Matlack Likely Top Amateur Pick--Unless Trade Overwhelms Padres

With the June 15 amateur draft approaching at the speed of a Nolan Ryan fastball, San Diego Padres co-GM Dan S. indicated that left-hander Jon Matlack will likely be the No. 1 overall pick.

"We will be keeping the first pick in the draft and taking Jon Matlack on the condition that we can get him signed," the Padres' front office man said. "That is unless some team is willing to offer up two starting pitchers, one (being) a top of the rotation guy."

San Diego holds the No. 1 overall selection in the inaugural amateur draft by virtue of the worst record in the Joy in Mudville League.

Matlack and right-hander J.R. Richard, both 20, are considered to be the top pitchers in the draft.

Milwaukee-Washington Forge First Trade in Joy in Mudville History

The first trade in Joy in Mudville history is in the books.

The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to send minor league pitcher Wayne Twitchell to the Washington Senators for right fielder Larry Biittner.

Twitchell, a 22-year-old right-hander, was 0-2 with a 1.69 for the Brewers' Triple-A affiliate. He struck out 21 hitters in 21.1 innings.

Biittner, the pride of Pocahontas, Iowa, batted .283 with one home run and eight RBI in 26 at-bats for Washington.

"These are exciting times for the Washington Senators organization," said team GM Dan S. "Pitching is the name of the game and we believe that Wayne Twitchell will be a key part to our future success."

Washington holds the ninth overall pick in tonight's amateur draft. Milwaukee will select 11th.

Reds Land Dobson from Padres for Minor League Prospect

Just hours from the start of the inaugural Joy in Mudville amateur draft, the San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds have swapped pitchers.

The Reds sent minor league pitcher Pedro Borbon to the Padres for starter Pat Dobson.

"We're both trying to improve our pitching," said Dan S., San Diego co-GM. "Giving up a quality starter like Pat Dobson is tough, but we believe Pedro Borbon will be a big part of our future."

Dobson posted a 3-5 record with a 2.51 ERA for the last-place Padres. San Diego has the worst record in the league. The right-handed Dobson struck out 62 batters in 89.2 innings this season. He has made 14 starts.

"This may be the move that leads to a division title," said Tim L., Cincinnati GM.

The Reds (36-26) hold down third place in the National League West. Cincinnati trails first-place Houston by only two games however.

Borbon, 23, was 1-4 with a 3.68 ERA for the Oakwood Comets, the Triple-A farm club of the Reds.

Padres Tab Matlack as Top Pick in Inaugural Amateur Draft

As expected the San Diego Padres made pitcher Jon Matlack the historic first selection in the Joy in Mudville inaugural amateur draft.

"We're very excited to have Jon pull on the beautiful San Diego Padres uniform," said co-GM Dan S.

The Padres were reportedly contacted by numerous teams in an attempt to pry the top pick away.

"We listened to every offer, but in the end this was best for our organization," said the Padre GM.

"It's a true honor to be chosen as the top pick in this first draft," said Matlack. "Hopefully, my career will measure up to the lofty expectations."

Cleveland followed by choosing flame-throwing pitcher James Rodney "J.R." Richard, a native of Vienna, Virginia.

The string of 20-year-olds continued as St. Louis took infielder Cecil Cooper.

Minnesota then drafted 18-year-old left-handed pitcher Terry Forster. Montreal rounded out the top five by picking 20-year-old pitcher Burt Hooton from the University of Texas.

Pitching was the hot item as 16 first-round picks were hurlers. In fact, 10 of the first 11 picks were pitchers. Only four of the first 16 selections were position players.

"That's the name of the game," said Chicago Cub GM Bob B who took Ross Grimsley at No. 10.

Washington Adds to Arms Race

The city of Washington, D.C. has always been known for its movers and shakers. Add Senators' GM Dan S. to that list.

Washington pulled off its second trade this week by dealing aging veteran Lee Maye to the Kansas City Royals for left-handed pitcher Jim Rooker.

"You saw how important pitching is with the draft," said Dan S. "We feel Jim Rooker will be a mainstay in our rotation."

Rooker, 27, appeared in just five games for the Royals. The left-hander made two starts. Rooker was 0-1 with one save. He posted a 3.94 ERA.

In addition, Washington released pitcher Pedro Ramos.

Maye, meanwhile, was the Senators' starting right fielder. The 35-year-old left-handed bat was hitting .305 with five home runs and 19 RBI in 45 games for Washington.

Just prior to the amateur draft, Washington acquired pitcher Wayne Twitchell from Milwaukee for right fielder Larry Biittner.

Houston's Wilson No-Hits Cincinnati

Houston's Don Wilson became the first pitcher in Joy in Mudville League history to toss a no-hitter.

Wilson (9-4) walked one and struck out nine en route to a 6-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in the Astrodome. The 25-year-old right-hander lost his perfect game bid when he committed a throwing error on a ground ball by Reds' second baseman Jimmy Stewart to lead off the sixth.

Wilson later walked Bobby Tolan in the seventh. Wilson retired Hal McRae, Pete Rose and Johnny Rose for the final three outs.

Wilson's gem follows the combined no-hit efforts of St. Louis right-handed starting pitcher Reggie Cleveland and reliever Chuck Taylor. The Cardinal do combined to no-hit Montreal 10-0 on April 14.

Blue Man Group Leads as Oakland Breaks Out A's Game

The Oakland A's have put the rest of the American League West in the rearview mirror and appear headed for a playoff berth.

The A's have won eight of their last 10 games and opened up a 12.5-game lead over second-place Chicago. Oakland boasts the best record in the Joy in Mudville at 53-25.

"We're clicking on all cylinders right now," said GM/manager Bob B. "Being a Cub fan, I'm not used to this."

Oakland is well balanced on both the mound and at the plate. The A's lead the American League in runs scored (391) and base on balls (325). The A's pitching staff is second best in runs allowed (289).

Left-handed ace Vida Blue (pictured below) is the Cy Young front-runner with a magnificent 12-1 record with a 1.64 ERA. Al Downing (12-2) and Jim "Catfish" Hunter (10-8) are also in double figures in wins. Closer Dooley Womack has 14 saves and a miniscule 0.99 ERA.

Offensively, Don Mincher (.282-16 home runs-62 RBIs), Reggie Jackson (.290-15-50) and Rick Monday (.310-11-41) are potential All-Stars.

Interesting...in real life, Wilson "no-hitted" the Reds for his second career no-hitter—and the day before, at the Astros' expense, the Reds' Jim Maloney had pitched his second career no-hitter.
