2000-01 Offseason News and Notes

On paper, it looks like a excellent draft class this year. The Royals scooped up Jared Weaver first, who actually isn't as good as i would think a top pick should be, but still projects to be something valuable. David Wright going 2, Kinsler 4, Gonzalez 6, Cano 11, plus a bunch of others show the depth. Alot of great picks.

Bob Horner is an overwhelming, first ballot inductee into the baseball Hall of Fame. Horner deservingly got 94.1 percent of votes.

I enjoyed watching Horner. He had a very impressive career. A man with Brute power, who hit a lot of home runs during a time when homers weren’t as common as other eras. A well deserved honour!

It's been a while since we looked at the leaderboards, so over the next few offseasons, i'll take a look at single season and career leaders in several stat categories. First up. Hits.

Single Season Hit Leaders

Lou Gehrig still holds the top 2 spots down, and 4 of the top 10. A bunch of recent additions to the list as the offensive era is making it's mark. Nomar now appears twice, and Adrian Beltre is tied for the 3rd highest total ever!

Career Hit Leaders

Ty Cobb sits comfortably at the top. George Brett had a wonderful career, and is the most recent addition to the top 10. Surprised to see Tony Fernandez on the list. I love Tony, and knew he was good, but didn't think this good. The only retired player, who played his career post 1900 and isn't in the HOF is Gene Woodling. I'll probably have to look at him again and see why i didn't induct him.

Time for another addition of MLB's Century Celebration!

Some big names are available this offseason. Pitching help from Doc Gooden, who never resigns with a team, and Ramon Martinez is available. Tate Seefried and Carlos Delgado are also available if you like the home run. I expect alot of money to be thrown around.

Wow, Oakland, who finally did something last year, signs Doc Gooden to a very reasonable contract. They also bring back all-star catcher Jorge Posada late in the process on a very cheap deal. Are the A's finally ready to win a title?!

Seefried and Delgado sign the richest contracts we have seen. Next year could be the first 100 million dollar deal.

Here are the trades that took place during the winter months.

Ichiro being traded again is surprising. He's in his prime, and hit over .350 last year. He's cheap, and exactly the type of hitter you should covet. He goes for 5 minor league pitchers. None look like anything to get excited about.

CHIPPER. JONES.

Love Sizemore 3, Hammel 18, K-Rod 24, Peralta 28, Bourn 29, Kubel Round 2, Aaron Hill R2, Hardy R2, CHOO R2 (steal of the draft) and my personal favorite -- Wily Mo Pena was selected by the Brew Crew! Start mashing!!

Don't forget to give us Don Mattingly updates! I cannot believe he has that many hits! Is 3500 a possibility or is he retiring?

Athletics thinking REAL smart. Good for Beane and co.

Nice uniforms! Beautiful.

Can't believe Robinson Cano went 11th in the draft and not sooner.

It's also painful to see Chipper Jones in a Yankees uniform.

Is the fact that Oakland picked up Eric Gagne significant? Is he having a good career?

.
Mattingly had spent the last few years platooning for the Giants and Dodgers. In limited at bats, he's still hitting around 290 in those years, which is why he got those chances. This year, he signed a MLC with the Marlins, and looks to be a member of the AAA Charlotte Knights. If he does make it back to the show, i can't see him playing to much. So even though he's only about 150 hits away from 3500, i doubt, barring a miracle, that won't happen.

Not really. Gagne has been a middle of the road reliever, who Atlanta let start last year, and it did not go well. He lost 13 games with a 6.07 era. He's back to the bullpen in Oakland, but not a frontline option.

George,

Where did you go to get the exact Face Gen pics for the players? Is there a website I can go to do this? I'm thinking of starting a league like yours.

Thanks,

JT

I've been having some connectivity issues with my laptop and my wireless connection, so that's the main holdup here. I can't seem to remain connected for more then a few minutes, and that's what i have spent time on trying to fix most of the week. Hopefully will be back to this soon.

The facegen download in add-on central, and there is a facegen thread with alot of great newer options in it. It's in the mod section. Take a look and you can take your pick of what you like best. If your so inclined, doing facegen yourself is also pretty easy.

FaceGen Modeller Demo 1.0 Download - FaceGenDemo.exe

that's what i use. It's free and fairly self explanatory.

2001 MLB Regular Season

Here are the top 10 prospects on baseball

Well, two months in, for the first time in history, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are a first place team. In their fourth season, the team lead by Jeff Bagwell, Adam Dunn and Tim Hudson. They have a half game lead on the Yankees for first. It’s early, very early, but this is a sign of things to come. Albert Pujols and Grady Sizemore are knocking on the door to join the team.

Bagwell, baseball's sixth highest paid player

The best team in baseball, and this might be a first too, is the Oakland A’s!! Derek Jeter, Jacques Jones and Todd Helton are propelling this team to a 38-14 record. Pitching, hitting and defense. It’s a complete squad. Can Oakland finally win a World Series?!

Here are the pre All-star game trades made

The leading vote getter for this years all-star game is 27 year old Indians first baseman Erubiel Durazo. His .352 average and 26 home runs were good enough to put up a first half WAR of 5.0 He received 3.4 million votes.

Here are the trades made after the all-star game

The AL east has turned into a very competitive division. The Yankees have taken the lead with 79 wins going into September, but Baltimore and Tampa are right there with 76 a piece. Cleveland and Oakland both have nice leads on their divisions, and Anaheim is holding the Wildcard. AL East and wild card is up for grabs.

KC is close to setting a record. They sit at 33-102. They have a shot at being the worst team in AL history. Currently, the 1973 Tigers hold that distinction, going 43-119. The 1964 NY Mets are in no danger of being caught as the worst team ever. They finished 32-130!

Over in the NL, Todd Greene has reached 50 home runs again. After a slow start, he’s hit 35 round trippers in 70 games. That’s a pretty good pace! His Cubs remain under .500 though, might be time to rebuild that club. The Dodgers and Pirates have comfy leads, but in the NL east, Philly, NY, Montreal and Florida are all within 5 games for the division title. No idea how that’s gonna finish.

Baseball's elite power hitter

Bo Jackson just recorded his 2500th hit, and a week later, he knocks out his 600th career home run! All but 50 of those homers came in a Expos uniform. Lets ignore those two years in Pittsburgh. Bo is a few months from turning 39, so 700 probably isn’t realistic, but he is having a great year, so I’m hoping he does have another year in him. GET THE EXPOS TO THE PLAYOFFS BEFORE YOU RETIRE AND THEY ARE GONE!! Time is running out!!

Bo knows Everything!

Ok, final weekend of the season. Baltimore has a one game lead on the Yankees, and they play each other 3 times. Because both teams play each other, Anaheim has clinched the wild card despite only having a 2 game lead. In the NL, the Mets lead Philly by 1, and the Expos by two. Philly holds the wildcard with Montreal, Milwaukee, St. Louis and SF within 2 games. Lots of meaningful baseball this weekend, so lets take it day by day!!

Wow, we almost had a 4 way tie for the final wildcard game. I wonder how the game would have handled that. In any event, here is the Wildcard play in game between the Giants and Expos.

The Expos look like they are gonna strike first, loading the bases in the 2nd inning, but come away with nothing. They load the bases again in the 3rd, and again get nothing. Montreal loads the bases in the fifth, and amazingly, get nothing!! Are they cursed?!! The Giants load the bases in the 6th inning and end up scoring 5. Wow, game over. Pretty easy to see what happened here.

The Royals finish 42-120, which is a American League record for worst w/l record in league history. 101 years, and this Royals team is the worst we have ever seen. Well done guys!!

Despite not making the playoffs, Bo Jackson had a great year. 30 homers, 104 RBIs, .283 average, and 21 steals. Pretty good for the future HOFer.

Todd Greene has a big September, hitting 13 home runs, for a total of 63 on the season. That’s his 2nd time hitting over 60. Todd has 435 home runs and he’s 30. Legitimate shot, and probably a good chance to surpass Harmon Killebrew’s 810.

As always, awesome job!

Firstly, it seems all the graphics from before the 1993 regular season have disappeared. Kind of a bummer really.

Secondly, I wonder how Miguel Cabrera is getting along in this universe.

Wow, that's bull****. My imageshack account doesn't seem to exist anymore. I paid for a years membership a while ago, when that ran out, i moved to tinypic to upload pictures. I was under the impression that because i was a paid member, the pictures would remain up.

Tinypic doesn't have an option for a mass upload like imageshack did. I would like to fix all the messed up years, but that's 92 years and alot of pictures. So, Tinypic isn't an option i am going to use. Does anyone know a free site to upload pictures that includes a way to upload 20 or so pictures at a time?

Photobucket does, not sure about 20 pics at once but I have done 6 or 7 for my dynasty, and it doesn't seem to have an alert to a maximum. I have 255 pictures on there and it's only 2% of the storage limit you are given.
