Week Five: May 7-13, 2007
5/07: vs Nationals (11-21/7-11 Rd) - Zach Jackson (2-1, 1.15) vs Mike Hinckley (1-3, 5.68)
Jackson continued to be our "ace" of the year, and went out and got a win for us today. He pitched seven innings giving up four hits, one run, and striking out five. Corey Hart had the big RBI, a bases loaded double in the first that gave us all we needed. Erick Aybar was 3-4 with a run, RBI, and walk, and a stolen base. Polanco scored a run in his Brewer debut, and was 1-4, reaching on an error also. Outcome: Win, 4-2 - WP: Jackson (3-1), S: Vazquez (4) ![]() 5/08: vs Nationals - Ben Sheets (2-4, 5.80) vs C. Stammen (1-3, 3.94) Sheets pitched like the old Benny. He went the full game, and allowed only three hits, striking out eight, and walking ZERO. That is the biggest stat I think. The bottom of the lineup picked it up today, as Molina and Polanco both had RBIs, and scored two runs a piece. Gywnn had three RBIs, and Fielder was also 2-4 with a RBI, and a triple. Outcome: Win, 7-0 - Ben Sheets (3-4) ![]() 5/09: vs Nationals - Steve Hammond (0-0, 0.00) vs Jeff Neimann (2-3, 5.13) Hammond gave us another very well pitched performance, and we finally pulled off our first sweep of the year! Juan Rivera was 3-4 with two RBIs, and Tony Gwynn was 2-4 with a run and RBI. Weeks got injured in the first inning and will probably miss a week. Figgins and Rottino will start at second base for the time being, but man do we lose a lot of power. Fielder is going to have to step it up this next week. Outcome: Win, 4-2 - WP: Hoffman (1-0), S: Vazquez (5) ![]() SWEEEEP!!! 5/10: OFF 5/11: @ Mets (22-13/12-3 Hm) - Carlos Villanueva (0-2, 2.86) vs Pedro Martinez (3-1, 2.23) We only had three hits in this game, but the small ball payed off, and we beat the mighty Mets! CV pitched very well, only giving up two hits and a run in six innings. We scored on two sac flies, and a bases loaded walk. They came from Hart, Herrera, and Polanco. Shields, Majewski, and Vazquez all made big appearances out of the pen, and were able to hold down the win in 2.1 innings amongst the three of them. Blanton made his first appearance out of the pen and gave up a run in 0.2 innings. Outcome: Win, 3-2 - WP: Shields (3-0), S: Vazquez (6) ![]() 5/12: @ Mets - Yovani Gallardo (3-2, 3.12) vs Willie Collazo (4-0, 1.11) Blanton gave up five of the nine runs they scored, but Gallardo struggled also, and we could not recover. Juan Rivera went yard twice, and was 3-4, and Erick Aybar also hit his first homer of the season. Tony Gwynn was 3-4 with a stolen base. We still gotta' get this series, though, as Jackson is going next game. Outcome: Loss, 3-9 - LP: Gallardo (3-3) 5/13: @ Mets - Zach Jackson (3-1, 1.17) vs Michael Devaney (3-1, 1.93) I think this was a very winnable series. In this game Jackson had the game he was due for, and lasted only five innnings. He gave up five runs. We left a lot of guys on base again, and had nine hits and drew five walks. Jenkins was 3-5 with a RBI, and Fielder also had two RBIs. Erick Aybar was 2-4 with two runs scored. A big blow came to us when Tony Gwynn fractured his finger making a defensive play. I think I am going to put him on the 15-day DL because it says he will miss 1-2 weeks, but I have a feeling it might linger, and I want it fully healed. Outcome: Loss, 6-9 - LP: Jackson (3-2) We decided to put Gwynn on the 15-day DL and in return called up 25-year old Ben Watson, who we acquired early this year in the National trade. Right now that trade appears to have gone down the drain for both teams, so we will see whether he can maybe right the ship a little bit in a fourth outfielder role. Hart will play center full time until Gwynn gets back. Rickie is still out for another six days, so we will need some pop in our lineup. Jay's Thoughts: Like I said I thought that this was a very winnable series in New York. A 4-2 week isn't bad with me, but we are going on a very tough stretch here, and need to start putting some series together if we want to make the comeback that I think we are capable of. We need to start coming through with hits with guys in scoring position, and so far this year it has only been Gwynn and Rivera that have done that. That is a big reason we got Polanco, who has already come through for us in that eight spot. Week Six: May 14-20, 2006
5/14: @ Phillies (23-15/11-6 Hm) - Ben Sheets (3-4, 4.74) vs Ben Julianel (1-3, 4.12)
Sheets actually pitched very well in this game, and we just could not find a way to hit the ball. Benny lasted six innings and gave up two runs and seven hits. Majewski struggled again giving up two runs and not getting an out. Cory Hart picked up the only RBI and was 2-4 with two stolen bases. Outcome: Loss, 1-5 - LP: Sheets (3-5) 5/15: @ Phillies - Steve Hammond (0-0, 1.38) vs Kyle Kendrick (2-1, 1.89) Steve Hammond pitched very well, going six and allowing only one run, but Turnbow, Kline, and Majewski allowed a combined five runs in the final two innings. Juan Rivera hit a homer, but that was all the offense we had, and we have lost yet another game, just when I thought we were getting hot. Outcome: Loss, 1-6 - LP: Turnbow (0-3) Following this game we demoted Gary Majewski to AAA and recalled Ben Hendrickson from AAA, where he was doing a little better. My scouts tell me that Hendrickson should regroup and pitch very well as he's got all the potential. Hopefully they are right and he can pitch well in his return. I am sure we will see Majewski again sooner or later. 5/16: @ Phillies - Carlos Villanueva (0-2, 2.57) vs Ryan Madson (3-0, 1.07) It seems as if right now we just can't put two and two together right now. I don't know what to do with this team anymore, as if we don't get this turned around quickly, I will most likely be fired. It helps that Gallardo is pitching tomorrow, but still I was hoping for two outta' four from the Phillies series, and we didn't get it. Outcome: Loss, 7-8 - LP: Villanueva (0-3) 5/17: @ Phillies - Yovani Gallardo (3-3, 3.57) vs Z Segovia (1-3, 2.91) So it happened. I think it is fair to say that we have reached rock bottom. Gallardo pitched decently again, going seven innings and allowing three runs while striking out eight. Bengie Molina was lost for three or four weeks, and will make a visit to the disabled list. I think you can go ahead and call the implosion now, and what is going to follow will warrant that. Outcome: Loss, 2-4 - LP: Gallardo (3-4) After this game a flurry of moves came. I decided to fire Ned Yost as manager, in hopes of doing something to fire up this team. As interim manager, I hired Larry Bowa, who was not my first choice, but brings some experience and might be able to right the ship here a little bit. To replace him as bench coach, we promoted Leonardo Cabanes from AAA, where he is the pitching coach, to be on the staff. I really think that he has the coaching ability to someday be a manager, as he has the unique ability of being able to handle both veterans and rookies very well. Along with Yost, went pitching coach Mike Maddux, who does teach pitching very well, but just doesn't seem to mesh well with the players. We decided to hire an experienced pitching coach, who has worked in the minors, in 61-year old Henry Hendley. We will revisit the staff later in the season. In more normal moves, we placed Bengie Molina on the 15-day DL and explored options for what to do next. We explored possibly promoting Jeff Mathis, but instead decided on making a big deal that has been talked about between the Pirates GM Dave Littlefield. The deal involves none of our major league level players, and only one of their major league players, and is a 10-player deal. We decided to send 3B prospect Mat Gamel, C Lou Palmisano, SP Dave Johnson, CF prospect Charlie Fermaint, and SP prospect Will Inman (who made a start earlier this year) to Pittsburgh for C prospect Neil Walker, MR Mike Gonzalez, SP Dave Johnston, LF prospect Kyler Burke, and SP Britt Reames. Gonzalez and Walker will report to Milwaukee, while Trevor Hoffman will be designated for assignment, and hopefully report to Nashville. Dave Johnston, is a craft right handed starting pitcher who will report to Brevard County, and another 19-year old Kyler Burke (who may be the prized possession in this deal) will report to Arizona for the rookie season that will start soon. Britt Reames will be in AAA and is insurance for the ML club. I am hoping that Walker can be a case of the third time being the charm in catching prospects, as Mathis and Richardson have both flopped pretty big after being highly touted coming in. Walker is very good defensively. 5/18: vs Twins (25-16/11-7 Hm) - Zach Jackson (3-2, 1.94) vs Yohan Pino (4-3, 3.42) Jackson pitched a complete game shutout, and only allowed two hits and one walk while throwing 105 pitches. Juan Rivera was 2-4 with a run and two RBIs, both coming off a home run. Neil Walker was the only other player with a hit. There were only five hits total between the two teams in this game. Outcome: Win, 2-0 - WP: Jackson (4-1) 5/19: vs Twins - Ben Sheets (3-5) vs Johan Santana (2-4, 3.31) Sheets pitched decently, but had two innings in which he allowed four runs (3 and then 1). Our only run production came from Ben Sheets and that kind of sums up how our offense has been doing lately. He also had two of our teams three hits, the other coming from Walker. Outcome: Loss, 3-4 - LP: Sheets (3-6) 5/20: vs Twins - Steve Hammond (0-0, 1.42) vs Anthony Swarzak (2-2, 3.48) Hammond pitched very well, and we let him go seven innings and allowed only six hits. Geoff Jenkins had a big three run homer that put us ahead in the sixth, and then Juan Rivera hit another home run that drove in two, in the bottom of the eighth. Outcome: Win, 5-0 - WP: Hammond (1-0) Jay's Thoughts: Well it was a pretty tough week as I never enjoy getting swept in a four game set. I have been contemplating the Yost decision probably since the end of April, but I wasn't sure who would replace him, as I am not extremely fond of Bowa. He will be in there for the remainder of the season, and then we will decide what to do from there. I really like Cabanes as a coach, and I think he could be a major league manager someday, possibly even for us. I am going to wait and see what to do with the rest of the staff after I see how we do this season. I am beginning to get worried about last year's MVP, and that is Prince Fielder. He is again under the mendoza line at .196 and just can't seem to figure it out. I think if he continues to struggle this week I might make some sort of change there. Week Seven: May 21-27, 2006
5/21: @ Dodgers (21-23/12-9 Hm) - Carlos Villanueva (0-3, 4.24) vs Tony Sipp (2-4, 4.70)
They got four in the first inning, but then were held scoreless until the eighth where they were able to squeeze out a run to put them ahead. Carlos Villanueva really settled down after the first two innings, and retired 16 straight hitters at one point, until that final inninng where he gave up a run. He was able to last 7.2 innings and gave up eight hits. Outcome: Loss, 4-5 - LP: Villanueva (0-4) 5/22: @ Dodgers - Yovani Gallardo (3-4, 3.60) vs Chad Billingsly (4-3, 3.35) Gallardo did not have his best stuff today, and lasted 6.2 innings allowing four runs, and six hits. Ben Hendrickson was able to come in though after the game had been tied up, and lasted two innings giving up one hit, and striking out two. Vazquez was able to come in and get the save. Rivera continued his big year going 3-5 with four RBIs and two runs, including a home run. Rickie Weeks was 3-5 with two runs, and Aybar was 3-4 with two runs also. Outcome: Win, 8-7 - WP: Hendrickson (1-0), S: Vazquez (7) 5/23: @ Dodgers - Zach Jackson (4-2, 1.65) vs Matt Palmer (2-3, 4.47) Blanton gave up five runs in this game, and Jackson had a bad start, as it seems we are having a bunch of these kind of starts stretched together. I am not quite sure yet, what is going to happen, but these could be Blanton's last days as a part of this roster for us. Weeks and Jenkins both homered in the game and Aybar was 3-4 with a run. Outcome: Loss, 3-10 - LP: Jackson (4-3) 5/24: OFF 5/25: @ Padres (21-26/10-13 Hm) - Ben Sheets (3-6, 4.62) vs Cesar Carrillo (4-3, 2.35) Sheets gave up four runs through seven innings, and after leading 6-0 at one point, they were able to get within two so I brought in Scot Shields in the eighth. Instead of leaving him in there like I should have after he retired the first batter easily, I brought in Mike Gonzalez to face the next three lefties, and he ended up giving up two runs before recording an out, but settled down and pitched to get the win. Corey Hart had a grand slam in the first inning, and Erick Aybar was 4-5 with three RBIs, two runs, and a walk. Juan Rivera was also 3-5 with a run scored, RBI, and walk. Outcome: Win, 9-6 (10) - WP: Gonzalez (1-0), S: Vazquez (8) 5/26: @ Padres - Steve Hammond (1-0, 1.04) vs G Burke (1-3, 3.27) We were able to put up a five spot in the tenth to make this game look like more a of a blowout than it really was. Juan Rivera had a huge day and was 3-6 with two runs, four RBIs, and his 15th home run of the year. Placido Polanco also had a big day going 4-5 with a run and two RBIs. Steve Hammond had another good outing, going six innings and allowing four hits and only one run. Vazquez gave up three runs and got only two outs in the bottom of the ninth, before Hendrickson came on and pitched a perfect 1.1 innings. Outcome: Win, 9-4 (10) - WP: Hendrickson (2-0), BS: Vazquez (2) Following this game we decided that the best idea for Prince and for the team was to option him to AAA for a while to maybe work out the kinks, as his potential is obviously still there. To replace Prince we made another trade. We traded disappointing third basemen Brendan Harris and struggling pitcher Joe Blanton to the Marlins for veteran first basemen Sean Casey, who still has something left in him according to my scouts, closer prospect Jeff Gogal, and RF prospect Kris Harvery, who will report to AAA. 5/27: @ Padres - Carlos Villanueva (0-4, 4.54) vs S Lewis (4-1, 3.08) Villanueva pitched admirably and went a complete game allowing only three hits. Vinny Rottino was 2-4 with a run, and Corey Hart had a run scored that proved to be crucial in the seventh inning. Villy's line for the day was nine innings pitched, only three hits, six strikeouts, and ZERO walks with 106 pitches. He also allowed our bullpen to rest for the day, as they were pretty overworked in the previous two games. Outcome: Win, 2-0 - WP: Villanueva (1-4) SWEEEP!!! Jay's Thoughts: Well, overall a very good week for us I think. If you would have told me that going out west we would go 4-2, I would have called you crazy, but I think that last series was huge for us. Record wise, we are now back to 11 games under, after being 14 under when we fired Yost. Sending down Fielder was very tough for me to do, but his strikeout totals were just insane, and with his potential still relatively high according to my scouts, I didn't want to risk a possible decrease. Casey is signed for 2007 only, and will be working for a contract in his over half a season with us. If he does well enough, I will strongly consider bringing him back. Neil Walker struggled in his first full week in the majors, and could also spend some more time at AAA for sure. He will be demoted when Bengie Molina gets back, if not sooner. We get Tony Gwynn back for next week, so that will allow for me to play Corey Hart at first base and right field when lefties are on the mound, and Jenkins has been sidelined for a few days with an elbow problem, so he will get some time there. With Gwynn back we demoted Ben Watson back to AAA, and Gwynn will now start in Centerfield full time again. June 1, 2007 brings to you...
THE MLB FIRST YEAR PLAYER DRAFT
We draft 15th this year, and have no REAL big need, but I am going to look to draft the best player available and see what we can do there. A catcher is probably the weakest position in our system, although every position can use someone so we shall see. I hope we can get a decent pick out of the 15 spot. I am going to give you the top ten picks again this year. TOP TEN PICKS 1. 1B Shawn Wear - Kansas City SION Potential Ratings: 88/102/127/87/67, 20 yrs old Jay's Scouts Say: 126/111/103/98/55 This guy is going to be a great hitter someday. The tenth rated prospect out of the gates, the Royals decided to take a reach here and probably saw something that a lot of other people did not see in this guy, including the so called "experts". His power is already there, but is going to need to develop some contact skills along with plate discipline. 2. 3B Je Balero - Texas SION Potential Ratings: 94/126/47/57/24, 23 yrs old Jay's Scouts Say: 108/128/80/52/34 While he isn't as great a hitter as Wear is, Balero will be a half-way decent player some day, although he is going to have to develop quickly in order for this pick to turn out for the Rangers. I think this was quite a reach by their team because of his age and where he stands right now. My scouts tell me he will be a little better than what SION says so we shall see. 3. C Jesse Mathis - Seattle SION Potential Ratings: 121/12/114/46/4, 17 yrs old Jay's Scouts Say: 112/24/89/71/36 This is an excellent defensive catcher, who could someday be a very good hitting type catcher also. He is going to strike out quite often, but will also hit for come contact, draw walks, and hit for power (home run at least) as well. If that makes sense. Given Seattle's organizational struggle behind the plate, I don't really have a problem with this pick. I still think there were better players on the board though. 4. SS George Baldwin - San Francisco SION Potential Ratings: 102/86/84/16/89, 21 yrs old Jay's Scouts Say: 126/87/65/19/69 Baldwin is a pretty good all around player, who is a very good defender, can run, can hit for contact, and even has some power in him also. He will mostly be a contact hitter with some pop at the plate, but very well could win some gold gloves in the infield. If SION's experts are right (I never really trust them though) this could end up being one of the best picks in the draft. 5. LF Henry Batcher - Toronto SION Potential Ratings: 123/28/66/61/58, 18 yrs old Jay's Scouts Say: 113/22/96/68/34 Batcher will be a good player some day, but probably has a ways to go before he is ready for the big leagues. He has an excellent outfielder's arm and average speed also. It will be interesting to see what ends up being true about this guy as my guys tell me that he is going to be a phenomonal power hitter. I don't think this is a bad selection at all at this point in the draft, but it will be a while, as I said, before we hear about him. 6. RF Ryan Blyleven - Colorado SION Potential Ratings: 112/86/84/69/24, 17 yrs old Jay's Scouts Say: 102/110/80/49/28 This is a guy that has 40/40 power potential, and if he can live up to his hype some day, he will be another very good pick in this draft. Our guys didn't like him as much as some of the experts did, but his skill hitting talents are very high, even though his plate discipline is not what it could be. It will be some time before he finally reaches the big league level, but when he does and if he does he will be a force to be reckoned with. 7. SP Jim Dinwiddie - Arizona SION Potential Ratings: 75/79/69, 91-93 MPH, 21 yrs old Jay's Scouts Say: 62/74/78 Dinwiddie might have been a bit of a reach here, but the Diamondbacks felt they needed a pitcher badly, and early so they took the risk of grabbing him here. Dinwiddie will be with the club probably by next season, as his ratings are already pretty well developed, although tye do want to work on his control a bit. I think the D'backs were going for someone that was going to help them sooner rather than later here, and Dinwiddie will for sure do that. 8. SS Larry Blaney - Washington SION Potential Ratings: 101/16/75/93/82, 17 yrs old Jay's Scouts Say: 115/24/79/61/46 Blaney could be one of the best hitters in this draft, depending on how his power potential turns out. Even if it isn't what they projected it to be, Blaney has the speed, the discipline, the defensive skills, and the hitting skills to be an excellent top of the order guy in the future. 9. RF Kyuichi Tatsunami - Pittsburgh SION Potential Ratings: 88/128/89/47/17, 18 yrs old Jay's Scouts Say: 102/118/75/50/29 Tatsunami is a true five tool player as he has the defense, the speed, the contact, and the power to be arguably the best player in this draft. He was the first guy on our list, and was also the top rated player the Sports Interactive Online Network. He is probably the least developed player though in this draft, and that definitely hurt his stock with the first eight teams that passed up on him. I'd say Pit made a pretty good pick here at nine. 10. 2B Chri Bals - St. Louis SION Potential Ratings: 123/85/38/50/44, 20 yrs old Jay's Scouts Think: 126/105/27/87/88 Bals is probably going to lead off someday for the Cardinals, and most likely sooner rather than later, as he is pretty well developed alreadyl He has phenomonal speed, and has some gap power and contact in him to be a very good player. He was one of the guys we were hoping would fall to 15, but unfortunately that was not the case. Milwaukee Brewer Draft Picks Round 1: 1B Clement Merchant, 21 yrs old SION Potential Ratings: 107/80/113/67/16 Jay's Scouts Think: 107/99/86/54/31, ***** There were quite a few guys in this spot that we think can be a franchise player someday, and Merchant had what we were looking for and that is good hitting talent all across the line. A bonus is that he is pretty well along the line too and could see Milwaukee sooner rather than later. He isn't he best fielding first baseman, but I think his hitting will make up for that, and we could defnitely use something in that area of the game. Round 2: Rinataro Sakai, 20 yrs old SION Potential Ratings: 101/63/40/52/47 Jay's Scouts Think: 101/83/54/70/39, ***** I decided to take Sakai because of his SION ratings and not because of what our scouts think. Our scouts are high on a number of other guys that the experts say are not every going to amount to much. Sakai is probably going to be more of a lower of the order type hitter, and isn't an exceptional fielder. I'd consider him quite the moneyball type player. Round 3: C Matt Phillips, 21 yrs old SION Potential Ratings: 39/94/42/62/1 Jay's Scouts Think: 101/110/57/60, ***** This may have been a reach here, but according to our lead draft scout Phillips has the potential to be a very good hitting catcher, and he also as an AMAZING arm and talent defensively. The thing that sold us on him is that he is already developed to the point that the experts think he will reach, and if he can perform in the minor leagues, he could be with our team very soon also. We really feel that he was a first round talent and he could surprise quite a few people in the future. Round 4: SS Palb Marquez, 18 yrs old SION Potential Ratings: 54/128/2/59/28 Jay's Scouts Think: 109/112/20/53/54, ***** Marquez is very good defensively and is probably known for that part of his game more than his hitting. He is going to take quite some time to develop, but if he can get to where he has the potential to be, Marquez could be an above average shortstop in the league. He doesn't have the speed that I would hope for from a guy with his ratings, but that defense is very impressive and if everything comes together I think he is a pretty good fourth round pick. Round 5: RF Blanco Ronda, 18 yrs old SION Potential Ratings: 93/60/35/1/24 Jay's Scouts Think: 87/113/59/55/40, ***** Ronda is a very good talent for the fifth round. I really like his arm and defensive ability in the corner outfield spots, and he also has quite a bit of speed. He will also take some time to develop, but if he gets there he is going to have a big impact on the big league team. Round 6: C Willis Mitchum, 21 yrs old SION Potential Ratings: 97/58/46/56/48 Jay's Scouts Think: 89/78/33/30/27, ****1/2 I really want to try to stock our minor leagues with some catchers who could do something in the future for our team, and I think Mitchum has just as good a chance as Phillips does at doing something at the big league level some day. He is very good behind the plate, and the contact is something that is hard to come by at a catcher position. Round 7: 1B Manuel Siaz, 19 yrs old SION Potential Ratings: 82/97/46/11/1 Jay's Scouts Think: 82/91/57/22/24, **** Siaz is a guy that we will probably move along a little bit slower behind Merchant in the minor league system. Surprisingly, he has the most power of any other player in the draft, which was what we looked for with this selection, and he also has a good chance to hit the gaps pretty well. Sort of reminds me of a Lyle Overbay type guy. Round 8: LF Boff Sigarroa, 20 yrs old SION Potential Ratings: 72/118/52/72/1 Jay's Scouts Think: 82/93/51/29/29, **** Sigarroa has a good shot to turn into something for us at some point. I really like the all around talent we've got in him this late in the draft. He has average speed, above average defensively, good contact, good power, he could be an O.K. player someday. His ratings are already developed somewhat and may move along at a good pace. Round 9: CF Toshikasu Ono, 18 yrs old SION Potential Ratings: 103/74/1/19/22 Jay's Scouts Think: 87/67/15/26/28, ***1/2 I like this pick in the ninth round. He is very good small ball type player and has exceptional defense, great speed and contact, and even some gap power in him. He will be moved along slowly through our system as he gets used to Americn baseball. He came from Japan. Round 10: 2B Rick Lynn, 18 yrs old SION Potential Ratings: 66/94/1/16/57 Jay's Scouts Think: 86/88/18/39/33, ***1/2 Lynn has decent defensive skills and average sped and is another guy we like to get in the later rounds. He will also move along a bit more slowly than some of the guys we have drafted earlier in the draft. Here is the rest of the draft: Drafted MR N. Corid in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 12, Pick 15, 345th overall Pick). Drafted MR J. Wentworth in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 13, Pick 15, 375th overall Pick). Drafted LF L. Esquero in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 14, Pick 15, 405th overall Pick). Drafted SS S. Mareno in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 15, Pick 15, 435th overall Pick). Drafted RF H. Richey in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 16, Pick 15, 465th overall Pick). Drafted MR B. Masqua in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 17, Pick 15, 495th overall Pick). Drafted MR G. Chiono in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 18, Pick 15, 525th overall Pick). Drafted SP M. Alvallego in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 19, Pick 15, 555th overall Pick). Drafted MR P. Rodman in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 20, Pick 15, 585th overall Pick). Drafted MR H. Martinez in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 21, Pick 15, 615th overall Pick). Drafted MR K. Inokubo in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 22, Pick 15, 645th overall Pick). Drafted MR Y. Roldan in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 23, Pick 15, 675th overall Pick). Drafted MR E. Carolino in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 24, Pick 15, 705th overall Pick). Drafted MR O. Algaranaz in the 2007 first-year player draft (Round 25, Pick 15, 735th overall Pick).

Week Eight: May 28-June 3, 2006
5/28: vs Braves (28-23/12-12 Rd) - Yovani Gallardo (3-4, 3.78) vs Stephen Russell (3-1, 1.77)
Gallardo pitched VERY well, lasting eight innings, striking out 12 and giving up three earned runs (one of which came as a result of a Derrick Turnbow allowed home run). We could not figure out Russell as he just mowed down our hitters, as he has done all year long. Outcome: Loss, 0-4 - LP: Gallardo (3-5) 5/29: vs Braves - Zach Jackson (4-3, 2.47) vs Tim Hudson (6-1, 1.23) Jackson pitched almost perfect ball today, and allowed only four baserunners through seven innings. Off of RBIs from both Sean Casey, who doubled, and Rickie Weeks, who homered, we were able to muster up enough offense against a gu y who has almost been unhittable all season long, so I am very impressed with the way we were able to pull this one out. Jeff Gogal pitched a perfect eighth with the strikeout in his first appearance of the year. Outcome: Win, 2-0 - WP: Jackson (5-3), S: Vazquez (9) ![]() 5/30: vs Braves - Ben Sheets (3-6, 4.67) vs M Harrison (2-7, 3.92) Sheets pitched well again, going six innings and allowing only two runs to cross the plate while striking out nine. We had a very big day hitting, with Juan Rivera going 2-5 with two doubles, a run, and three RBIs. Corey Hart also drew two walks to score to runs in an 0-3 game. Rickie Weeks was 2-3 with two RBIs, and Vinny Rottino also had two RBIs. In the eight spot Polanco continues to impress, as he was 3-3 with two runs scored and a walk. Outcome: Win, 9-4 - WP: Sheets (4-6) ![]() 5/31: vs Marlins - Steve Hammond (1-0, 1.13) vs Josh Johnson (4-3, 2.33) We had the lead after six innings, but the usually reliable Scot Shields came back down to earth today and gave up four runs to propel them ahead. Placido Polanco was 2-4 with two RBIs and two doubles. Sean Casey and Juan Rivera were also each 2-4 in today's game. Outcome: Loss, 3-7 - LP: Shields (3-1) 6/01: vs Marlins - Carlos Villanueva (1-4, 3.73) vs Jose Garcia (3-6, 5.60) Carlos pitched eight innings and gave up only six hits and two runs. Vazquez pitched a perfect ninth to notch his tenth save since becoming the closer. We trailed 2-1 the whole game, but then got three in the bottom of the eighth and held on to the lead from there. Rickie Weeks was 2-4 with two RBIs, and in his first game back at the big league level Jeff Mathis was 2-4 also. Outcome: Win, 4-2 - WP: Villanueva (2-4); SV: Vazquez (10) ![]() 6/02: vs Marlins - Yovani Gallardo (3-5, 3.74) vs Dan Barone (3-4, 2.67) Gallardo pitched very well, but we again didn't get the lead until the bottom of the eighth so he gained a no decision. He went seven innings, allowed four hits, two runs, and struck out 11 while walking ZIP. Derrick Turnbow, Jeff Gogal, and William Vazquez all pitched very well and were able to to hold the lead close to allow us to come from behind in the bottom of the eighth. Erick Aybar was 2-4 with a run and RBI, Tony Gwynn was 3-4 with a run, Geoff Jenkins was 2-3 with a home run, Juan Rivera was 1-4 with a run and the go-ahead RBI, and Rickie Weeks was 2-4 with a RBI. The bottom of the order didn't do too hot, but as you see the top carried us through this game with 10 of our 11 hits. Outcome: Win, 4-2 - WP: Gogal (1-0), SV: Vazquez (11) ![]() 6/03: vs Marlins - Zach Jackson (5-3, 2.23) vs Chris Volstad (1-6, 4.38) Jackson had another rough outing giving up six runs through five innings. Five of those runs all came in the second inning in which the Royals had two two-RBI singles. Placido Polanco was 3-4 with three runs batted in and a home run. Outcome: Loss, 3-7 - LP: Jackson (5-4) Jay's Thoughts: Well overall it was a pretty good week as we took a series from a good Atlanta ball club and were able to scratch out a split with the Marlins. It would have been nice to take three of four from Florida, but I guess it just didn't work out that way. I am impressed so far with the way we've responded to the changes that took place a few weeks back and our bullpen has been a bit more impressive since changing pitching coaches. We can't seem to gain any ground on the Cubs, as we are still 10 games back, but we have a three game set coming up with the northsiders in this upcoming week. The Nationals and Phillies swapped guys, with the Nationals getting Shane Victorino from the Phillies and the Nationals receiving 3B COry Casto. This was basically just a minor league trade. In a little bit bigger trade, the Braves traded away Roy Oswalt to his third team in two years, the Cleveland Indians. I don't really understand this trade as the Braves only received Eduardo Perez in return, the 37 year old left fielder. Oswalt is 4-4 this year with a 3.91 ERA. My scouts do tell me that Oswalt has really been declining that past few years, and the Braves may have seen that and decided to get something for him while they could. Two NL Central teams have made a trade. The Pirates traded OF Craig Wilson to the Cubs, who were in need of a right handed bat off the bench. In return Joe Crede, who has hit .242 so far this season and seen a stint on the DL, will head to Pittsburgh and man the hot corner for the Pirates. Wilson has not played at the big league level yet this season. AL Player of the Week: RF Manny Ramirez (BOS): 13-25, 5 HR, 12 RBI, .520 AVG, (2x) NL Player of the Week: 1B Travis Ishikawa (SFG): .476 AVG, 3 HR, 5 RBI, (1x)

Week Nine: June 4-10, 2007
6/04: vs Cubs (33-23/15-12 Rd) - Ben Sheets (4-6, 4.54) vs Carlos Zambrano (1-4, 6.28)
Zambrano and Sheets pitched phenomonally in this game and we took a 0-0 game into the bottom of the tenth in which Jeff Mathis, who had a 2-5 day, drove in the winning run on a bases loaded single. Sean Casey was 2-3 with two walks, and Tony Gwynn was 2-5 with a stolen base. Ben Sheets was able to last eight innings allowing five hits, and striking out eight. He walked only one. Outcome: Win, 1-0 (10) - WP: Gogal (2-0) ![]() 6/05: vs Cubs - Steve Hammond (1-0, 1.18) vs Mark Prior (1-5, 5.63) This was definitely not Hammond's best game, as he was only able to last five innings allowing six hits, two runs, walking two, and hitting a guy. He was hit pretty hard even when he got outs, but hey, a win is a win. Ben Hendrickson had a very good outing out of the bullpen. He went three innings, allowing two hits, a run, a walk, and a strikeout. Steve Kline gave up a run in the ninth, which allowed Vazquez to get the last out, and the save. Outcome: Win, 7-4 - WP: Hammond (2-0), SV: Vazquez (12) ![]() 6/06: vs Cubs - Carlos Villanueva (2-4, 3.53) vs Juan Mateo (8-2, 1.85) They jumped out to a 6-2 lead, and we didn't get anywhere close from there on. We had the bases loaded in the eighth, but the third out was at home plate, and killed that rally. Erick Aybar had a big day going 4-5 with a RBI and a stolen base to go along with that. Rickie Weeks also had a decent day going 1-3 with two runs and two walks. We had 11 hits as a team, but left 10 guys on base, which will always hurt. Two out of three from the division leaders is just fine by me, and we have now won or tied five of our last six series since the firing of Ned Yost. Outcome: Loss, 4-7 - LP: Villanueva 6/07: OFF On the off day we decided to designate Steve Kline for assignment, as we have probably our best relief option out of the bullpen at the AAA level, in Rick Steik. My scouts have told me that he has been ready for a while now and could come in and be a huge part of our bullpen at this time. At some point he could become our setup guy, and then very likely will be our closer in the future with Vazquez moving to setup and Gogal as our seventh inning guy. I think these three can serve as the building block to a very good bullpen in the next few years. Hendrickson will always be right there also. Right now he will be the seventh inning guy, and Scot Shields will be the guy to call on any earlier than that or in a close game. 6/08: @ Rangers (32-29/17-13 Hm) - Yovani Gallardo (3-5, 3.64) vs Jason Jennings (3-4, 4.71) This was a tough loss for us as we had battled back from 5-0 and were leading 7-5 going into the eighth when errors killed us. The third error of the game also led to the game winning run being walked in by Scot Shields, who had pitched two very fine innings already and was getting tired. This was a rough one to lost, but I think we can win the next two with Jackson and Sheets going. Gallardo had one bad inning, giving up five runs, but settled down the rest of the game and was in line for the win. Outcome: Loss, 7-8 (11) - LP: Shields (3-2) Before the June 9 game we activated Bengie Molina off the DL and he will come off the bench to rest Mathis every once in a while, as Jeff has done alright since returning to the big league level. 6/09: @ Rangers - Zach Jackson (5-4, 2.78) vs Thomas Diamond(3-2, 1.91) Well this was another tough one to lose as we led again in the bottom of the eighth, but Vazquez blew a save and let them tie it up, and they won the game on a three run home run from Jason Botts. We only had eight hits as a team, and Jeff Mathis had a good day with two doubles in five at bats with a run and RBI. Outcome: Loss, 4-7 (12) - LP: Turnbow (0-4) 6/10: @ Rangers - Ben Sheets (4-6, 4.10) vs Zachary Phillips (4-2, 5.20) We decided to give Vazquez the day off because of the heavy load he has had this week, and we were leading 5-1 going into the bottom of the ninth so I decided to ride it out with Gonzalez pitching. Ben Sheets was huge today, as we were short on bullpen arms. He was able to go 7.2 innings allowing only four hits and one run while striking out five. Vinny Rottino was 2-4 with a run and two RBIs, and Corey Hart was 2-4 with a run and two RBIs. Rottino had a home run. Outcome: Win, 5-2 - WP: Sheets (5-6) ![]() Jay's Thoughts: I am fine with a 3-3 week, although a series win in Texas would have been great (especially considering we should have won both of the first two games). I am becoming quite content with the young guys I have on this team, especially the pitching. There may be still a few spots for improvement (not going to say any names quite yet), but I think we've got those replacements in the minors. I am really impressed with the way Sheets has stepped it up as we move along in the season, and if we want to get back to .500 like I want to, he needs to pitch like he has been lately. Although I haven't been able to really express my thoughts lately (with all the special reports) I am really pleased with the way this year's draft went, and we really loaded up on hitting prospects, something we're lacking. In Gwynn, Rivera, and Weeks I think we have three guys for sure that we can use as building blocks, and if Fielder ever gets it together he will be a part of that also. Man, that Cubs team must be really lucky. They're in first place, but if every team in the division played to their Pythagorean records, they would be in last. I guess it helps to go 19-8 in 1 run games...

Week 10: June 11-17, 2007
6/11: OFF
6/12: @ Tigers (31-33/14-16 Hm) - Steve Hammond (2-0, 1.47) vs Justin Verlander (7-4, 2.97) Wierd. Very weird. This was a two run game in the top of the ninth. Then we scored ten runs to make it 14-2. That is crazy. If I gave you all the happenings (player wise) of how we scored, this would take forever, so I think it is fair to point out Juan Rivera who was 3-5 with a single, double, and triple and four RBIs. Geoff Jenkins also was 3-5 with a run and two RBIs. Everyone played very well, but those were the two biggest. Hammond lasted seven innings allowing two runs, seven hits, and one walk. We didn't have any home runs in that inning, or the game. Outcome: Win, 14-3 - WP: Hammond (3-0) 6/13: @ Tigers - Carlos Villanueva (2-5, 3.73) vs Humberto Sanchez (5-3, 2.31) Villanueva struggled in his final inning, giving up three runs in the sixth. He gave up 11 hits total, and stranded quite a few guys, but his stuff hasn't been as on as it has in the past. Erick Aybar was 2-4 with the go-ahead three run home run in the eighth inning to put us up 7-4. Vinny Rottino was also 3-5 while Gwynn was 2-4 with two runs, two RBIs, a walk, and two stolen bases. Outcome: Win, 7-5 - WP: Shields (4-2); Sv: Vazquez (13) We decided to let Derrick Turnbow go, as John Honaker, my scout, told me that Robert Hinton was really improving in AAA and was ready to come back to the major league bullpen and give it another go. Hinton will just serve middle relief right now, but if he pitches well enough he could find some important innings sooner or later, we shall see. 6/14: @ Tigers - Yovani Gallardo (3-5, 3.67) vs Ramon Garcia (2-7, 5.30) Gallardo is in a bit of a funk lately and nothing seems to be really going his way. We had three hits total as a team, and through six he had only given up two runs, but we just couldn't figure out a way to hit the guy with a five something ERA. He lasted seven innings, which helped rest our bullpen a little, and had three key double plays go in his favor which stranded quite a few players. We just couldn't figure out Garcia. Outcome: Loss, 0-3 - LP: Gallardo (3-6) 6/15: @ Twins (38-27/19-16) - Zach Jackson (5-4, 2.90) vs Kevin Slowery (6-3, 2.04) We again could not hit the ball as Jackson lasted six innings allowing seven hits, one run, and striking out six. We only had seven hits as a team and Ben Hendrickson pitched two innings out of the pen to keep the big guys rested for when they actually are needed of use. Outcome: Loss, 1-2 - LP: Hendrickson (2-1) 6/16: @ Twins - Ben Sheets (5-6, 3.86) vs Yohan Pino (7-5, 3.87) Sheets didn't have his best stuff today, as Sheets gave up four runs through six, and we continued to struggle hitting wise. We had 12 hits, but could not get guys in once they got on, and only one of them went for extra bases. Outcome: Loss, 0-6 - LP: Sheets (5-7) 6/17: @ Twins - Steve Hammond (3-0, 1.62) vs Matt Garza (9-2, 1.95) Well sheesh, I don't know where that one came from. I had a bad feeling about facing the AL's arguably best pitcher, but I guess it wasn't called for as we were able to bust out 14 hits today. Rickie Weeks was 2-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Tony Gwynn had a big day going 2-4 with two runs, a RBI, and a walk. He also had his 37th stolen base. Hammond went five innings allowing four runs (three earned), walking one and striking out four. Outcome: Win, 9-5 - WP: Hammond (4-0) Jay's Thoughts: Another 3-3 week, which is fine by me when we are facing the AL's best team for a three game set. It'd be nice to string together a few winning streaks here though, to get closer to .500, which is our goal right now. I still feel like I am missing a pitcher that is just unstoppable, a Mat Garza if you will. I hope that Gallardo might be able to turn into that, but so far he has been average and hasn't shown that yet. Hammond has a chance to be something like that, but he isn't as dominating as what an ace should be. I have been exploring a few trades, but nothing serious. I hope Gallardo can get it together and turn into that because he has all the stuff according to my scouts, and is still very young. Team Stats Record: 30-40 (3-3) GB: 10.5 of Cubs in Central; 9.5 of Mets in Wild Card Batting Average: .254 - 6th in NL ERA: 4.45 - 16th in NL Top Ten Prospects according to Head Scout 1. 1B Clement Merchant: I really like this guy and think that he could help us in the future. Most likely will be on the fast track. 2. 3B Evan Longoria: He also will be in Milwaukee soon (possibly beginning of next season), and has the ability to be a very good hitting third basemen. 3. C Neil Walker: He is probably a defense first, hit second type of catcher, but don't be fooled as he has very good hitting ability, and I am hoping he will be our catcher of the future. 4. LF Kyler Burke: He has a lot of speed and power according to some of my scouts, and will probably be on the slow track up but could be a good outfielder some day for us. 5. 2B Rick Lynn: Was the 10th round pick of this year's draft and has very good contact potential and good defense, and he will also be on the slower track to the bigs. 6. SS Adam Heether: He is a bit closer to the big league level than a lot of the guys, but with Aybar I am not sure whether he will get a chance with us, but could be a good trade bait. 7. MR Robert Hinton: A lot of our scouts are saying that he could be a very good reliever in the big leagues, and I am banking on that assumption being true. 8. SP Joba Chamberlain: All of my scouts tell me he is ready for the big leagues at this current time, but I am waiting off to see how he does at AA and then he might see a few starts at AAA before he finds his way up here. 9. SP Tim Dillard: According to Honaker he is going to be very good someday, but all of the other scouts say its only going to be more of a back end of the rotation type guy if that. 10. SP Yovani Gallardo: Like said earlier, Gallardo has the potential to be that ace that we are lacking right now, as we have just a bunch of middle rotation starters right now. Yeah I have a hope that they might be able to stick closer to their Pythagorean record the rest of the season and allow us to cut that lead down a bit. We need to worry about getting to .500 first though.

Week Eleven: June 18-24
6/18: vs Giants (40-30/23-14 Rd) - Carlos Villanueva (2-5, 3.95) vs Matt Cain (5-5, 3.60)
Well, we again hit very well against a pretty good pitcher. A bunch of guys had big days, and Sean Casey was 4-5 with three RBIs and a home run. The two guys that didn't get hits, Geoff Jenkins and Jeff Mathis, had five walks combined (2 and 3). Carlos Villanueva was even 2-3 with a run and RBI. Pitching wise he was able to go seven innings allowing three runs and NO walks. Outcome: Win, 15-3 - WP: Villanueva (3-5) 6/19: vs Giants - Yovani Gallardo (3-6, 3.68) vs Jesse Floyd (3-2, 3.49) Well we again hit the ball pretty well to get another win, and even more important another series win. Gallardo was nasty out there today going six innings and striking out ten, while allowing only two runs. Rickie Weeks had a huge day going 2-4 with two home runs and three RBIs. Juan Rivera also had his 18th home run of the year going 1-4 with two RBIs. Outcome: Win, 6-3 - WP: Gallardo (4-6), SV: Vazquez (14) 6/20: vs Giants - Zach Jackson (5-4, 2.81) vs Noah Lowry (6-6, 2.62) Another win for us, and it is great to see our hitting finally come around. Corey Hart and Rickie Weeks both homered. Hart was 3-5 with three RBIs and two runs and a stolen base. Weeks was 2-3 with two RBIs. Tony Gwynn stayed hot going 2-5 with a run and a stolen base, and Jeff Mathis also stayed hot going 2-4 with a RBI. Jackson pitched 6.2 innings allwoing one run and two walks, while striking out five. Outcome: Win, 8-2 - WP: Jackson (6-4) SWEEEP!!! 6/21: OFF We made a small minor league trade of prospects that could turn into something pretty big someday. We traded away prospect Kennard Jones, a centerfielder, and a middle relief guy in Single A to the Cubs for two AAA starting pitchers who have a very good shot to be halfway decent one day. Mark Holliman didn't get as good as an analysis from Head Scout John Honaker, but another scout who has just as good ratings as Honaker thinks he could be very good at some point for us. He is 23 and will probably spend the rest of this year in AAA. Sean Gallagher, 21, was the other guy we got, could end up better than Holliman, and according to one of our pitching scouts, is pretty fully developed at this point in his career. He will also be at AAA for the current time. 6/22: vs Royals (30-44/17-18 Rd) - Ben Sheets (5-7, 4.03) vs Kyle Christ(2-5, 4.34) We left ten guys on base and Ben Sheets did not give up any earned runs and only allowed two hits, while striking out six. Juan Rivera had a good day going 2-4 with a RBI and run scored, and Tony Gwynn was 2-3 with a RBI and a walk. Outcome: Loss, 2-3 - LP: Sheets (5-8) 6/23: vs Royals - Steve Hammond (4-0, 1.96) vs J.P. Howell (1-6, 5.27) We did have ten hits, but lately we haven't been able to drive the guys that get on base into score, and it was a struggle again tonight. We are playing a team with pitching that is probably worse than ours, and we have only managed five runs off them this far. Tony Gwynn was 2-5 with a RBI, and Jeff Mathis was 2-4 with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth. Steve Hammond pitched very well going six innings, allowing four hits, one run, and no walks. He was in line for the win, but we allowed a run after he left which tied the game back up. Outcome: Win, 3-2 - WP: Shields (5-2); SV: Vazquez (15) ![]() 6/24: vs Royals - Carlos Villanueva (3-5, 3.94) vs Brad Lincoln (3-5, 3.45) A six run fourth inning is what seperated us in this one, and we got down 7-0 and could not recover. Villanueva continued with his struggles, and I am starting to wonder if we have a better option in AAA or even possibly AA somewhere. The bullpen did very well, lasting five innings, allowing three hits, and striking out nine. Hendrickson went four innings and Gonzalez pitched a scoreless ninth to keep us in the game. Outcome: Loss, 4-7 - LP: Villanueva (3-6) Jay's Thoughts: Well it was nice to have a winning week finally, but I think it would have been a little better if we could have managed a series win against one of the AL's worst. We have also gained a little bit more ground on the teams ahead of us, but still that series loss against the Royals hurt. We have 13 games left until the all-star break and it would be great to get AT LEAST seven from those 13 games. That set of games also includes a three game set in Chicago, which could be important. Villanueva is starting to make me wonder whether or not he has the stuff to pitch in the big leagues, especially when we've got guys in the minors that would be probably be able to pitch just as well as he has. I may have to explore that sometime soon. Week Twelve: June 25-July 1, 2007
6/25: vs Astros (32-43/10-30 Rd) - Yovani Gallardo (4-6, 3.64) vs Chad Reineke (2-5, 4.99)
Jeff Gogal had a tough game today, giving up three runs in an inning of relief after Gallardo gave up only six hits and struck out 12 through seven innings. Chone Figgins had a big day giving Weeks a day off, and was 2-3 with a two RBI triple and a sac fly. Outcome: Win, 5-3 - WP: Gallardo (5-6); SV: Vazquez (16) ![]() 6/26: vs Astros - Zach Jackson (6-4, 2.71) vs Juan Gutierrez (3-5, 4.41) Zach Jackson pitched very well again, and was able to go seven innings allowing only three hits and walking one. He also struck out nine batters. Rickie Weeks won the game with a double in the ninth and Erick Aybar came into score the game winning run. Sean Casey had his third home run since joining the team, and Juan Rivera had a quietly productive day going 3-4 with a walk. Outcome: Win, 3-2 - WP: Vazquez (1-2), BS: (4) ![]() 6/27: vs Astros - Ben Sheets (5-8, 3.76) vs Mitch Talbot (6-4, 4.17) We have gotten some excellent pitching lately, and this series was just another example of both the bullpen and starting pitcher working very well together. Juan Rivera had another home run, and Placid Polanco was 2-4 with a RBI. No one had an especially huge day, but the offense was pretty well spread out and consisted of three walks and eight hits. Ben Sheets lasted seven innings striking out eight and allowing eight hits. Outcome: Win, 5-0 - WP: Sheets (6-8) SWEEP!!! 6/28: OFF 6/29: @ Cubs (45-33/24-14 Hm) - Steve Hammond (4-0, 1.92) vs Chris Shaver (5-0, 2.97) We had a three run lead going into the bottom of the eighth, and came out of the inning down four runs and out of the game. Steve Hammond pitched beautifully going six innings allowing two hits, walking three, and giving up one run. He also struck out nine. This is a tough one that we should have won, but instead we are now back to 9.5 games back of the Cubs. Outcome: Loss, 3-7 - LP: Shields (5-3) 6/30: @ Cubs - Carlos Villanueva (3-6, 4.54) vs Juan Mateo (10-3, 2.25) Juan Rivera had another big day going 3-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Erick Aybar also had a good day going 3-5 with a run, and Chone Figgins was 2-5 with a run, which allowed Tony Gwynn to rest. Carlos Villanueva went six innings allowing six hits, one run, and one walk. The bullpen, after a rough day on Friday, went three innings allowing one baserunner. A big blow for the Cubs is losing Juan Mateo to a strained tricep muscle, sidlining me for four weeks. Outcome: Win, 3-1 - WP: Villanueva (4-6); SV: Vazquez (17) 7/1: @ Cubs - Yovani Gallardo (5-6, 3.41) vs Brandon Webb (9-5, 2.32) Our hitting is proving to be very inconsistent this season so far, and I am not sure why that is. We are hitting the ball, but when the pitcher goes to the stretch, we just can't seem to hit the ball. Gallardo did not allow any hits after a rough first inning, where he walked two and gave up two hits. He did allow six walks however. He lasted eight innings (a complete game), but again it didn't seem that we could support him with runs, so he was tagged for a loss. Outcome: Loss, 0-3 - LP: Gallardo (5-7) Jay's Thoughts: The sweep was a very good for us, but that first game really hurts in blowing the lead we had over the guys that are so far ahead of us. 8.5 games back is a lot better than 9.5 games back. Its good to see we have the heart of our rotation going next series against the struggling Pirates, and then we will end the first half of the season going to the nation's capital to play a weekend series agains the Nationals. Juan Rivera and Tony Gwynn were our two all-stars this year, and much deservedly so. Team Stats Record: 38-44 (4-2) GB: 9.5 of Cubs in Central; 9 of Mets in Wild Card Batting Average: .258 - 4th in NL ERA: 4.18 - 14th in NL I am going to give the rest of a normal weekly report in the following monthly report, which will be up in less than five minutes.

I was wrong this game's 2007 schedule is a little different than the real life 2007 schedule and the All-Star game is coming a week sooner than it is in real life. All the necessary All-Star Break updates will follow, as a result.

Week Thirteen Pt. I: July 2-4, 2007 brings you...
THE ALL-STAR UPDATE
We made another trade on the first day of the all-star break, and got a guy that could be with this team for quite a while and be a big force in the lineup. We decided to trade away one of our top pitching prospects, Tim Dillard, and Gary Majewski, who has proven very disappointing, to the Colorado Rockies for right fielder Brad Hawpe, and 22-year old LF prospect Cole Garner. So far this season, Hawpe has hit 10 home runs, driven in 38 RBIs, and hit with a .782 OPS. Last season he hit 30 home runs while driving in 107 RBIs, hitting .303 and sporting a .920 on base percentage. He will now start in right field in place of Geoff Jenkins, who will get the occasional start, and bat fourth in the order in between Juan Rivera and Rickie Weeks. A weird turn of events...
I am writing this in totally different circumstances than any other entry I've made since being in Milwaukee. Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig announced today that last fall, when they agreed to a new contract between the Players Association and the owners, the decided to wait on a couple of announcements for this year's All-Star Week. These new developments will be implimented starting this off-season.
The first agreement is the trading of draft picks between teams. The owners all voted and decided that it made sense because there weren't really any negatives out of the agreement. A few owners, from what I understand, thought it went against what traditional baseball is all about, but the unaminous choice among the league was to allow it to happen. I am very excited about this because for teams like us, we will be able to get more opportunities at getting the right player in the draft, and a small market team like the Brewers need that. The second agreement is going to take place starting next season, and is a little bit bigger impact on the game of baseball. The owners decided to make the divisional series, traditionally a five-game set, a seven-game series starting with the 2008 playoffs. I really don't have an opinion on this decision, although it will make it tougher for the underdog teams to win the series, but I am sure it's going to have little effect on the outcome of the World Series.

Week Thirteen Pt II: July 5-8, 2007
7/05: @ Pirates (31-52/16-25 Hm) - Zach Jackson (6-4, 2.53) vs Wardell Starling (4-7, 2.95)
Well we picked up right where we left off, and that is stranding runners on the four white things. Jackson pitched very well, but we again could not capitalize on key opportunities to score runs and take a lead, which lead to our loss. In order to get back to .500 we need to beat teams like the Pirates, and right now after losing five of six so far this season, we have not done that. Outcome: Loss, 1-2 - LP: Jackson (6-5) 7/06: @ Pirates - Ben Sheets (6-8, 3.52) vs Josh Shortslef (6-8, 3.51) We came out with the bats a little more today, and a key guy who is going to need to heat up in Rickie Weeks, was 1-3 with two RBIs and a double. Brad Hawpe also had a good day going 2-4 with a RBI, and Tony Gwynn had a two RBI single in the top of the ninth. Sheets was able to last 7.1 innings, allowing seven hits, two runs, and two walks. The bullpen then was able to close out the game in very good fashion. Outcome: Win, 5-2 - WP: Sheets (7-8); SV: Vazquez (18) 7/07: @ Pirates - Steve Hammond (4-0, 1.88) vs Jeremy Jeffress (0-3, 5.00) Hammond pitched excellent today, going six innings, giving up three hits and a walk, and striking out a career high 11 batters. Shields, Steik, Gogal, and Vazquez all pitched well out of the bullpen to hold what was a 1-0 lead until the top of the ninth came around. Erick Aybar was 3-5 with a run and three RBI. He had a double and a home run in a big day at the plate. Outcome: Win, 3-0 - WP: Hammond (5-0); SV: Vazquez (19) 7/08: @ Pirates - Carlos Villanueva (4-6, 4.32) vs Dave Johnson (1-5, 7.39) Villanueva really struggled again, and I might have just lost my patience with him. We could have easily won this game with good pitching, but his stuggles continued and I am strongly considering making a move to get him to the pen for a bit as a mop up guy. We had 12 hits, but again stll left 11 guys on base which just isn't going to cut it in attempt to get back to .500. Outcome: Loss, 4-10 - LP: Vlilanueva (4-7) Jay's Thoughts: I am going to explore some options, so that the last game can be Villanueva's final game started as a Brewer, at least for this year. I haven't gained much ground in the Wild Card or Division, and actually lost ground to the Cubs in the division. I am really beginning to like what Hammond is turning into, and if he can develop some more endurance he could be a great compliment to Gallardo for years to come. I am basically set with my team for the rest of the year, and I think that we can really do a lot with this team in the future as they will all be together for quite a while. I am hoping that we can get as close to .500 as possible, and I will be able to retain my job. Week Fourteen: July 9-15, 2007
Before the game we decided to option Carlos Villanueva to AAA for a bit and gave top pitching prospect Joba Chamberlain a shot at starting some in the big leagues. If all goes well he could be up for the rest of the year, but it all depends on how things turn out, as there is another option in AAA that could be in our rotation right now, and that is Sean Gallagher.
7/09: @ Nationals (38-48/19-24 Hm) - Yovani Gallardo (5-7, 3.40) vs Doug Waechter (3-8, 5.60) Gallardo did very well today, lasting eight innings, allowing two runs, and only one walk. Erick Aybar had another huge day going 3-4 with a home run, a double, and four RBIs. Tony Gwynn was 2-5 with two runs and a RBI. Brad Hawpe is doing his job in front of Rivera, getting on three out of four plate appearances with two walks and a hit in two at bats. Outcome: Win, 5-2 - WP: Gallardo (6-7); SV: Vazquez (20) ![]() 7/10: @ Nationals - Zach Jackson (6-5, 2.55) vs Justin Neimann (6-5, 4.06) We're not going to talk about this one. Outcome: Loss, 0-12 - LP: Jackson (6-6) 7/11: @ Nationals - Ben Sheets (7-8, 3.45) vs Mike Hinckley (3-8, 3.73) Sheets pitched well, but not as good as he has in the past. He gave up two runs in six innings, but walked two and gave up eight hits. Erick Aybar continues to just rip the ball, as he had yet another double going 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Brad Hawpe was 2-4 with a home run and a walk, and Juan Rivera hit a three-run home run. Vinny Rottino was also 2-4 with a RBI in the eight hole. Outcome: Win, 7-3 - WP: Sheets (8-8); SV: Shields (1) It appears we had some weird scheduling here, as we have another four day period in which no games are played. I think what happened is that the person that made this roster set messed up the scheduling with the all-star game, but didn't go back and change it so it all got messed up. Anyways, again I am just going to include a full, regular report with next week's report because there is just nothing really to report at this time. I will give you a team stats update, but that is all for this week, and next week will be the full standing report along with all of the extra stuff that is present in a regular report. Sorry about tha guys! Team Stats Record: 42-47 (2-1) GB: 10.5 of Cubs in Central; 8.5 of Cardinals in Wild Card Batting Average: .257 - 4th in NL ERA: 4.17 - 15th in NL

Week Fifteen: July 16-22, 2007
7/16: vs Rockies (39-49/18-25 Rd) - Steve Hammond (5-0, 1.73) vs Clay Kershaw (1-1, 5.04)
Hammond struggled with command tonight, and had 99 pitches through five, so we had to take him out. He only gave up two runs in those five innings, and struck out seven, but we did not want to risk another inning out there. The bullpen did great, going four innings allowing only two hits and striking out five. Placido Polanco came on as a pinch hitter in a 2-1 game in the sixth, where we were trailing and had the bases loaded with two outs. Rottino for some reason doesn't hit lefties well, so I decided to have Polanco pinch hit, and he cleared the bases with a double. He ended up 2-2 with a run and four RBIs coming off the bench. Outcome: Win, 9-2 - WP: Gonzalez (2-0) 7/17: vs Rockies - Joba Chamberlain (1st start) vs J Hampson (4-6, 4.28) Chamberlain struggled in his first start out there, allowing four runs in five innings pitched. I am not too worried about him yet, and the 21-year old will get plenty of more chances to impress at this level. Rickie Weeks homered for the 12th time this year, and was 2-4 with three RBIs and a run. Jeff Mathis had one RBI and was 1-4. Outcome: Loss, 4-9 - LP: Chamberlain (0-1) 7/18: vs Rockies - Yovani Gallardo (6-7, 3.33) vs Matt Holliman (1-0, 1.08) Gallardo pitched well enough for the win, but did not have his best stuff today and gave up four runs in seven innings. Sean Casey had a huge day hitting, going 4-4 with a run and three RBIs. He had a three run home run early on in the game. Juan Rivera was 2-4 with a two-run home run, and also had two runs on the ady. Erick Aybar scored twice and was 1-3 on the day. Outcome: Win, 7-5 - WP: Gallardo (7-7); SV: Vazquez (21) 7/19: vs Diamondbacks (49-44/22-24 Rd) - Zach Jackson (6-6, 3.15) vs Gregory Smith (5-5, 4.56) Jackson pitched very well, but we could not hit the ball worth a lick today and the breaks stopped going our way in the tenth when they got three. Jackson lasted seven innings allowing two runs, one earned, five hits, and one walk. Weeks and Rivera homered back to back in the second, and that was all our offense for the day. Outcome: Loss, 2-5 (10) - LP: Hinton (0-1) 7/20: vs Diamondbacks - Ben Sheets (8-8, 3.43) vs Garrett Mock (3-6, 5.77) Sheets pitched very well, well enough to get the win, but Vazquez gave up a home run and blew his fifth save of the season. Sheets lasted eight innings giving up seven hits, two runs, and NO walks. Erick Aybar was 2-4 with a home run, and Brad Hawpe also hit a home run and was 2-4 with two RBIs. Rickie Weeks ended up 3-4 with two runs, and Tony Gwynn was also 2-4 with a run. Outcome: Win, 5-4 - WP: Vazquez (2-2); BS: (5) 7/21: vs Diamondbacks - Steve Hammond (5-0, 1.85) vs A Miller (7-5, 3.72) It's games like these that I just can't stomach. We had a 8-5 lead in the top of the ninth and Vazquez gave up a grand slam. He has really been struggling out of the closer's role, and I am beginning to wonder whether or not he should make a move to a more natural role as a set-up guy. Hammond pitched another very good game, going six innings allowing only three runs, five hits, and no walks. Juan Rivera was 4-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Tony Gwynn was 3-5 also with a run and two RBIs. Outcome: Loss, 8-9 - LP: Vazquez (2-3); BS: (6) 7/22: vs Diamondbacks - Joba Chamberlain (0-1, 7.20) vs Enrique Gonzalez (7-5, 4.11) Chamberlain will probably go to the bullpen for a bit, as he had another struggle surrendering four runs in six innings. Today the timely hitting was a problem again, and for some reason it seems like we just can't win the games. We've got a lot of talent, but it just doesn't seem like we know how to win, and losing three out of four that you probably could have won three hurts tremendously. Outcome: Losss, 4-5 (13) - LP: Hinton (0-2) Jay's Thoughts: Not even managing a split with the D'backs really hurts because we coul dhave easily had three out of four in that series instead of just one. As I have already said, Vazquez is going to be making a move to the setup role vs righties, and Gogal will stay in the setup role versus lefties, while Shields will come in in the seventh most of the time. We have been very inconsistent hitting wise, but one guy that I really am excited about is Erick Aybar as it seems that his power may finally be coming around. Chamberlain had some struggles early on as a starter, but that was expected for a young guy. I am going to give him a few opportunities, and if the struggles continue, he will probably go to AAA for a little while and we will call someone else up.
