Baseball Timeline: 1974

Here are some of the key events of real-life baseball circa 1974. These events were taken from The Baseball Timeline.

*Lee McPhail is the new American League president, replacing Joe Cronin who retires after 15 years.

*Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald's, buys the San Diego Padres.

*Minnesota pitcher Dick Woodson becomes the first player to settle a salary dispute through the new binding arbitration process.

*The Mets' Tom Seaver signs a new contract for $172,500 to become the highest paid player in the game.

*Hank Aaron breaks Babe Ruth's career home run record by swatting No. 715 off Al Downing of Los Angeles on April 8.

*The Dodgers' Ron Cey drives in seven runs in a 10-0 rout of the Cubs on June 1 at Wrigley Field.

*Charles O. Finley, owner of the Oakland A's, signs record-holding sprinter Herb Washington as a "designated runner." Washington will appear in 92 games without batting; he steals 29 bases and scores 29 runs. He also gets picked off in the World Series by the Dodgers' Mike Marshall.

*A TV biography of Roy Campanella, "It's Good to Be Alive", stars Paul Winfield and Ruby Dee.

*Lou Brock gets his 700th stolen base on June 29. Brock steals a then-record 118 bases for the '74 season.

*Cardinal ace Bob Gibson records his 3,000th career strikeout.

*Angels' fireballer Nolan Ryan strikes out 19 Red Sox to tie the major league record on August 12.

*St. Louis defeats the New York Mets 4-3 in a 25-inning game that began the night before on Sept. 12.

*Nolan Ryan notches his third career no-hitter in a 4-0 Angels' win over the Twins on Sept. 28.

*Frank Robinson becomes the first African-American manager when he is named to that post with the Cleveland Indians.

*Four of the five games in the 1974 World Series end in 3-2 scores as Oakland defeats Los Angeles.

*Hank Aaron and Japanese home run king Sadaharu Oh begin a home run contest in Tokyo after the regular season.

*While Aaron is in Japan, the Braves trade him to the Milwaukee Brewers at his own request.

JIM '74 Preview: American League East

The following is the first in a four-part series previewing the 1974 Joy in Mudville season. It, in no way, attempts to predict the season outcome.

Baltimore Orioles
This team is beginning to resemble the Buffalo Bills and Atlanta Braves of the real-life '90s. The Orioles have torn through the division and AL playoffs the past two years only to find heartbreak in the World Series. Instead of Scott Norwood's missed field goal attempt, it's been Bill Slayback giving up a home run and Darrell Evans throwing away a ground ball.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox offense continues to revolve around the strong performances of Carl Yastrzemski and Reggie Smith. Third baseman Ron Cey also seems to be blossoming. However, management wonders what's happened to the bat of promising catcher Carlton Fisk. Starting pitching and short stop remain the two biggest question marks.
Cleveland Indians
The Sons of Geronimo feature a lineup stacked with young talent in the forms of Mike Schmidt, Jeff Burroughs, Dave Parker and Robin Yount. Pitching remains the Tribe's Achilles Heel. After showing signs of progress in '72, former first-round pick J.R. Richard took steps backward last season.
Detroit Tigers
The Motor City Kitties are counting on at least one more solid season from veteran first baseman Norm Cash. The Tigers are high on last year's No. 1 pick Fred Lynn. AL home run champ and Rookie of the Year Dave Kingman returns along with a trio of left-handed starters led by former first-round pick Randy Jones.
Milwaukee Brewers
Southpaw starters Mike Caldwell and Doug Rau give the Brew Crew hope for the future. Up-and-comers such as Dave Winfield and Buddy Bell also boslter the dreams of Milwaukee fans.
New York Yankees
The Bronx Bombers won 108 games last season yet again finished runner-up to Baltimore. Right-hander Mel Stottlemyre has 77 victories over the past three seasons, including an AL-record 30 a year ago. Despite a slow start to last season, catcher Thurman Munson is a budding All-Star.

JIM '74 Preview: American League West

The following is the second in a four-part series previewing the 1974 Joy in Mudville season. It, in no way, attempts to predict the season outcome.

California Angels
Veterans Clyde Wright and Rudy May must produce big seasons for the Angels to contend. All-Star second baseman Jorge Orta may be the best hitter no one knows about. Center fielder Mickey Rivers could develop into a solid leadoff man. While first baseman Jim Spencer is the team's best power threat, the Angels may swing a deal for more hitting.
Chicago White Sox
The Pale Hose will go as far as the three-lefty combination of starters Tommy John, Jerry Reuss and Wilbur Wood takes them. Rookie right-hander John "The Count" Montefusco is expected to replace inconsistent Jerry Janeski as the fourth starter. More offense is needed to take the heat of third baseman Bill Melton.
Kansas City Royals
Veterans Dick Allen, Lou Piniella and Pat Kelly must mix with youngsters such as Frank White for KC to contend. Injury-riddled Paul Splittorff has been nowhere near his Cy Young performance of three years ago.
Minnesota Twins
The Twins remain the division's biggest enigma. Minnesota features strong pitching with the likes of Bert Blyleven, Jim Kaat and new closer Terry Forster. The offense possesses Tony Oliva, Rod Carew and the promising Richie Zisk. Yet, the Twins have never finished better than third, a fact that continues to puzzle their management and fans.
Oakland A's
It seems every season the A's get off to a slow start and then play like gangbusters to catch up. Injuries haven't helped. Last season, team captain Sal Bando played in just 53 games due to a groin injury. This season, Reggie Jackson will start the year on the DL. Yet, experts aren't writing off the A's just yet--it's too early in the season to do that says history.
Texas Rangers
The division champions for the past two years, the Rangers have yet to win a playoff game. Still, there are high hopes in Texas. Batting champion Chris Chambliss returns to a lineup that includes Toby Harrah, Don Baylor, Graig Nettles and Darrell Porter. A strong pitching rotation headed by Burt Hooton and Luis Tiant doesn't hurt either.

JIM '74 Preview: National League East

The following is the third in a four-part series previewing the 1974 Joy in Mudville season. It, in no way, attempts to predict the season outcome.

Chicago Cubs
In four league seasons, the Cubs have averaged 76 wins and been an also-ran. Veterans Ferguson Jenkins and Dave McNally aren't getting any younger. Rookie Derrel Thomas replaces the retired Don Buford at second and as leadoff man. Rick Monday appears to be ready to take the torch from aging Billy Williams as the team's top hitter.
Montreal Expos
After showing promise with a 78-win season back in 1971, Le Expos have fallen on hard times. Starter Rick Reuschel must return to top form and veteran Ron Fairly needs help on offense. Montreal does have some promising youngsters in its minor league system. It may be time to put the veterans out to pasture and bring up the kids.
New York Mets
The Mets appeared ready to make a run at the East flag early last summer. However, the team soon stumbled its way into a fifth-place finish. Insiders are excited by rookie starter Ed Figueroa. Three-time Gold Glove short stop Bud Harrelson returns.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phils improved by 16 games and finished four games in back of JIM champion Pittsburgh a year ago. Philadelphia appears on the verge of moving to the head of the class with a quality starting rotation and boppers Greg Luzinski, Lee May and Oscar Gamble.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Lefties of the world unite. The left-handed dominated lineup led the Bucs to their first JIM title last season. Batting champion and league MVP Al Oliver returns along with stars Richie Hebner and Willie Stargell. Dock Ellis and Bob Moose, the last two pitchers to win the NL Cy Young Award, anchor the staff.
St. Louis Cardinals
While a late-season trade a year ago has revamped the Redbirds, it's still veterans Joe Torre, Ted Simmons and Lou Brock that make St. Louis go. Left-hander Steve Carlton may be on the cusp of becoming the NL's top lefty. An upgrade at short might be all that's standing in the Cardinals' way.
