1998-99 Offseason News and Notes

The top pick in this seasons draft is clearly the best player on the board, and it isn't really close. Albert Pujols is the newest member of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He's very raw, and probably needs 3-4 years of seasoning in the minors, but if he develops, baseball will have a super star. Ben Sheets going #2 is a bit of a head scratcher. I like Barry Zito, who went second in round 2 better.

The Hall of Fame gets a new member this season. George Brett, going in as a member of the Indians is the lone inductee.

Brett received 96.6 percent of votes in his first year of eligibility. Brett played for Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit and Pittsburgh. His career average of .310 was 5 points better then his real life career average of .305.

The big name in free agency is Gary Sheffield. It was a good time to knock in 180 RBI's. He will be sought after. Other then Sheffield, the field as a bunch of above average player that will probably get a massive over payment.

Sheffield returns to St. Louis for less then i expected. Montreal gets a great deal with Curt Schilling, and for some reason, Herbert Perry hasn't been signed. Perry is only 29. Look at his last 5 seasons. Someone is about to get a great short term deal with him.

Here are the trades made during the offseason

I meant to include another edition of my century celebration during the offseason, and just plain forgot to include it, so i'll put it here.

I always liked Ben Sheets. He was a really underrated pitcher and I was delighted when he decided to come back with the Braves a few years ago.

That top 5 and 8 are very deep. Nelson Cruz and Ludwick at 12 and 13 are good picks as well. Honestly, this is one of the deepest drafts I can remember.

Holy Herbert Perry! I know you won't, but don't forget to update us on where he goes and how he does.

Strong AL Central players!

I have a suggestion. I was thinking that whenever you finish this dynasty, you should write a retrospective on the "new history" of Major League baseball. You can reflect on all those great players, teams etc. you have been following. Also, you could also divide it up into eras for easier reading.

What do you think?

As long as it doesn't feel like work, then i could probably do that. Still a ways to go though. I'm slower then i was at the start of this thing. More teams, less time, but it's getting there!

1999 MLB Regular Season

Here are the top prospects for the 1999 season

Herbert Perry signs a 1 year deal, worth 2.7 million, with the Texas Rangers. A huge steal, and big upgrade to their defense.

I haven’t taken a look at money and spending in a long time. Here are each teams payrolls for the 1999 season.

The Cubs lead the way spending almost 67 million. The Atlanta Braves have baseball’s 2 highest paid players. Jim Thome and Pedro Martinez, making 21 million combined. Those two make more than Arizona and Toronto!!

For comparison, here are the real world 1999 payrolls.

34 year old Doc Gooden has just won his 300th career game. The 10 time Rube Waddell award winner is now 36th in MLB history in wins. Can he get to 400? Looks very possible, but he’s starting to get up there in age. Makes Jiro Noguchi’s 442 wins seem amazing that Gooden is still 142 away from there.

Javy Lopez leads baseball in all-star voting with 3.5 million. Tate Seefried and his 38 pre all-star break home runs is 2nd with 3.4 million. BTW, its not lost on me that Gehrig, Killebrew, Suttles, Ruth, and now Siegfried are all Phillies!! Philadelphia, home of the home run!

Lot of trading this season. Here are the pre All-star game trades.

Damn, Tate Seefried hits 9 more July home runs to raise his total to 47. 2 months remain. The chase to Lou Gehrig’s 65 is officially on!

It’s been an injury filled season for Mike Piazza. He fractured his finger in spring training, and missed 3 months. After returning for a month, and putting up Mike Piazza type numbers, this happened. Ouch.

Piazza finishes the season with 25 games played, 6 HRs, 20 RBIs, and a .298 average.

Here are the post All-star game trades.

September will be a record watch month. Tate Seefried has 53 home runs, only 12 off the record, and Javy Lopez is hitting .395. Noone has hit over .400 since Lou Gehrig in hit .425 in 1929. That happens to be the same year he hit 65 home runs. So, September of 1999 is chasing 1925. 96 year old Lou Gehrig will be watching(he’s still alive in my reality) Will history happen?!

Oh ya, playoff watch. The Yankees, Angels, Phillies, Cards, and Astros are safe. There are about 6 six teams fighting for 3 more playoff spots in both leads, but my focus is elsewhere!

A week into September, Javy Lopez has dropped to .389, while Tate Seefried hits just 1 homer. History shifting back to Lou Gehrig’s corner.

Through 16 September games, Javy Lopez is hitting .250, which has dropped his average to .380. His dream of hitting 400 is all but dead. Tate Seefried has hit 3 home runs in the month, by far his worst month of the season, and is nine off Gehrig’s record. I will now proclaim that Lou Gehrig has won this round!! Both of his records are now safe for another year!!

The final weekend of the season sees just one playoff race, and it’s the AL wildcard. My Toronto Blue Jays have had a wonderful year, and hold a 1 game lead on the Orioles for the final post season birth. The Jays are visiting Cleveland for 4, while Baltimore is hosting AL east champ NY for 1, then finishing up against the Red Sox.

AL WILDCARD PLAY IN GAME

The Orioles score 3 early runs, then watch as pitcher Masumi Kawata shut down the Jays offense. Toronto loads the bases in the 8th, but come away with nothing. The Orioles advance to the playoffs with a 3-1 win.

Javy Lopez ends up hitting .373, which is enough for the AL batting title, but trails Lance Berkman, who eclipses the .380 mark, the highest average in 65 years.

Tate Seefried hits 61 home runs, the 8th man to hit over 60. BTW, I totally forgot Todd Greene hit 65 home runs last season, to tie Gehrig. I guess in my mind, until you beat Gehrig, he holds the record!

Herbert Perry hits .282, with 21 homers, and 99 RBIs. It’s a bit off his normal production, but still at a all-star level, and a fantastic bargain for the Rangers.

How's Puckett been and what caused the Yanks to trade him?

Other interesting moves: Rockies getting Giambi(!!!!), Rueben Sierra to Camden Yards and White Sox getting Luis Gonzalez. Fernando Rodney gets traded twice.

Kevin Millar: All-Star.

Dibble returns to New York!!!

Wow, Lou Gehrig once again has to deal with these contenders for his records. Berkman!!!

Yanks make it once again! Dbacks 112 losses is rough. AL East starting to become very competitive.

It's amazing Toronto could have that season with that payroll. Would have been interesting had they won the play-in game to see what could have happened.

I'm concerned about it being a fluke, but next season will tell us if they are indeed a rising team.

Kirby is 39 now. He's been a life long Yankee, and developed into a super platoon player over the last few years. Here's a look at his ratings and stats.

Todd Hundley wasn't playing in Houston. They had 1998 all-star Damian Miller at catcher. Hundley immediately became the Yankees starting catcher, and hit 21 homers over 95 games. It was a pretty smart deal by the Yanks.

Before Hundley, the Yankees used Tom Pagnozzi at catcher. He was decent, but his ratings were falling off a cliff, and probably is on the verge of retirement.

These are two teams that are about to reach unfamiliar territory.

Baltimore hasn’t won a World Series since 1960, making it and losing 4 times in the past 39 years. This squad lost in 1997 to the Cubbies.

The Orioles are not a good offensive team. They don’t hit a lot of home runs, they don’t cash in a good percentage of base runners. What they do well is pitch. The bullpen WAS excellent. Unfortunately, closer Takahito Momura, who has 34 saves and a 2.19 era is out after elbow surgery. They are also missing top MR Chuck McElroy, who posted a 2.61 era in 76 innings. Those are two huge pieces that can’t be replaced.

Amazingly, this is the city of San Francisco’s second trip to the Fall Classic. The Giants last played in the 1975 World Series, a loss to the Yankees. Before that, the NY Giants won back to back series in 51 and 52. Those teams featured Dick Wilson, Phil Rizzuto and Ralph Branca!

The Giants rotation is terrible. SP Melido Perez is injured, leaving the reaming starters extremely thin. Only Mike Mussina has an era under 5.90! Sean Casey and Tony Batista are a fearsome middle of the order pair, that need to play big to overcome the weak rotation. Ivan Rodriguez is also a guy to watch. Batting at the bottom of the order, he’s capable of doing some big things.

A 39 year, or 47 year drought is about to end!!
