July 1872
1st August 1872 The White Stockings fans are starting to dream of the NL title this season as their team keep performing. In July the team posted a 6-1 record to extend their lead at the top of the NL table to 7 games. This month was built on excellent all round play. He did this from 37 at bats gaining 14 hits, 7 runs and 7 RBI's. This was not good enough for the Batter of the Month award though. This accolade went to his team mate Tom York who had an average of .343 with 12 hits, 11 runs and 8 RBI's from 35 at bats. Jim Britt is really showing why the Chicago White Stockings fans are glad the team drafted him. He posted another excellent month's ERA at 1.98. He did this from 59 innings pitched to give up 65 hits and 13 earned runs. The team gave up a very miserly total of 29 runs. These stats earned Britt his third Rookie of the Month award in the NL. 1st September 1872 The Canaries continue to play average ball as they slowly move towards the AL title. In August they managed to post a 4-3 record. This was good enough to maintain the top position in the AL table and extend their lead over the Philadelphia Athletics to 2.5 games. The batting seemed to lose some focus in August as they only scored 37 runs in the 7 games played. The best of these was Catcher Fergy Malone. Malone went to the plate 29 times and claimed 11 hits to get an average of .379. He also managed to score 7 runs and 1 RBI. Cherokee Fisher kept the pitching figures as tight as normal as he pitched all seven games. He posted an ERA of 3.60 from 55 innings pitched. This included giving up 70 hits and 22 earned runs. August 1872
1st September 1872 The fans of the Boston Red Stockings will not have quite the same exciting finish to the season as they did last year. They saw their team fall out of contention for the NL title with a poor 2-5 month in September. This leaves them 3rd in the NL table 14.5 games behind with only 11 games to play. Once again the batting was led by Levi Meyerle. He produced as superb month in which he had 14 hits from 31 at bats. This included the end of a 21 game hitting streak. This led to an average of .452. He also managed to score 6 runs and 6 RBI's. This performance earned him his third Batter of the Month award from the NL. This though hides the fact that the team only scored 28 runs in 7 games for August. The pitching continued to try its best to win the games but against poor batting didn't stand much chance. Bobby Mathews continued to start from the mound and in the seven games pitched 53.1 innings for an ERA of 3.54. He gave up 81 hits and 21 earned runs during these games. The team as a whole gave up 53 runs. Full pitching stats for August Full batting stats for August The Red Stockings played 7 games in August They started with a 3 game series against the Cincinnati Reds. They lost this 1-2. The scores were 3-6, 14-8 and 3-6 The next set saw a 0-3 sweep of them by the Chicago White Stockings. The scores were 5-12, 4-10 and 0-4 They finished with a 12-7 win against the Brooklyn Atlantics for the final game. The team will play 9 games in September. August 1872
1st September 1872 Fans of the Brooklyn Atlantics will be glad when this season is over. It is a complete contrast to the previous championship winning one. They now know they will not be retaining their title as they stay rooted to the bottom of the NL table after another poor month. August produced a 1-6 month. The batting put up its average performance during the month to score 42 runs in the 7 games. Right Fielder Bill Boyd was the best of the starters this month. He had 29 at bats which produced 11 hits, 6 runs and 2 RBI's. This was good enough for an average of .379 for the month. Catcher Dick Higham went down with a tired arm in late August and will miss 1-2 weeks The pitching is a real worry for the fans now and they are hoping that the team will look to strengthen this department in the draft come November. John McMullin pitched all 7 games from the mound and posted an ERA of 4.58. In 57 innings of work he gave up 89 hits and 29 earned runs. The team gave up a total of 60 runs for the month. Full pitching stats for August Full batting stats for August The Atlantics played 7 games in August They started by getting swept 0-3 by the Chicago White Stockings. The scores were 4-14, 5-7 and 5-7 They then went 1-2 against the Cincinnati Reds in a 3 game series. The scores were 4-5, 5-8 and 12-7 They finished with a final 7-12 loss against the Boston Red Stockings. September will see the team play 9 games and we will bring you a full report next month. |

August 1872
1st September 1872 The longer the season goes on the more convinced the White Stocking fans are that this is their season to be number one. They sit atop the NL table by 6 games with only 10 left to play. The month of August was good to them as they gained a solid 6-3 record. The batting was again solid if unspectacular scoring 66 runs in August. The best of the starters came in the form of Catcher Deacon White. White took to the plate 43 times in 9 games and managed to put bat on ball 14 of these times. This gave him an average of .326. This also garnered him 9 runs and 8 RBI's for the month. The pitching of young Jim Britt continues to astound and amaze the White Stockings fans if only for the fact that the kid is only 16 years old. He posted another amazing ERA of 1.74 for the month of August. He pitched 77.2 innings giving up 89 hits and 15 earned runs. This earned him his 4th Rookie of the Month award in the NL. The month of August was good to them as they managed to gain a winning record of 7-2. The batting managed to score a steady flow of runs all month to help win the games. The total from them was 71. August 1872
1st September 1872 The Cleveland Forest City's team seems to blow hot and cold. In August they decided it was time to blow hotter rather than colder as they went 4-3 for the month. This was good enough to leave them in 3rd place in the AL but 8 games back from the leading Canaries and only a slim outside chance of the title. The batting during this month scored a reasonable 50 runs. The best of these was the Rookie Catcher David Lenz. Lenz, an undrafted free agent signing, Posted an average of .500 from his seven games. He had 14 hits, 6 runs and 8 RBI's in 28 at bats. This was enough to earn him both the Batter of the Month and Rookie of the Month for the AL. The pitching continues to sometimes play well and sometimes play badly. In August it played well as Cy Bentley posted an ERA of 1.66 from the 7 games played. He pitched 59.2 innings and gave up 73 hits and 11 earned runs. This earned him the AL Pitcher of the Month award. The team gave up a total of 42 runs. Full pitching stats for August Full batting stats for August Cleveland played 7 games in August They started with a 3 game sweep of the St. Louis Brown Stockings. August 1872
1st September 1872 The fans of the St. Louis Brown Stockings have seen their team fall out of contention for the AL title. This was expected after the way they have performed all season. The August month was no different to the rest of the season so far in that they produced a sub par performance with a 4-5 record for the month. This leaves them rooted to the bottom of the AL table. The batting seemed to be hit and miss on the month where they scored 72 runs but most of those were in 2 or 3 games only. The best of the starting batters was Catcher Cap Anson. He managed to post an average of .385 from 39 at bats. This included 15 hits, 7 runs and 6 RBI's. The pitching of George Zettlein continues to be solid as he put up an ERA of 3.17 for the month. 1st October 1872 The Fans of the Baltimore Canaries are on tenterhooks knowing they are almost their. They lead the AL by 2.5 games over the Philadelphia Athletics. The team only needs to win one of its last 2 games and they have won a second consecutive AL Pennant. Even if they lose both games they are still in a play off for the title as the Philadelphia Athletics have 3 games left. In September the team went 6-3. The batting was as solid as normal in September as they scored 54 runs. The best was George Wright who had 19 hits in 41 at bats. This led to him having a .463 average in September. He also picked up 10 runs and 4 RBI's including 1 home run. This performance won him the AL Batter of the Month award, his second of his career. Cherokee Fisher continued to keep the scores low on the pitching side as he posted an ERA of 1.62 in September. He pitched 78 innings and gave up 91 hits and 41 earned runs. September 1872
1st October 1872 The Boston Red Stocking fans are hoping that the season is quick in finishing after the month their team has just had. The team played 9 games in September and managed to lose every single one of them. This leaves them in third place in the NL. The only reason they are not bottom is how badly the Brooklyn Atlantics have been playing. This poor performance has cost the Red Stockings manager, Harry Wright, his job. The new man in charge of the team on the field is manager Kyle Fisher. The batting scored a solid 53 runs in September. This was led by star Third Baseman Levi Meyerle who continued his good season. He had 15 hits from 40 at bats. This gave him an average in the month of .375. His figures included 8 runs and 8 RBI's. The pitching and fielding were a major let down during the month as the Season caught up with the team. Bobby Mathews posted an ERA of 3.34 for the month. This was from 56.2 innings where he gave up 88 hits and 21 earned runs. The team gave up 106 runs in total. September 1872
1st October 1872 The Brooklyn Atlantics had another below average month to keep them rooted to the bottom of the NL. They managed a 4-5 record in the month of September. This wasn't helped by the fact that pitcher John McMullin went down with another 4 week injury in mid September This led to changes in the front office. GM Kenny Butler found out that there is no sympathy or sentimentality in Baseball. Last season he helped the Atlantics to the championship win but this year they are rooted to the bottom of the table. This has led to him being fired by Mr Diment the owner. The new GM was announced as the ex St. Louis Brown Stockings GM Gabriel Morgan. The fans are hoping he will bring more success to Brooklyn than he did to St. Louis and hope he will fill the issue position of pitcher in the next draft. The team scored 93 runs in September. This though is skewed by 2 big scoring games. The best of the batting was Dick Higham who played 8 games after his return from injury. He had 40 at bats and gained 20 hits. This gave him an average of .500 along with 11 runs and 10 RBI's. This performance was enough to earn him the NL Batter of the Month award. The pitching was again hit by injuries. George Bechtel had to stand in again. In 5 games he posted an ERA of 3.60. In the 4 games the John McMullin played he posted an ERA of 4.11. Between them they pitched 65.2 innings and gave up 99 hits and 28 earned runs. The team gave up 111 runs. Full pitching stats for September Full batting stats for September The team played 9 games in September They started with 2 wins against the Boston Red Stockings 9-8 and 32-16. September 1872
1st October 1872 The fans of the Chicago White Stockings have gladly changed any plans they had in mid to late October.
