Was working on some White Sox history stuff and came across this:

1901 Gold Glove: Stirling LaFreniere at RF
1912 Gold Glove: Stirling LaFreniere at C

The 11 year gap between first and second award would be odd on it's own, but Gold Glove at two positions... and as different as C and RF.

I haven't studied the Gold Glove list very hard (other than HOF discussions and Sox stuff). Does anyone recall anything as oddball as this?

One more useless thing:

1909 R1 #3 - Andrew Murphy by CHA
1910 R1 #1 - Jean-Francois "Flaky" Arsenault by CHA
1911 R1 #2 - Genaro "Tito" Nunez by CHA

I have to think that's way up there for best three year run of #1 picks. Of course you have to be awfully bad to be drafting that high.

Tito would be traded along with another player on 04/11/12 for the Red Sox. The White Sox had 28 year old Jed Burke at 2B. Maybe the White Sox should have moved Jed over to 3B as an IF of Jed, Flaky, Tito and Hutchins probably would have been one of the best ever.

An equally bizarre fact is that LaFreniere only had 2 season with 500+ AB's... guess which ones... yup, 1901 and 1912... In 1902 he had 423, but didn't have more than 234 in any other season... Winning GG's at C and RF would be acceptable of an athletic player like Craig Biggo, but to have won the C GG late in his career instead of starting as a C and moving to the OF is maybe the wackiest thing....

Well, it's history now... surely you can come up with an interesting explanation

Top Starters:
SP Mitchell Haynam (19-16, 3.63)

3B Eric Teeuw (.328, 67 RBI)

LF Al Arsenault (.295, 16 HR, 87 RBI)
CF Howard Sheridan (.277, 21 HR, 86 RBI)

SP Hale Sullivan (AAA)

RF Ben Hargey (AAA)

I've got my fingers crossed that having the 2nd best minors system in the bigs will eventually cause the Red Sox to be fruitful by the time I take over as GM. Here's hoping they don't make any stupid trades before then!

Well... I wouldn't hold my breath. They've picked very high in four out of the last five drafts. If you look at those first two, I'd be very, very, very worried:

1933 - 7th: Drafted CF Lee Friedman with the 1st round, 3rd overall pick in the 1934 draft.

26 years old. .337/.396/.433/.829 in about 472 PA in TWB. Medicore defense in CF. Traded on 7/11/1936 to the Bees with P Joe Threatt for 1B Jessie Holt. Then traded to the White Sox last year for 3B Hal Dumais. Holt is now a 29 year old 1B of middling achivement. He should be hitting for more power than he's flashed.

He'd be pretty old by the time you take over, but this is still a brutal deal. If you're going to trade a R1#3 pick, you either want to get a superstar to help you now or get *younger* and better.

1934 - 4th: Drafted RF Chi "The Light" Hung with the 1st round, 7th overall pick in the 1935 draft.

20 years old. .289/.328/.372/.700 in about 268 PA in TWB. .343/.385/.490/.875 and .394/.443/.549/.992 as a 17 and 18 year old in the minors. Fair defense at 3B, medicore at C. Traded on 4/17/1935 with P Julius Corbett to the Yankees for LF Donovan Argot. Argot is now a 35 year old LF and has been a horrid flop in Beantown. Brutal in 1935 playing fulltime, then tossed on the bench the last two years.

The logic behind the deal is that the Sox had 21 year old Tequila Allen holding down 3B for them at the time. Young Tequila seems to have regressed since then, looking like a platoon hitter. The logic of the deal was correct - either Chi or Tequila had to go. Tequila is a poor defensive 3B (bad range though a great gun), but would have made for a horrid SS if moved there. Chi looks like a bug reach of the Sox moved him to Catcher. Still... horrid deal as the Sox got nothing back for him.

Since then, they've yet to tade away their top picks:

1935 - 8th: Drafted CF Jack Zenisek with the 1st round, 1st overall pick in the 1936 draft.

20 years old. #6 ranked prospect in all of TWB. Terrific defense in RF and very good in CF, though a poor arm. Tore up A ball after being draft to the tune of .295/.443/.421/.863, struggled a but after being promoted to AA. Came back with a very solid AAA campaign in 1937 to the tune of .300/.396/.445/.840. Power looks like it will develop, and the batting eye is outstanding. Grade A prospect...

1936 - 8th: Drafted C Cecil Marziani with the 1st round, 2nd overall pick in the 1937 draft.

19 years old. #5 ranked prospect in all of TWB. Arm is pretty so-so, but range is off the charts at C. May be a gold glove candidate if the arm improves. Super strong A ball campaign with a .326/.448/.497/.945 line, despite missing more than a month with a bad hip. Looks like he may grab the Sox catching job in a few years and hold it for a long time.

1937 - 8th: Drafted RF Ben Hargey with the 1st round, 1st overall pick in the 1938 draft.

22 years old. #4 ranked prospect in all of TWB. Batting talent ratings are exceptional already. Starting at AAA, looks to be the heir to legendary Tyrell Chestnut. His age is a bit of a worry - 22 years old isn't young for a R1#1 pick. He'll be in his early 30s when TWB goes "live". But he actually looks good enough to roll out in the majors *now*. I hate to say it, but the Sox probably should think of trading Chestnut. While probably the greatest Red Sox to date, he does turn 39 in late August.

The Sox other top prospect listed by Matt was SP Hale Sullivan. 2nd round, 27th pick by the White Sox back in 1936. Doesn't really look like a great prospect to me.

Catcher Chuck Rauch is the #13 prospect overall, a 23 year old HR&BB hitter with a great arm. He's on the major league roster. Perhaps the worst thing that could happen to the Sox would be for him to get on 20 HR pace or more, and current management decide to trade Cecil Marziani. They should be thinking in the other direction - showcase Rauch for a season or two while Marziani develops, hope that he flashes 20+ HR and 75+ BB numbers, and then trade *Rauch* for another prospect when Marziani is ready to go.

Mets - one of the problems you might have is that if the Sox keep their talent, they might turn into a good team for the next decade and you'll take over with a bunch of very good players in their late 20s and early-to-mid 30s. That will help you compete right off the bat, but it's also going to keep the Sox from drafting those Grade A high picks in the draft between now and then. Probably the very best thing that could happen to any of us owners would be for our teams to have a run in last place from about 1940-42 so the team gets those high picks.

I get the feeling my White Sox went through the cycle a bit early - they're getting reasonably good right now and aren't going to be getting good picks for a while. I suspect that if they take a fall, it's going to be in the mid-40s... or right when I'm taking them over.

The amazing thing about these Yankees is that even while winning, they have stayed young. I did a post on the Cubs a while back, and pointed out that the Yanks are actually a *younger* team than the Cubs are. Things like that great trade for Chi Hung help. Chi may only develop into a "solid" 3B, but if he does, he's still young and it would give them a lot of years of solid play at 3B where they don't have to worry about filling a hole. Or he may develop into an all star.

I suspect that it's going to be harder to do those "Trade a Vet for a Propect" deals when the game goes live. Though maybe players will get into that Win Now! mode and make nutty deals.

April 1938

The Yankees began the season by sweeping Detroit, and they pulled off 2 other 3-game sweeps this month. One came against the Red Sox, but the other was their first meeting with Washington. The Senators took 2-of-3 in a later series, but that set the tone as New York leads the AL at the end of April and the Senators are in 6th place. However, the Yankees look far from invincible as their team average is just .273 and their team ERA is 4.13.

The Cubs fell behind early in the NL race after losing 5 straight games early in the month, including a sweep by rival Brooklyn. However, they ended the month on a 7-game winning streak, and they now lead Brooklyn by 1.5 games. The bad news for the Cubs is their offense is struggling with a pitiful .264 average, but on the brighter side, their pitching leads the majors with an impresive 3.19 ERA. Brooklyn looks even better statistically with a .311 average (2nd in the majors to the Cardinals' .313) and a 3.83 ERA, which is 2nd only to the Cubs among all major league teams. The Phillies seem to have taken the loss of manager "Dark Horse" Allen hard, as they began the season with the worst record in the majors.

American League-Pitcher of the Month:
George Cone (SLA)!
He had a record of 6-0 in 6 games started, with an ERA of 1.76.

American League-Batter of the Month:
Quenton Misisca (DET)!
He batted .398 in 98 AB, with 8 homers and 22 RBI.

National League-Pitcher of the Month:
Otto "Kaiser" Kahle (BSN)!
He had a record of 6-0 in 6 games started, with an ERA of 2.18 and 2 shutouts.

National League-Batter of the Month:
Fred "Froggy" Borgert (NYG)!
He batted .349 in 86 AB, with 9 homers and 24 RBI.

The Red Sox have made some lousy deals throughout history, I believe... maybe metsgeek will have to clean house in the front office when he gets there....

From 1901 til now and even after owners take over in '46, the ammy draft is only 3 rds... This means prospects will be vauled even more highly, but also that prospects as low a 2-stars have a chance to get a cup-o-coffee in the bigs... Not sure just how that will affect trading.

Here is this year's Record Watch:

Career HR
1. 340 - W. Schwarz
2. 312 - Q. Misisca*
3. 287 - T. Kinnear*
4. 280 - O. Vancini*

Misisca dropped down to 23 HR last season after hitting a combined 60 HR in the prior two years. He's also 37 this season. 8 HR in April is a good start for him on the road to at least grabbing hold of the record before Oscar takes it from him.

60 HR to tie and 61 HR to break... The Kid hit 59 last year. Oscar *can* do it. It will be interesting to see if he hits 61 whether Misisca beats him to the record.

Other Record Watches:

Career RBIs
1. 1693 - J. Falise
2. 1649 - G. Zegri*
3. 1643 - B. Baum*

Old A's outfield mater Bull Zegri and Rabbi Baum fell off sharply last year. Baum was down to 31 RBI while Zegri was down to 37 RBI. In addition to playing poorly, Bull missed more two month with a broken hand, while Baum played his way out of the lineups of both the Giants and the Phills. They're going to need comeback years and some playing time.

I think I did a post a while back about some of the guys further on down the list who have good shots at this record in the coming years.

Career Doubles
1. 665 - C. Ditty
2. 660 - W. Kohse
3. 644 - G. Zegri*

Bull got 15 two baggers last year even with the injury. This one he might get with some playing time.

If Bull doesn't get the record, it's not going to be challenge for several years. Pops McAuliffe (461 at the age of 32) and Cookie Parrish (471 at 35 after missing nearly all of 1937) are the only players on the career leader board with a chance.

Career Wins
1. 359 - T. Lopresto
2. 344 - B. Allen*

The other Big One. Bourbon has knocked three off that already. If he doesn't get it this year, he'll get it next year. 49 wins the last two seasons. Another 20+ win season and he may start thinking about 400, though that still looks tough. Where ever he ends up, he's going to hold the record for while. Frank Smith is the one on pace to catch him. If Frank doesn't do it, it's going to be a long while.

Career Saves
1. 130 - P. Maisonet
2. 125 - D. Cisek*

Dale's plugging away at a clip of 10+ a year. He should hold it for a little while until saves start going up.

This is frightening. After a so-so start last April, Frank got fired up and went 20-1 from May through August. I hope for the NL hitters sake that Frank isn't peeved over Kaiser winning the POM award.

and:

Jimmy "The Schnozz" Ditty, CF, Yankees - Ditty hit .317 with 4 homeruns and 14 RBI.

I see Ping and Schnozz are getting playing time. Matt - how are the Yanks working out their OF glut of March, Ditty, Hung and Graham? Someone get hurt and things just worked out? Or is March or Moonlight on the bench?

Darn... I get the feeling Doc still hasn't cracked into the Sox lineup.

May 1938

Despite a 15-13 record in May, the Yankees managed to hold a lead in an American League that seems to be without a real championship-calibre team this season. The Browns have shown signs of life, going 15-12 and moving into 2nd place. Meanwhile, the White Sox, who are considered by many to be a better team than the Yanks, went 13-14.

The Browns were part of two interesting trades this month. They acquired the final remaining member of the Phillies' "Phantastic Phour," Terry Schukraft, giving nothing but shortstop Mitch Cole in return. With the franchise supposedly in dire financial straights, they then traded highly touted first base prospect Edward Rossi to the Reds in return for light-hitting but defensively gifted centerfielder Elvin Hoosier and a large sum of cash. A spokesman for the team claimed that the Browns were desperately trying to contend for a pennant they believe is "highly winnable" by acquiring Schukraft and Hoosier, who is an upgrade over Irv Seda in centerfield. Meanwhile, they acquired cash from the Reds in return for Rossi in hopes that the money will help cover the contracts of their two new veterans. This could be the team's best chance to win a pennant and increase interest in a team that has struggled mightily since its early heyday and has found it tough to fight off the more successful Cardinals in the battle for fans.

In the NL, the Cubs went 21-7 and opened up an impressive lead over Brooklyn. The Dodgers went just 15-13, falling 7.5 games back. The Bees did not do much better, going 16-13. Chicago's offense struggled this month, and no regular starter is hitting above .300. However, the team continues to score runs, thanks largely to power hitters like Dave "Red Fox" Arkless who has 16 dingers on the season. Their pitching staff continues to dominate like few others have. They have a 3.19 team ERA, and the 2nd best ERA in the majors is 4.04 by the cross-town White Sox.

American League-Pitcher of the Month:
Lewis Lamson (CHA)!
He had a record of 5-0 in 6 games started, with an ERA of 1.13 and 1 shutouts.
Oddly enough, he was traded last season for George Cone, who won last month's POTM.

American League-Batter of the Month:
Wolter "Boeken" Tjeenk-Willink (WSH)!
He batted .433 in 104 AB, with 7 homers and 27 RBI.

National League-Pitcher of the Month:
Chester Haines (PIT)!
He had a record of 5-0 in 5 games started, with an ERA of 1.76 and 2 shutouts.

National League-Batter of the Month:
Dave "Red Fox" Arkless (CHN)!
He batted .311 in 74 AB, with 10 homers and 23 RBI.

Jeronimo Arsenault, SP, Browns - Jeronimo returned to the majors this month, pitching 2 games out of the bullpen.

Al Arsenault, LF, Red Sox - Al hit .327 with 4 homeruns, 20 RBI and 20 runs scored.

Peyton "Flamethrower" Arana, SP, Cardinals - Arana went 1-6 with a 4.73 ERA.

William "Bill" Berry, RF, Indians - Bill hit .298 with 15 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Edward Rossi, 1B, Reds - Rossi was traded to the Reds in return for centerfielder Elvin Hoosier and a reportedly large sum of cash. The problem for him is that the Reds already have an emerging star in young first baseman Hank Faver.

John Skoropat, SP, Tigers - John was promoted to AAA where he went 2-2 with a 7.76 ERA. Perhaps Detroit is in too big of a hurry for pitching help at the major league level.

Way to go gramps! He's finally becoming the hitter I've always known he could be. I don't suspect he'll keep up this pace to this extent, but that's some fine work for two months. The Senators may be in 6th place, but they were back in the pack last season, too. This should be a tough race in the AL.

Darn... I get the feeling Doc still hasn't cracked into the Sox lineup.
Hung missed all of May, but he started 20 games in CF in April. Out of 52 team games, March has started 48 in LF and Graham 49 in RF. Ditty seems to be on the outs a little more, starting 27 games in CF with Hung out.

As for Doc, Asher's starting at 2B and Kubic at SS. That makes Doc 3rd on the depth chart with Kirkes the main backup SS vs RHP and Ahlberg vs LHP and at 2B, Henry is the main backup.

As for the record watches:

Career HR
1. 340 - W. Schwarz
2. 324 - Q. Misisca*
3. 297 - O. Vancini*
4. 295 - T. Kinnear*

Misisca hit just 4 in May, but 17 more is very attainable if he averages just 4 per month. Vancini has 17 and is on pace for 50, which would give Misisca even more of an edge at becoming #1, even if it only lasts for 1 year.

Career RBIs
1. 1693 - J. Falise
2. 1670 - G. Zegri*
3. 1643 - B. Baum*

Bull didn't get much playing time in April, splitting time in LF with Mule Beney. But in May, Bull was the primary LF, Mule moved to CF and Art Brandstetter moved from CF to RF, putting Gail Tarver on the bench. However, if he gets plenty of laying time, he should certainly break the record. He had 14 in May.

Hmmm... a Bull and a Mule on the same team... how strange.

Rabbi looks finished... He's hit .111 in just 18 AB... and at one-time I thought he had the best shot of becoming #1 all-time in hits... that was before injury and before Will Miller set the bar so high.

Career Doubles
1. 665 - C. Ditty
2. 660 - W. Kohse
3. 649 - G. Zegri*

He had 4 in May and 1 in part-time April... certainly within reach, but he needs to remain a starter.

Career Wins
1. 359 - T. Lopresto
2. 352 - B. Allen*

As I posted above, Allen should certinly get there, especially with the Bees playing well.

Career Saves
1. 130 - P. Maisonet
2. 128 - D. Cisek*

Cisek didn't get his 1st save of the season until May 10th. Although his ratings are still high, his ERA is 5.68 so far. He needs just 3 to break the record, but with the Browns starting pitching doing well, he may actually get fewer opportunities. The all-time saves leaders have tended to be on poorer teams, who have needed more late-game saving.

I suspect that it's going to be harder to do those "Trade a Vet for a Propect" deals when the game goes live. Though maybe players will get into that Win Now! mode and make nutty deals.

Holy crud! Hoosier turns 37 in June! A career .290/.340/.389/.730 hitter coming off of a pair of sub .700 OPS years! Rossi is 17, and the Browns have a declining 29 year old Bootleg Simard at 1B.

THEY'RE INSANE~! qusip should run down to the Browns offices and Juan Marichal them upside the head:

Trading away 17 year old prospects for old farts... this is going to be a hard few years for us owners to watch.

I guess I need to admit that Yanks Management knows what they're doing - having all that OF talent does let your whether injuries. There is a reason they've won all those World Titles.

I feel a little sorry for Henry - he lost his spot when he Fell Into The Void, with the Sox trading for talent. Of course I wouldn't be complaining if Doc had been the one to take advantage of it.

Yep, looks like Bull is going to do it barring an injury.

Pretty amazing. At one point Whiskey held the all-time hits record, and now his boy will hold the wins record. 8 wins already, he could really set it up high with another big season.

Can you save and link to the box scores when he ties and breaks the record, Matt?
