1908 The New York Giants pulled of an amazing season in 1907. They went from 7th place in 1906 to posting their franchise's first winning season in 1907 en route to a World Series upset of the 100-win Cleveland Broncos. Both the Giants and the Broncos appear to be teams on the upswing. They both have a lot of young, talented players who can perform for them for many seasons to come. Cleveland is the early favorite to repeat in the AL, but no one has repeated the AL pennant since the Browns' organization did it in 1901-02. New York's incredible pitching staff puts them are nearly even par with the Broncos, and those two teams should duke it out again this season. Remember, the Highlanders had the 2nd best record in baseball last season. The Philadelphia A's are still serious contenders, and with solid pitching staffs in St. Louis and Washington, those two teams will be competitive too. The Giants are certainly talented, but many players are still young enough to question the team's ability to repeat. They are among the favorites, but the Cubs have a well-rounded team, and even Boston will be strong. Brooklyn will be competitive, but it is doubtful they will be able to put together enough victories to take the pennant. Ancestors Added NONE Last edited by Matt from TN; 01-31-2005 at 10:34 AM. |

The Phillies got off to a great start in the NL, and they have the best record in baseball so far. They are in first, but the Cubs are hot on their trail. After winning their last 6 games, Chicago is just one game off the lead. The Phillies' offense has powered them so far, and the Cubs are winning with a very strong pitching staff that is led by hurlers such as Bowie Castellon, who is 4-1 with a 0.73 ERA. At 9-13, the defending World champion Giants are in last place, but they are just 5 games off the lead Cleveland has gotten off to a strong 14-9 start, leading the AL by one game over St. Louis. Several teams have played well so far, and every AL team except Boston is no more than 2.5 games off the lead. Batters of the Month: AL - Ralph Nida, 3B, St. Louis Browns - He hit .425 with 15 RBI and 12 runs scored. NL - Stephan Andrews, RF, Philadelphia Phillies - He hit .377 with 14 RBI and 8 runs scored. Pitchers of the Month: AL - "Shepard" McBean, Washington Senators - He was 6-0 with a 1.17 ERA. NL - Bowie Castellon, Chicago Cubs - He was 4-1 with a 0.73 ERA, including 2 shutouts. American League Standings Cleveland 14 9 .609 - St. Louis (A) 12 9 .571 1.0 Detroit 11 10 .524 2.0 New York (A) 11 10 .524 2.0 Chicago (A) 11 11 .500 2.5 Philadelphia (A) 11 11 .500 2.5 Washington 11 11 .500 2.5 Boston (A) 6 16 .273 7.5 National League Standings Philadelphia (N) 14 8 .636 - Chicago (N) 13 9 .591 1.0 Cincinnati 11 10 .524 2.5 Brooklyn 10 11 .476 3.5 Pittsburgh 10 11 .476 3.5 St. Louis (N) 10 11 .476 3.5 Boston (N) 9 13 .409 5.0 New York (N) 9 13 .409 5.0 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .284 with 9 RBI and 8 runs scored. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - He hit .263 (5 for 19) with 3 RBI, 6 runs scored and the first homerun of his career, which he hit on April 15 against Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, he still hasn't won a starting job. Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .250 (3 for 12) in limited duty off the bench. Dummy Netsky, SP, Boston (A) - Dummy has become one of Boston's top pitchers, but that's not necessarily saying a lot with the team's struggles. He was 1-4 with a 4.79 ERA on the month. Cleveland struggled at 15-14 in May, which allowed New York, St. Louis and Washington to become equal parts of the early pennant race. Each of those teams were at least tied for the lead at some point during the month. The Highlanders currently lead the league after going 18-12 on the month. All of these four teams are no more than 1-game out. However, the Browns will be without their ace Raymond Gindler until early July. He left his May 19 start with elbow pain. Pittsburgh went 18-9 in May to put a charge into the NL pennant race. Cincinnati went 16-11. The Reds took first place briefly before a late-month slump. The Phillies remain in first place, currently 1.5 games ahead of the surprising Pirates. Batters of the Month: AL - Floyd Kubitzki, SS, Washington Senators - He hit .413 with 17 RBI and 14 runs scored. NL - Woody Woodson, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit an unprecedented .490 with 16 RBI and 24 runs scored!!! He leads the NL with a .440 average. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Jeremy Kalandros, Washington Senators - He was 6-0 with a 0.67 ERA, including 2 shutouts. NL - David Nelson, Cincinnati Reds - He was 5-1 with a 1.23 ERA. American League Standings New York (A) 29 22 .569 - St. Louis (A) 28 22 .560 .5 Cleveland 29 23 .558 .5 Washington 28 23 .549 1.0 Philadelphia (A) 26 25 .510 3.0 Detroit 23 27 .460 5.5 Boston (A) 20 29 .408 8.0 Chicago (A) 19 31 .380 9.5 National League Standings Philadelphia (N) 30 19 .612 - Pittsburgh 28 20 .583 1.5 Cincinnati 27 21 .563 2.5 Brooklyn 26 23 .531 4.0 Chicago (N) 25 25 .500 5.5 St. Louis (N) 22 26 .458 7.5 Boston (N) 20 29 .408 10.0 New York (N) 17 32 .347 13.0 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .301 with 8 RBI and 12 runs scored. He's a long way off from his great 2007 season, and hitting just .293 overall. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - He had one of his best months, hitting .429 (9 for 21) with 7 RBI and 5 runs scored. The everyday 1B, Lukas Pottinger is 37, but he's hitting .341 on the season and remaining the starter. Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .266 (17 for 64) with 2 RBI and 7 runs scored. He was inserted in the #2 slot as the starting CF when the everyday CF Bill Prugh was hit by a pitch on May 19 and missed the rst of the month. Prugh is expected to be back in 2 days, though. Dummy Netsky, SP, Boston (A) - Dummy had a horrendous May, going 0-3 with a 10.62 ERA in 4 starts. He is 1-7 with a 6.71 ERA on the season. |

New York and Cleveland came out of the 4-team jumble atop the American League this month. The Highlanders lead the league by a half-game over the Broncos. As has been well noted, New York wins with pitching. Their four starters could each be a staff ace on several teams - "Johnny Cakes" Sutton (9-10, 2.35), 25-year-old Howard Adams (12-5, 1.88), who was actually acquired in a 1901 trade from Cleveland, Otto Stidham (11-7, 2.99) and Jassen Nelson (8-6, 2.84). Together, the Highlanders lead all of baseball with a 2.51 team ERA. On the other hand, Cleveland leads with a great offense that leads baseball in almost every category. They have the AL's top two hitters in the batting race. Second baseman Willie Vedros leads the AL at .355 and shortstop Clyde Kreisle is second at .346. Surprisingly, the two-time batting champ Whiskey Allen is hitting just .296. He has the best career batting average in the AL at .350 and he has never hit below .300 in his 7-year career. The Phillies got off to another good start in the NL, but Pittsburgh came on strong. The Pirates were 16-12, including a 6-1 stretch late in the month. The defending World Champion Giants are mired in last place, but they showed signs of life by going 17-10 in June. However, they're still 10 games back. Batters of the Month: AL - Donny Engel, SS, Philadelphia Athletics - He hit .405 with 10 RBI and 23 runs scored. NL - "Butterball" Klehammer, C, New York Giants - He hit .352 with 23 RBI and 15 runs scored. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Howard Adams, New York Highlanders - He was 4-1 with a 1.21 ERA, including 1 shutout. NL - Bowie Castellon, Chicago Cubs - He was 5-1 with a 1.19 ERA, including 2 shutouts. American League Standings New York (A) 46 31 .597 - Cleveland 46 32 .590 .5 Philadelphia (A) 43 35 .551 3.5 Washington 38 39 .494 8.0 Detroit 38 40 .487 8.5 St. Louis (A) 37 41 .474 9.5 Chicago (A) 32 47 .405 15.0 Boston (A) 31 46 .403 15.0 National League Standings Philadelphia (N) 44 32 .579 - Pittsburgh 44 32 .579 - Cincinnati 40 36 .526 4.0 Chicago (N) 36 39 .480 7.5 Brooklyn 35 39 .473 8.0 Boston (N) 35 41 .461 9.0 St. Louis (N) 34 41 .453 9.5 New York (N) 34 42 .447 10.0 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .300 with 8 RBI and 13 runs scored. He's hitting .296 overall and flirting with his first sub-.300 season. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .333 (9 for 27) with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. May and July have been the best back-to-back months of his short career. He continues to split time at 1B, 3B and RF. To his credit, he's only made 1 error (at 3B) in a total of 157.1 defensive innings. Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .260 (20 for 77) with 6 RBI and 8 runs scored. He got a lot of playing time despite not being a regular starter. He has played 29 games in CF, but he has also played 11 games split between C, LF and RF. Dummy Netsky, SP, Boston (A) - Netsky got things together after an ugly May. In June, he was 2-3 with a 4.14 ERA in 7 starts. On a bad note, he suffered talent hits in 3 areas - avoiding hits, avoiding walks and getting K's. |

ALL WEB PAGES ARE UPDATED, INCLUDING PLAYER PAGES
August 1, 1908 The Highlanders took a 4-game lead in the AL after going 17-7 in July. Cleveland went just 14-11, falling further behind. The Broncos lack of power may be a factor. They have hit only 9 home runs as a team this season, but they still lead all of baseball in all other major offensive categories. Their picthing staff takes the bulk of the blame for slumping so far from last season's miraculous 100-win performance. 25-year-old Ervin "Musclehead" Smith is 14-8 with a 2.82 ERA in just his second season as a full-time starter, but the team's other three starters have dipped from last season's production. Last year's AL POTY Patrick De Leon is just 13-9 with a 3.77 ERA, up from last season's 2.33 ERA. Pittsburgh went 18-7 in July, surging ahead of the Phillies, who treaded water at 14-12. The Pirates' offense is suddenly productive. They are 2nd only to Cleveland in runs scored and batting average. Their main contributor is rightfielder Scott Podlasek (.302, 7 HR, 51 RBI), who has been one of the top, if not unknown, offensive threats in baseball for years. He is the all-time leader in home runs, RBI and doubles. The Pirates' pitching has been lifted by an unsung duo. 29-year-old Dave Zike has been a rare find. He never started a game before this season, but his career bullpen ERA was under 1.00. This season, he is 16-7 with a 2.54 ERA including 17 complete games and 5 shutouts. 26-year-old Derek Callery is having a career year in just his second season (overachieving according to many scouts). He is 15-8 with a 2.54 ERA, but he is currently nursing a bad back which should shelve him for 2 more weeks. The New York Giants have apparently given up on repeating this season. They were 14-16 on the month, although they managed to slip out of last place. They shocked the NL by trading their star second baseman Jed Burke to the White Sox for pitcher E.J. White. Before White could even get on a train to New York, they traded him to the Boston Pilgrims for young starter Dummy Netsky. They then returned to the White Sox and acquired second baseman Michael Ravon in exchange for 22-year-old pitcher Dex Wolfe and 19-year-old second baseman Wes Sergeant. Burke was just 22 and had a .319 career average. He was hitting .349 this season. His replacement, Ravon, is 32 with a career .249 average. Rumors have surfaced that Burke and Giants ownership had a rocky relationship for several years, and this was bound to happen. That may explain why Burke was shipped to the other league. Batters of the Month: AL - Patrick Seifried, 1B, Cleveland Broncos - He hit .451 with 22 RBI and 24 runs scored. This is his 2nd BOTM award, and he's just 24. NL - Scott Podlasek, RF, Pittsburgh Pirates - He hit .367 with 3 homers, 15 RBI and 20 runs scored. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Raymond Gindler, St. Louis Browns - He was 4-0 with a 0.25 ERA. In 4 starts, he pitched 4 complete games and 3 were shutouts. Not bad for a guy coming off shoulder problems and not having pitched since May 19th. This guy is something else! He's 33-years-old and he has 7 POTM Awards and 3 POTY Awards to his credit. He also has a career record of 171-82 with a 1.96 ERA and 48 shutouts. All three totals are best all time. NL - David Nelson, Cincinnati Reds - He was 4-2 with a 0.84 ERA, including 2 shutouts. American League Standings New York (A) 63 38 .624 - Cleveland 60 43 .583 4.0 Philadelphia (A) 55 46 .545 8.0 Detroit 52 51 .505 12.0 Washington 49 52 .485 14.0 St. Louis (A) 47 55 .461 16.5 Boston (A) 42 58 .420 20.5 Chicago (A) 39 64 .379 25.0 National League Standings Pittsburgh 62 39 .614 - Philadelphia (N) 58 44 .569 4.5 Cincinnati 54 46 .540 7.5 Chicago (N) 52 50 .510 10.5 Boston (N) 46 54 .460 15.5 Brooklyn 45 55 .450 16.5 New York (N) 44 58 .431 18.5 St. Louis (N) 43 58 .426 19.0 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey returned to form this month, hitting .415 with 15 RBI, 23 runs scored and his first home run of the season. His season average has climbed to .328. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle, who has been very inconsistent over his short career, hit .161 (5 for 31) with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .152 (5 for 33) with 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Dummy Netsky, SP, Boston (A) - Netsky was 4-1 with a 3.72 ERA, including a shutout of Washington on July 24th. Shockingly, he was traded on July 31st to the National League's New York Giants. He has yet to make his first NL start, but he is listed as the Giants' #3 starter. In return for Dummy, the Pilgrims got 31-year-old pitcher E. J. White, and an unknown young catcher. The New York Highlanders had an outstanding 21-8 month, leaving little doubt as to who the best team in the AL is. Cleveland went just 14-13 in August, falling 10-games back with just 4 weeks remaining in the season. On a bad note for New York, their ace "Johnny Cakes" Sutton reported pain in his throwing arm after finishing a 1-0 complete game victory against the White Sox on August 28th. He isn't expected to pitch again during the regular season, but he should return to the active roster in time for the World Series, if New York does indeed win the AL pennant. Replacing him in the rotation will be Rickie Allen, who is 9-2 with a 2.05 ERA in 92 innings (16 G, 10 GS). Pittsburgh got off to a great start in August, but they finished on a 4-game losing streak and a 13-16 overall record on the month. The Phillies were unable to cash in on the Pirates' struggles. They were just 15-14 on the month. Cincinnati moved into 2nd Place for a time, but they lost 8 of their last 10 games and dropped back to 4th. Batters of the Month: AL - Tee Carver, RF, Cleveland Broncos - He hit .375 with 18 RBI and 10 runs scored. NL - Tarren "The Turtle" Peldmulder, RF, Cincinnati Reds - He hit .404 with 14 RBI and 18 runs scored. Pitchers of the Month: AL - "Johnny Cakes" Sutton, New York Highlanders - He was 5-1 with a 0.33 ERA, including 3 shutouts. No wonder New York is doing so well. He has 19 wins on the season, but unfortunately, he isn't expected to pitch again until the World Series. NL - Albert Scharf, Philadelphia Phillies - He was 5-1 with a 2.03 ERA, including 2 shutouts. American League Standings New York (A) 84 46 .646 - Cleveland 74 56 .569 10.0 Philadelphia (A) 71 59 .546 13.0 Washington 62 68 .477 22.0 Detroit 60 70 .462 24.0 Boston (A) 59 71 .454 25.0 St. Louis (A) 56 74 .431 28.0 Chicago (A) 54 76 .415 30.0 National League Standings Pittsburgh 75 55 .577 - Philadelphia (N) 73 58 .557 2.5 Chicago (N) 69 61 .531 6.0 Cincinnati 68 61 .527 6.5 Brooklyn 62 68 .477 13.0 New York (N) 59 71 .454 16.0 Boston (N) 58 71 .450 16.5 St. Louis (N) 56 75 .427 19.5 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .224 with 6 RBI and 13 runs scored. That awful month dropped him to .307 on the season. The lowest average of his career is .329 in 1903. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle rebounded, hitting .354 (17 for 48) with 8 RBI and 3 runs scored. Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .263 (15 for 57) with 4 RBI and 4 runs scored. Dummy Netsky, SP, New York (N) - Netsky did well in his NL debut, going 3-3 with a 3.68 ERA, including 2 complete games. His first NL win came on his 4th start. It was a complete game victory against Cincinnati on August 16th in which he allowed just 2 runs. |

WEB OUTPUT UPDATED TO END OF SEASON... INCLUDES PLAYER PAGES AND WORLD SERIES BOX SCORES
September 30, 1908 The Highlanders wrapped up the AL pennant with two weeks remaining in the season. They were 18-6 on the month and managed to set a new all-time win total with 102 victories, just one season after Cleveland set the mark at 100. Even though "Johnny Cakes" Sutton missed the last month of the season and finished with 19 wins, the Highlanders 4 starting pitchers finished with 24, 23, 19 and 18 wins. Sutton has recovered from his arm woes and will be ready for a Game 2 start in the World Series. Pittsburgh went 17-7 in September and easily wrapped up their first NL pennant. They have a balanced attack, but no World Series experience among them. While their offense was arguably the best in the NL, it will be interesting to see how they fare against the daunting Highlander pitching. Yet, the Pirates have some great pitching of their own. They are only the second team in baseball history to sport 4 20-game winners. The other was the great 1904 Boston Beaneaters. Batters of the Month: AL - Jeff Young, 2B, New York Highlanders - He hit .411 with 23 RBI and 20 runs scored. NL - Woody Woodson, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit .379 with 11 RBI and 18 runs scored. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Otto Stidham, New York Highlanders - He was 5-0 with a 1.20 ERA. NL - Bowie Castellon, Chicago Cubs - He was 6-0 with a 1.77 ERA. American League Standings New York (A) 102 52 .662 - Cleveland 91 63 .591 11.0 Philadelphia (A) 81 73 .526 21.0 Detroit 74 80 .481 28.0 Boston (A) 70 84 .455 32.0 Washington 70 84 .455 32.0 Chicago (A) 66 88 .429 36.0 St. Louis (A) 62 92 .403 40.0 National League Standings Pittsburgh 92 62 .597 - Chicago (N) 84 70 .545 8.0 Cincinnati 82 72 .532 10.0 Philadelphia (N) 81 73 .526 11.0 Brooklyn 73 81 .474 19.0 New York (N) 73 81 .474 19.0 Boston (N) 66 88 .429 26.0 St. Louis (N) 65 89 .422 27.0 World Series As has been written over and over, the Highlanders pitching staff is amazing. The frightening thing is the fact that their offense has come around also, finishing the season with the 4th best batting average and 4th most runs scored in baseball. Not to be outdone, Pittsburgh weilds a dangerous pitching staff of their own, and the 2nd best offense in the game. If the Pirates have a weakness, it's the fact that their pitchers were apt to allowing frequent walks, although their total was still the 7th best in baseball. This should be a very even matchup, although the Highlanders are surrounded by the most hoopla, while the Pirates remain relatively unknown. Prediction: This is an evenly matched World Series which could go either way. My choice is the Highlanders in 6 if for no other reason than the fact that their pitching is just a little better than Pittsburgh's and they have more experience. New York 3 - Pittsburgh 2: New York's Rickie Allen and Pittsburgh's Sam Covallini combined for an exciting 2-2 tie through 9 innings. In the top of the 10th, Allen hit a leadoff triple to help his own cause. He later scored on a single by rightfielder Justin Tucker. That run was the difference. New York 2 - Pittsburgh 3: Both teams through out their aces - "Johnny Cakes" Sutton for the Highlanders and Dave Zike for the Pirates. With a 1-1 tie through 7 1/2 innings, Pittsburgh took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 8th. In the top of the 9th, New York got a runner on first with one out. Justin Achman doubled, but the runner was gunned out at home to preserve Pittsburgh's one-run lead. The next hitter stroked an RBI double, however, to tie the game. In the bottom of the 9th, the leadoff hitter was hit by Sutton and was awarded first base. Leftfielder "Succotash" Borkholder hit an RBI double to win the game. Pittsburgh 6 - New York 7: With the score tied 2-2, Pittsburgh scored 4 runs in the 7th. The Highlanders scored a single run in the 7th and added 4 more in the 8th to win. Pittsburgh 2 - New York 8: The Highlanders scored early and often on Covallini, easily winning this game and taking a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. Pittsburgh 2 - New York 1: Sutton and Zike combined for another exciting game, but Zike once again came out on top. New York 4 - Pittsburgh 0: Jassen Nelson pitched a gem allowing no runs on six hits and no walks. Ron Theroux, on the other hand, struggled again allowing 4 runs which gave New York their first World Series title. WOW... I actually got a prediction right... hit in on the head too... Jassen Nelson was named World Series MVP. He was 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA, including the decisive Game 6 win. Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .421 in just 9 September games to finish at .316 on the season, the lowest total of his career. He missed 2 weeks witha torn hip muscle. Final: .316, 2 HR, 49 RBI, 74 R, 474 AB, 150 H, 13 2B, 10 3B, 38 K, 32 BB, 38-15 SB, .757 OPS Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .345 (10 for 29) with 5 RBI in September. Except for a miserable July, he had the best season of his career. Final: .314, 1 HR, 29 RBI, 20 R, 175 AB, 55 H, 8 2B, 3 3B, 14 K, 16 BB, 1-1 SB, .781 OPS... He set career highs in hits, HR, RBI, runs, AVG, OBP, SLG and OPS. Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty struggled again in September, hitting just .143 (5 for 35). Final: .234, 1 HR, 16 RBI, 22 R, 278 AB, 65 H, 10 2B, 1 3B, 33 K, 14 BB, 2-0 SB, .565 OPS... He set career highs in games, AB, H, 2B, runs and K's. Dummy Netsky, SP, New York (N) - Dummy was 2-1 with a 2.29 ERA and a shutout in 6 September starts. He seems to have taken off in the NL, and his final stats were decent, considering his lousy start. Final: 12-15, 4.33 ERA, 35 GS, 241 IP, 256 H, 116 ER, 105 BB, 75 K, 5 CG, 3 SHO, 1.50 WHIP... He set career highs in starts, wins, IP, H, ER, BB, K's, CG and SHO. Yes, I ran the Ammy Draft after my last post above, but I was so bamboozled when the Red Sox tossed their cookies, that I had to go to sleep... I'm not a Sox fan, but a Big, Big Yankees hater... Fists is in the game, and I'll be posting about it sometime today... |
