Best pitcher in Mets history!

Everyone knows his name, but Mets fans just call him "TERRIFIC!"
You mean to say the best Mets pitcher who played the majority of his career as a Met.

He was a power hitting pitcher...LOL!

That ball he hit for a home run is STILL going!

I'd say Seaver had a better career than Pedro if that's who you're talking about.

Well it's midnight here, so there are 39 days to go. This guy looked like a HoFer from 1975 through 1979, and then kablooey! (or maybe cocaine?). Dave "Cobra" Parker #39

#39 is not exactly rich in history for the Blue Jays. This guy forever endeared himself to the local fanbase with this giveaway in 2006. Gustavo Chacin #39

We are in the thirties, baby! The magic number is 39.

What better way to celebrate (for Yankee fans anyway ) than by remembering one of the greatest trades in franchise history, Roberto Kelly for Paul O'Neill.

Ironically enough, this deal was seen at the time as one of those "trading one headache for another" type deals. Kelly was actually an All Star in 1992, hitting .345 at the break. Then the Yanks recalled Bernie Williams from AAA for good and moved Kelly to left. All he did after that was bitch & pout about being displaced from center, and his batting average plummeted by season's end to .272. Well, Buck Showalter was the Yankee manager at the time, and anyone who knows how Buck runs his teams knows that selfish bellyaching is a surefire way to end up wearing a different uniform. So, the Yanks traded Kelly to the Reds for O'Neill in November of '92.

It seems almost incredible in retrospect that Paul O'Neill probably had an even worse reputation than Kelly at the time. O'Neill was also said to be a selfish player, who was both a short-tempered flake, and thought to be unable to hit left-handed pitching consistently. He batted only .246 overall with 14 HR's in 1992 with the Reds. He didn't quite have the reputation of being a clubhouse cancer, but it was no secret that he had an inordinately bad relationship with then Reds manager Sweet Lou Pinella.

Thankfully for the Yanks, virtually nothing that was said about O'Neill turned out to be true. Not only could he hit left-handed pitching, but he mashed it to a fine pulp (just ask Arthur Rhodes). And yeah, he was short-tempered & a little flaky, but in a way that would motivate and ultimately personify the "No Mercy" approach of those dynasty Yankees of the '90's. It didn't matter if the Yanks were 10 runs ahead or 10 runs down, Paul O'Neill never gave away a single AB. Heck, he would even get mad at himself sometimes for getting a single when he felt he should've had a double. It was this level of intensity that caused George Steinbrenner to nickname O'Neill "The Warrior".

Thanks Roberto Kelly, wherever you are.

Blue Jays fans will forever use blue language when discussing Roberto Kelly for this.

At the risk of dating myself, Parker was arguably the best all-around player in the NL, and perhaps all of baseball, when I started following the game. He was built like a linebacker and had excellent speed for a man his size, not to mention a cannon for a throwing arm.

This guy was a brief cult hero as well. Not very popular with Yankee fans though for his role in a brawl in Yankees Stadium on September 15, 2009. But he was one funny lookin' dude (impossibly skinny) and was actually very effective in 2008 and somewhat less so in 2009 before flaming out in 2010. Jesse Carlson #39

He was spectacular early in his career. Large, large human with great speed and a fantastic arm. He could do it all. 32.3 bWAR combined from 1973 through 1979, and then just 7.6 bWAR combined over his final 12 seasons. 4.7 of those 7.6 bWAR came in 1985 when he had a brief renaissance in Cincinnati, so it was quite the precipitous dropoff.

I just wanted to correct what I wrote earlier about Roberto Kelly. While he was an All Star in 1992, he was batting .281 at the AS break, not .345.

ok...but Nolan Ryan is in the HOF as an Astro.

Seaver pitched for the Mets longer than Nolan Ryan did and he wears a Mets cap in Cooperstown..

So...IMO Tom Seaver gets the nod as the Mets' best ever pitcher, not Ryan.

Interesting however, the only championship that Ryan had ever won was in 1969 with the Mets.

He never tasted victory again the rest of his career!

How about a champion from 1969?

I'd put Seaver and Pedro ahead of Ryan, but that's just me. All are worthy HoFers obviously, but if you want me to rank them it's: 1) Seaver 2) Pedro 3) Ryan
