2002 - Korea beating Spain and Italy. Those two games have to be up amongst the most controversial ever. (and thinking about it I didn't even put them in my infamous World Cup games list )

I wish they would have played the last 75 minutes of the game with the same intensity that they played the first 15 minutes. I think the size and speed of the French defense wore down their confidence and strength. All that was left was the course of a scoundrel: Cheating.

It seems like (through my limited experience) that they do a good job of policing the diving and the acting in the EPL compared to the Serie A or La Liga. Why is that?

I know I am alone here but I LOVE watching South Korea. I love their crowd and their passion. I hate their cheating though. The cheating by the Korean boxing team in the 1988 Seoul Olympics is legendary. South Korea won those games though on legitimite goals. Im not sure that those games really belong on your list so please except a pass for their omission.

I think in local leagues the players dont want to get on a refs bad side by diving when he will have to see the same ref again and again. Also the refs know the players and their tricks. So there appears to be a consistancy that develops over time. Inconsistant refing is a real problem at a WC.

Probably because it's not quite as widespread here as on the continent... yet.
There are plenty of divers here - Pires and Diouf to name but two.

Give it time, and it will be as rife in the Premier League.

I didn't say the South Korean goals weren't legitimate.
It was more to do with the decisions against the two opponents that caused them to be controversial IMO.

But you're right - they shouldn't be on the list, as I couldn't even remember them when I compiled it.

I see Italy winning on penalties after a scoreless professional 120 minutes.

Why are you sorry? With some of my comments, I bet you think I'm like that ****y kid on the street you'd love to take down a peg or two.

Seriously though, we have as many English divers nowadays, and whether it is because of the continental players/managers or not, it's getting more and more endemic. Hope you're right though (like with RMY yesterday), I just don't see it though.

EDIT - the kid I'm describing begins with a 'c'. What is going on, there's nothing wrong with it!

If I tried to take you down a peg or two it might well be me that gets the wrong end of a verbal thrashing.

After reading posts from many UKers on the footiemanager boards there couldnt be a less kocky guy than you. Or much more knowledgeable. England players are usually too honest and straghtforward to dive and act like a dyck. Well see though as the first England exhibition matches are this weekend, no?

They're beginning to though. Owen did a dive to win the penalty against Argentina in 2002, Joe Cole flopped a couple of times against Portugal (?), and does for Chelsea as well, and Gerrard dived to get a penalty in one of the pre-tournament friendlies I seem to remember.

And I think pre-season friendlies do start this weekend, yes.

Do you have any plans to do an England franchise in football like your Euro baseball league? Id love to see how things go. Also, it would be an education for Americans like me who didnt grow up with the game??

Further to the earlier discussion on final rankings, I've just noticed on the Wikipedia page for this World Cup this has appeared:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_FI...l_Team_Ranking

And it says:
Quote:
All 32 teams are ranked on the following criteria:

1. Stage reached. Teams in blue reached the semifinals, orange were eliminated in the quarterfinals, green in the round of 16, and gray were eliminated in group play.
2. Points earned. 3 for a win, including in extra time; 1 for a draw, including a game that was decided in penalties; 0 for a loss, including in extra time. A * in the draw column indicates a draw lost on penalties, while a + indicates a draw won on penalties.
3. Goal difference. Includes knockout play.
4. Goals scored. Includes knockout play.
I'd love to know where whoever added this found this info out, as as far as I know FIFA have never released that.
