That's a great shot!!
I figured that's what it was with Hughes, but it's good to hear by people who watched him. I'm already looking forward to his next start ![]() As for Jeter, it's well known that he has trouble with inside pitches since he likes to lace the ball to the right side. Plus, he does crowd the plate. Both of those will equal a lot of HBP.

Still, my 2007 Yankees season life flashes before my eyes every time he gets hit in the hand, which seems to be quite often. That's one thing Proctor was good for, exacting revenge for transgressions like this, almost to a fault. |

The Yanks released Mike Myers this morning. Am I missing something?

With Myers gone, welcome to the bigs for Joba Chamberlain. I hope this is the shot in the arm for the bullpen they need.
Congrats to A-Rod and Godzilla on hitting their milestones at home over the weekend. I'm feeling it right now. The schedule is gonna get a bit tougher, but things are working well for the Yanks. Keep it up. |

BTW, WTF kind of name is "Joba"?
More importantly, doesn't he pronounce it "Jabba"? |

The really odd thing is that his ERA this year was pretty darned good: 2.66. This goes back to a comment that I made earlier; for relief pitchers ERA can be deceiving. In his case, it wasn't just a small amount of innings pitched; his 40 2/3 was just behind Bruney and F********h. He just did not do the lefty specialist job that he was on the staff to perform.

Newsday is wrong.
So what that lefthanders hit .301 against Myers. He wasn't giving up a lot of runs. A 2.66 ERA in 40 Innings isn't that small of a sample size. It's not 100 innings but it's right there with what a lot of relievers will get. No reason to call him ineffective but to find one for his demotion. |

He gave up a lot of runs, just the pitchers after him saved him a lot. It's also evident in how much fewer holds he got this year from his career norm.

The entire Yankee bullpen hasn't exactly been very good this season. Myers still held on with a solid ERA, though he affected others. The point is simple. This is more about getting a youth movement than Myers' numbers. That's the simple truth and that's what makes Newsday wrong. Last edited by CMH; 08-07-2007 at 02:45 AM. |

You just have to look deeper into it.
According to Baseball Prospectus, Mike Myers is the third worst reliever in the majors with inherited runs prevented, only behind Joseph Smith and Randy Flores. In the mean time, Mike Myers is 7th overall in the majors with bequeathed runners prevented, which means he got the 7th best support in the majors from pitchers following him.

I don't see how you'd say it got little to do with Myers' numbers, when his numbers are bad, and the team basically said it's because of his numbers.

The team can say what they want and I'm sure they use the same stats you brought up but I doubt Newsday is looking at the same thing.
They only talked about average against, not inherited runs scored. I'm not going to say that Myers deserves to be on the big league roster but I'm positive that it wasn't average against that sent him down. |

At least the average thing sounds more believable than the youth movement thing. Mike Myers talked about how he gave up too many hits to lefthanders and didn't do the job he's supposed to do too.
The player himself said it, Torre said it. Torre also said he's talked to Cashman about it. On the other hand, nobody ever mentioned a Yankees youth movement. The player replacing Myers is 34-year-old!

Here's a typical Myers scenario, based on what I often observed this year: The opposition is mounting a rally, runners on first and second, one out. Myers is called in to do the job that he was being paid for, to get the lefty out who is up next. He fails, and gives up a single or a walk. Torre lifts him and brings in somebody else who either shuts the door or, more commonly, lets one or two of the runners inherited by Myers to score but manages to get the third out before Myers' runner can score. Result: Myers' ERA is unchanged and improves when he pitches well in other, non-pressure situations. He still failed to do his primary job, a tough one I suppose because it was a highly specialized one, but that is why he was let go.

What's a bit poignant about this for Matsui is that, while A-Rod is still negotiating with the fan who caught his ball (it's going to cost Alex a bundle, if he ever gets it back), Matsui got his returned to him for a bat, a ball, and a tunafish sandwich.

I just read about last night's game. You can say what you want about Clemens, he won't let his players get plunked without making the other team pay for it.
Joba threw 2 shutout innings last night and I heard his slider was filthy. Anyone see him throw? Sometimes, I really miss not having a life so I could watch Yankee games all the time
