You have probably noticed, if you have read much at all, that I have been lamenting our inability to get the opposing pitchers out. But since there is nowhere I can find where anyone has written this information down so I could look it up, I went back through the box scores and compiled their stats myself to see if I really had any complaint or if it was just me noticing the bad times and skipping over the good times, as is my wont. I can now say with confidence that I have not been exaggerating the problem by much. For the season, opposing pitchers are hitting .243 against us with 8 doubles and a triple, 18 runs scored and 15 RBI. In April, they hit .292 and it got my attention. In May, we got a better handle on the situation and they hit .171. But in June, they are back to mashing us even harder with a .286 batting average and a slugging average of .405! The Jays only have 4 players slugging over .400 on the season and only Mike Volkman (33-L) is much over .400. Our pitchers are batting .140. They have scored 5 runs and have 6 RBI, while their opponents have scored 18 runs and have 15 RBI, a 3 to 1 deficit in production.

That is the level of commitment we are expecting here! Well done - head down, and burying right down to the source of the problem!

Today is Junior Danielson's 30th birthday!

We are back home to play Charlotte a 3 games series through the weekend. They just won 2 games at home versus Louisville and have an 8 game winning streak going. We lost 3 of 4 games the first time they visited us, April 26-29. The Hornets are 4th in scoring with 4.30 runs per game (Jacksonville is #12 with 3.73). They are 2nd in the League in walks (290) and we are 2nd to last (212). They are 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.76 per game (Jacksonville is still last with 5.28). Their run differential is +43, 2nd best in the League to Memphis (+48), and we are at -121, 50 runs worse than Hartford, the 2nd worst team.

He allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 13 on 145 pitches, but had a no decision and the Pelicans lost, 2 to 1, in 11 innings. The 13 strikeouts ties the MLB record set by Steve Weston (25-L) of Rochester in April.

Down on the Farm: The Montgomery Biscuits of the American Association (A) lost at the Tampa Tarpons, 7 to 6, ending their 16 game winning streak. Surprisingly, none of their wins during the streak were against Daytona. They are 54-28 (.659) and have a 7 game lead in the South Division and are 33 games ahead of last place Daytona, who are 21-61 (.256). The Biscuits are the affiliate of the Birmingham Barons.

We have not faced Lutes before. He is 3-0 in his last 5 starts and has pitched better in his no decisions than in his wins. Last time out, he gave up 4 runs on 7 hits, a home run, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts in 7 innings in a win.

Cook started the season 0-3, but pitched well and had a 2.57 ERA after 4 starts. But then it all fell apart. He was 2-2 with a 4.93 ERA in 5 starts for Daytona, but the 2 wins were his last two starts and in his last one, he struck out 13.

The Hartford Whalers are here to finish out our season series with them in a 4 game series through the weekend and take us to the All-Break, when everyone on our team will get a 3 day vacation. We split 4 games with them at their place, May 28-31. They just split a pair of games with the Roosters in Rochester. They are 6th in scoring with 4.18 runs per game (Jacksonville is #12 with 3.67). The Whalers are 15th in fewest runs allowed with 4.92 per game (Jacksonville is last with 5.13). They have allowed 72 HR, the 3rd most, but we have allowed the most (77). They also have the 2nd worst BA against at .270, but ours makes theirs look pretty good (.288). Their run differential is -62, the 2nd worst in the League, and ours is -121.

We put SS Leander Gooding (30-R) of the DL and called up 2B Rick Dundore (35-R). He only hit .175 for the Jays earlier in the season, but is mashing it at a .214 clip for Daytona! 2B Ed Diskin (37-R) ought to be available to play within a week.

In some good news, Trudy reports that OF Joe Roberts is all healed up, including his elbow that has bothered him for over 2 months! She says, though, that we should keep him in left to keep the strain on that elbow to a minimum. Editor's Note: His rating in CF has dropped.

The South scored 5 times in the bottom of the 1st inning, after Victor Espinoza, the ex-Jay, retired the side in order in the top of the inning. Eli Kyzar (29-R) of Syracuse started the game, because voted starter, Juan Ledesma, was not rested enough to pitch. Dick Pavlov hit a 3 run home run and was named MVP. He went 2 for 2 in the game. John Hartz followed his blast in the 1st with a solo shot. Sergio Acevedo (27-R) of Birmingham hit a home run in the 7th.

Birmingham led all teams with 7 players on the squad. Memphis had 6 and Richmond, Buffalo and Ottawa each had 5. The Jacksonville Jays were the only team with no player named to the teams.

The American Association (A) also had their All-Star Game today and no one from Daytona made the team. The Montgomery Biscuits led all teams with 7 players, just as their parent club, Birmingham, had led the MLB. The South Division won, 3 to 2. LF Ricky Rodriguez (29-L) of Montgomery went 1 for 1 with an 8th inning solo home run to win MVP honors.

2B Ed Diskin (37-R) was activated from the DL and 2B Rick Dundore (35-R) was sent back to Daytona (A).

The Rochester Roosters are here to kick off the 2nd half and finish our season series with a 4 game series through the weekend. They split 4 games at home with Richmond last weekend before the All-Star break. We lost 3 of 4 games in Rochester, April 5-8, but that 1 win was our first ever. They are 3rd in scoring with 4.34 runs per game, even though they play in a very tough pitcher's park (Jacksonville is #12 with 3.64). The Roosters are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.09 per game, even though they play in a very good pitcher's park (Jacksonville is last with 5.10 and it would not matter what kind of park we played in). Their run differential is +21 and ours is -127.

July 12 - Richmond lost All-Star SP Sammy Brumley (24-L) for the rest of the season with bone chips on his elbow. He was 10-4 with a 2.79 ERA in 20 starts and was 4-0 against the Jays.
July 13 - Arturo Flores (24-L) of Indianapolis pitched a 4 hit shutout at home versus Charlotte. He walked 2 and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits and an RBI. It is his 2nd shutout of the season. He is now 6-6 with a 3.84 ERA in 19 starts. The Arrows won, 8 to 0.
July 14 - RF Ed Yeager (26-L) of Ottawa hit 2 home runs and had 4 RBI at Memphis. The Otters won, 7 to 1.
July 14 - Louisville outhit Providence, 9 to 2, but lost, 1 to 0. One of the hits by the Steamrollers was a home run by 1B Gus Milam (33-R).
July 15 - Eli Kyzar (29-R) of Syracuse, the loser in the All-Star Game, pitched a 4 hit shutout at home versus Orlando. He walked 4, hit a batter and struck out 3. It is his 3rd shutout of the season. He is now 7-6 with a 1.98 ERA in 16 starts. The Sycamores won, 1 to 0, and only had 4 hits themselves.
