Thanks, I read through the thread originally and saw the name but didn't see a link. Too bad my TCU Horned Frogs didn't do better, but they did better than expected. I was surprised to see the local university about 15 minutes down the road from me being simmed though in the West Texas A&M Buffalos.

Too bad none of the other sports have the teams I follow yet though since the Rangers/Senators are still non-existant, and the same with the Stars/North Stars.

It's an interesting read though.

Thanks. TCU finished 3-5-2 in my replay while in real life they were 2-7-1. Just like in real life they beat Baylor and Texas in the SWC but their conference record in the sim was much better due to ties with Arkansas and SMU.

If you are a TCU fan and looking for an NFL team to follow how about the Washington Redskins with Sammy Baugh at QB. Although I imagine you would be a Dallas fan based on where you are from.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING NEWS : December 11, 1946
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
49ERS CORRAL BRONCOS 13-7, SOLIDIFY HOLD ON NFC WEST LEAD
The San Francisco 49ers took advantage of 4 interceptions to beat the Denver Broncos 13-7. The win moves the 49ers to 10-4 and 2 games ahead of the Arizona Cardinals atop the NFC West. The Broncos are 11-3 and have a 2 game lead on Kansas City in the AFC West.

It was a terrible game for Denver QB Jay Cason. Two of the 4 interceptions he threw were picked off in the San Francisco endzone and a third occurred deep in Denver territory. The one deep in Denver territory by SS Earl Joyce eventually led to a 24 yard field goal from Niners kicker Otis Johnson that made the score 10-7 San Francisco at the time. San Francisco QB Koy Harris was also ineffective, getting picked off twice and completing just 15 of 30 passes but he did connect with receiver Sam Newman for a 57 yard touchdown in the first half.

Meanwhile, in Kansas City Bruce Jones ran for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Chiefs beat Arizona 34-13 to keep their slim chance of an AFC West division title alive. The Chiefs are virtually assured a wild card berth with the win while the Cards also appear to be assured at least a wild card spot.

BILLS DEFENSE COMES ALIVE, MANHANDLES BEARS
The Buffalo Bills have made the playoffs each of the last 3 seasons because of one of the best defensive units in the game. This year the Bills defense has been terribly inconsistant but on Sunday they should the form that got them to the conference championship game a year ago. Buffalo's D just dominated the Chicago Bears in a 16-13 win. Sid *Luckman had the second worst game of his season although he did connect with receiver Ken *Kavanaugh for the Bears only touchdown.

The Bills offense continued to struggle but turnovers and key defensive stands left them with great field position all game. Ken Wilkins hit 3 long field goals and Tom Kennison scored on a 1 yard plunge 3 plays after a Luckman interception to account for all the Buffalo scoring.

EAGLES BACK INTO NFC EAST TITLE
Despite losing 27-13 to lowly Indianapolis the Philadelphia Eagles were assured of the best record in the NFC East after Washington was upset by Houston. Stephen Williams ran for 80 yards and 3 touchdowns to pace the Colts past an unispired Eagles club.

With a 10-4 record the Eagles are in danger of losing a first round bye after losing 3 of their last 4 games. Philadelphia finishes up at Houston and home to Arizona as they battle the Niners for the opening week rest break. San Francisco is home to St Louis and at Washington to end the season.

NFC STILL HAS A BATTLE FOR WILD CARD BERTHS
The Minnesota Vikings remain barely alive in their bid for a second straight playoff berth. The Vikings are 6-8 and just one game behind Washington for the last wild card spot after the Redskins were shocked at home by Houston 17-10. A 39 yard interception return for a touchdown by Roderick Lemons in the third quarter proved to be the winning score. With Sammy Baugh still sidelined at least one more week and games in Indianapolis and at home to San Francisco the Redskins could be in trouble. Minnesota finishes with 2 road games but they are against a pair of 5-9 teams in Atlanta and Tampa Bay.

SAINTS GO MARCHING INTO PLAYOFFS WITH WIN
The New Orleans Saints clinched the NFC South Division for the first time in franchise history with a 24-12 win over Cincinnati. Ryan Boyette passed for over 300 yards and Todd Berger ran for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Saints. The loss officially eliminates the 6-8 Bengals from postseason play.

STEELERS MOVE CLOSER TO PLAYOFF BERTH
The Pittsburgh Steelers moved a step closer to securing the first playoff berth in franchise history with a 27-7 drubbing of the Atlanta Falcons. Elmer *Angsman and Mickey Marangi combined for 162 yards rushing to pace the Pittsburgh attack.

The Steelers are 8-6 and presently a game ahead of both the Jets and Oakland in the battle for the final wildcard spot. Pittsburgh has games remaining in Cincinnati and home to Houston. 2 wins and they are in. The Jets and Raiders play each other next week in a game that will all but eliminate the loser from the playoff race. Oakland finishes up with a tough game in New England while the Jets are home to San Diego in the final week.

The Raiders stayed in the hunt with a last minute 23-17 win over St Louis. Antwan Baker found Greg Kuechenberg with a 40 yard touchdown pass in the last minute to provide the margin of victory. It was one of 3 touchdown passes on the day for Baker.

The Jets playoff hopes suffered a real blow with a 24-18 loss at home to Minnesota. Wes Moore returned a kick 85 yards for a touchdown to open the second half and that seemed to spur the Vikings on to victory. The Jets need to win both of their remaining games including a tough one in Oakland next week if they are to make the playoffs for the 4th time in the last 6 years.

In other action:

Bob Irvin passed for 316 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead New England past Green Bay 31-24. The Pats had already clinched the AFC East title while the Packers are out of playoff contention.

The Giants won their 3rd straight beating Jacksonville 31-29 despite a 379 yard passing day from Jags QB Tommy Bledsoe. Neither club will make the postseason.

Tennessee clinched the AFC South title with a 20-16 squeker over Dallas. The Titans received a scare when QB Manfred Gayle left the game with an injury but he will be fine for next week.

Cleveland is in the playoffs after beating Carolina 31-10. Michael Jones had 2 interceptions including one he returned for a touchdown to pace the Browns. It will be the Browns second trip to the postseason in their franchise history. More good news is QB Bob Slaughter looked very good in the game and his injury woes appear to be behind him.

Baltimore QB John Foster threw for 367 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Ravens over Tampa 40-28. However, the defending league champions postseason hopes are long gone.

In battles involving teams already out of the playoff hunt San Diego beat Seattle 27-13 while Detroit topped Miami 26-16.

1947 DRAFT APPEARS TO BE THE YEAR OF THE RECEIVER?
With the college season coming to a close most NFL scouts are in agreement that the deepest position in the draft, at least for elite level talent, will be the wideout spot. A survey of scouts reveals that 3 of the top 5 players and 7 of the top 20 are receivers. Headling the list are a pair of Oklahoma standouts in Hugh *Taylor and Don Schlereth. Between them they made 160 catches and scored 22 touchdowns to lead the Sooners to the Big 6 title and a berth in the Orange Bowl against North Carolina. Tennessee's Roger Clark, who had 85 catches, also ranks among the five best players in the draft.

Just a notch below are Elbie *Nichol and Walt *Schlinkman. Nichol is a bit more of a gamble since he played for small college Cincinnati and did not face elite competion. Schlinkman had 95 catches for Texas Tech and his stock is rising ever since a tremendous finish to his season.

Jim *Keane of Northwestern had the benefit of playing with highly touted QB Otto *Graham but he is a solid talent. Other names you can expect to see in the NFL next season include Army WR Barney *Poole, a Heisman Trophy finalist, Roy Williams of USC, Arizona State's Roger Whitley and Tulsa WR Camp *Wilson.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
ARMY'S DAVIS WINS THE HEISMAN
For the second year in a row the Heisman Trophy has been awarded to an Army back. Last year fullback Doc *Blanchard narrowly beat backfield mate Glen *Davis for the New York Downtown Athletic Club's Award. This season, with Blanchard missing time with an injury, Davis was the man to lead Army to a perfect 10-0 record. He ran for 1761 yards and 15 touchdowns. With his senior season now complete, Davis is considered a likely first round pick in the NFL draft.

A pair of quarterbacks finished second and third in the voting. Both Georgia's Charles *Trippi and DeMarco Dickinson of North Carolina led their schools to 10-0 records entering the Bowls. Last week Trippi won the Maxwell Award with Davis and Dickinson finishing second and third.

TROJANS SALVAGE A LITTLE RESPECT
An impressive win over Tulane on the road did little to take the sting out of a terrible season for the University of Southern California but it will be the last game the Trojans play this season. USC easily handled Tulane 23-3 in one of just two games over the weekend. The Trojans finish the 1946 season with a 6-3-1 record and a dissappointing 4-2-1 record within the Pacific Coast Conference. A 13-13 tie against Oregon and losses to Stanford and UCLA long ago ended any hopes the Trojans had of a bowl game. Southern California was also embarrassed 31-7 by number 4 ranked Notre Dame. So much more was expected of a club that boasted potential All-Americans in WR Roy Williams and CB Ken Murphy. Both have used up their college eligibility and are likely first round draft picks of the NFL this April.

In the only other game a team of Hawaiian AllStars beat Portland 17-3. Portland finishes it's season with a 3-6 record. The allstar squad will play Utah next week in the final regular season game of the year.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
LEAFS SWEEP HOME AND HOME SERIES FROM BOSTON
The Toronto Maple Leafs picked the right time to end their 6 game winless streak, beating Boston in back to back games to move within 2 points of the 4th place Bruins for the final playoff spot. Certainly it seems far too early to be talking playoffs but it is clear Chicago will not be a factor and until their showing this week it looked like the Leafs would be out of the playoff picture by Christmas.

On Wednesday Turk Broda turned aside all 37 Bruins shots for his first shutout of the season as the visiting Leafs blanked the B's 2-0. Ted Kennedy, who has 5 goals in the last 4 games, and Bud Poile scored for the Leafs. In Saturday's rematch at Maple Leaf Gardens Kennedy and Harry Watson were the heroes. Watson scored three goals and Kennedy assisted on all five as the Leafs beat Boston 5-2.

The Detroit Red Wings, despite losing to lowly Chicago on Wednesday, remain atop the standings with 31 points - 7 more than the second place Rangers. New York, with 2 games in hand on Detroit, beat Boston and Montreal this week to improve to 6-0-1 in their last 7 games.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE PITTSRUGH PIRATES
After 5 straight seasons of finishing either second or third the Pirates finally won another National League Pennant - their league leading 15th. Even better news is virtually the entire cast is back for another season.

The pitching staff led by Cy Young winner Cliff Melton (28-11, 2.28) will be unchanged from a year ago. Ken Heintzelman (19-14, 3.07), Preacher Roe (14-16, 3.32) and Jim Tobin (11-4, 3.72) round out the rotation. Bill Salkeld (.237,3,17) will be the everyday catcher after replacing Tom Padden at midseason. The 38 year old Padden (.226,3,31) is coming off a broken foot that ended his season at the midway point a year ago.

Veteran 2B Tony Cuccinello (.295,18,87) will turn 39 this season but is coming off the best year of his career. 35 year old Arky Vaughan (.318,7,79) is an 8-time gold glove winner. 30 year old Bob Elliott (.275,16,87) is the baby of the infielders at age 30. First base will be split between Dick Siebert (.315,1,39) and Bill Nagel (.357,1,5). The 31 year old Nagel spent most of last season in AAA after the Pirates signed him following his release by the A's in July.

The outfield features the Pirates only young talent in 24 year old Ralph Kiner (.279,12,68). Kiner was a runner-up in rookie of the year voting and improved greatly as the season wore on. 33 year old Fern Bell (.289,5,79) patrols rightfield while 36 year old Bill Norman (.287,3,67) mans center.

The defending league champions appear to be the favourite once again this season but with an aging lineup and little help in the minors hard times appear just around the corner in Pittsburgh.

1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE ST LOUIS CARDINALS
A very successful franchise of late, the Cardinals have finished in the upper half of the National League 25 of the last 27 seasons. Included in that stretch were 11 pennants and 7 World Championships. Injuries really derailed the Redbirds a year ago and they will still have an effect when the 1947 season begins.

Two of the Cardinals 4 starting pitchers will miss opening day. Stan Ferens (5-1,2.89) who was 25-12 in 1945 and off to a great start last year before suffering a season ending back injury likely won't be available until at least May. Murry Dickson (10-15, 4.59) is also out until May after undergoing shoulder surgery last August. Dickson looks to be back to normal but there is major concern in the Cards camp that the 32 year old Ferens may never regain his pre-injury form.

The Cardinals still have some talent on the mound including 30 year old Ernie White (22-11, 2.80) who enjoyed his second straight 20 win season. 39 year old Paul Derringer (14-11, 3.69) was convinced to play one more season to help the Cardinals depleted rotation. Mort Cooper (1-0, 4.32), a 34 year old who won 21 games as a rookie in 1939 but suffered through numerous injuries since then, will also get a chance to earn a job in the spring. Harry Breechen (7-13, 3.53), who is 32 years old and coming off an arm injury that forced him to miss a month of the season, and 25 year old Al Jurisich (7-8, 4.50) add depth.

Walker Cooper (.299,11,61) is 32 and one of the best catchers in the game. He will handle the bulk of the duty but may be pressed for playing time by 24 year old prospect Del Rice who hit .368 last year in AAA despite missing 2 months with a broken leg. The Cardinals other top catching prospect, Andy Seminick, has fallen off the radar after breaking his ankle in July. It will be at least May before he can resume playing. .

The infield is led by 26 year old first baseman Stan Musial (.260,21,79). Musial began his career as an outfielder but was shifted to first base because of the outfield depth. 32 year old George Scharein (.272,6,36) at second, 29 year old shortstop Marty Marion (.302,9,57) and 28 year old Whitey Kurowski (.259,13,50) round out a solid infield. The Cardinals also have an outstanding prospect in 23 year old second baseman Red Schoendienst, who hit .321 at AAA this past season.

The Cardinals are stacked in the outfield with starters Enos Slaughter (.277,10,90), Ben Chapman (.310,3,68) and Culley Rikard (.275,4,34) and a bench that includes Terry Moore (.309,0,13), Roy Weatherly (.217,3,47) and Johnny Hopp (.231,0,11). 25 year old Dick Sisler hit 19 homers at AAA last year and he will be looking for a spot in the majors this time around.

If the pitching can hold up until Ferens and Dickson returns and if Ferens is back to his old self the Cardinals could run away with the National League. However, the early word is Ferens will not be the same pitcher he was prior to the injury. Even so the Cardinals still have enough talent to contend.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
Just a brief update on the BAA. The first year league is gaining some popularity in certain cities but for the most part remains a second class citizen. Providence and Washington lead the East Division although Philadelphia, with league scoring leader Joe Fulks, looks like a force to be reckoned with. Out west Chicago and St Louis jumped out to quick starts but lately Cleveland has been the hottest team in the league. The Rebels have a powerful offense led by Ed Sadowski and baseball player Frankie Baumholtz.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL AND BRITISH SOCCER TO APPEAR IN TSN

Just an update on my ever expanding all-sports replay. Two more sports will be added in the near future. Certainly in time for March Madness but likely well before then college basketball will make it's debut in TSN and beginning in August of 1947 both the English and Scottish first division soccer results will be published.

The college hoops will be simmed using Tournament Dreams from 400 software studios. Like the football it is a game mainly designed for modern day play so I will be taking a lot of liberties with my history. The college game will be dominated by fictional names but all future NBA draftees will be entering my universe 5 years before they turn pro. We will follow these high school phenoms through the recruiting phase and into their college career. Once they have used up their eligibility they may be drafted by the NBA. My plan for the NBA next season is to begin using Total Pro Basketball 2 from 400 software when it is released.

The soccer game will be much simplier in it's scope. I have found a quick play game and the information I need to rate teams from Scotland and England. All games will be played out but only scores and standings (or if you prefer fixtures and tables) will be documented.

Hopefully this adds just a little more to my dynasty world. I now have everything covered except for Nascar and the olympics, but I havent stopped searching for games that will allow me to sim them as well.

Wow, this is just unreal! Just a quick question (okay 3 ): Why did you have Army skip the bowls? Was that something they did in real life? And, what game will you be using for soccer?

I had Army skip the bowl game because they did not play one in real life that year. I am not certain but I do not believe Army ever accepted a bowl bid at anytime in that era, perhaps it is the same today if they were ever good enough to earn one.

I think the Ivy League schools also passed on bowl games as well but of that I am not certain.

As for the soccer I am going to use a game called Quick Soccer I found on the table top sports site.

http://www.tabletop-sports.com/modul...=getit&lid=733

It is a dice based game that will generate results very quickly. I have managed to hunt down all the data necessary for the English first divsion (it was not called the premier league then) and Scottish first divsion teams to be able to generate scores. I am still searching for individual scoring information for the era but even without it the game will suit my purpose.

actually, only about 5 hours a night. I do most of my simming between midnight and 2 am after the family have all gone to bed. I have always been a night owl.

A little bit of a delay in the next report as I am working on getting the college basketball up and running. I started my TDCB league in 1932-33 (although you can't actually change the start year from 2002-2003) and will sim some history before we pick up the reports in January of 1947.

There is very little college basketball history of any detail that I can find online so I have had to improvise a lot with this. I think I have the right schools for the most part as the dominant ones for the era. Oklahoma A&M, Holy Cross, NYU, CCNY are among those who will be powerhouses in this era.

I am adding real all-americans to the league and also all the pro players as the BAA approaches. For next season (1947-48) I am going to add TPB2 to the mix for my NBA simming. This way the college stars can be imported directly to the NBA league. However, they may not necessarily attend the same schools as they did in real life because I am creating all of them as high school seniors and letting things develop entirely within the game. It will certainly be a fictionalized history but one that I hope proves an entertaining compliment to the other sports in my universe.

Btw, these sports do seem to combine somewhat as I am discovering things like Otto Graham played college basketball as well as college football at Northwestern before joining the Browns. Many baseball players also played college hoops before their OOTP days.

Here is an early peak into the college basketball history. The scores will not represent the era properly because the game is tailored for todays conditions (3-pointer, shot clock etc) but it is still a very enjoyable game.

Great seeing all the history unfold in each of your leagues isnt it?

I wish there was a college football game to go with TPF. I have tried earlier version of FOF but just did not get into the game as much as other games I have played. Not sure why exactly but I just find TPF much more enjoyable. Also, someone has to come out with a career play NHL game that we can customize for different eras.

Looked it up and Army has played in 4 bowl games - 3 during the 80s and one in 96

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING NEWS : December 18, 1946
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
WILD FINAL WEEKEND AHEAD FOR AFC WITH TWO PLAYOFF SPOTS UP FOR GRABS
No less than five teams are still in the running for the final 2 playoff berths in the American Football Conference. Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Houston and Oakland will go down to the wire to determine who gets the two remaining openings.

Here is what has been decided so far. Denver, with a 12-3 record has won the west division and can clinch homefield throughout the playoffs with a win at home against Buffalo (6-8-1) in the final week. New England has won the AFC East and has a chance at home field throughout the playoffs. The 11-3-1 Patriots need to beat Oakland and have the Broncos lose. Either way both the Broncos and Patriots have earned a first round bye.

Tennessee (10-5) has clinched the South Division and will host a playoff game in two weeks. 10-5 Kansas City is assured of a wild card berth leaving 2 spots open.

The AFC North will come down to the wire. Cleveland (9-6) has a 1 game lead on Pittsburgh (8-7). The two clubs split their regular season games and if Pittsburgh beats Houston while the Browns lose to Indianapolis they will have identical divsion and conference records. Both could get in if they both win and the Raiders lose in New England. Houston (7-7-1) and Baltimore (7-7-1) are both still alive in the wild card hunt but they will need some help. The Texans have a little more control of their own destiny because they are playing in Pittsburgh. The Ravens play a Tennessee squad that the game means nothing to.

JUST ONE WILDCARD BERTH STILL UNDECIDED IN NFC
Five of the six playoff positions in the NFC are already filled. Chicago (13-2) has a first round bye and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. San Francisco (11-4) likely will get the second opening week bye. Philadelphia (10-5) has dropped 3 straight but still wins the NFC East Division. 9-6 New Orleans rounds out the 4 division winners. Arizona, with an 8-7 record has clinched a wildcard berth leaving just the second wildcard spot open.

Washington gets one more chance to clinch it with a win at home against San Francisco in the final week. The 7-8 Redskins have lost 4 straight and 6 of 9 since Sammy *Baugh went down with an injury. Baugh was back this week but could not end the losing skid. If Washington loses again the race is wide open. Carolina, Atlanta, Minnesota and Seattle are all at 6-9 and could sneak in to the playoffs depending upon the tiebreaker.

WEEK 16 GAME RECAPS
Pittsburgh suffered a heartbreaking 30-27 overtime loss in Cincinnati as the Bengals rallied for a last second touchdown to tie and won the game on a 53 yard Steve Modzelewski field goal. Bengals QB Ken Smith passed for 327 yards and 3 touchdowns. Smith's performance may spell the end of Bud Rutledge's days as Bengals QB.

Baltimore denied Cleveland a chance to clinch the AFC North by beating the Browns 21-14. Fabien Montgomery ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Ravens.

Denver spanked Miami 26-3 to move a step closer to securing homefield advantage for the postseason. Ed Newberry had 3 interceptions for the Broncos to raise his league leading total to 14, a new league record.

New England blasted San Diego 45-10 dashing the Chargers slim playoff hopes. Mario Glenn ran for 115 yards and a pair of New England touchdowns.

The Raiders kept their playoff chances alive and ended the Jets hopes by beating New York 24-15. After starting the season 1-3 the Raiders have rebounded nicely, winning 4 straight and are a team to fear should they get into the postseason.

Ulish Groce passed for 319 yards as Kansas City outscored Buffalo 33-26. It was a fine effort by the inconsistant Groce, who despite throwing 2 interceptions, shredded a Buffalo defense that completely shut down Chicago a week ago.

Speaking of the Bears, Sid *Luckman had another 4 touchdown passing day as Chicago mauled Tampa 38-13.

Safety Earl Joyce had an interception and a fumble recovery to help San Francisco to it's 5th straight win, 27-22 over St Louis.

Sammy *Baugh had a terrible day, throwing 5 interceptions in his first start in 8 weeks, as Washington lost 33-31 to Indianapolis. Baugh was nowhere near fully recovered from the injury he suffered at the midway point of the season, but with the Redskins playoff hopes slipping away the club decided to give him the start.

What is wrong with the Eagles? After starting the season 9-1 Philadelphia has dropped four of it's last 5 games including a 17-10 loss to Houston this past weekend.

Tennessee beat the Giants 26-16 in a game that means nothing to either club. The 10-5 Titans are in the playoffs while the 5-10 Giants are spending most of their time looking forward to the draft. One note of concern for the Titans, QB Manfred Gayle was picked off 3 times. Gayle was hurt the previous week and is not fully recovered yet.

WR Willie Nelson caught 8 passes for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns as Dallas destroyed Jacksonville 52-17. The Cowboys got 3 defensive touchdowns in the game.

Despite throwing 4 interceptions Arnie *Herber and the Atlanta Falcons hung on to beat Minnesota 27-23.

Lionel Levy kicked 7 field goals as Carolina beat Green Bay 35-13 to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

Seattle also has a longshot chance at a playoff spot after beating Arizona 16-9. Rookie Marion *Motley ran for 80 yards and made a career best 5 catches.

and New Orleans needed overtime to beat Detroit 16-13.

COLLEGE SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE BUT BOWL GAMES JUST AROUND THE CORNER
Utah pasted the Hawaiian allstars 38-7 in the lone college football game this weekend. It also marked the final regular season contest of the year. With the win Utah finishes 7-3 on the season but because they finished second to Denver in the Mountain States Conference they will not be playing in a bowl game.

The Bowl season gets underway next Sunday as 8-0-1 Rutgers takes on a 9-1 North Carolina State squad in the Cigar Bowl at Greensboro. Christmas Day has independant Nevada (9-0) put it's perfect record on the line against PCC second place finisher Stanford (6-2-1). All the major bowl games of course are scheduled for New Years Day including UCLA-Michigan in the Rose Bowl and number 2 Georgia vs 4th ranked Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
COLLEGE BASKETBALL MAKES IT'S DEBUT IN TSN
With Tournament Dreams basketball added to my gaming collection I have decided to include college basketball in this dynasty report. This game is not designed to mirror basketball of the 1940's and 50's so your imagination will need to give me a little leeway. Three point shots and shot clocks will force the scoring up compared to what really happened in that era but I did my best to make the top teams of the era be the top teams in my replay. I will also be creating every NBA player as a high school senior and begin his career in the college ranks before he graduates to the NBA and Total Pro Basketball which I will add to my dynasty report next season.

To start with the college hoops recap I figured I would post the Top 25 and a brief sentence or two on each of those clubs.

UPI TOP 25
1 USC (10-0) Won it's first outright PCC South title a year ago. Preseason number 1
2 Kentucky (11-1) Hasn't won an SEC title since 36-37. Lost in National Championship game last year
3 New York Univ (10-0) Perennial title contender is strong this season led by sophmore Dolph *Schayes
4 Boston College (11-1) Won or shared Big East title 5 times in last 14 years.
5 Iowa State (8-0) Still in search of first Big 8 title in a conference dominated by Oklahoma A&M
6 Oregon (10-1) Lou Groza's brother Alex *Groza and Dick *Triptow lead strong Ducks team in search of PCC North title
7 UTEP (10-0) Final Four team a year ago
8 Alabama (8-1) Defending National champs have won SEC three of last 4 years
9 Holy Cross (11-2) Made 4 straight final four appearances to start the 1940's
10 New Orleans (10-0) Privateers are off to surprising start
11 Washington St. ( 9-2) PCC North powerhouse lost all-american Bud *Milliken but replaced him with freshman Ed *Gayda.
12 UCLA (8-2) Bruins have won 10 PCC South titles in last 15 years.
13 N.C. State (9-1) Final four team two years ago is always a threat in March
14 Auburn (9-1) traditional weak sister of the SEC is off to a fine start
15 Illinois (8-2) back to back Big Ten champs
16 Washington (9-3) yet another representative from the powerful PCC North
17 Ohio State (9-2) Paul *Huston and Arnie *Risen lead Buckeyes in quest for first Big 10 title in 8 years
18 Drake (9-2) look to be the team to beat in Missouri Valley Conference
19 Stanford (8-2) overshadowed by UCLA and USC in PCC South. Did win conference 2 years ago.
20 CCNY (8-2) battle with Holy Cross and NYU for top of East Independant conference.
21 Notre Dame (8-2) Won National Championship 2 years ago - 2nd win in 8 years
22 Georgia (8-2) Won SEC title 2 years ago. Junior Mel *McGaha is a candidate for conference player of the year
23 Baylor (7-2) Won 3 SWC titles in past 7 years
24 Iowa (8-2) - middle of the road Big 10 club off to fast start but real test is conference play
25 Louisiana State (7-2) - Like Iowa off to a quick start but real test occurs when conference play begins.

Others Receiving Votes: San Francisco 158, Texas Tech 147, Western Kentucky 126, South Carolina 105, Bradley 84, Florida 62, Creighton 42, Miami 21, Middle Tenn St. 10, Oklahoma 6, Wake Forest 2, VMI 2, Purdue 1, California 1, Gonzaga 1, Seton Hall 1, Vanderbilt 1, Texas Christian 1, Richmond 1, Georgetown 1, Indiana State 1.

Dropped out of Top 25: No. 22 Oklahoma, No. 15 California, No. 13 Vanderbilt

College basketball coverage will get much more detailed as the season progresses.

HOLY CROSS ON CRUSADE FOR NATIONAL TITLE
The Holy Cross Crusaders have some unfinished business to attend to during the 1946-47 college basketball season. With four trips to the NCAA tournaments final four, the Crusaders have been one of the most successful schools over the past decade but the one thing that has eluded them is a victory on the final Monday of the college season. This year with the addition of two fabulous freshman guards Holy Cross fans feel the championship crusade may finally be a success.

No school has ever recruited a better backcourt than the pair that Holy Cross added this season. Bob *Cousy looks like a surefire BAA star down the road while Frank *Oftring also has great potential. Both have been thrown into the starting lineup right off the bat and after an 11-2 start the two guards are already playing like seasoned veterans rather than raw teenagers.

Cousy is averaging 10.3 points a game and nearly 6 assists. Oftring his averaging 7.2 points but has struggled with his shooting in the early going. He showed a glimpse of what he can become last week when he lit up Fordham for 23 points.

With a playoff savy group of big men including senior center Bob *Hubbard and junior forward Phil *Farbman to guide them, don't be surprised if the young guards get their squad to the final four yet again. The question is can they finally win it all?

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
RED HOT LEAFS HAVE OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION
The Toronto Maple Leafs offense came alive last week winning three games by a combined score of 19-4. That performance, keyed by the play of captain Teeder Kennedy, moved the Leafs right into the thick of the National Hockey League playoff race. Things are looking much brighter around Maple Leaf Gardens than they did just two weeks ago when the Leafs, riding a 4-game losing streak plummetted to 5-9-1. Since then Toronto has accumulated 5 wins and a tie in their past 7 games. The reason: improved team defense in front of goaltender Turk Broda plus the play of Kennedy. The veteran center has 14 points in his last 7 games and trails only the Blackhawks Max Bentley for the NHL scoring lead.

BOXING RECAP
ARCHIE MOORE'S CAREER APPEARS TO BE NEARING END
What was supposed to be the bout that helped Archie Moore climb up the heavyweight ranks ended up becoming the fight that possibly put an end to his career. Embrell Davidson a 22 year old fighter with some promise took a big step forward by stopping Moore with a second round TKO in the headliner of a Friday night fight card at The Olympia in Detroit.

Davidson, who hails from the Motor City, improved his record to 25-6 while Moore falls to 16-7. Davidson is considered a future force in the heavyweight division and he is on the verge of cracking the top 10 in his weight class worldwide.

On the undercard, in a battle of middleweights Rocky Graziano won a unanimous decision in a very entertaining fight over Youngstown, Ohio middleweight Tony Janiro. Both fighters spent some time on the canvas in a spirited effort The win improves Graziano's record to 31-14-1 while Janiro falls to 17-12-3. Graziano has won the bouts he should win but he just hasn't been able to come up with the big effort when given a great opportunity. He has had plenty of opportunities, losing to middleweight champ Jake Lamotta on 3 occassions, twice each to Tony Zale and Ray Robinson and once to Charley Burley. Burley, Zale and Robinson are considered to be among the top 5 active middleweights.

I am 2 issues from naming the TSN Athlete of the Year for 1946. Among the favourites include:

Charlie Trippi who led Georgia to a perfect season entering the bowl games.
Joe Louis who dismantled all opponents en route to the post war Heavyweight championship of the world.
Bears QB Sid Luckman who helped his team to a conference title in January and is dominating the league this season.
Cliff Melton - ace Pittsburgh Pirates hurler

Any feedback on these or any other candidates you deem worthy is appreciated.

Sid Luckman.

TF, would you mind posting Ulish Groce's career stats and a brief history of Kentucky basketball?

BTW, if you haven't already you should check out NASCAR Grandstand. It doesn't have ratings for that far back, but with the work you do I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem. I don't know when the Winston Cup started (1949, I think) but I would read the recaps.

And lastly, have you been able to find anything for the Olympics? The next Olympiad isn't until '48 so hopefully you'll be able to get something for that.

I have looked at nascar grandstand and found a site with full Nascar results starting in 1949 so I am considering adding it. Site is www.racing-reference.com btw.

The olympics will likely be too difficult to do because of the number of sports involved and the small amount of historical data besides medal winners available.

I began simming my college basketball history in 1932-33, using almost entirely fictional players until about 1940 just to build some history. From 1940 on I am adding all americans and all the real NBA players 4 years before their actual pro basketball debut. I will post a history of Kentucky basketball and a Ulish Groce recap late tonight or tomorrow.

thanks for your suggestions and interest in this replay....and Luckman is likely the favourite for Sportsman of the Year but Louis and Trippi also will receive heavy consideration.
