a 2.31 ERA. He cannot be any worse than Ed Bush (27-5.3) has been of late. For those who have forgotten, Rice won the pitching Triple Crown in the Southern League (B) last year. This year he is leading the International League (A) in ERA and strikeouts and is 2nd in fewest walks per 9 innings. We'll let him spend the day today getting acclimated to his new surroundings and tomorrow we will throw him into the fire.

P Ed Seelow (27-4.5) and his 6.43 ERA were sent to Syracuse in exchange.

Louisville Bourbons (25-21 .543 3.5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (29-18 .617 1st place)

William McLeod, Lou. (28-5.6) (R 12-7 4.12 9.2-3.9-3.3 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 14-5 2.88 9.4-1.4-3.4)

Last time these 2 met, Townley gave up 17 hits.

Won - 6 to 5

With the game tied at 5 apiece, 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) led off the bottom of the 9th with a walk. With 1-out LF Ben Smith (28-6.7) doubled and Boullion came home, but found the ball waiting on him there for the 2nd out. However, Smith went to 3rd on the throw, from where he scored on a passed ball to win the game.

Townley allowed 8 hits (all singles), 2 walks and struck out 5.

McLeod gave us 10 hits, 4 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit.

We made 2 errors and Louisville made 3.

2B Jocko Cole (25-6.1) had 4 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. He is hitting over .400 for June. SS Tom Nelson (20-6.6) continued his amazing run with a double and a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. He is now hitting .421 for the 1st 19 games of his career.

For the Bourbons, 1B Pete Hinde (31-7.9) had 3 hits, stole a base and scored 2 runs. LF Jack Wallace (34-7.5) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Liberty League:

Pittsburgh (12) at New York (8): Tom Adams (32-6.0) (3-5) over Jack Roberts (35-6.1) (4-15). 1B Tom Coponen (31-7.0) had 2 hits with his 4th home run of the year and had 4 RBIs.

Indianapolis (5) at Cleveland (7): Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (8-13) over Sal DeVaux (32-3.5) (5-8). For the Hoosiers, last year's Rookie of the Year Ed Slonim (24-8.5) hurt his back and will miss a couple of weeks. He has only played 24 games this season due to a multitude of injuries.

Boston (5) at Cincinnati (25): John Stevens (30-8.2) (11-9) over Charlie Morlock (37-6.7) (8-11). Morlock only made it through 4 innings, allowing 13 runs. Will he be able to hang on until he gets 7 more wins to make it to 300? Manager/LF Silver Borresen (33-6.9) had 5 hits with a triple, scored 5 runs and had 2 RBIs. RF Fleet Wilcox (30-4.9) had 3 hits with 2 home runs and 2 walks, scored 5 runs and had 4 RBIs. He now leads the Liberty League all alone with 12 home runs. 1B Willie Burton (32-8.5) had 4 hits with a triple and his 5th home run of the year, drew a walk, scored 5 runs and had 6 RBIs. Rookie 2B Ed Kent (23-3.6) had 4 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Rookie SS Tub Saslow (22-5.8) had 4 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs.

Grand National Association:
Baltimore (7) at Omaha (6): Tom Wilmarth (27-5.4) (13-11) over Lee Sprague (27-3.4) (11-13). Sprague only allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2 but Omaha made 9 errors.

Milwaukee (8) at Chicago (5): Zachary Buchanan (26-4.0) (13-10) over Pete Rinehart (28-6.2) (5-8). Buchanan allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. For the Colts, rookie 3B Stub Nelson (25-7.1) hurt his ankle and will miss about 3 weeks.

Louisville Bourbons (25-22 .532 4.5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (30-18 .625 1st place)

Count Childs, Lou. (31-3.1) (R 9-8 4.68 9.6-4.4-3.2 H-BB-K/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (22-7.6) (R 11-4 2.31 9.1-1.5-3.9 in A Ball)

Rice makes his major league debut today.

Won - 4 to 1

Rice allowed 6 hits (all singles), 1 walk and struck out 2. He only needed 91 pitched to complete the game.

Childs gave us 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2.

We made 1 error and Louisville made 3.

CF Fred Bianco (28-6.9) had a hit and scored a run and threw out 2 runners on the bases, one at home. SS Tom Nelson (20-6.6) had 2 more hits and an RBI. C Jimmy Babcock (30-6.9) had 3 hits and a walk and 2 RBIs.

Liberty League:
Indianapolis (8) at Cleveland (9) in 12 innings: Henry Rawls (33-4.3) (9-10) over Joe Osborne (29-3.0) (0-6) in relief of Jimmy Euler (26-5.5). Both teams scored a run in the 11th. The winning run scored on an error. For the Hoosiers, rookie RF Fred Boss (24-6.0) hit a home run.

Pittsburgh (9) at New York (2): Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (9-7) over Tom McDowell (23-8.0) (4-3). Mathews allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. RF Joe Coffey (31-5.2) hit his 5th home run of the season. C Bumpus Dowdy (37-7.2) hit his 2nd.

Grand National Association:
Providence (7) at Brooklyn (8): Al Green (24-3.8) (13-11) over Ed Wison (26-7.3) (6-11). Rookie 1B Fred Collins (23-5.2) hit a double and a home run, stole a base and had 4 RBIs. Rookie SS Ed Cheney (23-7.8) sprained his thumb and will miss 2 to 3 weeks.

Baltimore (7) at Omaha (5): Pop Yurkovich (35-5.6) (10-12) over Tom Lee (29-6.0) (9-6).

Milwaukee (1) at St. Louis (5): Jimmy Richards (24-0.9) (1-0) in relief of Ted Ryther (33-4.3) over Freddy Wood (31-6.3) (11-12). Ryther had to leave in the 5th inning with a tender elbow. He should be fine in a week or so, if he does not pitch. Richards pitched 4.2 shutout innings of relief and allowed 1 hit and 2 walks without striking anyone out. Editor's Note: Richards has the lowest Nice Guy Index score of any baseball player who has ever lived, so far. If you are wondering what the personality looks like, his Leader Ability, Loyalty and Work Ethic are all Very Low, his Desire for a Winner is Low, His Intelligence is High, and his Greed is Very High.

Owner Frank Pope (63-5.4) of the Milwaukee Brewers replaced manager Marshall Hutt (42-4.2) this morning with Merrill Baker (41-6.4). Baker has never managed before. As a player, he was an outfielder who never played above the low minors.

Manager Erastus Garrett (38-6.9) and his hapless Hoosiers are in town to begin a 3 game series today. They have been playing a little better since Garrett took over, going 9-14. We beat them 3 of 4 in Indianapolis back in the middle of May the first time we met. They are 6th in runs scored with 6.3 per game (Detroit is still last with 6.0). They are last in runs allowed with 8.0 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 5.2).

Indianapolis Hoosiers (19-31 .380 12.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (31-18 .633 1st place)

Sal DeVaux, Ind. (32-3.5) (R 5-8 5.07 11.2-4.1-2.5 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 15-5 2.98 9.4-1.4-3.5)

Although Townley is 6-3 in his last 9 starts, his ERA has risen by over a full run.

Won - 9 to 2

Each player in the lineup scored 1 and only 1 run.

Townley allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. At bat, he walked and scored a run.

We had 10 hits and made 4 errors (all by 2B Jocko Cole (25-6.1)). Indianapolis also made 4.

CF Al Lewis (21-9.1) led off with his 2nd home run of the season. 3B Sam Boullion (27-4.8) had 2 hits, was hit by a pitch (right after Lewis homered, which had our players all do some posturing, but nothing came of it) and scored a run. LF Ben Smith (28-6.7) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had 3 RBIs and threw a runner out at the plate. RF Fred Bianco (28-6.9) had 3 hits with a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Liberty League:
Louisville (3) at Cleveland (2): William McLeod (28-5.6) (13-8) over Ed Pedersen (25-5.1) (9-14). McLeod allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. Pedersen allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Cleveland made 6 errors to 1 for Louisville.

Boston (4) at New York (5): Tom McDowell (23-8.0) (4-5) over Charlie Morlock (37-6.7) (8-12). McDowell allowed 10 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. He hit a 2-run triple. Morlock allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out no one.

Pittsburgh (7) at Cincinnati (14): John Stevens (30-8.2) (12-9) over Tom Lilly (27-6.4) (8-9). Lilly, in his 1st start in a week due to back spasms, had to leave in the 5th with a sore shoulder. They think he'll be okay with another week off. RF Fleet Wilcox (30-4.9) had 3 hits with 2 triples and a walk, scored 3 runs and had 4 RBIs. He has a hit in 25 straight games, now. Rookie 2B Ed Kent (23-3.6) had 4 hits with his 2nd home run of the year, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had 4 RBIs. For the Puddlers, C Wilson Wendling (26-4.1) hit his 4th home run of the season. LF Billy Galloway (26-5.3) is going to miss 3 weeks with a pulled muscle.

Grand National Association:
Providence (5) at Brooklyn (4): Ed Wison (26-7.3) (7-11) over Al Green (24-3.8) (13-12). Wison allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3.

Baltimore (8) at Omaha (4): Bill McGee (29-7.9) (1-1) over Lee Sprague (27-3.5) (12-14). McGee allowed 11 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2.

Milwaukee (7) at St. Louis (8): Con Arnold (23-6.3) (4-5) over Zachary Buchanan (26-4.0) (13-11). Rookie 1B Ed Zarnoch (25-4.1) hit his 2nd home run of the year. For the Brewers, RF Ed Capps (24-6.1) hit his 6th home run of the season.

Chicago (12) at Kansas City (13) in 11 innings: Lew Burnett (26-4.5) (13-11) in relief of Al McClaughry (23-5.6) over Pat Seguin (23-4.4) (15-12). C Pop Buck (33-5.2) knocked in the winning run. He also hit his 2nd home run of the season. RF Tommy Dyer (29-3.8) had 2 hits with a double and a walk and scored 4 runs, including the winning one. 2B Jim McCarthy (25-7.5) had 5 hits with a home run, stole a base and had 3 RBIs. For the Colts, RF Candy Simpson (28-6.8) hit his 2nd home run of the year.

The Providence Grays did not improve any under Pat Ross (30-5.4), so owner Mike Haak (59-6.7) has shipped him off to A Ball and handed the reins of the team to P Bill Henson (30-6.5). Henson's horrible pitching is a large reason the team is not playing well, but most observers agree that if Haak refuses to pay the salary of a full-time manager, then Henson is probably the best choice for the job among the players.

We got some bad news on SS Al Shaffer (26-5.6). It appears he is not mending as quickly as anticipated and it will be at least another month before he will be able to play.

Indianapolis Hoosiers (19-32 .373 13.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (32-18 .640 1st place)

Jimmy Euler, Ind. (26-5.5) (R 2-4 3.51 10.7-3.8-3.0 H-BB-K/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (22-7.6) (R 1-0 1.00 6.0-1.0-2.0)

Won - 4 to 3

Rice allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run.

Euler gave us 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. We have had exactly 10 hits as a team for 5 straight games.

We made 2 errors and Indianapolis made 5.

CF Al Lewis (21-9.1) hit a triple and scored a run. So far, he is looking worse in center than I thought. We'll give him a little longer to get himself settled out there, but not much longer. 2B Jocko Cole (25-6.1) had 2 hits with a double, stole 2 bases, scored a run and had an RBI. C Evan Eckberg (31-3.5) hit a double. 1B Tom Duncan (22-6.6) had 2 hits with a triple, but messed up his ankle and is going to be out for the better part of 2 months. I sent for 1B George House (28-4.3) to come here from Syracuse to sit on our bench. RF Joe Kraus (30-7.9) had 2 hits with an RBI and maybe is finally getting into shape after the injury.

Liberty League:
Louisville (2) at Cleveland (5): Henry Rawls (33-4.3) (10-10) over Count Childs (31-3.1) (9-10). Rawls allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out no one. Pedersen allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Cleveland made 6 errors to 1 for Louisville.

Boston (16) at New York (4): William Little (26-6.0) (9-11) over Tom McDowell (23-8.0) (5-4). Little allowed 8 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. 2B Mike Stables (31-7.1) had 4 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 3 runs and had 4 RBIs. 1B Ed Tummino (25-5.8) hit his 3rd home run of the season.

Pittsburgh (5) at Cincinnati (6): Charlie Branham (27-4.2) (15-9) over Whitey Mathews (24-4.1) (9-8). With the game tied at 5 in the bottom of the 9th, rookie CF Ed Robling (24-7.3) led off with his 3rd double of the day and manager/LF Silver Borresen (33-6.9) doubled to win the game. Branham allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. The Reds have now won 6 in a row.

Holiday Double-Headers!

We begin a 3 game series with manager Jesse Courtney (38-5.1) and his Puddlers with a double-header today. After this series, we will all get on a train together and make for Pittsburgh where we will play 3 more. We are 2-0 against them on the season, sweeping the Decoration Day double-header in Pittsburgh. They are 4th in runs scored with 6.6 per game (Detroit is up to 7th with 6.1!!). They are 2nd in runs allowed with 5.8 per game (Detroit is still and ever #1 with 5.0).

Game 1
Pittsburgh Puddlers (23-23 .500 8 GB in 4th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (34-18 .654 1st place)

Whitey Mathews, Pitt. (24-4.1) (L 9-8 3.80 10.4-2.9-2.3 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Townley, Det. (25-3.4) (R 16-5 2.89 9.1-1.4-3.6)

Lost - 11 to 1

This game took so long because of all the runs and the weather was not looking nice, so the 2nd game was canceled.

Townley allowed 18 (!!) hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. 7 of the hits went for extra bases.

Mathews gave us 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI.

We made 2 errors and Pittsburgh made 3.

2B Jocko Cole (25-6.1) hit a double, but came up lame and will miss at least 6 weeks with a sore knee. I sent for IF Russell Gardner (33-6.4) to return from Syracuse. LF Ben Smith (28-6.7) had 2 hits. C Jimmy Babcock (30-6.9) had 2 hits and an RBI.

For the Puddlers, 2B Dan White (27-5.1) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, stole a base, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. RF Joe Coffey (31-5.2) continued his dominance over Townley. He had 4 hits with 2 doubles and a triple, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. He is now hitting .373 in 67 at bats against Townley. However, he pulled a muscle and will miss the next 6 weeks. 3B Adam Trombley (33-6.8) had 3 hits with 2 triples, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs.

Liberty League:
