Well, here's hoping the Bees can come out with a roar and maintain it the whole season. I don't know if I can do much more then I did last year, 103 BB's vs 12 K's. I'm hoping to boost my BA and my SB's so here's hoping Scottie Allen can come in and give us a dominant #3. Our offense is solid enough as is our pitching but we're just missing those one or two key players that would push us over the edge.

But if you mean retired players, it wouldn't be a bad idea, since when the HOF opened in 1939, only living HOF'ers were there... There's a picture of them in the HOF and on their website, and I considered using it and renaming the players who I thought they should be in TWB.... |

Re: Re: Request to become a GM
Any opinions on whether I should GM a team or stay strictly neutral? In the other league I commish, I don't GM a team so I always appear impartial. But I'm in several leagues where the commish also GM's and it seems ok too.
Carlton's taking a team & I'm waiting on another response or two. Then I'll list what teams are still open. Also, I'll sim April soon & get it up. |

I think it depends on what you want out of the league. If you want to continue doing something like you're doing now, with stories and history and so on for the entire league, I think it's going to be less work on you if you don't GM a team. But you've been doing that so long, you might want to GM a team instead and let everyone do stories and history and so on.
But regardless of what you choose, I don't worry a bit about impartiality. You've put so much work and time and effort into this league that as far as I'm concerned, you can do whatever you want. I can't imagine you'd wreck the league you've built by cheating as a dual commish/GM. Inconceivable!

Neutral is probably best so there isn't a Bud Selig feel to it. ![]() Also, there may be a tough call to make by the Commissioner like this past year when the wavier function wasn't working. There's a small, small, small chance that some shennanigans may go on, and you'll need to step in. Plus, there may be somethings that you realize you need to adjust as the game goes along (such as the finances, park effects, offense levels, or what not) and it looks better to have you Commish it rather than have any disgruntled owners lob bombs in your direction. Matt, it wouldn't bother me if you GM a team. The other leagues I'm in have the Commish as Gm and due to the quality of the guys there have been no problems. The way some people do it is to also have GM's as NL and AL league Presidents so that there are other decision makers if the Commish's team ends up in some dispute.
Seriously, with all you've put into this, it's yours to do as you please. Letting us play along is a bonus. |

I would actually prefer that you GM a team. Maybe you could make it a challenge by choosing the least successful remaining franchise.

Oh-oh... we may have uncovered more evidence of Black Sox tanking going back even further than Eddie "The Fixer" Whelan's performance in the 1917 World Series. We may have all forgotten the great race in 1915 between the Sox and Cleveland. The two teams finished in a dead heat a top the AL table with 90-65 records after the great one Andrew Murphy twirled a three hit shutout to beat the A's 3-0 while the Indians blew a 3-1 lead with allowing seven runs in the bottom of the 8th to the Red Sox. With the standings deadlocked, the teams met on Monday September 27 in Cleveland for a one game playoff to determine who would face the Cards in the Series.
The Indians busted open a 0-0 pitching duel with 5 *unearned* behind errors by... First baseman Josh Hitchins (two), catcher Greg Weekveldt and third baseman Kelly Bracky. Yes, three of the Black Sox Eight. The Sox would lose the game 7-3, or won 3-2 if one excludes runs allowed in by the Black Sox Eight. ![]() John |

Re: Request to become a GM
We've added 3 more GM's. I'm still going back-and-forth on whether or not I'll GM. If I get the 3 more we need to fill up, I'll be perfectly happy not to run a team. If we end up 1 short, I may take that team, even if only in the interim.
Team BOS - metsgeek CHA - jdw CLE - DET - m0ng00se NYA - haggis007 PHA - BPS SLA - WSH - BSN - Vris BKN - Ankhiel CHN - lgkeeper CIN - scprideandms NYG - tward13 PHI - Carlton PIT - ifspuds STL - TexasLonghorns Just 3 teams left: Indians, Browns and Phillies. Anyone who wants in, just PM or email me & rank these 3 teams in order of preference. Also be sure to give me your email address & first/last name. FYI: As I promised, an update is coming in an hour or two. I had it 1/2 written but lost it & had to start over. Last edited by Matt from TN; 06-20-2004 at 09:45 AM. |

April 1937
The Yankees started the season well by winning 7 of their first 9 games, but then they lost 2-of-3 games in 4 of their next 5 series. That allowed the rest of the league to stay close. The AL has been very evenly matched so far, and even last place Detroit is only 5 games out. The Cubs exploded out of the gate, winning 10 of their first 12 games. The Bees pulled into first by winning 9 of 10 games in the middle of the month, but the Cubs moved back into the lead by finishing the month strong. The Reds and Dodgers have played well and are making the early race interesting. Unfortunately for Chicago, they lost first baseman Howard "Cookie" Parrish for the entire season with a torn hamstring. He contributed a .325 average, 28 homers and 115 RBI to their pennant-winning drive last season. Taking his place has been 23-year-old Dan Troge, who has been a more than capable starter and is currently 2nd in the NL batting race. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Mitchell Haynam (BOS)! He had a record of 4-2 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.71 and 1 shutouts. American League-Batter of the Month: John Storback (DET)! He batted .386 in 101 AB, with 5 homers and 19 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Max Baxter (BKN)! He had a record of 5-1 in 6 games started, with an ERA of 2.21 and 1 shutouts. National League-Batter of the Month: Oscar Vancini (BKN)! He batted .337 in 95 AB, with 13 homers and 29 RBI. Code:

He has been relegated to a backup infielder with Eric Teeuw jumpstarting his career at age 32 last season, veteran Kid Fite at 2B and stalwart shortstop Ricardo Bowden at SS. Elmer "The Jeweler" Menard, SS, Pirates - Elmer hit .222 with 9 RBI in 11 games, but missed 2 weeks after being hit in the side of his face by a pitch. Carlos "The Colonel" Hulse, 1B, Tigers - Hulse continues to be buried at 1B behind Quenton Misisca, and the team did little to assure him of a future starting role when they signed an outstanding 1B prospect this spring in Denny Caneer. Gordon "Scotty" McCarthy, 1B, White Sox - Scotty hit .263 with 9 RBI and 10 runs scored. He is now back in the starting role at 1B. John "Lucky" Ryan, 2B, Indians - Lucky was traded to Cleveland on the last day of the month in return for an outfield prospect. It may work out for the best since Ryan is just 19 and the rest of the Indians infield is over 30, except for 29-year-old SS David Boyle. Ryan can learn some tricks from veterans like "Duckie" Andrew and Stanley Dancer while biding his time for a starting job, which he should almost certainly get since the Indians' only other infield prospect with any potential is a third baseman in Single-A. Genarito "Junior" Nunez, LF, Senators - Nunez hit .425 in 18 games at AA and was promoted to AAA in just his 2nd pro season. He is so far hitting .333 there. Artie Albrecht, CF, Reds - Artie began the season at AA where he is hitting .258. "Jungle Jim" Dunkel, 3B, Senators - Jim began the season at AA where he is hitting .337 with a .445 OBP and .891 OPS. Bonnard "Lil' Beaver" Shadle, 2B, Bees - Bonnard hit .400 with 5 homeruns, 19 RBI and 26 runs scored in his first month at Single-A. A promotion should be coming soon. |
