Charley Pride
Charley Pride, P/OF, is shown in the uniform of the Memphis Red Sox. This is, of course, the same Charley Pride who became the country music singer.

Charles Earle
Charles "Frank" Earle, OF/P, is shown in the uniform of the Brooklyn Royal Giants. A head & shoulders shot of this same photo was posted of Earle on this same forum back in June, 2010, but this shows a more expansive view of his Royal Giants uniform.

Perry Hall
Perry Hall was a pitcher, third baseman, and outfielder for eight Negro League teams during the 1921-37 period. He is shown on the left at a celebration by the Milwaukee Brewers honoring Negro League players in 1992. The photo on the right was taken from a celebration at Comiskey Park, also in 1992, honoring Negro League players. Perry Hall was among those honored, but the photo caption did not specify who was in the picture other than a general statement of Negro Leaguer honorees lined up for the ceremony. It seems to me that it is the same man who is portrayed on the left.

"Harvey" Young
Norman Harvey Young was a shortstop who played for the Baltimore Elite Giants, Cleveland Buckeyes, and New York Black Yankees during the 1941-44 period. James Riley's Encyclopedia also mentions that he played with the independent Atlanta Black Crackers in 1943. He is shown here in the uniform of the 1943 Atlanta Black Crackers.

John H. Harden
John H. Harden was the owner of the Atlanta Black Crackers in 1938. This photo is from a film clip of the Atlanta Black Crackers in that year, and he is the only one wearing a tie in that clip. Though he is not identified in the dialogue which accompanies the film, I think it must be John Harden. He also was an owner of the Indianapolis ABC's and an officer with the New York Black Yankees. He served as treasurer of the Negro Southern League.

Tommy Harris
Tommy Harris, C, is shown in a Cleveland Buckeyes uniform. This is another excerpt from a film clip. There's no doubt here that the player is identified correctly. The caption accompanying the film clip indicates that it is Tommy Harris running out of the dugout near the end of the film, and it gives his uniform number, which I verified by viewing the film several times.

Marshall Smith
Marshall "Dark Night" Smith, P, is shown in the uniform of the Homestead Grays. A word of caution about this photo -- The photo caption only says "Smith." The team photo is merely dated "mid-twenties," so the exact year is not specified. Because Scrappy Brown is in the team photo, and for some other reasons, I deduce that it must be from 1923 or 1924. There were no Smith's on the Grays' roster in 1923. In 1924, there were two -- H. Smith and Marshall Smith. But H. Smith didn't start the year with the Grays; he began the year with the Washington Potomacs. Marshall Smith started earlier, and didn't end the year with the Grays. I tend to think that this was early in the year. Catcher William H. "Wise" Johnson, who is also in the team photo, wasn't with the Grays in 1924, though he was with them in 1923. That's why I think it was early, and why I think this Smith had to be Marshall.

John W. Hayes
John W. Hayes was a shortstop and second baseman with the Philadelphia Stars and St. Louis Stars in 1940. The attached image of him is an item which was for sale on eBay and described as a Helmar Brewing padlock. It can be seen in the image that he is identified as John Hayes, Philadelphia Stars.

"Bugs" Hayman
"Bugs" Hayman, 1B/OF, is shown in the uniform of the Philadelphia Giants. In the registers produced by James Riley and Dick Clark/Larry Lester, the formal name of this player is presented as Charles Hayman. His playing time with the Giants was 1909-1916. But there is a conflict on the name. In his blog on Negro League history, Gary Ashwill refers to this player as Sy "Bugs" Hayman.
I'm not in a position to resolve the conflict. |
