Good luck to you as well. Between this WS anticipation and some ill advised caffeine a bit ago, I have no idea how I'm going to get to sleep.

Looks like I would have won the HR bet, but I'd much rather have had the WS win. Pitching turned out to be more effective than expected.
Matt already did a good job of summing up the 1948 World Series in the TWB thread, but just for my own records, taking a glace at the box scores anyway... 1948 World Series 9/25 DET @ PHI: WIN 9-6 Hal Andrew (1-0, 6.75) gave up 6R in 8IP but still got the win. Mike Downey (1Sv, 0.00) pitched a hitless 9th for a save. Dan Volpe (0-1, 14.40) had a rougher outing giving up 8R in 5IP for the loss. 1B Lonnie Arrendale (1 for 4, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR), C Chuck Rauch (2 for 4, 1R, 2RBI, 2DBL), SS Ted Stuart (2 for 4, 1R, 1BB, 1DBL) were top PHI batters. For us, Bud Moore got POG going 3 for 4, 1R, 3RBI, 1BB, 1HR. Ray Kress went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1HR. Carl Sandoz went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1DBL. Rollin Fish went 2 for 4, 3R, 1BB. We had the game in hand from the start although the Phillies put a scare into us with a 4 run 8th. 9/26 DET @ PHI: WIN 5-2 Billy Crowell (1-0, 1.04) was excellent giving up only 2R (1ER) and 6 hits in 8.2IP for the win and POG. Bob Guilderson (1Sv, 0.00) recorded the final out for a save. John Nolting (0-1, 1.00) gave up 5R in a CG loss, but only 1R was "earned". C Chuck Rauch was the only hot PHI batter going 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1DBL. For us, Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 1RBI. Carl Sandoz was 2 for 4, 2R, 2DBL. Luther Ormiston hit a 3RBI double with his only hit of the day. Again, we take an early lead and hold on. We out hit PHI 7 to 6, but their 4 errors to our 2 proved costly. 9/28 PHI @ DET: WIN 9-8 Harley Melzer gave up 4R in 8IP. But the game wasn't decided until the 11th where Alex Footwangler (1-0, 0.00) got the win for pitching a scoreless final inning. Mickey Lonergan gave up 5R in 8IP, but the loss went to Bill Risner (0-1, 6.75) who gave up a run in the final 1.2IP. Top PHI batters were 2B Pokey Dorsey who went 2 for 4, 1R, 1BB and LF Lee Friedman who went 1 for 3, 1R, 3RBI, 3BB, 1DBL. That 3RBI double by Lee did the most damage in a 7R 9th inning by them. For us, Ray Kress went 2 for 5, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR. Rik the Greek Kaladimos went 2 for 4, 1R, 1BB. Matt Perly hit a solo HR with his only hit. Luther Ormiston was name dPOG going 2 for 3, 1R, 3RBI, 2BB, 1HR. On field manager Arden Killbreath got himself thrown out in the 9th in and attempt to get the Tigers fired up after giving up 7 runs in the 9th. We responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th and then the game winning run in the 11th. 9/29 PHI @ DET: loss 1-2 Hal Andrew (1-1, 4.24) pitched an awesome game giving up only 2R, 4hits, 1 walk in a CG loss. Dan Volpe (1-1, 6.23) also pitched well giving up 1R in 8IP for POG and the win. A save went to their closer Doyle Weaver (1Sv, 3.00) for shutting us down in the 9th. C Chuck Rauch was top PHI batter going 2 for 4, 1R. For us, only Luther Ormiston hit well going 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1HR. Luther's HR was in the 9th off of Volpe but wasn't enough to spark a rally. 9/30 PHI @ DET: loss 3-5 Billy Crowell (1-1, 3.06) gave up 5R in a CG loss. John Nolting (1-1, 2.12) allowed only 3R in 8IP for the win. Doyle Weaver (2.25) struck out 2 in the final inning for his second save of the series. PHI RF Nicky Barker was top batter going 2 for 3, 3R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1DBL, 1TRPL. For us, Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 1R. David Castaneda went 2 for 4, 1RBI. Luther Ormiston hit a 2R HR with his only hit of the day. Both teams were held to 6 hits. This was a tough loss as we truly wanted to close out the series at home. 10/2 DET @ PHI: loss 5-6 Harley Melzer gave up 5R (4ER) in 9IP. But the loss went to Lloyd Wyman (0-1, 9.00) who was unable to hold in the 11th. Mickey Lonergan gave up 5R in 9IP. The win went to Bill Bailey (1-0, 6.00) who pitched the final 1.1 without giving up a run. We have been an excellent extra innings team this year but our best bull pen pitcher couldn't hold on today. We out hit them 14 to 12 and had the game won until their 4 run 8th inning. A solo HR by Lonny Arrendale sparked a rally in that inning... a 2RBI double by Lee Friedman was also clutch in the 8th. For us, Carl Sandoz went 4 for 6, 1R, 1DBL. Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1BB. David Castaneda went 3 for 4, 1R, 1RBI. 10/3 DET @ PHI: loss 3-4 Hal Andrew (1-2, 3.51) gave up 4R in 8.2IP, but only 2 of those runs were earned as 2 errors in our mid-infield proved costly. Dan Volpe got POG giving up only 3R & 5 hits in a CG win. 1B Lonny Arrendale went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1HR. C Chuck Rauch went 2 for 4. LF Lee Friedman went 2 for 4, 1R, 1DBL. For us, David Castaneda was our top hitter going 1 for 3, 2RBI, 1DBL. We got out hit 10 to 5 and committed 2 errors to their none. Luther Ormiston was our WS MVP hitting .310, 3HR, 10RBI. Ray Kress is normally also Mr. Clutch for us, but he only managed .200, 2HR, 5RBI. The Phillies pitchers did a good job at keeping Kress quiet. Actually, neither team put up huge offensive numbers as I kind of expected. Still, this series was quite the nail biter and I was glad to be a part of it.

1948 POST SEASON
I'm very happy with the end of the regular season. 102 wins and a pennant was a huge accomplishment. THE BAD -CF Carlton Affee turned 38 and his skills took a noticeable hit. Fish ended up starting against lefties in his place. -SP Bob Guilderson and Harley Melzer both had a decent year, but you could tell age was catching up with them towards the end of the season. They turn 38 next year and that's usually very bad news for our team. -Two of my prized minor league pitchers took huge talent hits due to injury. Errol Roberts and John Faucette are two guys I had high hopes for, so hopefully they will get healthy and regain their potential. -Rik Kaladimos has been clutch at times, but most of the time is unimpressive. THE GOOD -Luther Ormiston was named Batter of the Year. He set a Tiger single season record with 140 RBI and was 1 short of the AL season record in HRs - tied at 39 this year with Ray Kress. -David Castaneda won his second consecutive Gold Glove at SS. He is also exceeding my expectations with the bat. He normally hits .242, but got his average up to .286 this year. At 27 he continues to improve. I used to say, the only reason he's starting is because of his phenomenal range, but now, his bat is getting a lot more respect. -Hal Andrew was a stud from start to finish this year. He is clearly the ace of our staff now and for the foreseeable future. -Billy Crowell was a nice pick up for us this year. He had a couple of rough weeks, but was otherwise solid for most of the season. His 25 wins even beyond my expectations. -Ray Kress had another 0 error season in 146 games in LF as well as was in contention for BOY. His 137 runs was an AL single season record. He also broke his team record in walks with 131. -Lloyd Wyman broke a team single season record for games pitched (58) and Saves (19). -2B Matt Perly had career bests just about every stat category and got his batting average back up to a respectable .309 after a disappointing .268 last year. OTHER -C Bud Moore - His 18 HRs and 100RBI were a career best for him. But it wasn't the break out season we had predicted for him as his average dropped. I really thought he'd hit over .300 and have an all-star year watching him in the preseason. The same thing happened to Perly last year, so who knows... maybe next year will be his year. -C/3B John Degal got some big league experience and has thus far shown little improvement. He's still young and will most likely spend more time as Bud Moore and Luther Ormiston's backup next year. -I wanted to give Bud Urlich some experience as well, but our rotation was much healthier this year than last so there wasn't much call up opportunity for our AAA pitchers. I'll try to find some innings for him next year even if it means moving one of our vets. -Although most of my bull pen had terrible ERA numbers this year, they were pretty decent in the clutch. We were 17-6 in extra inning games and were 31-18 in 1 run games.

Goose - looks like Degal is listed at AAA as off 3/2/1949. I would really bump him up to the Majors before Spring Training. Like talent levels getting bumps during the season (more for major league players than minor league players), I tended to see more development in spring training for guys in the majors than in the minors.
I'd also start pushing Ulrich as a SP. He's 24 with loads of potential (9/9 studd/movement). Six years in the minors is just wasting him away. Melzer and Guilderson are old goats at this point. Guilderson's 4.43 ERA wasn't all that great, but the run support gave him a 15-10 record. Even Crowell at 36 is getting up there. With that great offense, you need to start using that #4 spot to break in the next generation of studd pitchers. You probably could float one young pitcher each year taking his lumps in the #4 spot in the hopes/expectation that in the following year he'd be settled and ready to move up to the #3 role. Faucette's another one to sort out. John |

Yup, that was the reason for demoting Liggett and Chenault was to make room for Degal and Ulrich.
They'll be there... patience.

1949 Draft Picks
CF/RF Mark Silcox - Mark is an aggressive swinger and will get on base a lot more with hits than walks as he lacks the discipline to take pitches. He's got average HR power potential, but looks to be a good hitter to the gaps. He is a good defensive outfielder, although I wish he had a stronger throwing arm. He's got excellent base running instincts but only decent speed. 1B Walter White - Walter looks to be an average hitter with decent power to the gaps, but he doesn't look like he's got much HR hitting potential. He's got an excellent glove at 1B for a rightie. His range isn't quite as impressive however. He's an excellent sac bunter, but has little chance of bunting for a hit as he doesn't have much foot speed. SP Jerry Binette - Jerry's a very average RHP Starter in almost every respect. He only has two pitches... fastball and the split finger fastball. His best attribute is his stamina. He's only 18, so hopefully he's got some hidden potential there somewhere. MR Bill Davis - Bill has a decent range of pitches and is a lefty. However, he ranks a little below average in just about every talent category. He does have decent range and a decent glove defensively, but that's about all I can brag about. But hey, what do you expect from the 2nd to the last pick in the draft. He's another 18 y/o who will hopefully surprise us with some hidden potential he has not yet shown.

1949 Post Spring Training
TRADES -None. We had a dominating season last year and our entire team will return and hopefully repeat. Also, with our aging pitching staff, we can't afford to give up any of our SP prospects and those were the only players that received any interest. LINEUP CHANGES -Rollin Fish has taken over CF full time as Carlton Affee's skills have plunged. He will hit leadoff against righties. -Our Gold Glove SS David Castaneda continues to get better with the bat and will hit lead off against lefties. MOVES -Iggy Chennault was sent down to Buffalo-AAA. -Roxie Liggett refused demotion so he was released. -John "dirtbag" Degal was been called back up and will be primary backup at 3B. He will also get some starts at catcher. Hopefully between those two backup positions, we'll get him enough at bats that he'll grow. -Steven Zucal was called up to be our primary backup at 2B. He's an excellent defensive 2B and has good speed which is something our team sorely needs. -Bud Ulrich was our #1 pick (#2 overall) in '43, but just couldn't seem to find any kind of consistancy in our minor leagues in 6 years. But, we called him up anyway and he had a good spring training. Good enough that he moved into the #3 spot in our rotation ahead of Bob Guilderson.

If you have a trade in mind, PM or email me. But for the most part, my team is set for the year unless someone makes me an offer I can't refuse. For some of my team this is a do or die season. Alex Footwanger and Bob Guilderson have both said this is their last year. Calton Affee really should retire as well. The only reason he's still on my roster is that he's a solid defensive CF and, well, I'm a sucker for letting vets stay too long sometimes.

Top Browns hitter was RF Tony Monachino who went 2 for 5, 1R, 3RBI, 1HR. For us, Luther Ormiston went 2 f ro4, 1R, 1RBI, 2DBL. Philly actually out hit us 12 to 7, but committed 2 errors to our none. 4/10 DET @ PHI: WIN 8-1 Billy Crowell (2-0, 2.00) got POG honors for a CG win giving up only 1R. For us, Ray Kress got POG going 2 for 4, 2R, 5RBI, 1BB, 2HR. Bud Moore hit a solo HR for his only hit of the game. David Castaneda went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1DBL. STANDINGS 7-3, #1 in the AL BAD NEWS -Carl Sandoz and Matt Perly are off to slow starts this season. -Neither Harley Melzer nor Bob Guilderson impressed for the #4 slot in the rotation. -Hal Andrew was lost for a week after leaving the first game of the season with a sholder injury. Maybe should have skipped one more start as he looked terrible on the one game he pitched after returning. Hopefully he'll shake it off and pitch like our Ace should. GOOD NEWS -Bud Ulrich has pitched well for a rookie (2-0 and #3 in the AL in ERA). He also leads our team with a .571 batting avg. -Billy Crowell has started off the season well with a 3-0 record and #2 in the AL in ERA. -Pete Murovic has hit 2 HRs in 5 AB as a pinch hitter. -Ray Kress jumped out to lead the league in HR (6) and runs (12). OTHER -Bob Guilderson and Alex Footwangler have both notified us that this will be their final season. MOVES -Harley Melzer has been put on the DFA as he doesn't look to have much left in the tank. -Isaac Mitchell has been called up from Buffalo-AAA to be the primary backup at LF & RF. He should also be an excellent PH especially against lefties. -Alan Paule will move to the spot starter slot and give Guilderson some days off if Bob continues to struggle.

Tigers look strong again.
Crowell continues to amaze in throwing up that slop. Can't strike out a nun, will give up hits, but walks few and doesn't give up the long ball. Looks like a chance at another 20 win season, hopefully he doesn't fade like he did last year: 1-3 with a 5.06 ERA in September to possible cost himself the POY. One bad start out of two for Andrew... wouldn't get too worried about that. He is "inconsistent", so maybe this is his year for a "down" year after great 1948. Great start for Ulrich. His 5/6/5 Overall seem to indicate he won't maintain it, but you need to bleed him to get him up to that 9/9/6 Talent potential. There was nothing left for him to due in the minors after six years down there. Should be your Ace in a couple of years, allowing Andrew to slide into the #2 role where his inconsistentancy would be more tolerable. One wonders if Guilderson is running on fumes. The first start wasn't promising. Finding a #4 starter (or a #3 to ease Ulrich into a more relaxed #4 spot) *might* be an issue as the season goes on. There are a lot of older pitchers available with a year or so left and probably won't cost a top prospect. Or Moore might be able to bring you and early 30s strong pitcher who can give you several strong years. As I wrote elsewhere, the team really, really, really could use Castaneda to develope into the great leadoff hitter that he has the potential to become. It's odd that the Eye is taking so long to develop, while his contact is already close to being maxed. Usually it seems to be the other way around - the Pirates great 2B prospect Vardaman already has major Eye talent that's almost maxed out, while his contact hasn't reached its potential. Castaneda getting that 9 eye in the #1 spot would be devasting infront of Kress, Ormiston, Perly the Younger and eventually Degal. It also would be a postive in getting Fish down the line-up. He's sort of in there for defense, a little miscast as a CF, but that power is a nice plus along with the glove. Down in the #7 hole his 20 HR potential would be nice. Kaladimos at 1B is off to a nice start. I'm not a fan of his. ![]() Roy and Lurther are off to a combined good start. Behind then Perly the Younger and Moore are off to slow starts. Nothing to get too bent about. John |

Ouch! What a brutal second half of April. The problems offensively were ones mentioned in the last post - Kaladimos and Fish just collapsed. Perly the Younger still isn't hitting, which is discouraging. The back of the rotation is spotty, Ulrich has a streak of four straight so-so starts (not flat out horrid, but not good either), and Crowell got hammered the last two times out.
It's not time to panic, but with the Red Sox off to a good start and a very active GM in wheeling & dealing, Goose needs to balance "patience" (with guys like Perly) with not being to innactive. They have a little excess talent, but it's also a team with a core that's going to be good for years. Risking future success to Win Now is just that - a big risk. John |

1949 - 4/16 THRU 4/30
4/16 DET @ WSH: loss 9-11 Bud Ulrich gave up 7R (4ER) in 6.1 IP. Our three team errors really hurt Ulrich's start. The loss went to Alex Footwangler (0-1, 3.86) who gave up 2R in the 8th. Joe Homic also had a rough start giving up 10 walks and 7R in 3IP. But the win went to Salvatore King (1-0, 9.00) who gave up 1R in 1IP. Top WSH batters were Dean Parente (3 for 6, 2R, 2RBI, 1HR, 1SB), 3B/RF playing 1B Chris Anderson (2 for 3, 1R, 2RBI, 2BB, 1DBL) & CF Peter Overton (3 for 4, 1R, 3RBI, 1BB, 1DBL). For us, Luther Ormiston got POG despite the loss going 2 for 4, 1R, 6RBI, 1BB, 1Grand Slam. 4/17 DET @ WSH: loss 2-10 Bob Guilderson (0-2, 11.25) had another rough start giving up 9R in 5IP. The win went to Gampy Slater (2-1, 5.73) who gave up 2R in a CG win. Just about everyone hit well for WSH (18 total hits - only 4 for us). Their 2B Dean Parente got POG for going 3 for 4, 3R, 2RBI, 1BB, 1DBL, 1HR. For us, Luther Ormiston and Rik the Greek Kaladimos both hit solo HRs for their only hits of the game. 4/18 DET @ NYY: WIN 7-0 Hal Andrew (2-1, 3.13) pitched a 6 hit shut out for the CG win and POG. Chief Harrington (1-2, 4.05) also went the distance but gave up 7R for the loss. RF Jimmy Ditty was the top Yank batter going 2 for 4, 1DBL. For us, David Castaneda went 4 for 5, 3R, 2RBI, 1DBL. Carl Sandoz went 3 for 5, 1R, 2RBI, 2DBL. Ray Kress went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1SB. 4/19 DET @ NYY: WIN 4-3 Billy Crowell (4-0, 2.36) got the win giving up 3R in 7.1IP. Lloyd Wyman pitched a scoreless 9th for a save. Carpenter Erickson (1-3, 5.27) gave up 4R in 7.2IP for the loss. RF Jimmy Ditty was once again top hitter for NY going 3 for 4, 1RBI, 1DBL. For us, Carl Sandoz got POG going 3 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 2DBL. 4/20 DET @ NYY: loss 6-7 Bud Ulrich gave up 6R (4ER) in 6IP. But the loss went to Lloyd Wyman (0-1, 4.15) who was unable to hold in the 10th inning. George Bowers gave up 4R in 8IP but the win went to Willie Wood (1-0, 0.00) despite giving up 2R (0ER) in the 9th. Once again, our IF committed too many errors during an Ulrich start. Top Yank batters: LF Turk Baker (2 for 5, 1R, 3RBI, 1BB, 1DBL, 1TRPL), RF Jimmy Ditty (2 for 4, 1R, 1BB, 1DBL), 3B Tim Dilworth (2 for 4, 1BB). For us Carl Sandoz got another POG during a loss going 3 for 5, 1R, 4RBI, 1DBL, 1HR. Bud Ulrich went 1 for 3, 1R. 4/22 CLE @ DET: WIN 4-1 Bob Guilderson (1-2, 6.97) finally breaks out with a nice game giving up only 1R in 8.2IP for the win and POG. Alex Footwangler got his first save of the season finishing out the 9th. George Kauffman gave up 4R (none earned) in a CG loss. Their two errors were much more costly than our two. CLE top batter was SS Wilbur Taylor going 2 for 4, 1R, 1TRPL. For us, Bud Moore went 2 for 3, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR. 4/23 CLE @ DET: WIN 2-0 Hal Andrew (3-1, 2.25) struck out 6, allows 2 hits and no walks for a CG shutout POG win. Carl Sandoz went 1 for 2, 1BB. 4/24 CLE @ DET: loss 0-6 We had two shutouts going on until CLE scored 1 in the 8th followed by 5 in the 9th. Billy Crowell (4-1, 3.14) gave up 6R in 8.2IP for his first loss of the year. Howie Leosh (2-2, 5.58) got the win and POG for piching 8 shutout innings. John Ashley held in the 9th to complete the shutout. Top hitter today was CLE CF William Morgan who went 4 for 5, 1R. For us, Bud Moore went 2 for 4. 4/25 DET @ BOS: loss 5-6 We out hit BOS 13 to 7 but they got the game winning run in the 11th. Bud Ulrich gave up 4R in 7.2IP. Billy Crowell (4-2, 4.44) had a terrible game giving up 9R in 5.2IP for the loss. Cort Nagel (2-2, 4.66) got the win giving up 4R in 7IP. Every BOS hitter hit well. SS Owen Bastow and 3B Tim Dilworth both hit solo HRs for their only hit. For us, Bob Guilderson went 2 for 4, 1R, 3RBI, 1TRPL. Dave Castaneda went 3 for 5, 1R. STANDINGS 13-11, 4th in the AL, 6-8 in the last 14 BAD NEWS -Our trainers claim Matt Perly has bulked up a third year in a row, however, he hasn't yet shown that power at the plate and is hitting a dismal .212. -Rik the Greek and Rollin Fish are also stinking it up at the plate. -Our pitching has been inconsistent to say the least. GOOD NEWS -After two terrible starts, Bob Guilderson pitched a couple of nice games. Maybe he's not ready to be put out to pasture after all. He did get a break in between those two games. Maybe the occasional skipped start will keep this old dog fresh. -Ray Kress and Carl Sandoz have been very good at the plate and in the OF. -David Castaneda had a hot month at the plate. -4/18 Ray Kess was named Player of the Week hitting .476, 5HR, 12RBI -4/25 Hal Andrew was named Player of the Week pitching two shutouts while fanning 13 in 18 innings. TRADE -We are trading minor league CF/RF Mark Silcox & SP David Esmoris to Brooklyn for 1B Dennis Kitterman. Kitterman will jump right in as the starter at 1B and hit leadoff. MOVES -Wally Cruce will be demoted to make room for Kitterman. BATTING THRU 4/30 Code:

Wow, sorry I missed out on the conversation. Didn't get any email notification there was action going on in my thread. And between the trade, analyzing box scores to see where the heck we went wrong this last sim, and work, I've had a busy day.
