SATURDAY DECEMBER 4
GUELPH 5 OWEN SOUND 4

Our first two game winning streak since the opening weekend of the season! It was not exactly how I drew it up and in the final seconds we were just praying we would hold on but the Storm escaped Owen Sound with 2 points.

Despite the score we did play a strong defensive system. Doug Groenestege was just awful in net for us but fortunately Owen Sound goalie Mike Brown was even worse. Owen Sound came very close to tying things up in the final minute with the goalie pulled for an extra attacker as they got us running around in our end. Twice in the final minute the Attack beat Groenestege only to see the puck rattle off the goalpost. (The post was one of our best players as 4 Owen Sound shots in the game hit the iron). We did hang on in the end and that is all that mattered.

Virtually all of our forwards received a rating of 8 including Ryan Callahan and Shane Baxter, who each scored twice. Enforcer Kelsey Wilson had the other goal for us - his first of the season. Defensive fill-ins Stach and Caruso both played well as did Haviland and Ryan Pottruff on the blueline. Pottruff was exhausted by games end and I had to sit him down in the final 2 minutes but fortunately Caruso was up to the task of replacing him when I cut the bench down to two lines and 4 D. Card and Bottiglia only had average games but that may have been more a result of me reigning them in (Bottiglia was set to tight defense after we took the lead in the second period).

In other action Saturday Peterborough beat Oshawa 3-1 as Jordan Staal and Jamie Tardif each had a goal and an assist for the Eastern Conference's best team.

Corey Perry had 4 points as London hammered Kitchener 8-2. Michael Blunden scored twice to lift hometown Erie to a 5-5 tie with Windsor and defenseman Jason Swift scored a pair of goals in Sault Ste Marie's 4-1 win over St Mike's.

We are off Sunday and I will give my entire team except for the Black Aces (black aces is a name given to extra players who do not play regularly because in practice they generally wore the black practice jerseys) but there is a full slate of games tomorrow. I will have an OHL standings update after Sunday's games. I will also update the NHL and other junior leagues during the coming week.

GUELPH SCOUTING
The two new scouts I went after both agreed to contracts with the organization. Each signed a 2 year deal at $5,000 per season. Rob Lynch is a 55 year old originally from Alberta and he is rated as a 12 (out of 20) on judging player ability and 13 on judging potential. I have sent him to Europe for a month to come up with a list of candidates for next year's CHL import draft.

Michel Turner is a 47 year old who hails from Quebec City. He is rated 13 in both ability and potential. He will spend the next month assessing talent for May's OHL draft.

If so put your best heading DC on that side. You could play a little wider as well. Don't go overboard though if you are happy with the way your team is performing as it is.

Also consider marking their attacking midfielder with your defensive midfielder as he could be their go-to guy. Check his stats, see what he has been doing and what he is capable of. That leaves you with a DC free to mark another player coming from midfield.
Thanks for the advice. I will see how it pans out when I play the game tomorrow. Much appreciated.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 4
PATRICK 3 ST MIRREN 1

MG's tactic suggestion worked quite well, for the first half anyway. We played a very strong half of football, particularily DR David Van Zanten, who was playing for the injured Mark Lindsey. Our defense bottled up their strikers and goalie Craig Hinchcliffe was not tested at all in the first half.

With our new emphasis on defense we did not generate much offense either, until in the 45th minute when striker Stewart Kean found a seam in their defense to give us the lead.

Patrick tied the game in the 54th minute on a seemingly innocent throw-in. A quick high pass into the box was headed past a helpless Hinchcliffe by Patrick's Spanish striker Juan Alberto Ramon Escales, who outjumped Van Zanten for the ball.

Van Zanten got into trouble on the second Patrick goal just over a minute later when he let Ramon Escales get away from him. Ramon Eascales siezed the opportunity and drifted a cross to Jamie Mitchell, who had shedded the marking of Kirk Broadfoot. Mitchell quickly placed the ball in the left side of the cage past Hinchcliffe.

We went to an all out offensive attack after that and while we had some chances we failed to capitalize. Patrick added a late goal while we got caught pressing to make the final 3-1.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 5
We are off until tomorrow when we play a rare Monday night game at St Michael's. In OHL action yesterday Plymouth moved a little further ahead of us with a 4-3 win at home over Belleville. John Mitchell had 2 goals and an assist to lead the Whalers who have moved up to 7th in the Western Conference leapfrogging Kitchener.

The Rangers lost 5-2 to Mississauga as Minnesota Wild draft pick Patrick O'Sullivan had a hat trick for the Ice Dogs. Kitchener is just 3 points ahead of us and we have a game in hand.

Barrie continues to struggle as the Colts lost their 3rd straight, falling 4-3 on home ice to Sudbury. In Oshawa, Ben Eager had two goals and an assist to help the Generals beat Brampton 4-2 while Kingston and Saginaw skated to a 3-3 tie.

Our game tomorrow with St Michael's is one we should have a solid chance at winning. The Majors are last in the Eastern Conference and are winless in their last 8.

Lineup changes - Taylor will be back in net for tonight's game after Groenestege's terrible showing in Saturday's win. Defenseman Parent is still tired so I am going to give him another game off rather than risk injury. My defense will be unchanged from Saturday. Likewise, no changes up front so the forwards stay the same. St Mike's is no where near as strong as Owen Sound was so I will open things up a little more than we did on Saturday.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 5 - ST MIRREN RESERVES
Our reserve squad had a game with the Dumbarton Reserves and despite dominating the play we came away 2-1 losers. We had twice as many good scoring opportunities but no one could finish. Only 17 year old striker Scott Gemmill stood out for our side. He had several close calls including a shot that hit the post plus he made a nifty pass to David McKenna for our only goal. Their goalkeeper, John Wright, was named Man of the Match and with good reason. He made 9 saves off of us.

After 10 games our Reserves sit second in the 10 team Reserves Group 3 league. The Reserves will next see action December 29th against Clyde. For McKenna, the goal was his 4th of the season and ties him for second in league scoring.

Our U19 squad will take the pitch on Wednesday for a game against Airdrie United. We are 5-2-2 in the U19 League while Airdrie has yet to post a victory in 9 games.

AROUND THE SOCCER WORLD

SCOTTISH PREMIER LEAGUE
Rangers beat Dundee United 2-0 to keep manager Alex McLeish's job safe. Celtic continues to hold a huge league in the standings with 13 wins and 2 ties in their 15 matches. Their 41 points are 13 clear of Dunfermline.

ENGLISH PREMIER DIVISION
Everton surprised front-running Chelsea 3-0 on Saturday to tighten the table. Chelsea leads with 39 points which is 6 more than Arsenal and Liverpool. Arsenal's Thierry Henry continues to lead the scoring parade with 13 goals, 4 more than Ruud van Nistelrooy of Manchester United.

FRENCH FIRST LEAGUE
Lyon's lead is down to one point after they lost 2-0 to Bordeaux on Saturday while second plice Lille beat Istres 3-1.

GERMAN FIRST DIVISION
FC Bayern beat Wolfsburg 3-1 Saturday to remain 7 points ahead of VfB Stuttgart with Dortmund 8 points off the pace.

ITALIAN SERIE A
No change atop the table as Juventus, Inter and Milan all posted victories over the weekend. Juventus leads the way with 33 points, 2 ahead of Inter and 3 up on Milan.

PORTUGUESE SUPERLEAGUE
Defending league champion Porto fell a point out of first place after losing 2-1 to Leiria on Saturday while rival Boavista beat Penafiel 2-1. Boavista now leads after 13 matches.

SPANISH FIRST DIVISION
6 teams are within 3 points of league leader Betis after 13 games. Betis had little trouble earning 3 points in a 5-0 win over league doormat Albacete Saturday.

This coming week is another busy one for the top club teams as the Champions Cup completes stage play Tuesday and Wednesday to narrow the field down to 16 teams and the First Knockout Round. Inter, Barcelona, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Valencia, Paris, Milan and Shakhtar have already qualified for the round of 16.

MONDAY DECEMBER 6
ST MICHAEL'S 4 GUELPH 1

A terrible effort on our part against a team we should have beaten. We just came out flat and failed to put any sort of offense together. On the few decent chances we had their goaltender, Justin Peters. came up big. Most of our forwards received average or below average ratings with only our goal scorer Pat Ouellette, Darryl Smith and Daniel Paille getting rated an 8 for the game. Our defense did not play badly - 2 of the 4 goals against were power play markers - but Danny Taylor was just average in net for us.

SCORING SUMMARY
FIRST PERIOD
StM R Wilson 7 (McIver, J. Donati) 4:05

SECOND PERIOD
StM McIver 5 (J. Donati, R.Wilson) 1:01 PP

THIRD PERIOD
StM J.Donati 8 (Boyce, McIver) 1:58 PP
GUE Ouellette 5 (Smith, Card) 15:19
StM Boyce 4 (R. Wilson, McIver) 15:45

We are off until Friday when we begin a 3 game weekend that starts with a visit to Sarnia followed by a Saturday night game in Peterborough and concluding at home Sunday against St Michael's.

I am still debating what to focus on with practice this week. It is very frustrating that we can play as well as we did Saturday in Owen Sound and then turn around and stink the joint out against one of the worst teams in the league.

In Monday's other game Owen Sound beat Windsor 3-2 on an overtime goal by Robin Big Snake.

TUESDAY DECEMBER 7
We focus on our offensive skills in practice today. Meanwhile there were 2 OHL games on the schedule. In Kingston, Crezh import Radek Smolenak scored both goals, including the winner 41 seconds into the overtime period to give the Frontenacs a 2-1 win over Barrie. In Ottawa, the hometown 67's rallied from a 2-0 first period deficiet to beat Sarnia 5-3.

On the practice front we decide to increase or penalty killing work today as well as focus on offensive skills for the forwards and defensive skills for our rearguards.

THURSDAY DECEMBER 9
KNOCKOUT ROUND FIELD SET FOR CHAMPIONS CUP

The final 16 have been decided in the battle for the Champions Cup. 4 English Premier League clubs are through: Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. The lone Scottish club to advance was Celtic. The other 11 teams included 4 Italian sides (Roma, Inter, Juventus and Milan), 3 from Spain's First Division (Barcelona, Deportiva and Valencia), Germany's FC Bayern, FC Kobenhavn of Denmark, Ukraine team Shakhtar and Paris from the French First Division.

The draw for the first knockout round matchups will take place next Friday.

Our U19 squad had little trouble beating Airdrie United's U19 team 3-1. Daniel McColgan was tremendous in net and earned a rating of 9 and man of the match honours. I felt Airdrie played a very chippy game and we had 4 of the lads injured in the contest. Striker Craig Marr, who scored one of the goals, and midfielder Craig Molloy were the most seriously hurt. Each will be sidelined 2 weeks.

SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP
Three of the 4 quarterfinal matches in the Scottish League Cup were contested yesterday. Rangers beat Motherwell 1-0, Hibs blanked Livingston 3-0 and Aberdeen topped Dunfermline 3-1. In two weeks time Celtic will play Hearts in the last remaining quarterfinal.

PRACTICE
Because I am still learning a lot of the soccer terminology and stategy I have decided to leave my assistant coach in charge of practice. With no budget available to sign transfer players and apparently no loans allowed midseason - at least I cant seem to find a way to get a player loaned to me - I am left with just game planning at this time. However, that in itself is more than enough to keep me busy at this stage.

FRIDAY DECEMBER 10
Love the media interaction emails you get.

With the table extremely tight at the top their is plenty of verbal jockeying going on in our division. Patrick boss Dick Campbell calls his game with Clyde this week a 'make it or break contest' that will put the loser behind the 8-ball in the chase for the division title. Clyde's boss fired back his side is ready and looking for a victory. At the other end of the table, Hamilton manager Allan Maitland is feeling the pressure as his side tries to avoid relegation. The head of the club's board did not come right out and say it but his comments made it clear that relegation would cost Maitland his job.

I decide to get in on the act by mentioning to the BBC that the pressure really is on Ian Scott to try and get the results to avoid relegation for his club. We play Scott's team, Queen of the South tomorrow and they presently sit 5 points ahead of us.

INTERCONTINENTAL CUP
Not exactly sure what it is but it must be important since I was notified it will be contested today. Looks to me like it could be a game between the South American club champion and the European Cup winner. This one pits Porto of Spain, last seasons Champions Cup winner against a team from Columbia called Once Caldas.

The game was played in Yokohoma, Japan and Porto prevailed on penalty kicks. It finished 1-1 before Porto scored on their first 3 penalty kicks while Once Caldas missed all three.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 11 :PREMATCH
Ian Scott decided not to respond to my comment but things are getting heated in the press between Hamilton and Airdrie United. Airdrie United's player-coach Sandy Stewart said he felt Hamilton was as good as relegated and Hamilton boss Allan Maitland, who's job is on the line, came back with a guarantee that he would win today.

QUEEN OF THE SOUTH 2 ST MIRREN 1
Everything that could go wrong did in the first half as our best defender Kirk Broadfoot left with an injury 15 minutes into the game and we were down to 10 men after Hugh Murray got a red card at the 29 minute mark. Queen of the South scored twice right after Murray was removed and that would hold up as the difference.

We took the play to them in the second half in an all-out attack. We were rewarded with some great chances the best being Alan Muir getting stopped on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute. With everyone except for the keeper pulled way up Muir did manage to score in the 89th minute but despite a couple of close calls in the closing seconds we could not get the equalizer.

After the game we learded that Broadfoot will miss about two weeks with strained ankle ligaments. Well, I guess it could have been much worse. We will also be with Hugh Murray for our next game as his red card drew an automatic one match suspension. The good news is DR Mike Lindsay is just about completely recovered from the dislocated jaw he suffered last month. He should have a clean bill of health for next week.

Ouch ... tough loss indeed. I don't know the game and how interviews and press releases influence the players performances but I would have though you took the pressure off your team with your remarks and then an injury and a red card? Wow ... they must have played very dedicated.

Btw great thread. I always wanted to give FM a shot but never got to it.

Good luck

thanks. I had hoped to put some pressure on their team with the comments but apparently it did not help...although it was more bad luck that cost me the game.

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 8
The Guelph Storm are off today as we continue to prepare for a 3 game weekend. I am busy with some trade talks involving defenseman Mick Okrzesik. The 19 year old defenseman from Pittsburgh has not been able to crack my line-up, playing just 3 games this season and having an average rating of 6.75. He had played 117 games for the Storm over the past two seasons but had just 6 points and really did not seem to involve himself physically in the game. Barrie had offered me a 4th round pick for him and I countered with a marginal prospect instead. I am waiting on their response.

There were 3 games tonight as Barrie blanked Sudbury 2-0, Mike Montgoemery's first two goals of the season helped Peterborough past Saginaw 4-3 while in Owen Sound Bobby Ryan had 3 points as the Attack blasted Erie 7-2.

THURSDAY DECEMBER 9
We put a little more emphasis on special teams in our final day of practice before 3 games in 3 nights. On the ice Sarnia rallied with 3 third period goals to beat the Rangers 3-2 in Kitchener. Two other contests saw Mississauga shade Brampton 5-4 while Saginaw blanked Ottawa 3-0.

FRIDAY DECEMBER 10
GUELPH 3 at SARNIA 3

Goaltending let down both sides as we settle for a 3-3 tie against the Sting in Sarnia. Danny Taylor let a soft one beat him for the tying goal while Sarnia started backup Mike Iafrate and he was just awful. We are certainly happy to take a point from the Sting in their building had Paolo Bottiglia not hit the post on a shot from the point in overtime we could have escaped with a much-needed second point.

SCORING SUMMARY
FIRST PERIOD
GUE Callahan 10 (Paille, Bottiglia) 8:51 PP

SECOND PERIOD
GUE Gurtler 7 (Stach) 4:12
SAR Painchaud 2 (Restoule, Antonation) 9:06
SAR Olimb 7 (DeVries, Musselman) 16:09
GUE Bottiglia 8 (Smith) 18:40

THIRD PERIOD
SAR Versteeg-Lytwyn 5 (Painchaud, DeVries) 1:11

In other action Saginaw won for the second straight night, beating Kingston 3-2 on a goal by Jack Combs with less than a minute remaining in regulation. Peterborough held off Erie 4-3 despite a strong 3-point night from the Otters Michael Blunden.

London suffered just it's third loss of the season, falling 4-3 at home against Owen Sound. Brampton beat St Michael's 3-1, Belleville doubled Oshawa 4-2 while Kitchener beat Sault Ste Marie by the same 4-2 count.

In Windsor the Spitfires lost 5-3 to cross-border rival Plymouth. Finallyu in Sudbury, new pick up Jhase Sniderman - the ex-Erie goalie - had the shutout as the Wolves blanked Barrie 3-0.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 11
GUELPH 0 at PETERBOROUGH 4

The schedule makers did not do us any favours. After a Friday night game in Sarnia we headed the opposite direction for a game Saturday night against the Petes. We fought nicely for two periods but ran out of steam in the third as the Petes put the game away with 3 goals. Doug Groenestege started in net and played pretty well.

SCORING SUMMARY
FIRST PERIOD
PET Reddox 13 (Ryder, Tardif) 8:41 PP

SECOND PERIOD
no scoring

THIRD PERIOD
PET Beljo 9 (Kaleta) 0:15
PET Evans 3 (Cowie, Soryal) 2:00
PET Tardif 16 (Raftis, Young) 18:33

In other action Ottawa blasted Oshawa 5-1, Windsor doubled Kitchener 4-2 and Mississauga pounded Plymouth 8-3 behind a 5 point night from John Hecimovic.

Tomorrow we wrap up the 3 game weekend with a contest at home against St Michael's.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 12
ST MICHAEL'S 3 at GUELPH 3

Another game where we really should have had two points but for some reason the Majors just give us fits. Daniel Pallie had a huge game scoring all 3 goals for us with his linemates Ryan Callahan and Tyler Doig assisting on all three. Each of them earned a rating of 10 for their efforts. Unfortunately no one else on my side got higher than a 7.

SCORING SUMMARY
FIRST PERIOD
StM Mironovic 1 (Haskins, Lehman) 2:55 PP
GUE Paille 13 (Doig, Callahan) 11:06 PP
GUE Paille 14 (Doig, Callahan) 13:38 PP

SECOND PERIOD
StM J. Donati 9 (Boyce) 0:50
StM R. Wilson 8 (McIver, J.Donati) 6:18 PP

THIRD PERIOD
GUE Paille 15 (Doig, Callahan) 4:51

In other action Ryan Munce and the Sarnia Sting shutout Sudbury 3-0. London made up for a loss in their last game big time by hammering Windsor 9-1. Defenemen Mike Gauthier and Bryan Rodney led the Knights with 3 points each. In Brampton, defenseman Michael Vernace scored in overtime to lift the Battalion to a 3-2 win over Barrie.

Third period power play goals from Derek Merlini and Michael Blunden lifted Erie past Owen Sound 5-4. Cory Emmerton had a goal and an assist as Kingston beat Belleville 3-1. Oshawa and Saginaw skated to a 3-3 tie while Mississauga doubled Sault Ste Marie 4-2

There are 2 games on the OHL slate for tonight as Saginaw entertains Owen Sound while Erie visits Sault Ste Marie.

MONDAY DECEMBER 13
London continues to be the number 1 ranked team in the Canadian Hockey League with another OHL club, the Peterborough Petes still sitting in second. Rounding out the top 5 are Kelowna and Moose Jaw from the Western League followed by the Mississauga Ice Dogs.

In today's games Saginaw and Owen Sound played to a 3-3 tie while Jeff Carter had a goal and an assist to help the Soo past Erie 4-3.

We spent today at practice focusing on tactics. Tuesday will be a conditioning day while Wednesday and Thursday the focus will be on offensive and defensive skills.

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 15
After a couple of counter-offers both ways we finally agree to a trade with Barrie that will send seldom used defenseman Mick Okrzeslik to the Colts in exchange for Barrie's 4th round pick in the 2005 OHL draft. The 19 year old Okrzeslik had no future with the organization.

According to media reports there is unrest in the St. Michael's camp. Forward Cory Vitarelli blames his and the team's poor play on club general manager Charlie Bartlett. The 19 year old winger says he expects one of them to leave the team before too long. Vitarelli had 29 goals and 47 points in 66 games a year ago. He has just 3 goals and 7 assists in 24 games this season.

MORE INJURIES FOR ST MIRREN

We certainly could not afford our latest injury. 18 year old Graham McWilliam, who filled in solidly for the injured Kirk Broadfoot on Saturday, will be sidelined for 2 weeks with a groin strain suffered in practice today. Because of the injuries I will likely be forced to start 16 year old Mark McAusland, who has no experience beyond the youth team, on Saturday.

FRIDAY DECEMBER 17
DRAW SET FOR CHAMPIONS CUP KNOCKOUT PHASE

Here are the matchups for the First Knockout Round in the Champions Cup. Game 1 in the home and home set will be held on February 23rd.

Arsenal vs FC Kobenhavn
Chelsea vs Roma
FC Bayern vs Barcelona
Juventus vs Inter
Liverpool vs Celtic
Manchester United vs Shakhtar
Paris vs Milan
Valencia vs Deportivo

The EURO CUP is down to 32 teams including Rangers who will meet German squad Wolfsburg in the first knockout round with games set for February 17th and 24th. Rangers were the only Scottish side to advance.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 18
We enter our game at Ross County in a very difficult spot. Injuries have cost us two defensive centers and a suspension will leave us without one of our best playmakers. Despite that the final score was....

ST MIRREN 3 at ROSS COUNTY 2
We pulled out the victory thanks to a tremendous game from goalie Craig Hinchcliffe and midfielder Alan Muir. Hinchcliffe faced 18 Ross County shots and twice made saves on an opposing player breakaway. Muir scored the game winner in the 84th minute and his outstanding run set up Allan Russell's goal. Both Muir and Hinchcliffe were givena rating of 9 for the game.

Stewart Kean also scored for us and he, along with defenders Kevin McGowne and Laurie Ellis, earned a rating of 8 for their efforts. Ross County sent everyone up in the closing minutes and there was some frantic action in front of our net but we managed to withstand the pressure and escape with 3 points.

The 3 points allowed us to inch closer to avoiding relegation. The bottom two teams will be dropped to the Second Division at seasons end. We are 6 points behind the 8th place squad, Queen of the South, which earned a single point in a tie with Airdrie United.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 19
FALKIRK MANAGER'S JOB IN JEOPARDY

Despite a 1-0 win over Raith the Falkirk board has given player-coach John Hughes an ultimatium. Rumour is a bad showing against Hamilton next week will result in Hughes dismissal. One thing I have noticed is that Hughes is one of the more vocal managers and has been popping off about other managers all season. I decide to throw my two cents worth in and comment to a local scribe that I am not the biggest fan of John Hughes and it wouldn't bother me in the least to see Falkirk underachieve this season.

Rangers boss Alex McLeish is again on the hot seat but he relieves some pressure with a 2-1 win over Hearts that moves his side into second place in the Scottish Premier League. They still have their work cut out for them if McLeish's side is aiming for a title. Rangers trails first place Celtic by 14 points.

Things have tightened up in the English Premier League after Manchester United played Chelsea to a 3-3 draw. Chelsea's lead on second place Liverpool shrinks to a single point after the Reds beat Middlesbrough on the road 1-0. Arsenal, Newcastle and Fulham round out the top 5. ManU sits 7th in the table, 11 points back of Chelsea.

TUESDAY DECEMBER 21
Darren Young and Laurie Ellis were both named to the Scottish First Division Team of the Week. However, goalkeeper Craig Hinchcliffe was ignored in favour of Patrick's Kenny Arthur. Like Hinchcliffe, Arthur earned a rating of 9 for his efforts in a 1-1 draw with Hamilton. It was Young's second time this season being named to the team of the week while Ellis gets the honour for the first time.

Meanwhile, Raith is rumoured to be close to a deal to improve their defense. Greg Shields, a center defender from Dunfermline, is close to a transfer that would send him to Raith. The 28 year old has spent most of the season with the Dunfermline reserves but did make 3 appearances with the big club.

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 22
SCOTTISH CUP CONTINUES

I am not sure of the difference between the League Cup and the Scottish Cup but the latter resumes play today with a bunch of Division 2 and 3 teams in action and some that are not listed as being in any division. It is just the second round of the event so I assume we will enter it in the next stage or two as my guess is higher division teams get a bye in the early rounds.

In LEAGUE CUP play Celtic hammered Hearts 4-1 to advance to the semi-finals. The semi's will pit Aberdeen against Hibs while Celtic takes on Rangers. Dates are tba.

THURSDAY DECEMBER 23
We do indeed enter the Scottish Cup in the third round as the draw was held today. I get a nice break when St Mirren draws Second Division club Morton as our opponent. The games will be played on the 15th of January. Some other teams were not as lucky such as Airdrie United which drew Celtic and third division club Stirling which has the daunting task of playing Rangers.

As for our opponent, Morton is presently tied for first in the Scottish Second Division. They look to have a decent team, particularily their strikers, and could give us some trouble.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 26
MERRY CHRISTMAS. FALKIRK FIRES HUGHES

They did not even wait to give him a chance to win today's game. It was announced early this morning that John Hughes and Falkirk haver parted ways. Among those in the running to replace him include Gus MacPherson, the man who's job I took at St Mirren.

Meanwhile, my board has injected another $440,000 in cash into the club. I am unsure as of yet if that means I am able to use some of it to acquire a player by transfer. It appears the answer is no as when I look at our team's finances it shows us with a negative balance of $350,000. Looks like that money is just to keep us afloat. I will have to spend some time reading the finance section of the manual.

AIRDRIE UNITED 1 at ST MIRREN 2
Another amazing game from both goaltender Craig Hinchcliffe and attacking midfielder Alan Muir. Hinchcliffe made some huge saves to earn an 8 while Muir scored one goal and his free kick set up the second from Stewart Kean. Airdrie broke our shutout with a goal in extra time but we never allowed them a chance at the equalizer.

16 year old Mark McAusland, playing just his second game, earned a rating of 8 and made several key tackles.

Let us know if you figure it out and want to write about it. This part of the game (along with many others, esp. tactics) still kind of baffles me.

In the meantime, good stuff!!

FRIDAY DECEMBER 17
GUELPH 2 at BELLEVILLE 4

A dissappointing result as we fall 4-2 to the Bulls. Since so many of my players seem to be getting ratings of 7 or 8 I again have to blame the loss on my goaltending. Danny Taylor faced 29 shots but was rated just a 6 or average for the game.

Daniel Paille had one of our goals. The overager now has 4 goals in the last 2 games and remains in the top ten in the league scoring race.

SCORING SUMMARY

SATURDAY DECEMBER 18
GUELPH 4 at SAGINAW 2

We get a decent game out of Doug Groenestege in net and win over Saginaw 4-2. The line of Pat Ouellette, Darryl Smith and Shane Baxter led the way combining for 3 goals and 6 assists. Daniel Paille also scores for us and he has 5 goals in 3 games.

TUESDAY DECEMBER 21
We will play our final game before Christmas tonight at home against Sudbury. We enter the game tied with Kitchener for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference and 5 points behind 7th place Plymouth. We have one game in hand on the Rangers and 2 on the Whalers.

CALLAHAN OFF TO WORLD JUNIORS
We received notice today that Team USA has selected forward Ryan Callahan to play in the World Junior Championships. While we will miss his presence on the big line, it certainly is a good experience for the 19 year old Rochester, New York native. To take his place on the roster we called up winger Kyle Paige from the Jr B Guelph Dominators. The 16 year old Paige has 24 goals and 43 points in 27 games this season. The Richmond Hill, Ontario native was our 8th round pick in last June's draft.

Joining Callahan on the US junior roster are a number of OHLers including Peterborough defenseman Aaron Dawson, Kitchener defenseman Matt Lashoff and winger Patrick Davis, Plymouth winger John Vigilante, forwards Danny Fritsche and Robbie Schremp from London, center Patrick O'Sullivan of Mississauga and Owen Sound winger Bobby Ryan.

The Canadian team will be well represented by the Ontario Hockey League: Goaltender Ryan Munce of Sarnia, defenemen Paul Bissonette from Owen Sound and Danny Syvret of London along with forwards Dylan Hunter and Corey Perry of the London Knights, Wojtek Wolski from Brampton, Jeff Carter of Sault Ste Marie and Kingston's Anthony Stewart.

The tournament begins December 27th.

I decide to work my team hard today and tomorrow before giving them 4 days off at Christmas. Practice will resume on Monday.

Here are the standings at the Christmas Break.

Forgot to post the results of the Dec 21 game at home to Sudbury. It was one well worth remembering as we tamed the Wolves 5-1. Ryan Callahan, still celebrating his addition to team USA for the World Junior tournament, led the way with 2 goals and an assist while goaltender Doug Groenestege enjoyed his best showing of the season. Daniel Paille had another strong game, getting a goal and 2 assists. Paille now has 6 goals in the last 4 games.

Sorry TigerFan for the interruption, you may have already worked out the answers but if not...

The difference between a League Cup and the FA Cup (Scottish Cup) is that in the League Cup only teams that are in the Football League are eligible to compete - in Scotland Premier League to Third Division, and as there is no promotion/relegation between D3 and non-league IRL the same 42 teams compete every year. The Scottish FA Cup is open to any team (although not strictly true IRL), league or non-league, with non-league clubs competing in a qualifying competition to enter the main draw.

I will have to spend some time reading the finance section of the manual...
Yeah it's only to keep the club afloat, as the game does not allow clubs to go bankrupt, probably due to the knock-on effect it would have with other divisions. The only money you can spend is what is available in the transfer budget, irrespective of what money the club may or may not have.

I had not worked out the answers so your help is much appreciated. 2 follow up questions on the Cups if you dont mind.

What is the more prestigious title League Cup or Scottish Cup? Or are they both about equal.

and do they tie into the Euro Cup? Is that how teams are selected for the European titles by winning either a league or Cup in their own country?
