BASEBALL MONTHLY v. 11.9 November 1881 Baseball Opening Its Doors To Expansion Even though there remain obvious problems in the profesional game of baseball including the division and diffrences between the two prominent leagues, the popularity of the game has never been better. Few could have imagined when the uncertain players league began 11 years ago that the game would be attracting thousands of fans for its games and record followings through print and word of mouth.
With the boom inpopularity there is of course big money to be made and some flegding economic centers are hoping baseball could help make a diffrence. Team owners of the 8 existing teams met this month in New York to discuss options at expanding the league and considering numerous requests from cities around the country and that are bidding for the profesional game. The owners of course are considering the league rescources and how many teams would be feesable to add, also what cities and bids have the most likely plans and markets to succeed. In the meantime new ball parks have been springing up accross the nations, some just for the local games but others with the direct intention of getting a profesional team to call it home. The biggest of these additions obviously being the Polo Grounds in New York City. New York is the most prominat market that is sure to be adding a team or even two for the new league structure, the only current team in the area is the Brooklyn Atlantics who have never won a pennant. Other cities in consideration are Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Detroit, and quite possibly another team for Chicago and Boston. Details of the changes will be announced in December when the league finalizes a vote on who and how many teams will be joining the restructured league. Rumors are saying that as many as 6-8 additional teams will be added. "Its time for the game of baseball to make a monumental and historic move across out landscape." wrote the New York Times last week, "the game can no longer be ignored as a national hoppy but rather considered an national pasttime." Such stars as Ross Barnes, Cap Anson, and Lee Richmond all have gained national fame as heroes and now have enough fame to be full time ball players, even in the offseason. Many cities hold their breath in hopes of hearing their bids called and the invitation to play profesional ball. Regardless the game and league as we know it will be changing drastically next season, with an expansion draft very likely. Owners are due to meet again in a few days. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY V. 11.10 December 1881 Profesional Baseball Doubles Itself! In an unprecedented move, and by some opinions a risky move, the most popular sport in America is advancing itself, in fact double in size. After lenghty meetings for the past weeks, the league will restructure itself to 8 teams per division with a total of 16. "It is a historic day in the game of baseball," said the league president, "a great day for fans throughout the country and a great day for the game itself." The league will expand as follows: AMERICAN ASSOCIATION
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Four new cities are entering profesional play (Pittsburgh, Detroit, Washington, and Louisville) and four cities are adding another pro team to an existing market (Chicago, New York, Phildelphia, and Boston).
There is incredible excitement in the new cities as the pro game advances itself. The next step for the league will be an expansion draft to fill these new teams with some pro talent to make the play on the field hopefully more competitive. It was also announced that each existing team will be allowed to protect 12 players on their roster. The Chicago White protected the following 12 players: 3B Cap Anson 2B Fred Dunlap SP Al Spalding OF Pete Hotaling P Hugh Campbell P John Cassidy 1B John Reily 3B Ned Williamson SP George Derby C Ed Whiting 3B Mike Muldoon RF Chief Roseman The Whites did not protect two players that many thought that they would, short stop George Wright and outfielder Mike Dorgan. BASEBALL MONTHLY Special Edition Season Preview National League With expansion and player movement so frequent this offseason due to league expnsion, it is a good time to quickly cover the teams and their outlook going into the 1882 season.
We start with the National League: Chicago White Stockings The team definately got thinner as they go into the new season hoping for theit third straight pennant. Gone are George Wright and Mike Dorgan. Ezra Sutton comes back to the team that drafted him to play short and Frank Selman is now a dependable arm out of the pen. The scouts are dubbing Mike Muldoon as the newest star of the team at third base, Cap Anson will make the transition to first. Ned Williamson gets his shot in the outfield. Cincinnati Red Stockings Fritz Pfeffer the number one pick from last season will be looking to make a spalsh this season for the Reds. Ciny still also has George Gore in centerfield and Larry Corcoran on the mound. The team still isnt the deepest and most talented, but is heading in the right direction. Tom Barlow is also one of the better catchers in the league. Boston Red Caps An organization that is always expected to win, th Red Caps made some major changes this season. Gone are long time stars Deacon White and Cy Bentley, who contributed so much to the team. The pressure falls on youn pitching prospect Bill Sweeney who much is expected from. Ross Barnes still is the best of the best with the bat, and Jack Glasscock is coming off of a breakout year where he won the batting title. The Red Caps will go as far as their young arms take them. Brooklyn Atlantics New ownership in Brooklyn as the popular team looks to finally start winnng. Pitcher Tim Keefe lost 20 games last year but still has dynamic stuff with little support from his defense. Dan Brouthers and King Kelly are two of the best hitters in the game, Kelly staying with the team was a big break for the club. Canadian Arthur Irwin is a star in the making at short stop for the team. New York Gothams There is great excitement as finally a team comes to the big city, so come big expectations. The team took a chance on The Only Nolan on the mound, who will have to deal well with the pressures of New York life. John ORourke and Mike Dorgan look to carry a weak offense that may have issues scoring runs in the Polo Grounds. Bill Geiss is another strong arm on the team as his role is yet to be revealed completely. Philadelphia Quakers Trickey Nichols who has been a star in the league for sometime helps start another franchise in Philly. Nichols has a 2.37 career ERA and will be part of a deep staff the includes Joe Edwards and Laurie Ries. A balanced but older lineup awauts with Levi Meyerle still among the most gifted hitters in the game and Steve King who is closing in on 40 and just wont give up the game. Charley Radbourn could be one of the most underated players in the game. The Quakers may be very competitive. Pittsburgh Alleghenys Baseball comes to the working city of Pittsburgh. Pitching is a weakness of the team as Dory Dean will be expected to be an ace for the team, Dean has only won 17 games in 6 years. Bert Dorr however is set to being groomed to be the pitching star of the future, but is the 20 year old ready? The offense looks good in the hands of Abner Dalrymple who has drove in 170 runs in his career. Center fielder Paul Hines finally tries to settle down with a team, his 4th in his 10 year career. St, Louis Brown Stockings This is not the team that won it all last season despite thier name. In a feel good story Candy Cummings comes back to St. Louis where he pitche for 7 years to relight his flame, but many wonder if he has anything left at the top of the rotation. George Wright gets another chance to prove himself as the leader in RBI last season brings a confidence to the plate. Deacon White has made a new home and brings a career .339 average and 3 championships with him. Orator Shaffer is another player that is expected to get even better as he will man 3rd base for the team. The hitting will be there for this team, but the pitching is among the weakest in the game. BASEBALL MONTHLY SPECIAL EDITION American Association Season Preview BALTIMORE ORIOLES Jumbo McGinnis may be the best arm currently in the game, he anchors a Boston Americans Boston has brought in another team due to the popularity of the Red Caps. The Americans didn’t do much to get a strong set of arms and may be dependent on Ed Stratton, the old A’s pitcher who was never a star. Davy Force and Lou Say make a good right side of the infield and Jim Egan is the best young talent in the outfield. With the lack of a real star, most expect this Chicago White Sox A great outfield for the new Chicago team that many feel shouldn’t be called the White Sox. Mart King and Buttercup Dickerson are a great combination and Lip Pike has always been a star. Young Eddie Hogan is the hope of the pitching staff and he just might be able to live up to it. Chick Filmer the new shortstop is said to be unhappy he wasn’t picked by Cleveland Blues Grasshopper Jim Whitney had a fine season with a 1.64 ERA last season and appears to be one of the most deceptive pitchers in the game. Stump Wiedman can learn from Whitney and has a promising future as a pitcher himself. Cliff Carroll has fans excited as he is the first player that can hit both from the right and the left side, his talent is immense. Cal Mcvey brings a veteran player to the team, and Bill Taylor is another talent worth watching behind the plate. This Cleveland team is shaping up to be quite a good one. Detroit Wolverines The state of Michigan is hopping becuase of their new team. They drafted George Bradley to take the mound and lead the team. Bradley is a two time pitcher of the year and is the perfect man to start a franchise with. The lineup is not overpowering but does have potential. Young talent like Sandy Nava at ctacher and Hardy Richardson at third. Dickie Flowers also looks to revive his career after two very long years in Philadelphia. Louisville Eclipse The defending chamions now play out of Louisville. Word is they were given a ton of money to move and Lousville has their prize. Mickey Welch was a star after a great World Series against Chicago, his strike out rate is electrifying. The lineup is stacked from top to bottom, Dick Higman, Dasher Troy, and Hugh Nicol are all great contributors. The new Eclipse are very well coached and proved last season that when they are hot, they cant be touched. Philadelphia Athletics This once proud team is looking for its glory days again. The collapse last season to lose the pennant has many worried. Lee Richmond is still the best pitcher in the game on the mound, his 27 wins and 1.77 ERA are true proof of his greatness. Mike Moynahan won the MVP award at the plate and at 25 is just getting started. Jack Manning batted .327 last year at first base and Steve Brady has also proven he is a strong big league hitter. Expectations for the A's to win are even higher as the new National League Quakers have come to town. Washington Nationals A new team in the capatal and they are looking for make a splash early. Washington is banking that Cy Bentely, one of the best pitchers ever to throw, still as something left at the age of 31, Bentley of course has 277 wins and 7 pitcher of the year awards. Frank Mountain is coming off a major injury but is said to be back and willing to contribute in the bullpen and Tommy Bond is one of the strongest arms in the league. The team hitting isnt the greatest either, with Harry Stovey and Charlie Comiskey expected to battle it out for the first base job. Veteran Joe Quest mans 2nd base but there is no doubt this team will struggle scoring runs but the pitching doesnt look all that bad at all. Now a new era is set to begin in pro baseball with more fans then ever watching as season with more pithes, runs, and games then ever. Last edited by Nick Soulis; 05-01-2010 at 04:45 PM. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY V. 12.5 April 1882 New League Starts With Enthusiasm Fans couldnt get enough baseball and asked for more; more is exactly what they recived as the new look pro game took its start in ball parks across the country. More games and more full schedules for the league as 16 teams position themselves from the opening gate, the first month of this year was not short of its early suprizes. The new teams dominated in the attendance game as fans flocked to the new teams in curiosity to see what baseball product they presented. In fact the top five highest attendance averages for the month of April were held by expansion teams, mostly from the big cities.
The biggest start up of the first month was that of the Chicago White Sox. The Sox had thousands of fans come out to South Side Park where ticket prices were close to 8 cents less then their rivals by the lake, the Chicago White Stockings. The Sox offered beer sales and a closer proximity to the working class where the cross town rivals remained a team for what seems like an exclusive group. On the field the Sox impressed even more, they opened with a 13-8 overall reord but were an impressive 8-1 in front of their capacity crowds at home. Pidgey Morgan for the Sox has allowed only 3 earned runs in 48 innings helping the Sox stay in the early race. The Baltimore Orioles had a better start then anyone going 17-4 in the month and looking like a team with a new lease on life. Jumbo McGinnis is of course dominating on the mound but its the bat of 20 year old Jackie Hayes that has many talking. Hayes is batting .425 for the young season and has already driven in 16 runs. ![]() In sharp contrast, the Louisville Eclipse, who were technically the team that won it all last season have made a rough transition to their new city and home, The former Brown Stocking are 6-15 overall and in last place in the AA. Rumors are spreading that many on the team are not happy with the move, and in fact miss St, Louis badly although no one would go on record as having said so. As for the White Stockings they started the month 12-9 and are two games behind the Boston Red Caps. The team does have some major concerns especailly with their defense, the team commited more then 10 errors in a game twice this month! alone! The lack of depth in the outfield and at catcher has some players playing out of position, even Cap Anson had to take a game behind the plate for the first time after the regular catcher Ed Whiting strained a muscle. The team will look to deal with these issues in the upcoming June draft. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY V 12.6 May 1882 Whites Tied For First Despite Injuries Despite all the recent changes to the game, halfway through the 1882 season there are two very familair foes fighting it out in the National League. The Boston Red Caps and Chicago White Stockings, who have combined for 8 pennants, were tied for first place in a league race that is getting tighter by the day. Chicago was hit hard with injuries in the month of May and did its best to navigate through it. Star Fred Dunlap badly twisted his ankle on May 7th and isnt due back in the lineup until mid June. Dunlap was joined on the disabled list later in the month when Mike Muldoon strained an oblique muscle and a will also be out for another three weeks. Dunlap and Muldoon were the teams best hitters for the new season and their loss puts a heavier burden on the pitching staff. The staff has responded well and is holding a 1.83 ERA which believe it or not is only good enough for third in this league. With the lack of support at times and also a run of bad defense this year by the team, the Chicago pitcher have had to battle through it all. George Derby is doing it all with a 10-6 record and a 1.34 ERA, Derby has mastered his craft. Al Spalding will always be the ace of this team, he is 8-7 with a 2.01 ERA and continues to eat up innings. Terry Larkin as always has fit in where he could, starting in 13 games effectively. Ned Williamson has been quite the utility man and is having a good year at the plate. Williamson who is a shy kid, is batting .294 with 28 RBI, well above his .242 career average. Ned Williamson"Im just happy at the chance to play" says Ned who is making the most of his time. The division with Boston and Chicago on top also has Brooklyn only one game back and Cincinnati only two back. The senior teams in the National League seem to have left the new expansion teams in the dust. On another side note, in order to compete with the new expansion Chicago White Sox, the White Stockings have lowered ticket prices by 5 whole cents to gain more of a gate audience.

BASEBALL MONTHLY V 12.7 June 1882 Brooklyn and Chicago Take It Down the Stretch With a revamped and experimental schedule that has the season ending at the end of July, fans and teams alike will have to prepare for the pennant race a little earlier this year. The defending champion Chicago White Stockings are deadlocked with the Brooklyn Atlantics, who finally feel they have the team to win their first pennant. Chicago got their igniters back with Fred Dunlap and Mike Muldoon to keep pace with a 15-10 month. Unfortunately Chicago and Brooklyn do not face each other for the rest of the season, making scoreboard watching a big part of the race, both teams have 14 games remaining on the season that will end at the end of July. Brooklyn has the power of King Kelly who is leading baseball with 60 RBI. King along with Dan Brouthers provide maybe the best duo the league has seen since the White/Barnes combo for years in Boston. As for Boston and Cincinnati, they are not completely out of it as each team is five games back. In other notes Cap Anson of the Whites has proven through the years how important to the team he is on and off the field. The player/manager was only the second player in history to get 1000 hits when he did this against the New York Gothams. For the 5th time in his career Anson was named player of the month and also scored his 500th run. ![]() "It seems like Pops turns it on when he needs to every season" said Al Spalding of his teamate, "when the pennant is on the line Cap always seems to come through." Anson has even been called to catch this season as he has played three diffrent positions. In regards to the draft that took place this month, the Chicago Whites added help to a very thin outfield. Young Billy Sunday from Iowa was the first pick for Chicago, the 19 year old kid is already getting playing time in right field and was the youngest player to start a game in team history. Chicago then drafted second baseman Billy Reid followed by another outfielder in Jim Lille. -----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY V. 12.8 July 1882 Brooklyn Beats Chicago To The Finish For what seems to be too often in their history the Chicago White Stocking came up just short of the pennant losing out by one game on the last day of the season. Joy filled the streets in Brooklyn as the Atlantics brought their first ever season of success with a dramatic finish to a determined champioship run.
Both teams stayed neck and neck for the last two months of the season. The Atlantics won five in a row at the start of the month and held a one game lead with six left to play. A loss however at home to Philadelphia allowed the Whites to tie for the lead again and both teams were tied going into the final series of the year. Chicago lost a wild game 11-10 to the Quakers and fell behind by one game but the opposite happened on the next day as Chicago won and Brooklyn lost. So o the final day of the season the teams were tied again and all bets were on a one game playoff. Brooklyn did their part by beating the Boston Red Caps 5-1 and waited for the result from Chicago. The Quakers bombed the White Stockings and Terry Larkin scoring 4 in the first inning and another 5 in the sixth, leaving the home team with a stunning defeat. Chicago allowed 23 hits and were obviously full of nerves for this crucial game. So the pennant was loss and the White Stockings had no one to blame but themselves. In the American Association the Baltimore Orioles feel just as bad as Chicago. The Orioles let the pennant slip through their fingers in another tight race, Cleveland went 11-3 in the final month and the Orioles were a dismal 6-8. The Cleveland Blues almost literally stole the pennant and remedied many years of being close by finally winning. "its 1877 all over again" said a disapointed Chicago fan after the loss, refrencing of course the collapse of the White Stockings during that year. So a couple of first time participants take part in the World Series that should bring a vibe of newness and energy. Stars like Dan Brouthers and Tim Keefe take on Stump Wiedman and Billy Taylor. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Final Standings
---------------------------------------------------------------------- League Tidbits Deacon WhiteThe Deacon wins batting title A new team didnt bother Deacon White in 1882. White became the oldest player to win a batting title at 34 years old and fit in well with the St. Louis Browns. Deacon had 122 hits and batted .349 for the season. The closest hitter was 18 points below his average. Billy TaylorBillt Taylor Slams Most Homers Billy Taylor set a new record for power and home runs. Taylor hit 9 home runs and passed the previous record that Lip Pike held with 8 home runs. Taylor however has other things to think about now as he is playing with his Cleveland Blues in this years World Series. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY V. 12.9 August 1882 Its Brooklyn! Champions Finally a sigh could be heard across the Brookyn taverns and side streets as their beloved Atlantics brought home their first world championship, defeating the Cleveland Blues 4 games to 2.
It was a well deserved win for the Atlantics who fought tooth and nail with the Chicago White Stockings for the pennant and stayed poised to beat the Blues. A recap of the World Series shows their superiority: Game 1
WP: Tim Keefe LP: Stump Wiedman Tim Keefe pitches an absolute masterpiece going 9 innings and allowing only 4 hits to outduel Stump Wiedman who was almost as good. The only run of the game was set up by a Fred Lewis triple in the seventh inning. A very well played opening game. Game 2
WP: Dory Dean LP: Jim Whitney A 20 hit explosion carried the Atlantics in game two which was a in great contrast to the opener. Brooklyn celebrated an easy 16-3 win and were all over Jim Whitney and the stunned Blues. Eight doubles and a 4-4 day by Fred Lewis who also scored a series record 4 runs. Game 3
WP: Tim Keefe LP: Jim Whitney A Sam Wise triple and another great pitched game by Tim Keefe allow the Atlantics to steal a game in the first ever post season game in Cleveland. Center fielder Charlie Bennett was also 3 for 4 on the day as Jim Whitney lost again and Cleveland were now facing elomination. Game 4
WP: Spud Wiedman LP: Dory Dean S: Foghorn Bradley Brooklyn goes up 6-0 in this game and appears a sure shot for the sweep and title. The Blues however wont quit an down 8-5 in the bottom of the eight they put 4 runs on the board and allow Foghorn Bradley to close out the ninth and prolong the series. Joe Farrell had a two run triple in the inning to put the Atlantics to bed. Game 5
WP: Jim Britt LP: Frank Pearce Cleveland again rallies late with two runs in the secventh inning to break open the game and make this series very interesting. Jerry Denny was the man with the bat who went 2-4 with 3 RBI. Jim Britt was excellent on the mound and did not allow an earned run. Game 6
WP: Tim Keefe LP: Jim Whitney Tim Keefe becomes a hero as he wns his 3rd game of the series and Brooklyn closes out the series in perfect fashion on their home field at Washington Park. King Kelly and Fred Lewis both drive in 4 runs as Jim Whitney will be seeing the Atlantics in his sleep all winter long, losing his third game of the series. A fine season comes to a close, with a new worthy champion from the big city. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY V. 13.3 March 1883 Cal Mcvey Joins Whites For Run At Pennant ![]() After contemplating a difficult offseason the Chicago White Stockings decided against overhauling their team in hopes to improve. Instead the team retooled once again hoping to get the NL pennant back. The loss to Brooklyn last season was a bitter pill to swallow, but many are reminded that the team was sitting in first place for much of the season. Rumors were circulating all season that the team was considering trading star pitcher Al Spalding, but in the end he returns back to the club. The team did let go bullpen contributer Hugh Campbell who had played his entire career in Chicago. Campbell gets a nice pay increase to play fof the Cleveland. The biggest addition to the team was to help fill the weakness behind the plate. The team negotiated hard and was able to tie up the services of Cal McVey, who played last season in New York. McVey is a career .310 hitter and was the 1873 MVP. McVey is 33 years old and maybe a bit past his prime, but still should be a good clubhouse presence and a player who wants to win and is a fierce competitor. Fred Dunlap addressed the team needs, "We already know we are a good team." said Sure Shot, "its that extra someting to put us over the top that a veteran like Cal brings." Chicago is still rated #1 in the league power rankings and is the odds on favorite to win it all.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Good Times In Brooklyn The Brooklyn Atlantics are coming off of a storied season after winning their first world championship. Fans are starting to get excited about a new year and the prospects of repeating as pennant winners. In the meantime Brooklyn is a great place to be as the city is funded with one of the biggest projects in Amercian infrastructure history. The city is almost complete in building the great Brooklyn Bridge that will be a vital artery to the metropolitan area. The Bridge is set to make its historic completion this spring. In the meantime the Atlantics made another big free agent splash by signing quality outfielder Mike Dorgan from New York. New ownership seems determined to make a diffrence and build a permanant winner for the loyal fanbase. -------------------------------------------------------------------- League Tidbits

BASEBALL MONTHLY V. 13.4 April 1883 Poor Start Prompts Chicago Trade A losing record is something that has become unaccpetable over time for the Chicago White Stockings, but as the busy month of April came to a close the Whites were seven games back at 11-13. A seven game losing streak including getting swept by the defending champion Atlantics and the upstart current leader Cincinnati Reds, put the team in a bit of a gloom. The team made a deal for some more pitching as their hitting is first in the league (.300) and is led by Cap Anson who is off to the best start of his career, leading the league with a .417 average. The Whites dealt up and coming star Long John Reily to the Baltimore Orioles for strong relief pitcher Art Hagan. Hagan is hoped to fill the void left after the departure of Hugh Cambell this offseason. Reily will be missed in Chicago thanks to his speed and abilty to score runs. However in this lineup the young man was unhappy with his playing time and is off for a fresh start. A fresh start is exactly what Reily needed as the promptly won the player of the week award in the Amercian Association upon leaving Chicago, batting .421. Long John traded this month"I liked Chicago" said Reily, "but every player wants a chance to play, and this is what the Orioles have given me." Chicago now focuses on getting back in the race. Ace George Derby is off to a slow start, as his ERA is at a high 2.42 and he is only 2-6 in the month. derby didnt seem worried, "Its still early and we have many games to get back in the race, seven games back in April is not to much for these boys." In the shining performance of the month, Ezra Sutton the Whites short stop set a new major league record by driving in 7 RBI in only the second game of the season. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY V 13.5 May 1883 Off Field Dispute Converges On League As professional baseball advances itself and continues to gain popularity around the country, the humanity of the game still has significant implications. In recent years the position of catcher has seen enhancements especially to the equipment used to prevent injury. Recently Al Spalding of the Chicago White Stockings who also owns a nationwide sporting good company with his name, has signed a contract with the National League that they would use the new "catchers mask" for all their teams and catchers. The contract is said to be fairly lucrative for Spalding ans many are voicing concern that such a deal is a conflict of interest between one of the players and the league itself. Al SpaldingThe story gets even more difficult as some are saying the idea and patent of the "mask" didnt come from Spalding. In fact former teamate of Spalding George Wright claims that he came up with the concept two years ago and that Spalding stole the idea when the players played together in 1881. Wright who now plays with the St. Louis Browns made it no secret that he and many of the White Stockings, especially Cap Anson and Spalding, didnt get along at all. George WrightWright is threatiening to sue the league and Spalding for their new agreement and sources are saying that lawyers have been contacted. Spalding had downright mean words when asked about his former teamate, "he is a vluture" said the pitcher with the most wins in baseball history, "he wants to make money out of nothing and inpeded good old American business." Details are to definately follow as in the midst of this a good baseball season is about halfway through. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY V 13.6 June 1883 Chicago Makes Roster Moves To Stay in Race Chicago may have waited too late to decide to start playing well and in turn get back into the pennant race. The White Stockings had a strong month and a 20-8 record. But as the calander turned to July the team was still six games behind the division leading Beaneaters, even though their record is 12 games over .500. To get there the Whites made some moves at the start of the month that suprized some, but did put a spark into the team. Chicago traded productive third baseman Mike Muldoon to Brooklyn in exchange for the enigmatic catcher King Kelly. Kelly brought an instant spark to the team and filled in well where Cal Mcvey couldnt at the position for the first half of the season. Stump WiedmanChicago also added a dependable arm in a move that many are still wondering how the front office pulled it off. The Whites sent young prospect Ed Whiting for Cleveland 22 year old pitcher Stump Wiedman. Wiedman of course won the 1882 outstanding pitcher award last season and was a big part in helping the Blues win the pennant. Cleveland was rumored to want to dump the players big salary, and retool since they are fading from the American Association pennant race.
----------------------------------------------------------------------- BOTH STARS NOTCH 300 In the race to be the first man to win 300 career games both Cy Bentley and Al Spalding couldnt have made it any closer. The two legends of the mound achieved the milestone one day apart. Bentely did get there first on June 5th with a 4-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. Little could the White Sox man enjoy sole possesion on top because by the very next day Spalding won his 300th in a 14-11 win over the Atlantics. Splading of course is a good 8 years younger then Bentley making his achievement even more imppresive. Still both hurlers are once again having good seasons and the end is not in site for either of these men. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- League Tidbits

BASEBALL MONTHLY 13.7 July 1883 Pennants Decided; Team Owner Passes A furious finish to the division pennant races culminated this month in the world of baseball but this season had a diffrent feel then the others as it came down the stretch.
The best baseball has to offer is a pennant race and the Baltimore Orioles held off the Philadelphia Athletics to win their third American Association pennant. The Orioles took control with about 6 games to go after winning 2 out of three at home against the A's and extending their lead to 3 full games. Baltimore did lose their last two games of the season to make the final margin in the division a single game, but the clincher had already been celebrated when they defeated Louisville 5-1 on July 20th. But the finish wasnt so rosy for the Orioles. Early in the month news filtered down before their game at Cleveland that the team owner, who had been battling an illness, had passed away in his sleep. The team took the news hard as many players where close with ownership and were praying for a diffrent outcome. "We are all like a family here" said Jumbo McGinnis, "a loss like this is exactly like losing someone in your immediate family." Attending memorial services and funerals the team battled on and actually began to play better in their run for the pennant, like they were playing with a purpose. "We want to win it for him" said Jackie Hayes, "It what he would have wanted and expected us to do." The ownders young son has taken over the club and will keep the Oriole organization in the family. Now a city looks to celebrate as a team mourns but wins in their own special way. The World Series beckons. National League to the Wire The National League race came down to the final day of the season once again and again the Chicago White Stockings were involved, but came just a little bit short. The Whites put on an incredible run since June 1st going 36-12 in the process and gaining a possesion of first place going into the final weekend. The Whites put together winning streaks of 10 and 8 games, with Spud Weidman and Cap Anson the major stars of the streak. The Cincinnati Reds wernt ecxactly playing poor baseball either. As the Whites made their run, the Reds stayed steady in their own skin. The Reds went 14-6 in the last month and never fell behind in the division, but remained tied for the top on a number of diffrent occasions with Chicago ad Boston limped out of the race thanks in part to some key injuries. The teams were tied going into the final weekend as the Reds traveled to New York and the Whites hosted defending champion Brooklyn. George Derby acomplished something no other player in Chicago history has ever done in the opener of the series, hitting 2 home runs in the same game and allowing the Whites to beat the Atlantics 4-3; the Reds also won. ![]() Al Spalding coulnt keep it going as he lost on Saturday to the Atlantics 5-3, and as the Reds won again, Cincinnati was in the drivers seat. Chicago won their final game on Sunday by a 3-2 margin and waited for resuts as the Reds and Gothams went into extra innings. Down by a run in the 12th inning the Reds put together a rally. When catcher Tom Kearns threw the ball away on a steal attempt to allow the tying run the score the end seemed inevitable. A few batters later a wild pitch by Charles Witherow was the winner as Bill Blyd crossed the plate in jubilation. The Reds were National League champions for the second time. Chicago were distraught but were proud of the run they made at the end of the season. "This team gave it everything they had." said Cap Anson. Just like last season, Chicago lost the pennant on the last day of the season. As the World Series gets ready to begin between the Orioles and the Reds, this marks the first time in league history that both league pennants were decided by a single game margin. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------- Batting Title to Cap Anson 167/456 .366Cap Anson of Chicago lead the league in hitting almost since the opening week of play. The Chicago first baseman had an outstanding season batting .366 and driving in 76 runs. Anson also stole 32 bases on the year showing what an all around talent he is. Shaw Wins Pitching Triple 388 Strike outs in 418 innings!Young 24 year old pitcher Dupee Shaw has reached super star status. Dupee playing for the Boston Americans pulled off a rare feat this season winning the triple crown of pitching excellence. Dupee led the league with 32 wins, had a league best ERA of 1.23, and most of allstruck out an incredible 388 batters! This was over 50 more then the next man and Shaw actually struck out more men the hits allowed. Last edited by Nick Soulis; 05-19-2010 at 11:15 PM. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY V 13.9 September 1883 13th World Series Reds Win First World Title The Cincinnati Reds for the first time in their history are the lone champions of professional baseball. The Reds had all the best against the Baltimore Orioles, who were playing with a heavy heart, to take the series in five games. The Orioles were obviously an exhausted team after the passing last month of their owner, and it showed in such a tough series. The Reds finally celebrate after 13 years of a roller coaster that at times saw chronic losing and some very serious financial issues. The turn around the franchise has made especially in the last 5 years to reach the pinnacle of sport has to really make this day a special one. Stars like Larry Corcoran and George Gore paraded through the city parade and were proud of their acomplishment. "This is why we struggle and stick with it when things are going bad" said Corcoran, "because it is all the more sweeter now." A recap of the series: Game 1
WP: Jumbo McCinnis LP: Larry Corcoran The Orioles take the opening game of the series on the road as the Reds opened the series with some nerves. John Morrill hit a two run home run, even though he had hit none all season, to open up a nice margn for Jimbo McCinnis. The Reds ralllied in the 9th with two runs and had the tying run on third and the winning run at second with two out. But Oyster Burns grounded out to second and the Orioles escaped with the win. Game 2
WP: Jack Lynch LP: John Schappert The Reds score in the first three innings off John Schappert and take a 4-0 lead. Fref Pfeffer drove in two runs and the lead would hold up this time as Jack Lynch stayed out of major trouble. This was the big advantage the Reds have, they have two dominant starters in Corcoran and Lynch, where most teams only have one and cant match up. Series even going back to Baltimore. Game 3
WP: Larry Corcoran LP: Jumbo McCinnis Corcoran this time bounced back and straightened out his game in an emotional day in Baltimore. A five run 5th inning off of MccGinnis was the diffrence. The poor defense in the inning showed the Oriole stress as 4 erros in the inning were critical, 2 of them by catcher Jackie Hayes. Charlie Sweeney hit a long home run later to seal the win ad give the Reds the series lead. Game 4
WP: Jack Lynch LP: Joe Mcdermott S: Pat McManus The best game of the series. Down by two runs in the bottom of the ninth the Orioles mustered a dramatic rally. With one out John Reilly tripled in a run and was followed by Ed Rowen who singled the tying run home and pulled the loss out of the fire. Still the Reds would not be denied, Tom Brown tripled down the first base line to score Oyster Burns and the lead was again for the visitors. Pat McManus came on and this time despite giving up a single closed the door. A tough loss for the home side that fall behind 3 games to 1, and after the loss the exhaustion on their faces was obvious to all. Game 5
WP: Bobby Mitchell LP: Tom Healey The most lopsided game in World Series history as the Reds had little mercy on their opposition as they rampaged to their clinching World Series win. The Orioles committed 12 errors in the loss and couldnt do the most basic of things, it was in some sense sad to watch. George Gore set a World Series record with 6 RBI and 4 other players drove in 2 runs each. Quite a final game for the series. Last edited by Nick Soulis; 05-21-2010 at 07:17 AM. |
