The Milwaukee Brewers have turned their back on disco in favor of left-handed pitching.

Milwaukee dealt recent draft pick "Disco" Danny Ford to the New York Mets for left-handed pitching prospect Mike Flanagan.

The curious thing about the deal is that the Mets passed Ford in the first round of the recent June amateur draft. Flanagan turned out to be New York's selection, the sixth overall pick. The 22-year-old Manchester, New Hampshire native, however, had yet to pitch since being assigned to Class-A ball.

Ford, meanwhile, was tearing up A-ball for Milwaukee. The 22-year-old Los Angeles native was batting .342 with seven home runs and 38 RBIs in 40 games. Ford was the second-round pick of the Brewers.

"I've just got to have someone named Disco on my team," said Mets' GM Bryan S.

Looking to get back into the game quickly, the Cincinnati Reds have thrown down a pair of aces.

Currently residing in third place in the Joy in Mudville National League West, Cincinnati bolstered itself for the stretch run by acquiring pitchers Fergie Jenkins and Dave McNally from the Chicago Cubs.

The move is a bold stroke by Reds' management. Cincinnati, 60-46 and 7.5 games behind first-place Los Angeles, already boasts one of the NL's top offenses. The additions of the right-handed Jenkins and the left-handed McNally instantly strengthens the Cincinnati pitching staff.

Chicago got five players in return for the two veteran arms. At the major league level, the Cubs acquired pitcher Joe Coleman and first baseman/outfielder Willie Montanez. Chicago also landed minor leaguer prospects Bill Stein, Paul Reuschel and Greg Minton. Minton was the Reds' first-round pick in the recent June amateur draft.

Jenkins, 30, holds a lifetime 95-91 record. The right-hander is a two-time 20-game winner. Jenkins was 16-9 with a 3.46 ERA in 28 starts with Chicago this season.

McNally, 31, is a two-time All-Star selection. The left-hander won the 1970 American League Cy Young Award with Baltimore. McNally was 14-8 with a 3.19 ERA with the Cubs this season. His career record is 82-63.

The Reds have also decided to go with a five-man pitching rotation. Cincinnati's arms line up as Jenkins, Gary Nolan, Don Gullett, McNally and Jim Rooker.

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old Coleman was part of Cincinnati's 1971 JIM championship team. The right-hander won 19 games a year ago, but was only 8-10 with a 4.83 ERA this season with the Reds. Coleman is 74-66 in his career.

Montanez was originally with Philadelphia. He came to Cincinnati in a multi-player trade last season. A career .272 hitter, the 26-year-old Puerto Rican was batting .280 with eight home runs and 50 RBIs in 411 at-bats for the Reds. He will likely see action at first base and in the outfield for the Cubs.

Both Stein and Reuschel are 27 years old. Stein was a second-round pick by the Reds in 1971. Reuschel, the brother of Montreal starter Rick Reuschel, was a third-round selection by Cincinnati this season. He is a native of Camp Point, Illinois.

Minton, 23, was the 19th overall pick in June's amateur draft.

All three minor leaguers will report to the Cubs' Triple-A farm team in Princeton.

In other news, the Reds have sent down relief pitcher Craig Skok and called up the recently acquired Dave Moates.

[Joy in Mudville]

The Joy in Mudville may have just become the NBA.

In one of the most complicated trades in league history, six players and one to be named later along with a draft pick have changed hands between three teams.

The deal began with Texas shipping relief pitcher Darold Knowles, a second-round draft pick and a player to be named later to Pittsburgh for minor league outfielder Ben Oglivie.

The player to be named later is expected to be Rangers' outfielder Hal McRae, who is currently out for the season with an injury.

The Pirates then sent the draft pick along with minor leaguers Ed Ott and Ozzy Osborn (not that one, but a bat man nonetheless) to San Diego. The Padres then shipped short stop Mark Belanger and outfielder Paul Blair to Texas.

Knowles was 1-0 in very limited action with Texas. The 32-year-old veteran will give Pittsburgh a left-handed bullpen arm.

Oglivie, 25, is a two-time minor league all-star. The left-handed hitting outfielder was the No. 22 overall selection by Pittsburgh in the 1970 amateur draft.

The 23-year-old Ott and the 28-year-old Osborn were each third-round picks by the Pirates. Each will be assigned to the minors in the Padre system.

Belanger, 30, was batting .231 with four home runs and 27 RBIs in 251 at-bats with San Diego. He will back up Toby Harrah at short for the Rangers.

Blair, 30, was hitting .260 with one homer and seven RBIs in 96 at-bats for San Diego. Known for his solid glove work, he will provide Harrah with key rest in the Texas heat down the season's stretch.

Both Belanger and Blair once played in the American League with Baltimore.

Dealer Dan is back and trying his best to get the Texas Rangers another Joy in Mudville American League West flag.

Dan S, noted GM of the Rangers, sent inconsistent starting pitcher Luis Tiant and first baseman/outfielder Rusty Staub to Atlanta for right-handed pitcher Jim Palmer Tuesday afternoon.

This trade comes on the heels of a four-team whirlwind deal that remakes the Rangers in their quest to track down the front-running Minnesota Twins. Third-place Texas is 51-54, 8.5 games behind the Twins. The Rangers have won the past two AL West crowns.

A year after winning 21 games and capturing the AL Comeback Player Award, Tiant was just 10-16 with a 3.64 ERA in 28 starts for Texas. The 33-year-old Cuban is 49-69 in his career.

Like Tiant, Palmer has also struggled. The 28-year-old right-hander was 10-9 with a 3.01 ERA in 29 starts with Atlanta. Palmer returns to the AL where he once pitched for Baltimore. A lifetime 72-72 pitcher, Palmer does have playoff experience as a member of the 1970 Orioles.

Staub will likely split time at first base and in the outfield for the Braves. The 30-year-old left-handed hitter played for the National League Montreal Expos prior to being traded to Texas. Staub was batting .235 with two home runs and 38 RBIs in 371 at-bats with the Rangers this year. Staub is a career .282 hitter.
