Seattle is working on a 18 year, $470 million mega deal with Julio Rodriguez that would be the richest in sports history.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/...ez-sources-say

Edit: Deal is signed as per multiple sources. Hoping for a multiple World Series career from Julio!

The structure of the Julio contract is really interesting, 8/120 base contract with a team option after that for either 8/200 or 10/350 depending on some performance thresholds (assumed to be multiple MVPs). If the team option is declined, then there is a player option for 5/90.

Seems like a great deal for either side. If everything goes right, it's a 18 year 470M deal for basically Julio's whole career. Worst case scenario it's a 13/210 which is also fairly reasonable.

I wonder how this will be model in OOTP, because I'm pretty sure there isn't anyway for the game to handle this as is.

I'm doubting it is multiple MVP wins. I am guessing it is top 3 or top 5 in the voting.

Looks like it is even more complicated, the team option escalates as follows per Passan and Rosenthal,
- $240MM over eight years with two or three top ten finishes
- $260MM over eight years with four top ten finishes
- $280MM over eight years if he wins an MVP and finishes in the top five once more or finishes in the top five of MVP balloting on three occasions
- $350MM over ten years if he wins two MVP awards or finishes among the top five in balloting on four occasions

I realize this particular deal is a historic record breaking contract, but does this sort of thing happen frequently in baseball? By that I mean signing a rookie to a huge massive extension?

Like no doubt Rodriguez is a great player, but as of today his entire professional career is a pretty small sample size. So why the hurry to lock him up until he collects social security? What if he crashes head first into a sophomore jinx? Or even worse, tanks completely so his rookie season turns out to be his best career year?

If you're sitting in the GM's chair, don't you want to see him string together two or three good years before ponying up this kind of dough?

I'm sure the mitigating circumstances are:

1) The Mariners are the team with with the longest playoff drought in major sports.

2) Players(Griffey, Johnson, A-Rod, Wilson in football) have a history of leaving for other cities in Seattle.

3) Rodriguez looks like he is that good and in the 2030s salaries may have risen to the point that this is a steal.

7 game winning streak...this is looking like it could be the second best regular season in Mariners history. If we can get to the World Series it might be the best, but that's a large ask.

Nothing like backing into the playoffs...on the other hand, a) not gonna complain if we get in, and b) hopefully we'll have a healthy JRod and Suarez.

I just hope they don't back "out" of the playoffs

I'm sure once the Orioles are 2 or 1 games behind us, we'll start to wake up a little(I hope...)

I think part of the issue is Scott Serviases mild mannered nature. He doesn't get upset much, is pretty much even keel. Servais is a great Xs and Os manager, but I'm not sure that he's great at managing players. He doesn't seem to be the type of guy that players want to get up and go to battle for. If the Mariners underperform or don't make the playoffs for some reason, I think they might need to start looking at other options.

Yeah, no sense of urgency. It's often tough to manufacture, especially in the face of the human instinct to coast.

One would hope that the schedule (Orioles v Astros, whereas M's in Kansas City) would be a benefit, even if it wasn't last night.

But, yeah, 3-7 in the last 10 doesn't exactly spell "Pennant Drive". Best of luck.

Unfortunately the mariners do worse against bad teams this year.

The Mariners did sign Castillo to a 5 year contract so that's good.

Surely the Marlins' woes isn't Don Mattingley's fault? If the Mariners don't make it out of the first round should we look into replacing Servaise with Mattingly?

I was watching the Sea-KC matchup hoping for a Seattle win so the Red Sox would be eliminated officially. Yes, I am that kind of Yankee fan that enjoys my rival's demise. I thought the Mariners had it, but KC came roaring back. Now i am hoping the Yankees can make it official tonight so we can move closer to locking up the AL east.

Went to the Mariners vs. KC game last night -- fun game and was a battle to the end. Was really hoping to see Julio play but just didn't work out for this trip. Today's game looked crazy!

My deepest condolences on that dreadful 6th inning yesterday. At least Baltimore also lost, so you still whittled away at the Magic Number.

Watching Kelenic lose the crucial fly ball in the sun, I'm almost tempted to heresy. Is it possible that…the Mets actually won that trade? Edlose Diaz's copious 2019/2021 failings and Robinson Cano being the overpaid cheating trash we always knew he was aside…if Kelenic stiffs as badly as Justin Dunn is doing in Cincy, then at least we got something for practically nothing. Huh.
