Looking forward to see if Jeannette can swipe the crown from Corbett - Corbett's title is on the line, right?

Excellent stuff as always Mike. The Corbett-Jeanette fight will be a tough one to call. I think Corbett by close decision.

McAuliffe defends title
December 7, 1910
Jack McAuliffe (CH) (36-6-2) took control in the middle rounds and cruised to a UD15 over George Lavigne (4/6) (29-14-1) to defend the WBC Lightweight title. McAuliffe and Lavigne fought even through 9 rounds with the champ having a slight edge. McAuliffe then sealed the fight with knockdowns in both the 10th and the 11th rounds. Lavigne couldn't do anything more than split the final 4 rounds and McAuliffe won going away. Lavigne drops to 2-7 in title fights. I had it 144-139. Scott Lang, ringside expert, had it 145-138. The official judges had it 144-139/146-137/144-139. On the undercard FW - Young Griffo (13/9) (33-8-6) UD10 Ole Oleson (70/75) (13-14-3) BW - Cockney Cohen (53/40) (11-7-4) UD10 Phil McGovern (UR) (11-3) (mcgovern at pre) MW - Ned McCann (32/24) (11-4-1) KO4 James Payne (40/49) (8-8) (both at pre) 4 fight card |

Jeannette regains title
December 13, 1910
Joe Jeannette (4/CH) (23-1) was trailing a close fight going into the 12th, he staggered champ James Corbett (CH/4)(31-9-3) early in the round and then finished him off at the end of it to win by KO12. Corbett went down with 7 seconds left in the round and couldn't make it back up. Corbett had control of the fight and had managed to stay away from Jeannette for the most part. He built a pretty solid lead over the middle rounds. I had it 107-104 at the time of the stoppage. Two of the official cards had Corbett ahead and the third had the fight even. On the undercard LH - Al Kaufmann (30/15) (13-13-1) UD10 Thomas Sayers (10/20) (12-2-3) (sayers at pre) LW - Tim Kearns (15/11) (13-7-3) TKO9 Austin Gibbons (32/35) (22-21-4) 77-76 Gibbons LW - Arthur Cote (58/51) (13-7-1) TKO5 George Washington (73/75) (10-7-3) (both at pre) FW - Kid Landfield (6/5) (14-12-2) SD10 Charles Slusher (37/45) (11-7-2) (slusher at pre) HW - James McCoy (club) (11-21-3) SD10 Heriberto Rojas (club) (9-14-2) (mccoy at post for this club fight) |

Dempsey loses non-title bout
December 15, 1910
Jack Dempsey (4/4) (37-6) lost his first non-title fight in the semifinals of the IBF Middleweight tourney. Billy Papke (2/2) (21-3) stopped Dempsey midway through the 12th and final round to advance to the title bout. Both fighters were cut badly in the fight, Dempsey suffering his cut early and it reopened 4 times before the ref finally stopped it. I had Dempsey ahead 105-104 but he had lost the previous two rounds because I had him protecting the cut. I decided to let him fight it out in the last round and my decision cost him the fight. Although one judge had Papke ahead and the other two had Dempsey up by a point. Papke will face the winner of Ketchel-Creedon bout that will take place in January. On the undercard WW - Buddy Ryan (30/15) (13-16) UD10 Wildcat Ferns (7/16) (16-6) 97-93 (Ferns at pre ... Ferns never in the fight) FW - Billy Barrett (42/36) (15-11-6) UD10 Jerry Barnett (23/37) (13-7) 97-93 (barnett at pre) HW - Sid Russell (104/104) (9-11-1) MD10 Dick O'Brien (101/103) (11-10-1) LH - PJ Rentzler (club) (14-21-4) MD8 Tom Cowler (UR) (6-2) (rentzler at post, cowler at pre for this club fight) WW - Tommy Howell (UR) (8-1) SD8 Jack Bennett (club) (9-18-2) (howell at pre for this club fight) |

Dammit, I was hoping that Dempsey would take the tournment but hey what can you do. He's still ranked pretty highly so maybe he can put together a win or two and get a title shot. As for the undercard, that was a big win for Buddy Ryan.

Blackburn wins IBF Lightweight title
December 16, 1910
Jack Blackburn (2/CH) (27-11-5) won a UD15 over Abe Attell (3/4) (35-10-3) to win the new IBF Lightweight crown. The two fought to a draw earlier in the year but this time Blackburn took control of the fight early and then held on to win the title. Attell started holding his hands low in the 3rd and his left eye started swelling in the 9th. Attell came on strong late but it was not enough. I had it 145-142. Harry Otty ringside had it 145-140. The official judges saw an entirely different fight as all three of them scored it 143-142 with Blackburn winning the 15th on all the cards. On the undercard FW - Will Curley (12/9) (18-8-3) MD10 Jack Skelly (31/42) (12-4-1) (skelly at pre) BW - John Connors (37/30) (8-5-4) KO6 Tom Cassiday (32/44) (11-4-3) (both at pre) MW - Harris Martin (8/10) (23-16-6) DRAW10 Jack Nelson (55/54) (14-5-1) (nelson at pre) WW - Blink McCloskey (UR) (9-1) SD8 Frank Solomon (club) (3-21-2) (mccloskey at pre for this club fight) LW - Charley Neary (UR) (7-2-1) SD8 Rudy Unholz (UR) (9-3) (both at pre for this club fight ... Unholz blows a chance to move to main) |
