World Tournament - Flyweight - Gold Medal Round
Gold Medal Round:
Jimmy Wilde 5-0-0 (4), Wales vs Miguel Canto 8-0-1 (4), Mexico - This was expected to be a classic boxer vs slugger match-up with the odds makers having it a "pick-em" match. Round 1: Wilde came out fast, scoring well but Canto's movement became a problem the later parts of the round and Canto landed several shots then slipped away throughout. 1-0 Canto. Round 2: Canto's movement continued to be problematic for Wilde as he used the entire ring while peppering Wilde throughout. The momentum Canto created in the latter part of round 1 carried over as it was pretty much all Canto throughout the round. 2-0 Canto. Round 3: Wilde finally landed a few bombs early in the round to take the lead then Canto fired back with tenacity as this fight had fans of both men cheering loudly I had Wilde edging the round. 2-1 Canto. Round 4: Canto didn't do much other than move, while Wilde landed a series of hooks and uppercuts that had him reeling towards the end of the round. 2-2 even. Round 5: Canto came out fired up, scoring well then sliding away, but again Wilde closed strongly in another good action round. 3-2 Canto by the slimmest of margins. Round 6: Canto was a phantom this round, using his jab and an occasional cross to perfection then moving away, keeping Wilde off balance the entire round. 4-2 Canto. Round 7: Not much action in this round, though Canto did flurry nicely at the start of the round only to have Wilde close the gap with a few glancing blows as Canto moved away. 5-2 Canto. Round 8: Wilde was able to finally trap Canto along the ropes and landed several bombs that sent Canto back to the ropes. Canto slid out only to have Wilde tag him again blasting him back into the ropes as the bell rang. 5-3 Canto. Round 9: A back and forth round that saw a flurry from Canto at the end of the round to steal it 6-3 Canto. Round 10: Canto scored with a nice combo early, but after that Wilde closed the gap and took the round with his work rate. 6-4 Canto. Round 11: Canto again started fast with some quick combo's but about 30 seconds into the round Wilde landed a hook that clearly stunned Canto. Wilde seized the opportunity and pounded away, causing major swelling around the left eye of Canto as he totally dominated the round 6-5 Canto. Round 12: Canto was in running mode, but Wilde finally cornered him with great footwork of his own and they furiously traded punches the rest of the round with Wilde clearly landing the harder shots! 6-6 even. Round 13: Canto worked very smoothly from the outside, while it appeared that Wilde was trying to catch his breath after the work he put in the previous round. 7-6 Canto. Round 14: The left eye of Canto really ballooned early in this round, causing Canto not to see several right hands from the hard charging Wilde, who by now had thrown caution to the wind, clearly trying for the KO shot. 7-7 even. Round 15: With both men fading, not much early, but Wilde found enough steam left in his engine to score several heavy shots to close out the fight strong. 8-7 Wilde. The fight went the distance, the judges scores came in. With a fight this close, anything was possible, though most felt that Wilde pulled it out in the latter half of the fight. The judges scored it 8-7 for Wilde, 8-7 for Canto and 9-6 for the Gold Medalist from Wales, Jimmy Wilde! Canto fought well in the tourney, earning the respect of all in his Silver Medal performance. While Lee had been hopeful of a Wilde-Perez showdown for the Gold Medal, he was very pumped up by the come from behind win by Wilde! |

World Tournament - Jr. Bantamweight - Preview
Jr. Bantamweight - Preview:
We have 23 fighters in this division left. To set the field at 16 I will have 7 fight-in bouts. The top 4 seeds are Khaosai Galaxy of Thailand, Sung Kil Moon of South Korea, Jiro Watanabe from Japan and Sugar Baby Rojas from Columbia. This division is not one of the deeper divisions, and I feel that the tourney is Galaxy's to win or lose. |

World Tournament - Jr. Bantamweight - Fight-Ins
Fight-Ins:
Jose Navarro 2-0-0 (0), United States vs James Wanene 0-0-0 (0), Kenya - Most of the bout was rather dull, but Navarro dropped Wanene in the 8th then scored the KO shot in the 13th round. He was up 11-1, 10-2 and 9-3 through the 12th. Alexander Munoz 2-0-0 (2), Venezuela vs Ferid Ben Jeddou 0-0-0 (0), Tunisia - Munoz dropped Ben Jeddou in the 2nd round, but Ben Jeddou came back strong and actually dominated most of the fight, despite being a huge underdog. With both eyes swelling in the 15th, Munoz tried for the desperation KO, and whild scoring well, it wasn't enough as Ben Jeddou took the 8-7, 7-7 and 8-7 majority decision to make it to the round of 16. Martin Castillo 4-0-0 (4), Mexico vs Edgar Omar Monserrat 1-0-0 (1), Panama - Not much defense in this one as they whaled away on one another for 15 rounds. Monserrat scred the lone knockdown in the 12th and closed strong to take the upset 10-5, 10-4 and 10-5. Cyril Bellanger 0-0-0 (0), France vs Luigi Castiglione 0-0-0 (0), Italy - This started as a good scrap, but Castiglione was cut in the 3rd on the bridge of the nose, and Bellanger spent the rest of the bout targeting it as it widened to the point in the 7th round to end Castiglione's shot at the Gold. Ellyas Pical 1-0-0 (1), Indonesia vs Peter Culshaw 1-0-0 (1), England - Culshaw started fast, opening a cut over the right eye in the 3rd round. Pical stormed back with a sense of urgency, scoring 5 knockdowns enroute to the 13th round KO win. Mbwana Matumla 0-0-0 (0), Tanzania vs Marat Mazimbaev 0-0-0 (0), Kazakhstan - Mazimbaev was the agressor early, but Matumbla came back strong in the latter half of the bout to close the gap. I had Matumla winning the bout, but the judges gave it to Mazimbaev 8-7, 6-9 and 10-5 by split decision. Masibulele Makepula 2-0-0 (2), South Africa vs Dimitri Kirilov 0-0-0 (0), Russia - A good action bout that went back and forth for the first 10 rounds then Kirilov landed the difference maker in the 11th with an over hand right. He then dominated the rest of the bout to earn the 9-5, 6-9 and 8-6 split decision. |

World Tournament - Jr. Bantamweight - Round 1
Round 1:
Khaosai Galaxy 3-0-0 (3), Thailand vs Ferid Ben Jeddou 1-0-0 (0), Tunisia - This started out fast and furious with Ben Jeddou suprisingly in it for the first 2 rounds, but Galaxy's power started to show from then on as he scored knockdowns in the 5th, 7th, two in the 8th and 3 in the fatal 9th as the final one was for the KO. Sung Kil Moon 3-0-0 (2), South Korea vs Edgar Omar Monserrat 2-0-0 (1), Panama - Monserrat moved well and countered well early, but walked into a sizzling uppercut late in the 4th for the Moon KO. Jiro Watanabe 3-0-0 (3), Japan vs Marat Mazimbaev 1-0-0 (0), Kazakhstan - Watanabe was cruising, building up a huge lead when Mazimbaev shocked everyone in the 7th with a pair of knockdowns, the final one being for the 10 count after the bell rang! The #3 seed falls on the grandest stage of them all! Sugar Baby Rojas 2-0-0 (2), Colombia vs Dimitri Kirilov 1-0-0 (0), Russia - Rojas scored 2 knockdowns, but Kirilov kept coming back in what was a thrilling action packed 15 round bout, despite major swelling around the left eye. I had Kirilov actually winning 8-7 on my card while the judges had it 9-6 Rojas, 8-7 Kirilov and 7-7 even for the draw, so we'll do this fan favorite again! Gustavo Ballas 2-0-0 (1), Argentina vs Ellyas Pical 2-0-0 (2), Indonesia - A tactical bout that had little action early, Pical built a lead, but I had Ballas finishing strong to pull out the 7-6 decision in the final round. The judges had it 7-6 Ballas, 7-6 Pical and 7-6 for the winner by the narrowest of margins, Ballas. Luis Alberto Perez 0-0-0 (0), Nicaragua vs Cyril Bellanger 1-0-0 (1), France - A real donnybrook that was non-stop action for the entire fight, Bellanger went down in the 3rd, but came back strong to drop Perez in the 9th. With Bellanger bloodied in the 10th and his right eye near shut, Perez dropped Bellanger 2 more times, the final one for the count in the 11th round. The crowd gave both men wild applause at the end of this one. Malcolm Tunacao 3-0-0 (2), Philippines vs Jose Navarro 3-0-0 (1), United States - A classic slugfest that went back and forth, with Tunacao dropping Navarro in the 9th only to have Navarro score 2 knockdowns in the 11th. They continued to whale away on one another then Navarro sealed the deal on my card with two more knockdowns in the final frame as this went the distance. The judges had it 8-6, 9-5 and 8-4 for Navarro! Masanori Tokuyama 0-0-0 (0), North Korea vs Jose Ruiz 0-0-0 (0), Puerto Rico - A close tactical bout that had spates of terrific action saw Tokuyama cut in the 9th. The cut widened each round until the referee halted the bout in the 12th for the TKO by Ruiz. Rematch: Sugar Baby Rojas 2-0-1 (2), Columbia vs Kimitri Kirilov 1-0-1 (0), Russia - An even closer fight if possible, neither man was down, though Kirilov sported a mouse under the left eye as well as a cut over the same orb. Again going the distance, I had it dead even 7-7 through 15. Strangely enough the judges had it 8-7, 7-6 and 8-6 for the underdog Kirilov as the #4 seed falls in this tourney. |

World Tournament - Jr. Bantamweight - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Khaosai Galaxy 4-0-0 (4), Thailand vs Marat Mazimbaev 2-0-0 (1), Kazakhstan - Galaxy had no problems with Mazimbaev, scoring knockdowns in the 1st round, 4th round and the KO half way through the 5th round. Sung Kil Moon 4-0-0 (3), South Korea vs Dimitri Kirilov 2-0-1 (0), Russia - Moon was in complete control, opening a gash over the right eye of Kirilov and reopening it again in the 5th. It was Moon's power however that ended the fight as he battered Kirilov until senseless before the referee halted it to save him further harm. Despite the lack of a knockdown, it was the correct call. Gustavo Ballas 3-0-0 (1), Argentina vs Jose Navarro 4-0-0 (1), United States - A terrific action bout that went back and forth, Navarro opened an early lead then they traded the rest of the way, with Navarro landing a sweet combination in the 14th to plant the favorite Ballas on the canvas. It went the distance with the judges scoring it 7-6, 7-6 and 8-5 for the winner Navarro! Navarro wasn't expected to contend for a medal, now he's in the Semi-Finals with the guarantee of at least a bronze as he faces Galaxy next. Luis Alberto Perez 1-0-0 (1), Nicaragua vs Jose Ruiz 1-0-0 (1), Puerto Rico - After splitting two competitive rounds Perez lowered the boom, scoring a pair of knockdowns, the final one for the KO with 15 seconds left in the 3rd. |

World Tournament - Jr. Bantamweight - Semi-Finals
Semi-Finals:
Khaosai Galaxy 5-0-0 (5), Thailand vs Jose Navarro 5-0-0 (1), United States - A fast and furious fight, though Galaxy got the better of it most of the way. Neither man down, but Navarro had swelling by the 3rd around the left eye & a cut on the forehead by the 6th. Navarro fought back gamely, taking a few rounds but by the 10th round with his left eye essentially shut and blood streaming badly out of the cut on the forehead, the ring doctor ordered the fight halted for the Galaxy TKO. Galaxy was up 6-3, 5-4 and 7-2 through the 9th round. Navarro can proudly say he did well, earning the suprising Bronze. Sung Kil Moon 5-0-0 (4), South Korea vs Luis Alberto Perez 2-0-0 (2), Nicaragua - After a furious 1st round Perez landed a huge uppercut in the 2nd that dropped Moon. Moon came back strong to take the 3rd with several bombs of his own. Perez then dropped Moon again in the 4th at the end of what had been a dull round. The 5th had the crowd on their feet in what seemed pretty even, then Moon dominated the 6th with a series of shots. The next few rounds were action packed with both men teeing off, but it seemed Perez got the better of it, with Perez causing swelling around the left eye of Moon & opening a cut on the right cheek in the 10th. By the 12th it seemed pretty clear that Perez had a big enough lead that Moon started to come out for the KO, leaving him open and Perez dropped him for the 3rd time in the 13th round. Another Perez knockdown in the 14th sealed a decision, but Moon came out again trying for the KO in the 15th, while Perez moved very well and punished a tired Moon every time he got close. It went to the cards with the judges having it 9-4, 9-4 and 10-3 for the upset winner Perez! |

World Tournament - Jr. Bantamweight - Gold Medal Bout
Gold Medal Bout:
Khaosai Galaxy 6-0-0 (6), Thailand vs Luis Alberto Perez 3-0-0 (2), Nicaragua - Round 1: Perez came out on his toes, peppering the stalking Galaxy then moving away throughout the round. He used lead hooks and quick combinations to score at will while Galaxy never laid a glove on him the entire round. 1-0 Perez. Round 2: Galaxy solved the movement of Perez, and tagged him with a series of hard shots throughout. Perez landed a wicked uppercut late in the round, but Galaxy took this one. 1-1 even. Round 3: Galaxy was again in control, moving in behind his jab then landing short shots to the body. This time Galaxy used a bob and weave style that made Perez do the missing. Galaxy was penalized late in the round for a low blow that wasn't close to being low. 1-1 even. Round 4: Galaxy was a buzz-saw, working the body well then going upstairs to score at will. Towards the end of the round he landed a hard jab that caused alarming swelling around the left eye of Perez. Perez countered well at times, but not enough to take the round 2-1 Galaxy. Round 5: Galaxy stormed out and targeted the swelling left eye, causing it to grow. Perez landed a few light jabs, then Galaxy tore a gash on the right eyelid of Perez. After the ring doctor took a look at it, Perez landed a huge straight right that drove Galaxy into the ropes as the bell rang. 3-1 Galaxy. Round 6: The corner of Perez did a good job with the cut between rounds, but the swelling around the left eye didn't abate. Galaxy came out fast again really taking it to Perez. Perez fought back valiantly, opening a cut on the outside of the right eye of Galaxy, but it was again a Galaxy round. 4-1 Galaxy. Round 7: Galaxy was on fire in this round, landing hooks, uppercuts, jabs and straight rights with impunity. He rocked Perez early and often, closing the left eye to the point that he couldn't see the right hands coming. Galaxy drove Perez into the ropes and piled it on until the referee stepped in and pulled Galaxy off of him for the Galaxy TKO. Perez wins the Silver while Galaxy wins the Gold, the 3rd medal so far for tiny Thailand. Galaxy finishes with a 7-0-0 (7) record as he tore through the field with relative ease. |

World Tournament - Bantamweight - Fight-Ins - Part 1
Fight-Ins - Part 1:
Akeem Anifowoshe 1-0-0 (1), Nigeria vs Rashid Ally 0-0-0 (0), Tanzania - Anifowoshe opened strong in the first round, but Ally rallied to take the next two. In the 4th however Anifowoshe landed a series of hard shots that had Ally defenseless towards the end of the round. Though he never left his feet, the referee halted the bout for the Anifowoshe TKO. Ritchie Tanner 0-0-0 (0), Guyana vs Ben Bitiai 0-0-0 (0), Solomon Islands - Tanner did just enough to win nearly every round, but didn't impress anyone. The 14th round was the end as Tanner widened a gash opened in the 11th on the right eyebrow of Bitiai to end it for the TKO win. Wladimir Sidorenko 0-0-0 (0), Ukraine vs Motee Singh 0-0-0 (0), India - A dull, lifeless affair saw Singh dead even through 10 only to have Sidorenko control the pace the rest of the way for the 10-5, 9-6 and 9-6 decision. Johnny Owen 2-0-0 (2), Wales vs Ndabe Dube 1-0-0 (0), Zimbabwe - After a feeling out round, Dube shocked everyone with a thunderous uppercut that floored Owen for the count at the start of the 2nd round! Ernesto Miranda 2-0-0 (0), Argentina vs Felix Friedemann 0-0-0 (0), Germany - Miranda scored 3 knockdowns in a comprehensive drubbing of the over matched Friedemann 14-1 on all three cards. Risto Luukkonen 2-0-0 (1), Finland vs Domingo Guillen 0-0-0 (0), Dominican Republic - Other than two close fast paced rounds, this was a game of hide and seek as both men stayed away from one another. Luukkonen did just enough to pull out the 10-5, 11-4 and 10-5 decision. Jorge Lujan 2-0-0 (1), Panama vs Gaetano Annaloro 0-0-0 (0), Tunisia - This was a technical bout from the start, with Lujan doing enough to win the vast majority of the rounds to earn the 12-2, 12-3 and 12-2 decision. |

World Tournament - Bantamweight - Fight-Ins - Part 2
Fight-Ins - Part 2:
Alphonse Halimi 3-0-1 (3), France vs Abdelkader Esmain 0-0-0 (0), Morocco - Halimi thoroughly dominated in this one, keeping Esmain at bay with crisp punches and slick movement to win the 12-2, 11-4 and 10-4 decision. Freddie Gilroy 1-0-0 (0), Northern Ireland vs Mike Iringu 1-0-1 (0), Kenya - Gilroy bloodied Iringu in the 2nd and scored a knockdown in the 14th round as he controlled the bout from the opening round to earn the 13-2, 12-3 and 14-1 decision. Sasha Bakhtin 0-0-0 (0), Russia vs Ernest Koffi 0-0-0 (0), Ivory Coast - Koffi threw more than twice the punches as Bakhtin, but only landed 9.3% of them as Bakhtin's defense was impeccable. Bakhtin outlanded Koffi 2.5-1 for the bout despite the latter's work rate to earn the 11-4, 9-6 and 9-6 decision. Bernardo Pinango 2-0-0 (1), Venezuela vs Moises Castro 2-0-0 (1), Nicaragua - An exciting fight that saw the favored Pinago down in the 2nd, 5th and 8th rounds. Castro was obviously out on his feet with 7 seconds left in the 9th when the referee halted the bout for his safety and the come from behind TKO by Pinago! Tancy Lee 2-0-0 (2), Scotland vs Feliciano Dario Azuaga Ledezma 0-0-0 (0), Paraguay - Azuaga Ledezma really took it to the favored Lee, scoring well in the 1st round then landing a wicked cross for a knockdown. Lee got up and seemed to be weathering the storm when Lee's corner inexplicably tossed in the towel, ending the fight well before it should have. for the Azuaga Ledezma TKO. Johnny Ertle 0-0-0 (0), Austria vs Johnny Caldwell 1-0-0 (1), Ireland - Caldwell overcame a bad gash on the right eye in this donnybrook that went back and forth throughout to bloody Ertle in the 14th and nearly close his right eye before pounding him so badly later in the round that the referee had to halt the bout for the Caldwell TKO. Caldwell was up 7-5, 7-5 and 6-4 through the 14th. Alex Baba 2-0-0 (2), Ghana vs Joe Cornelis 1-0-0 (0), Belgium - Baba did a good job of handling the slick movement of Cornelis most of the bout before Cornelis dropped him for a 7 count in the 11th. Baba came back strong, dominating the final 3 rounds to earn the closer than expected 6-5, 7-6 and 9-4 unanimous decision. Cardenio Ulloa 1-0-0 (0), Chile vs Joe Tei Ken 2-0-0 (1), South Korea - Back and forth throughout, this was more of a brawl than expected as Tei Ken fought back furiously, eschewing his usual movement to take it to Ulloa. Neither man down, Tei Ken sporting a shiner on the left eye, it went the distance with Tei Ken pulling out the well earned 7-6, 8-6 and 9-5 decision. |

World Tournament - Bantamweight - Round 1 - Part 1
Round 1 - Part 1:
Eder Jofre 1-0-0 (1), Brazil vs Ndabe Dube 2-0-0 (1), Zimbabwe - Jofre was his usual brilliant self, sticking and moving and scoring at will to wear down Dube. He then scored knockdowns in the 8th, 9th and 10th before the referee halted the bout for the 10th round TKO. Carlos Zarate 5-0-0 (4), Mexico vs Feliciano Dario Azuaga Ledezma 1-0-0 (1), Paraguay - Zarate dropped Azuaga Ledezma in the 1st and 6th rounds enroute to a 6th round TKO. Agustin Senin 2-0-0 (1), Spain vs Johnny Caldwell 2-0-0 (2), Ireland - Senin was in a brawl with Caldwell who scored well throughout, though Senin dominated, scoring a knockdown in the 10th then finishing the job with devastating combinations before the referee halted the bout in the 11th. Terry McGovern 6-0-1 (5), United States vs Joe Tei Ken 3-0-0 (1), South Korea - This was all McGovern all the time as he scored a knockdown in the 8th, 2 in the 9th then the final one early in the 10th for the devastating KO. Fighting Harada 4-0-0 (2), Japan vs Alex Baba 3-0-0 (2), Ghana - This was action packed, with Harada surviving a 4th round knockdown by Baba to take the late lead only to be disqualified for his 6th foul, a blatant low blow in the 14th, sending Baba to the 2nd round. This was the first big upset of the round, and Harada was up 7-4, 6-4 and 6-4 through the 13th round. Sixto Escobar 1-0-0 (1), Puerto Rico vs Bernardo Pinango 3-0-0 (2), Venezuela - Escobar set the tone early, with a 1st round knockdown, then survived a scare when he went down to a Pinango right hand in the 6th. Escobar dropped Pinango again in the 13th enroute to the 10-5, 11-4 and 9-6 decision. Pete Sanstol 0-0-0 (0), Norway vs Sasha Bakhtin 1-0-0 (0), Russia - For the most part this was a tactical bout, but Bakhtin scored a huge knockdown to swing momentum in the 8th round and finished strong to eek out the 8-7 decision on my card. The judges had it 8-7 Sanstol, 8-7 Bakhtin and a very odd 10-4 card for the winner by split decision Sanstol. Miguel Lora 3-0-0 (2), Columbia vs Freddie Gilroy 2-0-0 (0), Northern Ireland - Lora built up the early lead behind slick movement and terrific spurts of offense in what was an action packed early round. Gilroy kept stalking, scoring well as Lora wilted under the pressure in the late rounds before finally dropping Lora two times in the fatal 14th before the referee halted the bout for the upset by Gilroy. Lora was up 7-5 on one card while Gilroy was up 7-6 and 7-4 on the other two through the 13th. |
