July 17th, 1986 Game 88 Red Sox vs. Mariners

Tonight begins the 2nd half. The Red Sox are going to have to play some incredible baseball if they want to make a run at the division crown. It doesn't start well as Mark Langston and 4 Relievers combine on a 2 hit shut out as the Mariners beat the Red Sox 3-0.

With the All Star break this week was a short week for clubs as teams only played 3 or 4 games.

The Red Sox remain 12 1/2 out after splitting a series with the Mariners. The Yankees got hot and have passed the Tigers in the AL East and now trail the Jays by only 3 1/2. In the AL West, the Angels hold a slim 1/2 game lead over the Mariners. In the NL East the Mets continue to crush the competition and hold a 12 game lead over the Expos. In the NL West, Houston holds a slim 1 game lead over the Giants.

Notes of the Week: Tony Gwynn saw his 20 game hit streak come to an end.

Red Sox had a pretty good week getting themselves back over 500 and pulling within 10 1/2 of the Blue Jays. There is still a long way to go and with the improved pitching I can't call the Sox out of it yet. Toronto holds a 4 game lead on 2nd place Detroit as both teams are currently riding losing streaks. In the AL West, Seattle has a half game lead on the Angels. The Red Sox going into Anaheim and sweeping the Angels made Mariners fans very happy. Over in the NL East, the Mets continue to dominate as they have now opened up a 15 1/2 game lead on the Expos. In the NL West, the Astros hold a 2 1/2 game lead on the Giants.

Other notes: Mike Scott had the most dominating start of the week. In his start against the Phillies he pitched 8 shutout innings allowing 3 hits and striking out 16. This win improved his record to 16-2 this year.

Players of the week
AL Ken Phelps 700 4 6

The month of July has come to an end. Due to my computer crashing I had to replay the games from July 28th-30th. It was the same result as we went 1-2 in the Series. I have now set the game to save after every game so this doesn't happen again.

Trade Deadline was yesterday and here are some of the moves from the past week. White Sox were the busiest team making 3 trades.

White Sox send Al Jones to the Brewers for Ray Searage

White Sox send Joel Skinner, Ron Kittle, Wayne Tolleson to the Yankees in exchange for Ron Hassey

White Sox send Bobby Bonilla to the Pirates for RHP Jose Deleon

Montreal sends Dan Schatzeder and Skeeter Barnes to the Phillies for Tom Foli and Larry Sorenson

Hitters of the Month
AL Kirby Puckett 355 8 22
NL Tony Gywnn 394 5 23

Pitchers of the Month
AL Tom Candiotti 5-0 1.64 (16-2 2.05 for the year)
NL Tom Browning 5-1 1.02 (10-9 2.45 for the year)

Rookies of the Month
AL Pete Incaviglia 245 8 18
NL Mark Knudson 3-0 1.32
