MLB Rosters Expand: Jays to get a Look at 4 Prospects

September 1st, 2009.

The Major League Rosters expanded today allowing teams to bring up some help for the last month of the season. It is a perfect time of the year for teams to get a look at top prospects who may be auditioning for spots with the big club next season. The Blue Jays have announced that they have called up 4 players form AAA Syracuse to give some regulars a much needed day off.

CL Steve 'Cookie Monster' Perkins (21 years old RHP)
5-3 39 SV 1.89 ERA (AAA Syracuse)
-Drafted in the 4th round 104th overall in 2007 he has electric stuff and can touch 100 MPH on the radar gun. he looks like the Closer of the future for the Jays.

SP Antonio Perez (21 year old LHP)
15-4 2.51 ERA in 25 Starts (AAA Syracuse)
-Drafted in 3rd Round 74th overall in 2007. He looks to have average stuff and could be a #5/spot starter in the Majors.

RF Alonso Martinez (22 years old Bats: R Throws: R)
.308 11HR 45 RBI (AAA Syracuse)
-Signed as a non-drafted free agent from the Dominican Republic in 2008. He moved up through the system fast and looks like he could be a starting RF in the future. He does strikeout a lot and is not the best defensively.

C Nick Cooper (23 years old Bats: R Throws: R)
.284 36 HR 103 RBI (AAA Syracuse)
-A waiver claim in 2007 from the Florida Marlins he is the jays back up catcher of the future. He is not as good defensively as current Jays backup Rufiano Troni but has more offensive upside.

GM Ryan Stewart commented on the callups "It is a good time ofr us to get a look at some of our kids. We have a pretty large lead in the AL East and can afford to give some of these players a good long look for roster spots next season"

Jays Best in Majors, Will Face Rangers in ALDS

October 5th, 2009.

The Toronto Blue Jays capped off a spectacular Regular season today with a 8-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins at home at Rogers Center. Rookie SP Antonio Perez got the start so the jays could rest their top starters in preperation for the American League Division Series. Perez went 5 innings giving up 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits and struck out 4 in his Major League debut. Perez got the start for the Blue Jays Ace SP Christian Jacobs who is scheduled to pitch game 1 of the ALDS.

The Blue Jays also send back all 4 of their September callups to AAA Syracuse but CL Steve Perkins and RF Alonso Martinez made big impressions on Jays GM Ryan Stewart "Perkins went 3-1 with 9 saves and a 1.76 ERA in the month of September for us and Manager Tomas Vega even slotted him into the closers position. RF Alonso Martinez had a .236 batting average with 1 HR and 7 RBI but had gotten off to a slow start, he went 1 for his first 14 but had 6 hits in 18 at bats to finish off the season. I expect big things from both of these players next season"

The Blue Jays (110-52) will face the Texas Rangers who won the American League Wild Card with a record of 92-70. In the other American League Series the Minnesota Twins (95-67) will face the Seattle Mariners (99-63) who are making their 3rd consecutive poast season appearance and are trying to repeat as World Series Champs. In the National League the Cincinnati Reds (97-65) will face the NL Wild Card winning Atlanta Braves (88-74) who are trying to avenge a 7 game loss to the Mariners in last years Fall Classic. The Philedelphia Phillies (91-71) will face the Arizona Diamondbacks (89-73) in the other National League Division Series.

October 10th, 2009.

The Toronto Blue Jays were eliminated from post season play today in 4 games at the hands of the Texas Rangers. GM Ryan Stewart was quoted as saying "I don't understand it, we put up the best record in baseball and than forget how to play when the playoffs roll around" Rumors abound that the Jays GM is contimplating firing Manager Tomas Vega and bring someone in who has a better record of success in post season baseball.

The Blue Jays jumped all over the Rangers scoring 11 runs on 18 hits. 1B Nathan Wilder went 4-4 with 5 RBI, SS Richard Evans went 3-3 with 5 RBI and C Hugh Edwards went 4-5 and scored 3 runs. Christian Jacobs went 5.1 innings giving up 5 hits and allowing no runs with 4 strikeouts.

Toronto 2 - Texas 7

S: J.Weareowear (1)

The Jays could only manage 4 hits off of the Rangers pitchers and Toronto SP Bill Arkell continues to struggle in the postseason losing his 3 straight decision. Rangers SP L. Gonzalez pitched 5.2 innings of 3 hit ball while allowing 1 run and K'ing 4.

Game #3

SP Baio Hor (21-8 2.62 )
SP Kiminobu Hashimoto (17-5 3.08)

Toronto 4 - Texas 6

L: K. Hashimoto (0-1)

Texas 3B Tim Wilson hit 2 home runs and drove in 4 runs to give Texas the victory. Hashimoto lasted only 5 innings and allowed all 6 Ranger runs.

SP Raul Ruiz (14-3 2.56)

Toronto 2 - Texas 6

The Toronto Starter was supurb in 33 starts for the Jays this season with 20 wins and only 7 losses, 275 K and a 2..04 ERA in 251.1 innings of work.

Jays Trade Allstar CL to Boston for Bullpen Help

December 3rd, 2009.

The Toronto Blue Jays and GM Ryan Stewart announced today that they have traded 3 time Allstar CL Lorenzo Silva to Boston for CL Vincent Evans and MR Julius Perez.

CL Lorenzo Silva was 5-5 with 34 SV and a 3.00 ERA in 62 games for Toronto last season. Silva is making $6,400,000 million per season and is signed for the next 3 season. GM Ryan Stewart commented on the Trade of Silva "You never want to lose an allstar arm like Lorenzo, but he makes a lot of money and we are very close to our budget and will have a number of players coming up for big contracts next season. CL Steve Perkins also did such a good job in September last seaon that we are going to give him the oppertunity as out full time CL in 2010"

The players that the Jays got back are a pair of young relievers who could both end up pitching with the Jays in 2010.

CL Vincent Evans (22 years old RHP)
1-3 13 SV 3.96 ERA (AA Portland)
-Drafted in the 13th round of 352nd overall in 2008 by Boston he has a very lively arm 94-96 MPH and has the make up to be a dominant reliever. He will be given the chance to make the club out of Spring Training and if he doesn't he will start in AAA Syracuse.

MR Julius Perez (21 years old RHP)
1-1 5.60 ERA in 6 Games with Boston last year
-Drafted in the 7th round 193rd overall in 2007 by Boston. Like V. Evans he has a very lively arm and has been known to hit the 100 MPH range on the radar gun. He will also be given a chance to make the big club out of spring training but could start the year for AAA Syracuse.

Jays Announce Minor League Award Winners

December 21th, 2009.

The Toronto Blue Jays announced today the annual player of the year awards for each level in their minor league system:

AAA Syracuse
CL Steve 'Cookie Monster' Perkins
5-3 39 SV 1.83 (with AAA Syracuse)
3-1 9 SV 1.76 (with Toronto in September)
A 4th round Draft Pick in 2007 out of Baylor University was outstanding for both AAA Syracuse and for the Jays in September in 2009. With CL Lorenzo Silve traded to Boston he will get the oppertunity to be Toronto's full time closer in 2010.

AA New Hampshire
C Lloyd Matthews
.296 8 HR 31 RBI (with AA New Hampshire)
The 24 year old was a 2007 2nd round draft pick out of Georgia Tech and has progressed nicely to this point. I see him as a future back up at the major league level but he may be blocked with C Nick Cooper in Syracuse. He will likely platoon with Cooper and will fight for the back up spot if C Rufiano Troni should falter.

High A Dunedin
SP Andy 'Major' Simmons
8-2 2.67 20 BB 83 K in 104.2 IP (with A Dunedin)
The 20 year old was the centerpiece of the deal that sent SP Francisco Romero to the White Sox. He is a former 1st round pick 9th overall and exploaded for the Jays in Dunedin after a subpar start to the season for Chicago's AA Affiliate. He is on the fast track and will likely start at AA New Hampshire and could get an invitation to Spring Training to see what he can do against Major League Hitters.

Low A Lansing
2B lorenzo Vazquez

.333 8 HR 53 RBI (with A Lansing)
A second round pick out of highschool in 2008 has progressed nicely to this point. He is only 20 years old and was very raw when he was drafted in 2008. He could start in AA New Hampshire this season but it is likely that he will be assigned to A Dunedin for at least the start of the 2010 season. He is still very young at 20 and I see no reason to rush him.

Short Season A - Auburn
2B Juan Comancho
.296 1 HR 34 RBI (with SA Auburn)
A 7th round pick 194th overall in 2007 out of Highschool has progressed slowly through the organization spending hte past 3 season in Pulaski and Auburn. He finally put together a good season in 2009 and looks like he could be on his way to Lansing for 2010. He is a defensive wizzard and can play all of the infield positions except C.

Pulaski - Rookie League
SP Nathan Bergeron
7-3 2.12 ERA (Pulaski (R))
A 10th round Pick 296th overall out of the University of Missouri in 2009. He is a big right hander with average stuff (6/6/7) ratings and an above average fastball 94-96 MPH. He could blossom into a bonafide major league starter but I think he is more suited to being a long reliever/spot starter in the majors. He is going to start the year in A Lansing and I will watch him from there.

Thanks jtb,

The Playoffs sure are a crap shoot! I thought for sure I would make it out of the first round last year but it was like my guys forgot how to play once October rolled around. Oh well maybe this year! and as long as I make the playoffs I shouldn't get fired. Although Ted Rogers did tell me that he expects us to win it all this season.

Blue Jays Open Up Spring Training

March 3rd, 2010.

The Toronto Blue Jayspitchers and catchers began arriving in Dunedin Florida at the Jays Spring Training Facility today as they begin the push to the start of the regular season. The position players do not have to report until next week but many of them are already here with one thing on their mind...avenging their 3rd consecutive early exit from the playoffs last season.

There are a number of young jays players who receivd an invitation to spring traning this season and have legitimate shots at making the big club this year. They include:

3B Dave Chambers (Toronto's 1st round pick in 2007)
1B Bill Darby (Signed as a Non-drafted FA from Canada in 2008)
C Lloyd Matthews (Toronto's 2nd Round Pick in 2007)
C Nick Cooper (Claimed off Waivers from Florida in 2007)
RF Alonso Martinez (Signed as a Non-drafted FA From the Dominincan Republic in 2008)
SP Anthony Simmons (Aquired from Chicago (A) in 2009)
SP Antonio Perez (Toronto's 3rd Round Pick in 2007)
MR Julius Perez (Aquired from Boston in an Offseason Trade)
CL Carlos Yhuit (Toronto's 11th Round Pick in 2008)
CL Vincent Evans (Aquired from Boston in an Offseason Trade)

The biggest competition will be for the back up catcher position as well as for the last 3 spots in the bullpenn. One of those bullpen spots is most likely allready spoken for as rookie CL Steve Perkins will be the teams closer with the trade of CL Lorenzo Silva to Boston. GM Ryan Stewart Commented on his young players in camp "We really have to hand it too our scouting staff as our top 3 picks in the 2007 draft have a shot at making the big league club as well we have some late round picks (like C.Yhuit from the 11th round) who could make the team. The future looks promising and if we can keep on developing our own talent in house this organization could be very successful in the long run"

Jays Win Season Opener in Boston

April 5rd, 2010.

The Toronto Blue Jays won their season opener against the Red Sox today in Boston in front of a sellout crowd 8-1. Toronto Rookie RF Alonso Martinez got the start in RF and did not dissapoint going 2-5 with 2 doubles and scored 2 runs. 2B Nathan Elliott went 2-4 with a triple and 3 RBI and 1B Nathan Wilder drove in a pair with a double. 8 runs was more than enough offence as SP Christian Jacobs showed why he was the American League Cy Young Award Winner last year going 9 innings giving up only 6 hits and 1 run while walking 2 and striking out 4 for the victory.

Robles Dominates Devil Rays in Shutout

April 10th, 2010.

It was a razor sharp performance from SP Jose Robles of the Toronto Blue Jays against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He fashioned a fine 3-hitter in blanking the Rays 7-0 with 7 strikeouts and only 2 walks.

The Blue Jays are 5-0 to start the season including a 3 game sweep of the Red Sox in Boston and taking the first two games of this 3 game set agains the Devil Rays in Tampa.
