This is a fun list and management will have some intriguing choices over the next few months to try to guide it's fighter to a world title shot.

McGovern powers to another victory...
Terry McGovern, USA, 1-0-0 (1) vs Tony Novak, USA, 1-1-0 (1)
Governor’s Foot Guard Hall, Hartford, CT, USA. “Terrible” Terry McGovern floors Novak at the end of the 1st round. Novak makes it to his corner but still looks a bit wobbly. McGovern comes out fast and tries to follow up on last round’s knockdown and puts Novak down at the beginning of the 2nd. Novak takes a pretty good beating, 24-3, but survives the round. A combo puts Novak down for the third time in the 3rd, this time for good. Winner: McGovern Result: (KO3) Cards: 20-16, on all three cards in favor of McGovern Punch stats: 6-26, 23.1% Novak - 98-235, 41.7% McGovern |

Kessler wins the battle of undefeated Scandinavian fighters...
Mikkel Kessler, Denmark, 3-0-0 (3) vs Nils Stenman, Sweden, 1-0-0 (1)
Kolding Hallen, Kolding, Denmark. Kessler starts the fight with a short, right uppercut and ends the round, 23-2, with a nice combination. Kessler again outpoints, 9-2, Stenman in the 2nd. 14-7, for Kessler in the 3rd. Kessler puts the Swede down in the 4th, 23-5. Kessler keeps applying the pressure and Stenman is having trouble responding. A body shot puts Stenman down again in the 7th, and the ref steps in to stop the fight after Kessler continues to land unanswered shots. Winner: Kessler Result: (TKO7) Cards: 60-53, 58-55, 60-53, all three cards in favor of Kessler Punch stats: 67-140, 47.9% Stenman - 237-559, 42.4% Kessler |

Great event finishes with Louis making 9th successful title defense...
WBO Title Fight - MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, NV, USA
Main Event [Champion] Joe "The Brown Bomber" Louis, USA, 21-1-0 (20) vs [3/7] Jack "The Manassa Mauler" Dempsey, USA, 24-3-0 (22) Joe Louis is a remarkable 9-0-0 (9), 4KO, 5TKO, in title fights and is making his 9th title defense of the WBO Heavyweight Title. Jack Dempsey vacated his WHBA Heavyweight Title for this World Title fight opportunity. Dempsey is 3-3-0 (1), 0KO, 1TKO, in title fights. Louis seems to have Dempsey a little wobbled in the 1st round, 16-9. 12-8, Louis in the 2nd. 13-2, Louis in the 3rd. Dempsey looks good in the 4th, 11-8. The Brown Bomber works Dempsey’s body in the 5th, 20-8. Dempsey is missing and Louis is countering very well, 18-6, in the 6th. A left uppercut puts Dempsey down in the 7th. Dempsey is up and barely makes it to his corner. Dempsey has Louis stunned in the 8th, 12-4. 17-12, Dempsey in the 9th. A right hook puts the champ down in the 9th with half of the round left. Louis survives the round. The momentum has definitely changed, 21-7, Dempsey in the 11th. 13-4, Dempsey in the 12th, as Louis is having a problem with swelling around his right eye. A big cross puts The Manassa Mauler down in the 14th. Dempsey is up but Louis has him hurt and the fight is stopped at the 2:35 mark of the 14th. Winner: Louis Result: (TKO14) Cards: 123-122 Louis, 124-122 Louis, 123-122 Dempsey Punch stats: 272-907, 30% Dempsey - 304-703, 43.2% Louis Undercard Stanley Ketchel, USA, 9-0-0 (9) vs Mervine Thompson, USA, 9-2-1 (7) Ketchel is off to a good start, 15-1, in the 1st, but has already been warned for leaning on Thompson’s neck. Ketchel takes the 2nd, 11-5, but the “Cleveland Thunderbolt” comes back in a close 3rd, 13-12. Thompson lands a hook and puts Ketchel down for the first time in his career, barely gets up at the count of 9, in the 4th, 19-4. Ketchel is down again at the beginning of the 5th, but it is ruled a slip. 11-3, 5th for Thompson. A big overhand right by Ketchel puts Thompson down at the beginning of the 6th. Thompson is up but has 2:34 to survive in this round. A cross puts Thompson down again in the 6th, but he manages to get out of the round, even throwing back at the end of the round, 24-7. “The Michigan Assassin” continues to pummel Thompson and throws punches with both hands as he traps his opponent against the ropes, 28-2, in the 7th. A body shot puts Thompson down again and even though he gets up, the ref finally stops the fight at the 2:47 mark of the 8th. Winner: Ketchel Result: (TKO8) Cards: 66-63, on all three cards in favor of Ketchel Punch stats: 108-301, 35.9% Thompson - 232-548, 42.3% Ketchel Alexis Arguello, Nicaragua, 5-0-0 (5) vs Jose Napoles, Cuba, 6-0-0 (6) Although some insiders feel that Napoles may have overtrained a bit for this fight, he comes out and effectively counters Arguello’s offense and wins the 1st round, 14-7. Arguello lands the only significant punch in the first half of the round, 4-0, but Napoles takes the round with a beautiful flurry of punches in the latter part, 15-0. The 2nd round ends, 15-4, in favor of Napoles. The 3rd round is the best by far to this point in the fight 15-10, in favor of Napoles, as both fighters exchange blows. Arguello has developed a good deal of swelling around his left eye. The 4th is definitely Arguello’s round, 19-6, as he lands a nice three punch combo to end the round. Another good round for the Nicaraguan, as Arguello floats around the ring and brilliantly avoids Napoles’ punches, 15-6, in the 5th. Napoles easily takes the 6th, 7-0, as Arguello seems to take a breather. Arguello, 12-9, in the 7th, but his corner needs to concentrate on reducing the swelling around the left eye which has become a major concern. Napoles has Argüello a bit shaken here in the 8th, 12-6, as this fight is too close to call at this point. Arguello lands a big shot that has Napoles off-balance but a big cross opens a gash over the right eye of Arguello and the doctor comes up to the ring to check. The fight will continue, but Arguello needs to step on the gas now because of his major medical concerns. 12-5, Napoles in the 10th, as the fight seems to be slipping out of Arguello’s hands. What a courageous round for Arguello as he is getting outworked 10-0, at the beginning of the round but comes back to outscore Napoles to win the 11th, 22-10. Both fighters look tired but continue swinging into the 12th. The referee has deducted a point from Napoles for a low blow. 13-8, Napoles in the 12th, as he has some major swelling developing around the left eye. A right cross reopens the gash over Arguello’s eye and the doctor has come up on the apron to check the cut. The fight has been stopped here at the 2:39 mark of the 13th. I have no doubt that we will see a rematch of this fight in the future, but I believe that fight will be for a championship title when it occurs. Winner: Napoles Result: (TKO13)(Cuts) Cards: 115-112 Napoles, 115-112 Napoles, 114-113 Arguello Punch stats: 261-911, 28.6% Argüello - 324-643, 50.4% Napoles Miguel Cotto, Puerto Rico, 7-0-0 (7) vs Antonio Margarito, Mexico, 4-0-0 (4) Margarito is bringing the fight to Cotto and is landing the harder punches in the 1st round, 11-8. I don’t know if it is a wise strategy to slug it out with Cotto, though. Cotto takes a slow 2nd round, 10-2. Another feel-out round, 8-2, for Margarito in the 3rd. A straight right hurts Margarito to start off the 4th, and Cotto continues to apply pressure. A big hook to the body drops Margarito like a 400 lb man droping a load in the bathroom after an all-you-can-eat buffet dinner! Sorry for the visual. Margarito is unable to get up and Miguel Cotto continues his explosive climb up the charts. Winner: Cotto Result: (KO4) Cards: 29-28 Margarito, 29-28 Margarito, 29-28 Cotto Punch stats: 60-153, 39.2% Margarito - 97-250, 38.8% Cotto Opening Bout Cassius Clay, USA, Pro Debut vs Rick Zufall, USA, 1-0-0 (1) Clay puts Zufall down twice in the 1st round and controls the 1st and 2nd. Zufall puts up a fight in the 3rd, but is down twice in the 4th, the last for good from a combination to the head and body. Winner: Clay Result: (KO4) Cards: 30-25, 29-26, 29-26, all three cards in favor of Clay Punch stats: 60-100, 60% Zufall - 187-305, 61.3% Clay |
