Angels Take Game 1 With Ease

Game 1 at Fenway Park would seem to be a tough task for the Anaheim Angels but in the end it was the contrary. The Angels behind Jarod Washburn played out to a comfortable 6-1 lead and the first game of this series.

The Angels on offense did it all with the long ball hitting 4 home runs and displaying power that few in that early era had seen. David Eckstein opened the game with a homer against Smoky Joe Wood then late in the game in the 8th and 9th Alex Ochoa, Tim Salmon, and Garrett Anderson added their own muscle.

Washburn didnt go very far, much because of a rain delay and sloppy conditions. He only threw into the fifth inning before Scott Shields and Troy Percival took over.

A nice easy opening win for the Angels; rally monkey not needed.

HIT PARADE STILL SEES ANGELS WIN

Quite a day at Fenway Park especially for the batsman. Fenway always was and always will be a hitters paradise and so was the case in game two of this series where 33 hits were belted out in the 12-9 2002 Angels win. The Angels lead this series now 2 games to none.

Neither Ramon Ortiz or Buck Obrien could really get anyone out and the Angels especially took an 11-3 lead before the home side made a real run at things. Troy Glaus hit a three run home run in the 5th and Tim Salmon drove in 4 runs on the day as the Angels didnt looked fooled by anyhting thrown at them. Clyde Engle had three runs driven in and a home run but the Red Sox could never get really close again and Russ Ortiz stuck through things past the 8th inning even though he had allowed 16 hits.

Anaheim has really pushed aside any thoughts that they are an overrated side and going back to California for game 3 they have scored another win for modern day baseball.

ANGLES SWEEP BOSOX WITH EASE

Anaheim really made things look easy as they disposed and swept the 1912 Boston Red Sox and sparked celebrations in on their home field.

The Angels closed out the series thanks to two stars on the night, Kevin Appier on the mound and Tim Salmon with the bat. The final in this one was 5-3.

Appier was at his best going the distance in the game and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 strikeouts. Appier was just the right man to close out the series and some very good defense behind him made his job even easier.

On the other side Tim Salmon, known as Mr, Angel, came up in a legend like effort in the clincher. Salmon went 2-4 with 4 RBI including a two run home run in the 4th inning. Salmon along with Garrett Anderson who had an outstanding series (.571) were white hot in all three games.

Boston left with their hands held low, surely they were a better team then what they showed, but now their chance has past.

Many are already pointing to this series and concluding that the old baseball teams cant compete with the modern game.

INDIANS FOLD LATE IN GREAT SERIES OPENER

An opening game that will be remembered for a while excited fans throughout the baseball world as the 1939 Yankees came from behind to beat the 1995 Cleveland Indians 8-7 in dramatic fashion to take game 1 of the series.

Trailing by a score of 6-3 the Yankees had the lead into the top of the 8th. That is when Eddie Murray homered to right with 2 men on to tie the score off of Red Ruffing. The Indians then did their part for the upset and took the lead in the top of the 9th when again Eddie Murray hit a sacrafice fly.

Mike Hargrove then gave the ball to Jose Mesa in hopes of closing the door. Joe McCarthy countered and pinch hit with Lou Gehrig, who is no longer a starter. Old Lou came through singleling to left and leaving for a pinch runner. Bill Knickerbocker then pinch hit and delivered a double and the Yanks were in business.

Mesa then settled down and struck out two consecutive batters, setting up a 2 out showdown with Red Rolfe. Ball 1. Ball 2. Foul. And then a slap over the shortstops head, Kenny Lofton's throw is late, and the Yankees take game 1.

Truly a great opening game, surely more to come.

MESA REDEEMS HIMSELF AS TRIBE WIN

Jose Mesa got a second chance to close what he couldnt do in game 1 of this best of five series and close he did. Mesa pitched the last two innings in relief for starter Dennis Martinez to save a 4-3 tight win and tie the series at 1.

The Indians got off to a good start getting 2 runs in the first two innings off of Yankee starter Lefty Gomez taking advantage of poor Yankee defense who would make 4 errors on the day. The Yankees came back as Joe Dimaggio homered in the 5th inning to tie the game at 2.

Sandy Alomar and Carlos Baegra drove in runs in the 6th to put the Indians right back up, the tribe would never trail in this game.

Down a run late the entire crowd at Yankee Stadium expected their team to come back again like they did in game 1, but this time Cleveland wouldnt let it happen, and have impressed in these first two games in New York, proving they could play with the mighty Yankees.

Series goes to Cleveland all even.

INDIANS CLOSING IN BEHIND HERSHISER

Playing before a capacity crowd at Jacobs Field the 1995 Cleveland Indians built on their momentum from game 2 and bested the 39 Yankees to take a crucial lead in the series.

The final was 9-4 and Orel Hershiser although past his prime, pitched with a veterans savy to go the distance and get the win. Hershiser struck out 11 and let up only 2 extra base hits, including holding Joe Dimaggio to an 0-5 performance.

Eddie Murray is continueing his incredible series driving in 5 runs on this night including a 2 run shot off Atley Donald in the seventh inning. Murray has driven in 10 runs already in the 3 game series.

Now the Indians can pull the upset of the tournament with another win. It wont be easy for sure but with confidence on their side and a energetic home crowd, the recipe for success is there.

Yanks Slam Indians; Tie Series

Some teams find it very hard to accept losing and the Yankees of Joe McCarthey's era are just that team. Facing elimination the Yankees told starter Monte Pearson just to sit back and relax as the offense lit up Jacobs Field in a 12-1 win.

Joe Gordon homered twice in this blow out, both two run shots as New York 7 run lead before the Indians even had a chance to score. George Selkirk scored three times and also went yard as Mark Clark of the home team couldnt settle down and took the loss.

Rumor has it that Joe Dimaggio talked to his teamates before the game and the often quiet captain had much to say to his team, that looked lost in Game 3.

Still there is one more to play back at Old Yankee Stadium where both game 1 and 2 were very close. This Yankee team was just too good to go out so soon.

CLEVELAND CELEBRATES MONUMENTAL UPSET

In the biggest of upsets we have seen so far the Cleveland Indians knock out one of the favorites to make it to the end, as the 95 Indians beat the 39 Yankees in the deciding 5th game of the series.

Orel Hershiser as he did in game one had all of his stuff working and had the luxury of getting the cushion of an early lead. Hershiser pitched with confidence and except for a mistake to Lou Gehrig, he was masterfull and was on the moiund in the end when his team clinched it.

Carlos Baerga drove in 2 runs on the day and Eddie Murray hit yet another home run, this time for insurance in the 9th. It was indeed a testament to the Indians who did lose their early lead on the Gehrig homer but answered right back t afirm their path to win this critical game.

Joy in Cleveland and the mighty Yankees have fallen, but truly their are many more of their kind to come.

Ouch, what an upset. I'm looking forward to the upcoming '87 Twins series. They were one of my favorite non-Yankee teams to watch, so I'm conflicted on who to root for. Keep up the good work.

1982 St. Louis Cardinals vs 1916 Boston Red Sox

1916 Boston Red Sox
Record: 91-63
Finish: Won World Series over Brooklyn Robins
Manager: Bill Carrigan
Team ERA: 2.48
Team AVG: .248
Home Runs: 14
Key Players: Larry Gardner 3B (.308, 62 RBI), Babe Ruth SP (23-12, 1.75 ERA), Harry Hooper OF (.271, 27 SB)

A team lead by its pitching staff only batted .248 as a unit. The offensive side is a concern without any real big name to carry the load but this team still won a title in impressive fashion. Ruth was dominant on the mound and Dutch Leonard wasnt a picnic to face either. Some are still saying this team isnt overhyped however, even for their era, now is their chance.

1982 St. Louis Cardinals
Record: 92-70
Finish: Won world series over Brewers
Manager: Whitey Herzog

Key Players: George Hendrick OF (.281, 19 HR, 104 RBI), Bruce Sutter CL (2.90 ERA, 36 S), Lonnie Smith OF (.307, 68 SB)

A typical Whitey Herzog team the Cardinals loved to run and play defense in their spacious park. The Cards also threw the ball well with Andujar and Forsch, but the goal was to get the ball into the hands of Bruce Sutter. The Cardinals were fun to watch because of their style, and really match the same style with some of the early century teams.

Game 1 at Busch Stadium: Joaquin Andujar (15-10, 2.47) vs Babe Ruth (23-12, 1.75)
Game 2 at Busch Stadium: Bob Forsch (15-9, 3.48) vs Dutch Leonard (18-12, 2.36)
Game 3 at Fenway Park: Steve Mura (12-11, 4.05) vs Ernie Shore (16-10, 2.63)

CARDS OPEN WITH WIN A BUSCH

The 1982 St. Louis Cardinals got off to a good start behind Juaquin Andujar as they beat Babe Ruth and the 1916 Red Sox 3-2 to open the series.

Pinky Williams of the Sox had given the Red Sox a lead in the 7th inning wiht a two run single after Ruth and Andujar were matching eachother in a great pitching duel.

The Cards answered however in te bottom of the 7th as they knocked Ruth out of the game and Keith Hernandez singled off Herb Pennock to give the Cards the lead late again.

Bruce Sutter then came on for a perfect ninth on for relief of Andujar, who recived a standing ovation from the Cardinals crowd. Sutter slammed the door and St. Louis won a close opening game and beat the Red Sox best pitcher and maybe hitter (Ruth doubled on the night) in the process.

Seems To Be Getting Easier In St. Louis

In a smooth and efficient win behind starter Bob Forsch, the 1982 St Louis Cardinals took a 2 games to none lead over the 16 Red Sox with an 8-1 win.

Forsch went the distance and saw his offense make Dutch Leonard suffer by allowing 7 earned runs in the defeat. The Cardinals broke open a competitive game with 5 runs in the 8th inning.

Willie McGee hit a bases loaded three run double in the inning as Boston was clearly beginning to lose its confidence having had only 6 hits on offense and at that point of the game, more earned runs would be too much to overcome with Bruce Sutter looming; in the end Sutter wasnt even needed.

Keith Hernandez continued his hot hitting with a home run not to mention his stellar defense at first base. Willie McGee drove in 4 runs in the game scoring twice himself.

The Cardinals dont even look like they are being challanged and have sweep on their mind heading to Fenway Park.

On Only 2 Hits Boston Extends Series

The 1916 Red Sox finally got their kind of game in the third game of this series and made the most of it, slipping past the 82 Cardinals by the slim margin of 3-2 and avoiding defeat in this series.

The Sox got only two hits in this game but it was good enough for the win. Tilly Walker doubled in a run and the quick Sox stole two bases in the second inning to break out on top by a two run margin off of Steve Mura in the second inning.

With the lead Ernie Shore went to work and deadened the Cardinals all afternoon. Mike Ramsey took Shore deep for a 409 foot homerun over what is eventually to become the green monster at Fenway in the 7th inning to cut the lead to one.

Vean Gregg however did his best Bruce Sutter impression and closed out the game in the 9th in relief. Boston now tries to do it again in Game 4 but will be ill advised if they expect only to get 2 hits again.

CARDINALS DESTROY SOX; MOVE ON

In the end it wasnt even close.

The 1982 Cardinals proved their superiority over their opponents in their clinching game 4 win at Fenway Park, winning by a heavy run margin 13-1.

Carl Mays couldnt make it out of the third inning having allowed 6 runs already, Mays had little to nothing working to start this game and he picked at bad day to be at his worst.

Willie McGee hit a two run home run to right in the third to make it 6-0 after three. Mcgee would drive in two runs on the day, as would Keith Hernandez and Tommy Herr. The Cardinals were determined to get off to a good start and did so, closing out the pressure of the match from the opening pitches.

On the mound John Stuper went as far as he could, into the 9th inning and no doubt the lead he was given allowed him to relax and pitch with more confidence. Sutter came on in the 9th for the final out just for good measure.

After the four games this series wasnt really close at all. The Cardinals proved time and time again how much deeper they were as a team. Deserved winners they move on.

1987 Minnesota Twins vs 1950 New York Yankees

1950 NY Yankees
Record: 98-56
Finish: Won World Series over Phillies
Manager: Casey Stengel
Team ERA: 4.15
Team AVG: .282
Home Runs: 159
Key Players: Yogi Berra C (.322, 124 RBI), Joe Dimaggio OF (.301, 32 HR), Vic Raschi P (21-8, 4.00)

This team did it more with the bats then with the arms as the Yankee dynasty was in its prime in the middle of the century. This was Dimaggio's last strong season with young Yogi Berra bursting on the scene. If anything however the pitching was a bit suspect and something to be watched, especially by Casey Stengel.

1987 Minnesota Twins
Record: 85-77
Finish: Won World Series over Cardinals
Manager: Tom Kelly
Team ERA: 4.63
Team: AVG: .261
Home Runs: 196
Key Players: Kirby Puckett OF (.332, 28 HR), Gary Gaetti 3B (31 HR, 109 RBI), Frank Viola P (17-10, 2.90)

This team has MAJOR pitching concerns with a team ERA usually not good enough for a .500 finish. Still the team did hit almost 200 homeruns and plays so well in the Metrodome. Critics have squaked that this team is one of the weakest to win it all, but numbers are numbers and the games will be played between the lines with the likes of Kirby Puckett and Bert Blylaven leading the way. Tom Kelly was a mastermind as well.

Pitching matchups

Game 1 at Yankee Stadium: Frank Viola (17-10, 2.90 ERA) vs Vic Raschi (21-8, 4.00)
Game 2 at Yankee Stadium: Bert Blyleven (15-12, 4.01) vs Eddie Lopat (18-8, 3.47)
Game 3 at Metrodome: Allie Reynolds vs (16-12, 3.74) vs Les Straker (8-10, 4.37)

DiMaggio Helps Yanks Take Game 1

Who says Joe DiMaggio has nothing left in the tank? The 30+ centerfielder anchored the lineup in game 1 against the 87 Twins and lead them to a 4-2 win.

DiMaggio banged out a two run home run in the third inning off of Frank Viola to put the Yanks up 3 runs. Joltin Joe also appeared limber in center field covering his ground on a number of plays.

Vic Raschi was a force on the mound for the home side frustrating the Twins to no runs until he tired in the 9th inning. Casey Stengal at that point caeme to the mound to see how his right hander was doing but Vic told him and Yogi Berra, "he had enough to finish."

The other star centerfielder in this game Kirby Puckett did drive in two runs in the ninth, but couldnt do it on his own as the Twins fell behind early and couldnt turn thins around. In fact Puckett came up with the bases loaded in the ninth and hit a double with two outs, on the same play Randy Bush tried to score all the way from third but was thrown out at the plate on a perfect relay throw from third baseman Doc Brown.

Yankees Take Game 2 In 11 Innings

Tommy "Clutch" Heinrich hit a ground ball to short with the infield in in the bottom of the 11th. Racing home was Johnny Hopp who beat the throw to the plate and the Yankees came from behind to take game twp 6-5.

The Yankees fell behind by three runs in the very first inning as Ed Lopat allowed three runs in the first inning including a 2 run home run by Gary Gaetti. The Twins felt good with the lead and Bert Blyleven on the hill.

Up by a score of 5-1 going into the bottom of the 5th the Yankees started to chip away and got two in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 2. Then in the bottom of the 8th with Blyleven still on the mound the Yanks came all the way back.

Johnny Hopp drove in a run and then scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to tie the score and set Yankee stadium alive. The game at this point seemed to turn as Minnesota knew they blew their chance.

In extra innings the Yankees got some great pitching from Ernie Nevel as Casey Stengel wove his magic. The winning run was the satisfaction and New York now are in full command going to Minnesota.

METRODOME HOME SWEET

The 1987 Minnesota Twins love their home dome and load restless fans because it helps them win. In game three of this series facing elimination the Twins shocked the 1950 Yankees who may as well been on Mars in their 9-1 loss.

The Twins scored 4 runs in the second inning led by a 2 run double by Kirby Puckett as Allie Reynolds had a tough night on the mound. In fact Reynolds wouldnt get out of the 3rd inning and before they knew it the Yanks were by six runs going into the 4th.

Little known Les Straker pitched well wiht little pressure and other then not being able to get out Yogi Berra (3-3) did a very impressive job on the Yankee offense. Joe Dimaggio was hitless for the second day in a row.

Puckett ended up driving 3 runs in on the day and the win came easily. The Metrodome as always was on fire and little places in baseball history are as load.

With the Yankees still up in the series, game 4 should be very interesting.

Yankees End Drama With Series Win

It took one game for the 1950 Yankees to get used to the turf and the space ball played in the Metrodome. A big way of making that happen is great pitching and Tommy Byrne out of nowhere pitched a gem in the 7-0 Yankee clinching win.

Byrne went 8.6 innings of shutout ball and allowed only 3 hits, an incredible feat indeed in the dome. Byrne did tire in the end but at that point New York was already thinking about the next round.

Johnny Hopp went 2-4 and drove in three runs as the Yankees played some small ball, a tactical diffrence then what we saw in game 3. Still it was the pitching that made the diffrence.

Mike Smithson just wasnt as good as he needed to be and allowed five earned runs while walking 6 men.

The favorites walk away in this series win.
