Down on the Farm: The International League (AAA) held their All-Star Game (not the greatest scheduling idea to have it on the same night as the major league one....). The following Indianapolis Indians were selected to play: SP Billy Rueter (28 R), RP Freddy Arana (25 R) and C Paul Stewart (26 R). Rueter and Arana have already seen action with the Beavers and Stewart is the next catcher in line to get a shot. He started in the game and went 0 for 2 but had an RBI in a losing cause. Neither of our pitchers fared very well with Rueter allowing a run in his inning and Arana giving up a couple of hits and a walk in 2/3 of and inning. |

CF Rich Babbin was activated from the Disabled List and RF Eddie Cabrales was sent back to Indianapolis. We also sent 1B Rick Deveney to Indianapolis and called up 1B Eric McCornack. The Montreal Expos and their manager, Alex Zendejas (46), are in Portland to kick off the second half with a 4-game series through the weekend. All of the Beavers had three days of rest and relaxation, but two of the Expos had to play baseball over the All-Star Break: SP Doug Stone (33 L) and his batterymate, C Dwight Smith (28 R). The first time we met them, we lost 3 of 4 in Montreal. April 5-8. We had to go 15 innings before we got the one win. They are 11th in runs scored with 3.8 per game (Portland is #16 (last) with 3.5). They lead the National League in fewest runs allowed with 3.4 per game (Portland is #12 with 4.7). Montreal Expos (49-39 .557 5.5 GB in 3rd place in the NL East) at Portland Beavers (31-55 .360 24.5 GB in 7th place in the NL West) Doug Stone, Mtl (33 L 9-1 1.65 7.0-0.5-2.0-5.6 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Angel Rodriguez, Por (23 R 3-0 3.14 5.3-1.9-4.7-6.0) On April 8, Stone beat us, 7 to 2, in Montreal. Random Fact of the Week: The Beavers do three things decently: our batters don't strike out a ton (8th in the NL) and our pitchers don't walk a lot (5th fewest in the NL) and we also field decently. Other than that, we are near or at the bottom in everything.... |

We had the day off, but I put 2B Randy Penn on the Disabled List and called up 2B Mike Cavallaro from Indianapolis (AAA). We cannot afford to be a whole week without a backup middle infielder. We also finally got word on 3B Joe Hartin: he has back tightness and should be fine in a few days. Last edited by Questdog; 01-13-2017 at 04:44 PM. |
