Mantle is, what, 37 now? I think he can reach it, if just barely. He hit over 10 home runs combined these past two years, so I think he can put in that extra strength for another two.

He is, although as much as I hope he does, but it doesn't look too good. His power potential is pretty low and he's pretty fragile. We'll see, but next year isn't a good sign.

1969 - Robson slams 51
Tom Robson joins Bob Lennon as the only players who have hit more than 50 home runs in a season. Robson only hit one home run in real life. Hank Aaron retired with 193 career home runs, and perhaps the biggest disappointment yet. Willie McCovey debuted on the leaderboards this season, while Mickey Mantle appears stuck at 388. 1970 - Hague/Garrett hit 52
1970 proved to be a strange year as Joe Hague and Adrian Garrett each hit 52 home runs to lead the league, with Tom Robson one behind with 51.

1971 - Mantle retires
Mickey Mantle retired with 388 career home runs, 12 shy of the magic number of 400. He's now the 12th player in a row that failed to get 400, and this whole dynasty is somehow cursed. Another year, another player on top of the leaderboards. This year it was Bill McNulty who didn't hit any home runs in his career, and this years leaders are once again filled with players that never did much in their careers (mostly). Hank Thompson retired with 334 career home runs and hit 129 home runs in real life. Frank Robinson debuted on the career leaders, with Joe Bauman and his 329 homers off. 7/30/1972-Frank Howard hits 400th
The Reds played a doubleheader today against the Giants, and in the second game of the doubleheader Frank Howard hit career home run number 400.
Frank Howard hit 382 home runs in real life, so I've got no complaints about this one. |

1972 - Robson leads the league
Tom Robson led the league with 42 home runs this season. This season's leaders were definitely unusual, at least compared to real life. 1973 - Frank Robinson retires
Frank Robinson retired from baseball with 334 career home runs, falling short of his 586 real life home runs, becoming the 13th straight failure. At this point I almost expect the real life members off the 400 club to fail given the history. They get close, and come up short. Looks like Killebrew will be the next to come up short, with Willie McCovey slowing down considerably. Ike Hampton led the league this year with 53 home runs. Hampton hit 4 home runs in real life in his career. Adrian Garrett appeared on the career home run leaderboards this season. The 400 Club Active Members of the 400 Club Harmon Killebrew (573) 370 Willie McCovey (521) 351 Willie Stargell (475) 324 Carl Yastrzemski (452) 317 Billy Williams (426) 234 Darrell Evans (414) 129 Reggie Jackson (563) 124 Mike Schmidt (548) 110 Dave Winfield (465) 28 Andre Dawson (438) 5 Dave Kingman (442) 0 Eddie Murray (504) 0 Players to Debut (24) - next debut: 1978 - Cal Ripken Jr (431) Players who reached 400 club in replay, but not real life (11) - Mule Suttles (N/A) 559, Leroy Jones (0) 450, Willard Brown (1) 484, Charlie Gilbert (5) 433, Bob Lennon (1) 746, Carl Sawatski (58) 534, Tookie Gilbert (7) 678, Ted Kluszewski (279) 437, Ken Guettler (0) 510, Tony Oliva (220) 450, Frank Howard (382) 403 Players who reached 400 club in real life, but not replay (13) - Babe Ruth (714) 351, Lou Gehrig (493) 290, Jimmie Foxx (534) 266, Ted Williams (521) 169, Mel Ott (511) 360, Stan Musial (475) 240, Duke Snider (407) 259, Ernie Banks (512) 142, Eddie Mathews (512) 267, Willie Mays (660) 249, Hank Aaron (755) 193, Mickey Mantle (536) 388, Frank Robinson (586) 334 1973 Home Run Leaders 1. 1974 - Two more bite the dust
We are now up to 15 straight players who failed to live up to expectations, as Billy Williams retired with 234 career home runs, and Harmon Killebrew retired with 370. I thought Killebrew really had a chance at some point.
Tony Oliva also retired with 451 career home runs after hitting 220 in real life. Jim Pagliaroni retired with 356, and in real life hit 90. Joe Hague debuted on the career leaders, with Frank Robinson and Hank Thompson falling off with 334 apiece. This season Ike Hampton led the way with 43 home runs. What do you think the chances are that Carl Yastrzemski finally breaks the curse? He's still racking up 20-homer seasons. Do you think he'll reach 500? He can't be older than 35.

He just turned 37 at the end of the season, and I want to say he should do it only needing 29. But I've seen a lot of crazy things happen already. He's suffered through quite a few injuries already and he's already on the decline. I'd say the odds were 80-20 he gets to 400, but I think 500 is out of reach for him.

1977 - McNulty Slams 72
Bill McNulty broke the single season home run record when he hit 72 home runs this season. With 72 home runs he increased his career total to 382 home runs and made his debut on the career leaderboards. With the addition of McNulty, Earl Averill and his 359 career home runs fell off. Tom Tresh retired from baseball with 452 home runs. Tresh hit 153 home runs in real life. As for Yaz, well he really had a bad year this year, and I'm now questioning my 400 club optimism. Hopefully he rebounds from his injury next year and restores some of my faith.
